View Full Version : What do YOU think should be stickied, put in a sub-forum, or an announcement

There have been a few calls for a sticky with links to important threads. Sounds like a good move, but it'd be better if some of our other members add their voices!

Post the names of threads and links to them that you think would be particularly useful for a newbie stumbling in to this forum and trying to figure out what everything is.

I'm inclined to say that it'd be best to leave most of the fun threads out -- they're great, but there are going to be so many informative threads already that it could get bogged down with the fun stuff. Besides, the fun threads tend to stay within the first few pages of the forum as it is.

Thanks!

ETA: This is largely directing to "Index to Important Threads and Resources (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/announcement.php?a=11)" announcement that appears at the top of all forums. Forum specific stickies can also be added.

I think most of the ___length to ___length threads should be stickied. Possibly the show us your ___ pics threads, too. Maybe have a sub-board in the Mane Forum for ongoing threads (the big, years-long ones), so that the entire first page of the Mane Forum isn't just stickies. It seems like a good way to introduce new users to the wild world of ongoing threads that LHC hosts, too.

It's going to be a single master thread/post. Instead of each individual thread being a sticky (oh the clutter!), if we all determine it should be included, will be a link in an organized list. Much easier to look into and navigate versus having, say, 10 threads suddenly stuck on one board.

October 4th, 2013, 11:18 AM
Oh, I'm thinking of just making a single post with links to the threads, not stickying each important thread separately. You're right, we'd probably have about a page of stickies then, and that'd be annoying.

Any method of organization is fine. I just think they need to be out of the way yet accessible. Good times.

I think it would be good to have a big master-post of "If you want your hair typed, post here". The first post should include a description of Fia's hairtyping system and how to correctly prep your hair for a hairtyping photograph (i.e., no manipulation when drying in particular).

It would have several benefits:
1) Newbies will learn about hairtyping early on and will learn how to do it properly
2) The boards won't fill up with hairtyping posts, as they sometimes do
3) Newbies (and older members) can refer back to all the hairtyping decisions made before, to help them learn what each hairtype looks like.

I really like the idea of creating subforums, and then putting 2-3 stickies at the top of each forum

- Growing - has all the "___ to ____" threads
- Washing - has the CO, WO, CWC threads
- Styles - has all the "Show me your bun/braid/ribbon" threads
- NEW? START HERE! - hair typing thread stickied
- Toys

But if you just want to create one post with list in it, then those topics would be my vote for being in the lsit.

Threads for people of different hair types (especially different levels of curl - 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s) - they're good for sharing tips. A thread for thick (iii+) and a thread for thin/fine (i) hair would be good too. I'm not sure how you'd select which existing thread to use in each case, though.

Cool, thanks. Keep the suggestions coming!

Links to these threads would be really useful, btw. Searching for the threads alone (especially with a 30s wait between searches) would take longer than if I can crowd-source it from you all. :D

It might also be useful to put a tip in the post about how you can subscribe to certain threads, which will basically keep them all "stickied" in that person's own Settings page. I know that's how I keep track of the ongoing threads that I care about, anyway.

Agreed on all ideas mentioned. When I first came here, I was most interested in:

- finding people with the same hair length as me
- finding those with the same type
- different washing methods
- different bunning and braiding methods.
- hair friendly tools (sticks, forks, combs, brushes, etc)
- heatless styling methods (which is what brought me here to begin with)

Maybe a reminder of the groups that we have here? Are those even up and running anymore? I have not visited since the shutdown a few months ago, but it was great to see groups specifically for my hair type and other things that pertained to my interests.

NONE! Stickies clutter forums in my opinion. With all the different topics around, I think that we'd soon be inundated with stickies, a problem on many forums I frequent. You only have to look at the amount of suggestions in this thread. I don't think stickies will solve the necro thread issue either.

I subscribe to threads I want to find later on, including many mentioned here. It's easy enough, no need for stickies.

So that's my suggestion.

I imagine they would also end up a few hundred pages long, which makes them unreadable almost. Or locked and stuck at the top, which is kind of annoying when you are done with the content in that thread.

I would just prefer it if important things like hair typing, length typing, ways of washing and things that everyone agrees on had their own place on the site. It would be good if it was really prominent and easy to get to, like on the top menu in between forum and blogs or something. And that all the old content in them was restored, so it didn't have to be dredged up from cached pages.

I definately think LHC terminology is a must. Abbreviations like APL, BSL etc. don't mean anything to newbies.
Side note: I've heard people say that hair type info is back under the avatars, but on my iPod touch I can't see it. If there is any way you guys could maybe fix that I would be very grateful! :)

I think having a few sections in the sticky with clear headings, like:
The Length Threads
Super shorties
APL-BSL
Classic to Knee
Knee +
etc.
The Hair Type Threads
Type 1c/2a
Type 1s
Type 2s
Wavy and Wurly
Wurly and Curly
Type 3s
Type 4s
etc.

And then a general "Important Info" type heading, that would contain links to stuff like Fia's hairtyping, SMT, LHC abbreviations, the KNIT policy, etc.

If I get some time later I'll try to go dig up those links for you, since you asked. :)

I think you should update the links that are already posted in stickied threads. For example, the Ursula's Standard Newbie Advice article is a good one. As you know, right now this article cannot be accessed (database error)but use the waybackmachine! Change the link to http://web.archive.org/web/20120307010120/http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/vbjournal.php?do=article&articleid=39

I feel like all those new members are missing out on information basic and important to this community like the LHC Terms and Abbreviations, The new VISUAL hairtyping guide and how to contribute with your typing picture, and Standard Hair Lengths Guide. These are posted in the "Announcement: Useful links - hair help" banner but I think they should be moved and stickied to the "New? Start here!" Thread since they will be the most practical and sought out for information for newbies.

Of course, I'm not saying you must put ALL of those links up. In my research, I found quite a few dead threads for hair types/hair colors that someone might want to revive in the future but the threads I linked are the ones I deemed most popular.

Links to these threads would be really useful, btw. Searching for the threads alone (especially with a 30s wait between searches) would take longer than if I can crowd-source it from you all. :D

I don't know if you know about this feature, but you can filter for the most viewed threads withing a main topic instead of individually looking for the particular thread. Go to your main topic page i.e. Mane Forum. Scroll all the way to the bottom. There is a box that says Forum Display Options. There, you can sort threads by Number of Replies, Number of Views and other options.

Or maybe we could have a "Reference" sub-board (like the Off-Topic area) where you can't start new threads without mod approval, and all of these threads are crosslinked or stickied from The Mane Forum (if that's possible). I don't think it would be a good idea to hive them off from The Mane Forum into an entirely separate area, and they would get a lot less traffic then.

Did that make any sense? I feel like it wasn't very clear.

Sme can be in Mane, some in Henna/natural, others in conventional, etc. so it would not even be five on the same page.

Love the idea of a single sticky full of links!

Could I humbly suggest that The (tentative) Bun and Braid Reference Thread (forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=112682) be added? Preferably in a 'Styling' subsection, and is there any way to link directly to post #23 in that thread? I couldn't figure out how to do it. That way they don't have to wade through our discussion to find the list that's still being updated periodically.

I like this idea, regardless of the little details of how it gets carried out. :)

Seems like there's two main categories of threads being mentioned here, threads that contain important information but are not necessarily active all the time, and threads that are super popular and always active. I'm not saying they need to be arranged that way, just making an observation. Along those lines, IMO I'd like to see the different cleansing/conditioning/recipe type threads there, like CO, NW, oil shampoo, SMT. Also the big 'show me your...' picture threads and standard newbie advice threads. A lot of the information that was laid out really nicely in the articles section is still available in forum threads, that kind of stuff.

P.S. In the vein of 'recommending personal favorites' :D I'd love to see some kind of hairtoy crafting specific type of sub forum with multiple threads on different types of crafting. The ficcare modification thread could go there, and the massive, single, hairtoy making thread could be multiple more specific threads (like 'making things with wood' 'making flexis' 'sticks with beaded toppers' 'working with metal' etc). A girl can dream... :)

ETA: Hahaha, and there was even a post further up this page about threads getting necro'd.

I can do that.

To link to a post, by the way, look for the post number in the upper right of the post. That's a link. :-)

I think we should organize information about products, combs and accessories again. We used to have a thing I could go to if I wanted to try a new product and I could see LHC reviews about it and contribute my own. That was way easier than searching through 15 threads the name came up in. It had organized pros and cons, ingredients, pictures, pricing... That would be my suggestion.

I would love to see the'' ficcare modifications /repairs and beautifications'' thread and also the'' ficcare data base'' thread added. They are both detailed reference/info threads, so I feel they are both really valuable and therefore should always be easy to find and I am tired of bumping them to make sure they both stay on the first page! They are not quite as active as the ''ficcare colour thread'' so need bumping fairly frequently.Love this idea of putting groups of threads under stickys.I liked the idea that was mentioned of separating info threads and super popular threads and having them here.If that were to happen, super popular threads like''show me your ficcare colour'' thread could be added also..Adding a specific ''reference section'' could be good..

Did you go down to the updated lists? (starts at post 23) If so, can you let me know which ones are broken so I can try to fix them? I've been wanting to work on a length-sorted list, but haven't had time recently. It'll be a little complicated to put together because of the way hair thickness plays into it as well; I'm still thinking of ways to get around that.

You're right there is no help page or sticky. If you've never been on a forum you're lost. No one is there to help you.

I believe that may be subjective based on the user, but if anyone has any questions they're always welcome to start a thread on Site Support or ask/PM a mod. We're definitely ready and eager to help out, so everyone is always welcome to contact us with questions! I personally haven't seen that question about subscriptions pop up much, but it's always possible something may have been missed. Finding subscribed threads hasn't been something I've personally added to the large common questions and how-tos thread, but that is due to my not seeing that topic as something very prevalent.

On the chance someone is reading this with curiosity on how to find their list of Subscribed Threads, below the primary navigation links at the top (Home, Forum, etc.) is a secondary row that contains "Quick Links" on the far right. There is a link to Subscribed Threads (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/subscription.php) if you click on Quick Links. :)

A secondary way to view traffic on subscribed threads, if not just links to the threads, is to visit your profile. Normally when a user visits their profile, the "My Activity" tab is the default active tab. On a row below that there are options to refine which activity is viewed, and by default it's set to "All",. Activity on subscribed threads is one of the options that can be toggled by clicking on "Subscriptions". This serves to show activity on both subscribed threads and subscribed blogs if you have any friends whose blogs you are subscribed to.

Most definitely true! :) For that, Site Support is a really great place to use as a help resource if a mod isn't available since there is a very good chance other forum members may be able to answer questions for things such as site navigation, user permissions, and many other topics. Before I became a mod, I liked checking Site Support to see if any other members had a question that I was able to help by answering. I still do, but usually another member has beat me to the answer. (Thank you all of you who are just as eager to provide all of that help! You're all incredibly amazing.)

For most things people ask on Site Support you'll find an absolute ton of totally helpful people here ready to jump in and help figure out problems people might be having. :agree:

I really like the idea of creating subforums, and then putting 2-3 stickies at the top of each forum

- Growing - has all the "___ to ____" threads
- Washing - has the CO, WO, CWC threads
- Styles - has all the "Show me your bun/braid/ribbon" threads
- NEW? START HERE! - hair typing thread stickied
- Toys

But if you just want to create one post with list in it, then those topics would be my vote for being in the list.

I like this approach too, I would add to the Growing subforum a sticky at the top with an explanation of what the milestone abbreviations mean, and a few reference pictures (including that one I see around here all the time with the skeleton shown) showing exactly where the milestones are, since hip and tailbone seem to cause so much confusion, wailing, and gnashing of teeth

I would also include a Troubleshooting subforum, with the sticky containing advice to chelate/clarify, do an SMT/deep condition (with a link to the SMT recipe thread) and airdry without product or leave in first, since so often that seems to solve the problem :p

For what it's worth, I don't really think anything should be stickied. I prefer to see things in order of when they were posted to last. I imagine they would also end up a few hundred pages long, which makes them unreadable almost. Or locked and stuck at the top, which is kind of annoying when you are done with the content in that thread.

Easiest way to do that is click on "new posts" on the white bar at the top of the forum. It's what I do. I rarely see the actual forum structure any more.

I think this sticky thing is more for reference/newbies. I admit when I first came here I was COMPLETELY lost, so many abbreviations, so many techniques talked about, no idea what was what or where and no easy way to find that information without trawling.

The way it's done at the moment, with a single stickied "Index to important threads" thread is the best way to do it IMO. A collection of useful links in a single, easy to find thread. All the goodness of a stickied thread, without the bloat of too many stickies. :)

Please consider adding trimming techniques.
Spidermom's trimming (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=121587&p=2682424#post2682424) method, and the compact cut (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=117777&highlight=compact) method.

I would have never cut own my hair before TLHC, and these two techniques have saved me a small fortune.

Hi! Still quite new here, but this thread seems closest to what I wanted to ask about. :)

Has it ever been considered to make sub-forums for the "mane" forum, just like off-topic forum has?
EDIT: I see now that is has been suggested!

My reasoning:
The index of important threads is separated nicely; some of it overlaps (e.g. something might be relevant to straight hair + short hair + wearing an updo), but generally speaking, I think several categories are specific enough (at least hair types like straight, curly etc.; growing from/to hair lengths; dyed hair; but that's just my impression!).
When I first got here, it was... overwhelming, to say the last, to find the list of 45,697 (!) threads. The search function is OK, but not for advanced filtering. I couldn't help but think, how easier it would be to search within a smaller sub-category.

So I was hoping this is something that could be considered.
EDIT: So I'm now wondering why the idea didn't pass before?

How would you define the sub-categories?

Someone who's been here longer can probably see the flaws in those or suggest better ones, but my ideas are along these lines:

• Anniversary posts (they don't happen often, they are quite specific and valuable)
• Growing (from X length to X length, reached milestones, goal lengths, ...)
or, more broad,
• Progress (anniversary + reached milestones + from X length to X length + cutting hair ...)

Or just like its in the sticky:

• Hair by type (Straight and Silky, Wavy and Wurly, Wurly and Curly, ...)
• Hair by length
• Hair by colour (natural, dyed)
• Washing

I'm thinking that even 1-2 extra sub-categories would make a big difference and be helpful. It would require moving some threads – if that is possible – but I bet people could help link them (at least I would).

Of these the only one I'd like would be the anniversary posts, to be honest with you! I'd worry moving the growth threads or the type threads to a subforum of their own would end up with less traffic to the Mane forum or to the subforum! And in general I don't think they really would need to be moved at all anyway, as they're sort of integral to the place. I mean, that's the mane purpose of the forum, is it not? To grow, and talk with people who are there or who have been there? And with the types, that's not so proliferous that it needs to be off in its own place (and that subforum would likely not see a whole ton of traffic).

But the anniversary threads? They're lovely, one of my favorite things, but not necessarily needed in the Mane forum. A place for them as a subforum would be really nice! You could even go through the whole Mane forum (or have us do it, and report the relevant threads) and move all the anniversary threads to their own subforum and you could just have this little pile of celebrations and history. Oh it'd be lovely!

I feel like, of all the threads in the Mane forum, the anniversary ones are the only ones that are sort of disconnected. They're connected in some ways, yes, but overall moving them to their own subforum wouldn't really be any sort of loss to the Mane forum at all, and would be IMO a bit of a gain (if we were to go through and move all of them).

Anniversaries
Hair Typing
Challenges (Don't Touch, Don't Trim, 1 Month Photo, etc)
Milestones (APL to BSL, BSL to Waist, etc)

What I'd like to hear from as may people as possible is why they think this would help them find threads, if it would make it harder, or if they are neutral.

I'm neutral. I don't use the forum/sub-forum structure to find threads, I use the What's New activity stream to scan current conversations and my Subscriptions to follow old ones.

Here it is: https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=54874

It's in the Index to Important Threads and Resources (https://forums.longhaircommunity.com/announcement.php?f=9&a=11) announcement, above the board.

neko_kawaii I think those look good. I think it will help newer ones find things a bit easier, and as 'decluttering' was mentioned a few times on the thread that blew up a while ago, would serve that purpose too :)

Edit: I too like the idea of an anniversaries sub-forum, and the Challenges idea is great - currently some are in the Projects and some in the Mane forum so it would be cool to have them all together.

Edit 2: slightly less sure on the Milestones one; the content of those threads is so varied that to me they feel an integral part of the Mane forum. However they are big threads so some might prefer that they are moved, with specific questions still being asked and not buried within the thread

I tend to have the main forum page pinned, and so I use it to see what's new.

Anniversaries - yes! I think it'd be an addition that's all around positive
Hair Typing - This one could actually be pretty good. "What's my hair type" is a common new thread, and it wouldn't hurt to have a place to direct people when asking. It could also be nice to just have a pool of older hair typing threads, so the shy or even the non-members could look and get an idea of their hair type without having to be able to post any photos. But I wouldn't necessarily lump in threads like "wurly and curly" to this, as they're also just for talking to people with a similar hair type, and not always for active hair typing.
Challenges (Don't Touch, Don't Trim, 1 Month Photo, etc) - I certainly wouldn't be against it! They tend to get lost in the general hustle and bustle of the Mane forum (can't tell you how many times I've had to just go and search for the 3 or 4 monthly photo thread or the waist by christmas thread). Could also help with less duplicate challenges, as they'd be easier to look through.
Milestones (APL to BSL, BSL to Waist, etc) - I've been thinking about this one a lot since my last post in here about it. I think that some of the negatives I'd brought up about it wouldn't actually be very big in the grand scheme, and may even be entirely outweighed by the positives. The positives being: They're all there to see in one place, and not getting hidden by other things. This would be good for the less active milestone threads, which tend to drop regularly to page 3 and in some cases (such as the waist to hip thread) all the way on page 7. And for this sub-forum there could be a sticky listing all of the milestone growth threads, for bigger ease of finding. (And on another hand entirely, a sticky like that could be useful on the Mane forum with no sub-forum introduced at all!)

At least a few threads that involve kinky/highly textured hair. I think it’s important for representation, and for new comers who seek solace with hair types such as mine (chemically altered or natural. Such as the Relaxed hair thread and Kinky 4s thread.

Reply with links to all of them and I'll get them added to the Announcement!

I think there needs to be a section for Henna.

There should be an announcement or stickied post reminding users that photos posted on the main forum are viewable on the public internet, and that even if you edit your post later, it will probably still be available on various archives. Bots can also scrape the site and download public photos. I've seen some young people posting some quite revealing photos, and I think it's important to think very carefully before making that sort of thing public for ever.

FrayedFire, there is already a subforum for Recipes, Henna, and Herbal Haircare, in which most of the discussion is about henna.

I agree with this, I don't think people should be posting basically bare photos here, it makes me quite uncomfortable and I worry about Internet safety for the people posting these photos.
I don't see why Length checks can't be done with tops on. I understand with bra strap it's harder but indicating where it is by say a stripy shirt etc works fine, This opinion is for everyone not just woman.

a permanent notification (like when we had the mass LHC hair goals one) might be a good idea.

I think it depends on the age of the person posting it. Children should of course not post pictures like that as they are not mature enough, but most of LHCs user base are adults, no? I probably belong to the group of younger people posting length checks without a top on, but being in my twenties I think I'm old enough to make that decision for myself. It's not "risky" pictures in that sense to post a length check where you can see some skin where it's not covered in hair.

Of course, I don't see every picture posted here so there might be cases where I'd agree, but general length checks from behind without a top on, I don't see the issue.

The point here isn't to embark on a discussion about how we each individually feel about posting these photos, but rather to create a helpful reminder for new users who may be unfamiliar with this particular forum software. Permission levels can be confusing (new users often ask why they can't see profiles or albums), and for people used to social networks such as Instagram (where photos are not indexed by Google or archived in general, so may eventually disappear from the internet if deleted), they may reasonably assume that there's nothing permanent about posting a public photo on the main forum. We can allow people to make their own choices while also educating our community and encouraging good privacy practices.

Maybe putting a title, just a title, on top of the subfora that are "public" would not be bad.

And this discussion... is public!

I have the "new posts" link bookmarked, and so sometimes unwittingly I almost answer in a public / mane forum thread in a thread about health for instance that a new poster has posted, with not enough permissions but needing to talk/vent about a particular issue. I have health concerns and it is terribly appealing to answer, but sometimes I need to practice restraint because it is... public! I would not mind a mod then stepping in and telling them it's too heavy a subject to discuss publicly. That's my issue with permissions / public fora. But it is rather personal, maybe?

I think we all need to be careful and practice that restraint ourselves. Still a "warning/title" would not be half bad.

Everyone has different lines on what they feel should be public for theirselves. It is no secret that parts of the board are public and parts are not, but do we really want a massive red flag right on the front page reminding those of unwanted intent about that or letting them know right away? At least now they have to read a bit instead of seeing it right away.

I would mind. I don't think mods are needed to step in just for heavy subjects! Not when it's just about personal levels of comfort, which vary between individuals. Of course there are certain topics that in too much detail would break the rules by being non-PG, in which case it would be appropriate for mods to intervene. But most subjects of a personal nature are just about individual comfort levels.

barnet_fair I agree that it should be about helping people easily make informed decisions. I don't know what the solution is or what's possible with the forum setup, but yes we do see people forget or simply don't understand the different areas of the forum and different levels of privacy.

In that case we would have to intervene no matter what section they were posted on however.

Super shorties seems more suited to people who want the pixie and not actively growing c:

I check out Super Shorties and it seemed primarily growth oriented in the B-C range so I merged it with B-C, titled it Buzz to Chin and made that the link in the Site Announcement.

I also tracked down the maintaining shorter lengths thread and added that to the Announcement.
