Just wanted to share some pics to help inspire my fellow longhairs... found this one of me taken in August 2010, was using hair straighteners then and stopped right about that time:
Just above shoulder length hair

Since that photo was taken, i stopped straightening my hair and just grew it all natural, no dye or anything, until it got to mid-back level. Then, 12 months ago i had Yuko straightening to make it permanent straight. I also had it dyed black, you can just about make out my dye line around the level of my cheeks. I don't want to chemical dye again and am going to have a go at henna/indigo.
October2013 picture (these pics taken after stretching my washes, i'm currently on day 5 no wash), 32 inches long

I am overweight so don't have much of a waist, but looking at these pics it looks like i could be a little past waist now?
I sooo much wish i wasn't so camera shy when my hair was shorter, i'd have loved more pics to compare with.
Anyway, hope this was an inspiration to others reading this who are aiming for waist lengths. It's certainly renewed my dedication, my goal is to reach classic length.
If anyone else has any 3 year piccies it'd be interesting to compare?!

You're hair is beautiful! Thank you so much for sharing. If I chopped my layers off now I'd have hair the length of yours in the first pic, so you've given me something to look forward to!

Oh wowie. I started growing my hair at about the same time. Back in June of 2011 is when I started making a more conscious effort to grow it. That is where I was in my growth; that exact cut. If I hadn't done all the trims (some way unnecessary ones) that's about where I'd be in my growth journey. Your hair really is an inspiration of how you can get somewhere if you just let your hair grow. I threw my scissors away in an attempt to discourage me from cutting my hair for a while (I've had them since the beginning of my growth journey they needed to be replaced I think anyway :p) Maybe get myself some new ones for Christmas and give myself a New Years trim. How often did you have your hair trimmed between those pictures if I may ask? It looks very minimal. Simply lovely. Thank you very much for sharing. Eventually I plan on doing an anniversary thread. Eventually. Hehe. :o

Absolutely fabulous Donnalouise! I am trying to get to APL. My goal is waist and I have many inches to go. You are beautiful and your hair is lovely! I tell folks "we all have six pack abs - mine are just insulated really well!"

I had to trim off around 0.5 to 1 inch from the bottom, a couple of months after i had the straightening treatment my ends looked fried, that would have been about 10 months ago now. Zero other trims apart from S&D, no microtrimming, no normal trimming, no trips to the hairdressers other than for the straightening, just laziness and neglect... that is over 2 years with no scissors anywhere near me. I only started doing S&D trims in the past 12 months when i noticed a few hairs looking bad but didn't want to have a trim, that's when i researched and found about S&D online and now i do it every so often. The splits do crop up more often nowadays and i have to be more proactive in S&D-ing.

You made a really good job, this is a great growth :)
And I think your hair could be at hip lenght now, not just waist!
Congrats!

That is fantastic! You must be thrilled. My hair is just on my shoulders now - growing out a pixie - and I cannot wait to get to bra-strap length. Gives me some kind of idea how long it might take.
Well done!

Yowza! Amazing growth and gorgeous hair. I am biased, but I think that the length really suits you!
Also -- super-healthy looking. You must have taken great care of it. It looks fab and you have a great hemline!

wow, that's awesome! I'm alternately scared that it took so long (OK, 3 years sounds like a long time, and makes me wonder if I can stick it out that long myself!!), and amazed that it grew so much in that time (because that's an amazing amount of growth no matter how you slice it!)

Wow what an inspiration! Your hair looks amazing! I'm growing out a pixie and it's almost to the length your hair was in the first picture, it's nice to see what kind of growth can happen in a couple of years!

Your hair looks wonderful. And I'd say that it's definitely past waist. It may even be at hip or close to it anyway.

The difference is amazing! I love how pictures can show such drastic differences. You had a LOT of growth. I have a question though, did you notice any damage from the straightening treatment? It's out of the question for my pixie/bob cut, but much later when I have more length, I might think about it.

I did get a little damage with the yuko, I had to cut off around 0.5 to 1 inch from the ends around two months after the treatment. Overall it gave the impression of my hair being MORE healthy though, smooth and silky. The yuko people always claim its not damaging, but don't believe them... All straightening is damaging and even my strong hair had fried ends that didn't show up for a couple of months. The main benefit is that you cut down on the amount of heat damage long term. .. One big straightening session vs hundreds of potential blowdry and straightener every time I wash.

*blushes* Thank you. That was with chemical dye back in 2008. One of the best photo shoots of my life with my sis. The one in my sig was with Jamila. I am now using Dulhan Deluxe henna to recreate a bit more of what I had with chemical dye, more red than copper, while helping to make my hair stronger during its fight to grow and perhaps sooth my scalp some. Major life changes have caused me to shed tremendously and it seems to be working so far. Just need to update my sig with the new colour. It's has multiple shades of dark red and my dark brown with some flashy darkish red in the light, think fairly dramatic shades of rosewood since I have some naturally aburny hair with some lighter brown and dark brown hairs. *big grin* And that is crazy how much hair you can grow if you just don't cut it. I know it's simple, but I'm impressed.

Great pictures, donnalouise! Impressive growth!
You look so happy in the second picture, what a great shot.
I wish I had some of your thickness! Your hair is very pretty and I agree that it suits you well.
Good for you on the growth!
Just ignore those around you who ask when you are going to get a cut. It IS possible to ignore that question. My fairytale ends have past knee, and my mother still asks when I am going to get it cut! LOL! imagine how many times during that growth span I have been asked that question by her! Pft! Countless. Just a ridiculous number of times.
And every so often, when someone asks how long you are going to let it grow, just respond "I am going for floor.". ;)
