I'm going to a victorian ball in the 20th and I have no idea what to do with my hair!

I'll be renting a costume, and I have to make a mask. But what about my hair?

Help me get ready!

I'd go for (very high) up, high and formal with some curly tendrils to soften it a bit. What's the dress like?

There are a lot of ideas here, you could do something similar, maybe not that complicated, but something like that....

Apparently these are "the latest and most fashionable European and American styles" from 1867, which is right in the middle of the Victorian era. It may not be a true representation of how the British wore their hair, but as far as I know fashions either side of the pond weren't too different, and it's almost certainly close enough for your needs (unless of course you're actually after the American fashions of that time, in which case it's exactly what you want). It's the best resource I've ever found for hairstyles of that period.

It's fairly easy to adapt the first one for long hair, removing the need for additional hair pieces. There's a picture of my attempt at it floating around here somewhere. I expect that the same will be true for the other hairstyles, but I haven't tried them because I'm lazy and it would require planning to do heat free curls. The third one looks nice, and I suspect straw curls would do an acceptable job of those really tight, thin curls.

I'm not sure yet, I'm going to the rental place today or tomorrow to take a look at my options. I'm hoping to find something black . If I can't find something I'm thinking of ordering a bustle skirt (I have a red full bust corset I can wear).

I'm thinking of doing loose braids and wrapping them like the style in this picture (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QR9JFtgrL18/T-8PSqKZ5EI/AAAAAAAABiU/8JncX5xx8wk/s640/victorian-hairstyles-2.jpg) it seems like it's easy enough and will look decent with a mask.

I'm so exited :bounce: there are dancing instructors. I've been begging DH to take me dancing for now 5 years, and finally he takes me to a ball! Yay!

So there is a leather mask making class being taught at DH's work, and I soooo want to go! But these are the sample masks, I'm hoping I can get someone from the class to tell me how to do it. Sadly about 15 people signed up for the class and I might not be able to make it (priority for DH's costumers of course, employees might not be able to be included). So I'm sending my super awesome stepson to the class, to observe and tell me how to mold them! Apparently it's really easy.

These are the available patterns, which one do you guys like?

Update on the dress: I found gorgeous one in the civic theater my size that are black. I won't know until I rent it which one is available, but they are gorgeous. They are slightly too big for me, and next year I will prepare my own dress! I'm so exited!

I like the black cat and the fox the best!

I like the horned owl best, but then again I'm an owl fan. I just saw this video tutorial (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwkq6yIsJWQ) for a mask made with eyeliner which made me want to go to a masquerade, but I don't have any to go to. Boo!

I also think that the hair should be something high or then you could wear a hat to bring some height to the whole thing. You do have enough hair to make something spectacular! I like the curl or braid ideas. And remember, there are hair doughnuts, hair rats, bumpits and such to give some extra volume. :)

Ooh how exciting! I see something half-up with tons of curls, like Winona Ryder's hair in Bram Stoker's Dracula? I couldn't find any good pictures of it...

That's what DH and I are going for!!! I couldn't find a dress like hers, but we wanted to go as Dacula and Elisabeta! I want to wear fangs and all . I'm going to have skirt made nad buy a special corset for next year if they host one again. It's the second year they do that, I hope they continue!

Hair wise I'm thinking of doing something edwardian actually, I think that it's close enough historically and the hair looks way easier to reproduce without heat.

I'm thinking of making lace bat masks for DH and I too. These leather masks are HOT, I don't know if I'll be able to stand being masked the whole night so I'm thinking of doing something that breathes a lot more.

Omg that red ball gown is seriously a work of art. I want to go back and watch the movie again just to drool over the costuming, lol!

That's probably a good call on the masks, I'm sure it will be hot with the crowd and the dancing, and you want to be comfortable. Have you checked out Rapunzel's Resource for hair ideas, she has a ton of period and semi-period styles.

Oh wow, this thread has totally gotten me excited for Victorian stuff this winter!

So I went to the local theatre and rented a costume.

It came down to these two:

https://scontent-b-pao.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/1380784_10200953521945917_238932470_n.jpg

I ended up choosing the one on the right (as in DH chose it ). What I was worried about really did happen, whatever fit my waist (26 inches) didn't fit my boobs, and whatever fit my boobs was too big for my waist. My measurements are just weird, one gorgeous copper gown was just baggy on the torso area (for someone way taller than me).

Sadly I fell in love with a GORGEOUS blood red gown that just didn't zip up on my back, it was literally half an inch too tight on my boobs. It would have been amazing :(, 3 other girls tried to zip me and nothing. THe dress on the left was a bit too tight on my chest and DH just didn't like it.

Anyways, next year I'll have something custom made to fit me .

Ok so I put my hair up, and the mask I had got stuck to my pins so I went to the bathroom and took it off  so my hair was down.

Anyways a picture!

The picture of only the dress is the one that won, she sew it herself and finished it 2 hours before coming in! AMAZING!
