View Full Version : October 2013: Segmented Ponytail

We're back for this month's style! Ready?

Segmented Ponytails

These have gone by different names by different people, whether they're banded ponytails, caterpillars, what have you. If you're unsure of what it entails, it's a ponytail with hair ties tied at even intervals down the length of the tail, creating a nice sectioned effect.

Happy styling!

Just messing with this with my trusty Topsy Tail the other day and couldn't quite get it to where it looked presentable outside the washroom. Will have to go back in and give it a more serious go!

I meant to take a photo this morning when everything was still fresh and rumple free, but work got in the way. So here is my end of day hair. The sections between elastics had a little puff of volume so it looked a little more updated since I remember wearing this look tight and smooth in the 90s. This morning every elastic had hair wrapped around it (even on the pony length) and everything was smooth. Now, not so much. Rubbing against my shoulder really ruined that part. I'll try again another day this month.

PS. Ugh. I hate my profile. I know I have a double chin - I don't need to see it! :bigtongue:

This is my first time participating in Hairstyle of the Month. The hair that's coming out of the segmented ponytail is just natural layering.

I copied Gingerclip. *shame* That puffy style is so pretty. It reminds me of Princess Jasmine, lol.

Here is mine right after I did it, but I'm not so sure how long the puffs are going to last.

Greetings from a newbie to the forums!

I found the hair style of the month topics and fell in love. When I was younger I saw people doing this hair style, but didn't have the ability at the time to do it myself. I am quite proud of my efforts today doing this style. It is a great alternative for people who cannot do a french braid themselves. It has a very similar effect. Fun!

I used two small elastics at top and at bottom and two regular size elastics in the middle. Does anyone have trouble with the last one falling out? I have fine hair and I can definitely see this happening in the near future

OOOOoo, yes!! You totally should do it when you do the style again (and take pictures of course!)

ETA: This style left some interesting waves!

Here we go! :) Did this today... think I'll do some more updo segmented pony styles.. if I do I'll take more pictures. I know it's not exactly in the middle of my head it's off to the left.

Here is mine. Nothing exciting. Look at those thin hairs at temple. They don't seem to grow longer and has always been thin there like its recedinghttp://i1257.photobucket.com/albums/ii517/Kwantslonghair/e3bf71d320a4379557e921dcc587e7d9.jpg

I guess I didn't poof my sections out. Guess mine is a worm and not a catapillar

You can't see it in picture but I added one of my cheap plastic headbands for a little pouf at the back and keep my layers behaving. First time doing this style but it's cute and I love it.

It can sounds weird but I do a similar hairstyle to sleep (with less hairbands). I have straight hair and braids leaves me odd waves in my hair.
I probably won't upload a picture because I fell ridiculous. I wish I was cute like that girl :p

Oooooo, thanks for this link. I wear pigtails like this more often than not. Either loose or braided. This style is cute! I think it would look great with bands in the same color as your hair as well.

This is so cute!

Hypersensitive - I think I'll try that on my daughter (she's 2.5, with hair about bsl) tomorrow. If her hair cooperates, and she does as well!

Neko_kawaii - As you can see, I haven't hit the 25 comments yet, so can't access your blog sadly. I've never done a wrap around a ponytail. How do you do that, and secure it so that it doesn't fall out?

And to anyone - how do you do the multiple divisions before the nape of your neck? Do you just put it up like a half ponytail, leaving less and less down each time? Sorry if it seems like a silly question, the only hairstyles I can really do are plain ponytails, braids (dutch on myself, french on my toddler and they look terrible until I leave the head), and a bun (again, which looks terrible). Thank you!

I used two bobby pins to create a mini topsy tool. I took a stretched out bobby pin, stretching it more and bending it around a hair stick slightly to give it a large "U" shape. I put the bent pin behind the hair band, took a small section of hair and wrapped it over the band, then with another pin, threaded the tail end of the section used to wrap with through my tool and pulled the tool through to pull the hair under itself. Of course, if you have a small topsy tool you won't need to mess around with unbent pins.

I pinned it up in a coronet braid rather than having it hang down, so it probably stood up to a days activities fairly well. Not sure how it would last if left down.

Also, folks might be interested in this video tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz0wQSYwrdQ&feature=youtu.be)one of which (1:30) is a segmented ponytail that is topsied at each segment. Maybe I'll try that tomorrow!

Since I CAN do this hairstyle, I'll post a picture of it! Haha
I love this hairstyle, easy way to show off my length but still keep my hair nice and contained so it doesn't knot. I wear it every now and again. :P
http://i118.photobucket.com/albums/o105/Emmy-Lou-94/IMAG1027_zps790ca411.jpg Unfortunately I have too many layers to do this hairstyle at the moment without getting silly fluffy bits towards the bottom third.

Thanks! The last time I did this hairstyle one section was noticeable larger than the rest and it bothered me all day once I noticed it! I would have re-done the entire thing if I had noticed while I was doing it. It took me awhile to get the puffy sections just right too. After all the bands were in place, I lightly pulled on each section going up the ponytail then did the same going back down it as well. I believe I did this twice (up and down).

I couldn't get the segments straight for the life of me though, and my ends refused to stay together in one curl! They split off into two, giving it an almost fishy look! Haha!

Awesome! Yet another hairstyle I used to do a lot some years ago when my hair was super long. It was different than a bun, and tidier than a ponytail. If done right it doesn't look to "young" hehe...

Any ideas for how to handle the sides and front, which are too short to pull back? I LOVE the little poofs people are turning the segments into. Is anyone willing to let me in on the secret for doing that?

After you put all the bands in your hair, you tug gently on each section to pull the hair out a little. Some people are better at it than I am, but that's the basic principle.

This was my favorite style as a kid! I would wear it starting with a half up then sections here added to that pony all the way down, but the length of the pony wouldn't be banded. I do like the full ponytail banded - it reminds me of Princess Jasmine!
