I have clips they look like this : http://snoodlebugvintage.blogspot.co.uk/2010/10/30s-hair-mervin-waveomatics-and.html

The metal teeth are quite rough, wondered if this is damaging to the hair?

Im not sure but they could be due to the metal teeth and hinge parts. I know it's wrong but I'd love to do my hair in a set.

So THAT'S how they got that wave up there! Those things are terrifying though!

I think a lot of it might depend on how careful you are- I modeled for a friend whilst she was at college for costume design, and she yanked a goodly chunk of my hair out and broke a few more with one of those beasts. But I do think that was more down to her not taking enough care rather than being the clips fault!

There are other ways to get Marcel waves!!! I don't think I'd use those, especially since you have to sleep on them. I'm a restless sleeper, and I can only imagine those sawing away at the top section of my hair. Since you say the teeth are rough, I think I'd keep them around just as a bit of the past and to show what our fore-mothers had to suffer for beauty and style.
