View Full Version : Why mother, why? (Hair disaster pics from the past)

After posting in the 'photos of when you were a kid' thread, I thought it might be fun to share those pictures you wish hadn't happened, or rather, those pictures of haircuts you wish hadn't happened! (I did do a search but I hope I'm not starting a thread that's already been done before).

The pictures aren't so much cute as cringy, these haircuts are often the work of a mother on her last nerve, a clueless dad, a scissor happy hairdresser, that mean kid in the playground, a sugar crazed sibling, glue/gum/etc or even yourself with your years of wisdom (my little sister who now has beautiful tbl hair once cut off her entire fringe, thinking that was the way to get rid of it, instead of growing it out )

So come on, have no shame, don't let me be the only one sharing such a bad picture ;) I have a few regrettable pictures but this one, well, thanks mum...

I'm guessing the fringe was supposed to be straight?

(Sorry for the poor picture quality.)

Ouch. It's a good thing little kids don't mind so much when you butcher their hair. :)

The worst thing my mother did to my hair was having no clue how to treat curly hair, so I went through a childhood of poofy, triangle hair (at shoulder length, so it really was a triangle).

I'm glad to say I actually don't remember this ''hairdon't'', I think I've blocked out the memories  Sadly I do remember the great 'classic to chin' chop she enforced... oh the pain.

Haha, the only curly I grew up with as a kid had the fortune of having a long haired hairdresser as her mother, so she grew up with waist/hip length ringlets, lucky duck. I saw a lot of triangle hair in my early teens though and I had a friend who type 4 hair, she insisted on lightening it a lot and straightening daily... ouch. Shame, I saw her hair natural a few times and even with the bleach damage it was lovely :)

OK I feel your pain. Here is a picture of my hair that had big thick bangs and hair that was hard to control. I am the kid in the front with the cookie. Hehe it's fun looking at old pictures.

This next picture is of my cousins in 1991. I think the best is the hairdo of my sister (which is the tall girl in the back). Man did we have some crazy hair.

Oh dear I don't have photos but my dad gave us bowl cut fringes (me and my little brother) when I was about ~10. My hair was a lot wavier then because I didn't pin it while it was drying so the times he cut it too short I'd have weird, messy, tentacle-like pieces of wavy hair sticking out of my hairline. They didn't even behave like a fringe it just looked like they were trying to escape from my head :/ lol
The times he cut it the right length weren't much better because then I'd have a thick section of unruly wavy hair hanging in my face. (it was unruly because my family and me brushed through it harshly and I'd tug at it for no reason so there was a ton of breaking and unnecessary poofiness)
Then he got a crush on the hairdresser and started taking us there all the time :p
I got my hair cut so often that it never grew but through my teens I damaged it so much with rough handling any long hair I would've had wouldnt've been very nice.

The dreaded bowl cut. My mom ALWAYS got my hair cut like this, and when my sister got older she suffered the same fate. I guess mom thought it was cute. People often mistook me for a boy!

I did too, so so far, YES! lol

ps: I looooooove that wallpaper!

my regrettable hairdon't has no remaining photographic evidence (8th grade school pic), I know this, because I systematically have destroyed every copy given to every relative

I was shoulder-length plus some and had used a curling iron to "feather" my hair....on one side...the other side I slicked back, skin-tight, in a barrette )I have no idea why!! lol) and in the photo, it made me look like that side of my head was shaved...and flat

If you look at my photo in when I was a kid photo, you can see how short my bangs are. Mom always cut them wayyy short. She always put that VO5 in it too. I hated the smell of it. Still do. Every time my hair would get to shoulders she would cut it.

Here is one of me and my too sort bangs again in 3rd grade. On left. One on right is one of my granddaughter, Macayla, who looks very much like me at that same age. My hair was that blond when I was younger. Her hair is WL now in 4th grade

You were all absolutely adorable as children. I'm a frustrated grandmother (none yet- I keep telling my daughters, 'Take your time- but hurry up, will ya?") and I love kids to pieces and these pictures just make me want to hug the stuffing out of the children you used to be!!:D

I think you win.

Not only did I (like Cowgirl16) think this was a photo of you and your brother ... but you look exactly like my brother did at that age (identical hair cut AND colour!). Funnily enough, at the time everyone used to think he was a girl...

This is definitely the best so far!

I once cut all my bangs off with desk scissors because I didn't like that my mom was making me practice my handwriting in the summer. Sadly, I have no pictures of it. I do have some great photos of me with a brushed out perm in the mid 1980s. The only thing that would have made it better would be if I also had mall bangs... Sadly, I was never cool enough for that.

My mom once hid behind the couch and cut off her WL pigtails because she was mad cause grandma would always give her brothers quarters to go to barber shop for haircuts and she didn't get to go.

Ohhh these are great! I don't have any pics, but I was very curly as a child and when I got my hair cut into a bob, I was a triangle head for quite a long time. Neither me or any of my foster parents knew how to take care of curls. I still don't, honestly, but with my length my curls are weighed down into nice manageable waves.

I don't have any good pictures, but for Halloween when I was 12, I dyed my hair a temporary black. I was kinda into the goth thing at that age anyways, so Halloween was just an excuse to do it. My stepmom freaked out and forced me to sit in the bathroom while she did two box bleach kits in a row on my hair, and then cut off 5 inches once she saw the damage. I'm surprised my real mom didn't catch fire with how angry she was. I started with BSL dark blonde hair, went black, and after that ordeal, came out with APL reddish-brown hair full of damage, as well as my part down the middle being completely fried off into a bald line. Once that hair began to grow back out, I took green hair gel and made a tiny green mohawk to go with my ugly burnt hair just to piss off my stepmom some more. Man she was a train wreck.

Lol, my 4th or 5th grade school picture looks very similar, crooked bangs and all. My dad used to cut our hair when we were little, and somewhere I have a picture of me that looks like I had my bangs cut with a weed whacker. Parts are like 1/2" long, and other parts are more like 2". I don't know how he thought he was cutting evenly!

Oh man...these are fabulous! I'll have to see if I can find my middle-school pics. Mainly I'm looking for pics of the perm I HAD. TO. HAVE. or else I would SIMPLY. DIE. All my terrible hair pics were entirely my own fault, nothing to do with my poor Mom (who tried to talk me out of the perm).

Okay, I found a pic of myself...8th grade. Post-Perm. Ah, the year 1989...

Remember - this is what I wanted to look like. My Mom tried to convince me not to perm, but I would not listen. I got to spend ALL of my 9th grade year growing the damn thing out. At least I learned from the experience.

Once I was finally rid of this lovely "do" I decided the grunge movement was RAD and desired to emulate Kurt Cobain (but still be a girl). To this day I'm not sure what I was thinking at times (or IF I was thinking at all).

Yes, I remember the Toni Perms. I think that I had one when I was 12 or so. It was horrible, so frizzie! And thinking back I don't think that I really needed to have one because my hair is kind of wavy, curly.
I remember washing my hair & setting it in pin curls & because my hair was about shoulder length I think, it took forever to dry.

When my mom cut my waist length hair to shoulder length and used too much shampoo and not enough conditioner. Hellooooo split ends. Fortunately, she has gotten a lot better. (Years of practice  ) I now only trust her to cut my hair. I ask her to trim my split ends and she never cuts more than necessary. At most, 1/2 an inch.

I had a mullet when I was 9. Up until then I had pretty waist length golden blonde hair that I wouldn't let my mom anywhere near with a brush. My hair has always been fine as spider webs and as a child I had terrible snarls. My mom tried to brush my hair starting at the top and ripping a huge paddle brush through. Hours of that and me screaming that it hurt so she took me to have it all cut into a bowl cut. I HATED it and refused to let anyone touch it so for a long couple of years I had a mullet as it grew out.

I have a photo of me in disney world standing next to this little fake village thing. I've got a shaggy mullet and I
Im wearing a purple sweater with weird multicolored unmatching neon buttons with patches all over it. I looked like a homeless child.

Oh my god this thread is gold!

I think my worst cut was by a stylist trying to remove cement paint from my hair, so really she did the best she could with what she had. But honorable mention goes to my Dad who thought it would be 'fun' to get my my tail bone length hair cut into a bob one weekend (I couldn't have been more than six at the time). Unfortunately all my pictures are packed away or I would share!

Oh, I'll have to look through my old pictures. My mom usually did a pretty good job, mostly because she only did blunt hemlines and straight bangs, and sent me to the hairdresser if I wanted something more complex.

But there was one time when I was five that she took me to the hairdresser to get a pixie cut, and explained to her what style she wanted. I don't think the hairdresser understood, because I ended up looking like a little boy, and one with a bad haircut! I refused to get another short cut for years after that.

When I was 6 I was in love with my second cousin and decided to get a haircut just like him (buzzcut). And my mum let me! So school could have gotten a better start to say the least :) In my first year school pictures I'm wearing a terrible sailor style dress with a blue ribbon and a mullet to go with it! Gah!
