I have a soccer game, and buns don't work for me, they fall out. Ponytail whip around and hit me in the eyes, braided ponytails are even worse, and braids also hit me in the face and come out.

Hope this link works. Its a Circular French Braide. im sure its supposed to be a fancy updo, but no reason why it shouldnt be solid, especially if you leave a solid rim all the way around your skull instead of just the front like she (Lilith Moon on you tube) does...

High braided ponytail, then clip it to your hair lower on your head with long bobby pins or clips like these:

Does your league allow anything hard in the hair? The league I played in didn't even allow bobby pins or plastic clips, which affects what styles I can recommend.

It also depends on how long your hair is. (ETA: Whoops, just saw that it's in your signature.)

I used to do a sock bun for gymnastics, because it would squish enough when I rolled on it to not be uncomfortable, and I would secure the braid with hair pins and a scrunchie, so it would be pretty solid. This is a sock bun where you braid the excess and wrap it around, not a fully rolled one.
I also tried the Amish braid one for one meet, and it worked okay, but was somewhat complicated.

If I were still doing gymnastics now, I feel like I'd have even more options, even though my hair is a bit longer. I know so many more updos I could try. Like a braided vortex bun. So solid!
If my hair was shorter, I think I'd for-sure try the crown braid.

Ponytails hurt so much!!! Looking for a qay to run without getting a scalp pain.. any other suggestions?

I like to do a braid or french braid and then tie tight knots in it until I run out of hair. Then tie it off with a very thick hair elastic or some sort of band. It stays in very well and the hair is all up and out of the way.

French and dutch braids work, as long they're not too long. Twin braids in particular are comfortable as all get out, and if you don't like the "pigtail" look you can french/dutch twin braid down the scalp and combine the two braids into one at your nape.

Knots?! :shudder: Am I reading that correctly? That does not sound like something I would ever consider.

I usually do a French/Dutch braid and fold it up into a bun that I can secure with a claw clip, hair sticks, hair fork, or some U pins.

I would do 2-3 french braids, secure them with elastics, and then secure all three together with another elastic, if you can't use clips or pins. If you can, though, you could just pin the ends back to your head or wrap them into little braid-buns. That's what I used to do for playing sports.

I find Amish braided bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PYjubahR6g), simplified Ellingwoman braided bun (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4_biroGTJ7A), woven crown braid (https://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2009/10/23/luana-braids-woven-crown-variation/) and horseshoe braid (https://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2009/10/21/luana-braids-renaissance-variation/) variations the most secure and comfortable for sports. Yes, they take some (basic, English) braiding and a bit of time, but they hold well.

I love Amish braids (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PYjubahR6g) for that kind of thing. They take a while to put in, but are rock-solid secure with one little elastic and sit close to the head. (My fitness class involves a lot of moving around, and braids/ponytails flop in my face during pushups, wad under my head during bench pressing, get pinched under the barbells during back squats; and get on my LAST nerve!)

Knots?! : Am I reading that correctly? That does not sound like something I would ever consider. Yes, knotting the braid I mean. Grabbing the braid, put one part over another and pull through, tying a knot, starting at the top of the braid and doing the same until you're all the way down. Or even on top of each other. Let me see if I can find a pic where I'm wearing my hair like that, it might explain it better than words do... Here is one. (I hope it's okay to post a pic here? If not, please let me know and I'll remove it.)

Oh, that makes much more sense now. Thanks for the picture. Make a braid and then make knots with the braid.

And it's usually fine to post pictures anywhere on the forum as long as you attribute them appropriately. If it's yours or a meme you can use the image tags. If it's not, but you like it just use the link tags. Am I making sense?

How about a braided bun? That way you don't have the braid hanging loose and flopping around. Plus they are super secure.

I play a professional sport, and I used to wear a braided ponytail, but since my hair has gotten longer, it slapped me in the eyes. Now I wear a bun secured with a thick scrunch. I do ponytail before I bun, but I don't think it causes damage. If I'm just working out at the gym I'll wear a French braid.

Yeah anything braided paired with a big srunchie should and is probably the most safe and comfortable for doing any high activity..... I cant think of havin pins in my hair with all that vigor.

For me I do to dutch braids and knot them in the back securing them with a soft silk black srunchie. This work and stays very sturdy already in slipery hairbut If it is going to be extra intense or for a long time... a skull cap made of bandana keeps everything in its place. A headwrap with some light material may be a lot more feminine and pretty but seeing some girls with style and looks more than ok.

Really when I do sports the last thing I want to think of is my hair.

Just want to restart this topic. I do high intensity stuff and buns keep falling apart.. Do you think spin pins will prevent this or just make matters worse? what is the best way to keep it solid and protected.

I don't know what you define as high intensity, but spin pins have held up to a full day in a room of ten toddlers, a twelve hour shift that involved giving CPR, and currently surviving our DIY basement finishing project. If you run the risk of impacts to your head, I'd choose another method, since they are metal, but I've no issue with my hair escaping from them, and my hair's fine enough it's left tight French braids (the kind you a free face lift from)

Thank you for replying! :) Hmm.. sounds promising. may have impact on the head. running jumping rolling on the floor etc. Wont it be cushioned though?

Have you tried hair-taping 2 milkmaid braids to your scalp? It's comfy and very safe (nothing sharp or pointy): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqbAdvL8kME
Alternatively, Amish braided bun holds well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-PYjubahR6g

Neither do I. I have a childhood friend who loves to braid hair, but it was always very tight. Sadly we don't live next door anymore.

Thank you Meteor, Its a little too complex for me. I just use two ties on a normal bun. I think it has caused more split ends. is this possible?

^ How do you use those ties, elvenelk? I guess the damage is possible if you are rough on your hair (especially while removing those ties). If you can, use scrunchies insted or circlets cut from pantyhose/tights, because they are lot gentler on hair.

Also, how about these 2 options for protective styling?
Frieda Kahlo braids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dxltmgagKeg (milkmaid braids with scarf/ribbon added for security)

^ Sure, why not! :D That's double cinnabuns / beebutt-buns. If the ties aren't too rough and don't have those metal pieces (which can rip hair), I'd go for it.

Oh, she absolutely is! :agree: I got a bit scared when I saw her doing martial arts with a long ponytail - not necessarily the most protective style but it looked great! :applause
