View Full Version : Is it bad that I don't want "long hair"?

Okay, to be honest, I registered with this site so I could join in with the wealth of information for haircare/styling/what have you. But I, in fact, do not want very long hair... in fact I can't imagine wanting longer than the bottom of my bra band? Will this deter my reputation on a site with most of its users wanting flowing long locks? I mean, even though I don't want hair that long, I still want to take care of it at BSL as much as a woman with knee length hair....?
Anyway, I'm enjoying this site thus far, but I wanted to get this out in the open first. It will probably come up sooner or later, and I don't want to get in trouble for joining when I don't want "long hair" (isn't that subjective? BSL will be very long for me!).

No one will throw you off the site!
I myself want waist length (but it will look like BSL on me because I'm so curly)
Warning though, many came on this site wanting 'normal' long hair--and end up with hair longer than they first thought they wanted!

Secret- we all came here wanting arm pit length hair. The invisible patterns in the background hypnotized us and we all became Cousin Itt.
(Snork, giggle...)
It's perfectly ok to have a goal length. With all the trial and error here, your BSL hair will be absolutely thud worthy.
Shine, health, shape, hemlines are other worthy places to obsess. And we are good at that here.

Hah, just kidding, of course you're welcome here! And for the record, I still think BSL is perfectly long hair.

Ha! I'm in the same boat with you WoolSweater but I didn't have the guts to proclaim it.
Growing up I had long hair (waist length or so) but my mom was always obsessive about it which I didn't enjoy past the age of 10. As a teenager I was so tired of her talking about my hair. In general, I was beyond bored with it and the way people perceived me for having long blonde hair. I was 19 before I had the courage to wack it off the way I always wanted to. Sure it was mostly a late in life rebellion and my hair was rough but the feeling of freedom was completely worth it. After years of heavy hair weighing me down, pixie cuts were the best ever. After almost 10 yrs of short hair it's time for a change but I'm not feverish to reach my goal length just yet. Sure I might be speaking LHC blaspheme but I'm honestly enjoying the phases in between.
Story not so short I wouldn't return to my waist length blunt cut hair if you paid me (ok, maybe I would if you paid me a lot and it wasn't a blunt cut). For now, the goal of APL is plenty for me.

You don't have to want extreme lengths to be welcomed here. Long hair means something different to each of us. Some aspire to the extremes, some don't. We have members here who were once extreme longhairs and now have short hair.
We may come here for the hair info, but most of us who end up staying do so because of the community.

You're still welcomed here no one will throw you out because you don't want extremely long hair. As you stated you went from wanting bsl now you're eyeing waist length hair. See there's a chance you might reach waist length and want to further that. This is what this place is about growing our hair to one length then deciding to grow further. Plus learning proper care as you stated already. If you reach waist and decide its not for you-you can cut back to a desired length. We won't judge you for this.

Of course not! For one thing, BSL is still plenty long by most standards, and for another, plenty of members here have had long hair and now have short hair--including me. I grew my hair out to past hip, then wanted to go curly girl and for various reasons needed it shorter to do so, and now my hair is about SL. I imagine at some point I'll grow it out again, but for now I'm liking it short. You can love long hair even if you don't want it for yourself, and the hair care tips you learn here are just as applicable to short hair.

I think a large focus of this forum is on hair health as opposed to necessarily hair length. :) There are plenty of members who only want medium-length hair, but they want it healthy and gorgeous and that's why they come here. You're certainly not alone or not allowed to be here! ;)

There are people on the forum who have pixie cut hair who are here for hair care advice or just to chat with folks they know, there is no set hair length goal to be on the forum, yes the focus of this forum is long hair but this is a very open and inviting bunch, in fact you will seldom even see an argument here, and when you see one most of the time it will be civil.
Now also remember some of us here have a pretty skewed idea of what long hair is, many here think that anything shorter than waist is not long, some say even longer, while in reality in the rest of the world's eyes waist is pretty damned long. In most of those style guide for hairdressers chin or shorter are short, chin to shoulder length is half long and anything below the shoulders are long, so by that standard bra strap length is long. Also bra strap length is a pretty versatile length, you can bun it with at least some buns, you can french twist it, you can pony it, braid it, leave it loose, whatever you want, you can do allot with and there is nothing wrong with being at this forum to get ideas for how to care for any length of hair. So welcome. :D

hello sister of the same mum :p as child and teenager I always had bobs, lobs, "Rachel" hair, I used to always blame my mum for not letting me have long hair. Then came all the postpuberty damage; blowdrying, dyeing etc...
I came here not being sure how long my hair would even grow and hoped that I could get to APL and maaaaybe MBL. Now I'm at APL and I want WL, maaaaaaaaybe HL - if my hair lets me.
APL seemed so long for me - now not so long anymore but still longer than ever. I catch myself looking at celebrity hairstyle pictures and thinking 'my hair is longer than that'. longer. longer. longer. shorter. saaaame...?
With long hair comes great responsibility :P I wasn't prepared that it would get stuck everywhere if not tied back.

Nobody will hate you for that. BSL/Midback is pretty long by normal standards. And if you at some point decide you want to go shorter again, we're still not going to shun you. ;)
But just saying, goals may change. I came here with very damaged waist/hip length hair, and my first goal was a healthy hip. I chopped my hair to BSL/midback and started growing it back + microtrimming. First my goal changed to tailbone (I'm almost there now, and it feels so short!!). Then it became classic. Then I started toying with the idea of having thigh length hair. Suddenly knee length became my dream, and I decided to just change my goal to terminal and let my hair grow as long as it can get.

As you see, it's ok here. :) I wanted something like hip length hair when I joined here. I was at BSL then. I chopped it to pixie and after that I feel like APL or BSL or somewhere inbetween could be enough and I am quite happy with my collarbone length hair now too. I don't want to wear it up all the time and for me very long hair would be a serious safety risk.
But yeah, people tend to change goals in here...

I think I had a short spurt when I was younger when it was past collarbone, but once I was a teen/young adult, I had pixie cuts in varying styles till I officially decided I wanted long hair. So this is all new to me, length wise (still learning the terms!), but I'm loving all the health advice and styling tips. Yeah man!

Growing out from a decades long buzz cut, I'm currently shooting for chin-length or maybe shoulder, I don't know yet. Either way I haven't been kicked out yet. Maybe I've just slipped under the radar. For aesthetic preferences I can't explain, I don't think I'd want to ever go longer than armpit length-ish, or maybe whatever bsl is on guys who don't wear b's. Future-me might disagree, but present-me doubts it.

I think people are sad to see something beautiful vanish (as I'm sure everyone agrees UltraBella's hair is), and it takes a little time to recognise that it's been replaced by something equally beautiful (ie, her new style).

I have a deep dark, dirty little secret- I think anything longer than shoulder is long-I'm so embarrassed. Not long enough for ME, mind you. When I first came here, I thought waist length was enough, no wait, hip. Well, actually , classic would be fun. Oh what the heck why not terminal? So that's my goal now. I don't even know what it will be, or how long I'll have to wait-six years, right?

I'd agree with you, AmyBeth... in today's culture of the stacked bob/pixies, I'd consider shoulder length as long, too... but here it's probably labeled as short. ; )
I loved the pixie cut on me, but now I just want a change, and besides, no one else liked the pixie. Not that my hair gets to be determined by others, but I got really, really tired of being goaded on to grow it out and not have "a man's style" (major eye roll and sigh).

I basically still think that when you reach APL you have 'long' hair, too.
And I think waist is 'very long'
Though I am a real admirer knee length (I'm always scoping out that forum because it looks like fantasy hair on there).
A year plus on LHC has not changed my opinions, because LHC does not match up with what I see everyday in real life. In real life, when I see an APL person, they definitely have longer than average hair.
I do mean full APL though. flat-ironed to death to stretch it out with completely see-through ends at APL does not look long to me, no offense if the person who has it likes it that way, but I don't think its long then. I thinks its like someone saying they sing soprano but actually straining and cracking on all the high notes, if you know what I mean.

I came here with shoulder length hair and first decided on BSL as my goal, which then changed to hip and then TBL. I got to BCL stretched, and recently chopped back to MBL. My hair feels shockingly shorter, but also super healthy and blunt. :D

It wasn't me who said that. But that is what I've recently decided. I love my hair highlighted, as well as flat ironed and curled. I also want longish hair, so my compromise is BSL (maybe an inch longer, but no more). Long enough to be called and felt long (to me anyway), but not so long that I need to be overly concerned about damage.
At one time I felt guilty for loving my hair heat styled and highlighted. But not anymore. My hair is for me, and it's mine to wear and enjoy how I like it. So that is what I intend to do :)

On the other hand, I may not make it that far... it's going to be a long trip, especially with the wedding in june that may cause some serious hair decisions to be made. I will always strive to keep my hair BSL+ for the ease of updos (except for my brain saying to chop all the damage when my virgin hair hits chin... but I think I like shoving my hair up too much, I've never been above APL!) but I have no idea what I'll eventually want, I sort of want to try for classic just because, but no idea if I'll really want that length, I could think GET THIS STUFF OFF ME by TB. Okay, I need a little clarification, please! I find myself noticing people's hair lengths a lot more, and today I realized... is BSL where the strap ends and meets the band, or is it the bottom hem of the band? Because that is a good inch + difference. I noticed a woman's hair who reached to the bottom of her bra compared to a woman of the same height where I could see her bra colour from her tee, and her hair stopped where the strap ends. Which one is true BSL?
AmyBeth
October 5th, 2013, 05:09 PM
I think most of us consider the hair touching the top of the strap to be BSL. That's very kind, isn't it? You can go shopping for a bra with the highest strap possible!:p Hike it up!

I came here after I cut my damaged mid-back/beyond BSL hair, wanting to start over and growing to waist. I'm above APL now and I quite like it. It looks thick, has volume, ends look great,... So I'm not sure about waist anymore.
I still want and like long hair and I will grow it, so I will see if waist length (healthy hair, without tapered ends) looks good on me at all. I would rather have it shorter, if my current goal length doesn't suit me. To be honest, I already plan cutting it back to BSL when I reach waist. ;)

LHC has seduced me into wanting classic length hair. I've not had hair that long since I was a child, and back then I didn't take care of it so it was a tangly mess that I was glad to be rid of when I got it cut back to APL. I kept my hair long most of my life but never really longer than BSL at any given time. I went through a short hair period and did all sorts of crazy dye jobs and bleaching, but gave it up when I realized my hair was straw. It took me 4 years to get back to BSL because of having to trim back all the damage, plus being a bit scissor happy afterwards trying to make "face framing" layers. Now I'm seriously trying to grow in earnest because seeing all the gorgeous long hair on this site inspired me.

I'm the same; I've actually cut to shoulder and prefer it; long hair doesn't look good on me - but love all the haircare tips here. It's not as if your goal has to be classic/knee/terminal! :)

What the hell is wrong with me? I keep seeing really, really nice bobs on women and instantly want to drive to the hair salon. WHY. I love chic bobs. I do. But... scissors are frightening and I also want long hair. I don't know if I'll be able to keep making myself stay put for another year...

(PS, I read my own post as "boobs" and panicked for a moment. But hopefully you all will read "boobs" too and get a giggle.)

Over time I've come to think of this as a haircare site. All lengths make sense in that context! :)
Haha! I came to this site saying "I want to find hairstyles for my (bsl) hair, it's getting really long!:hmm:" to
"What is this classic length?:eye:" and
"There are so many types of braids!!!:thud:" and
"...vinegar? Ok."
I'm definitely a victim of LHC brainwashing. ;)
And I totally read "boobs" instead of "bobs," too!

I re-watched The X-Files a couple of months ago. Big mistake. The main character has that lovely red bob.:crush: So, I though "It's okay, if I cut a bit more than it's necessary, it looks really great" (somehow not so much on me);). Fortunately I didn't go that short. And now I keep thinking how long my hair would be, if didn't trim so much.

Hah! I did, in fact, read "nice boobs."
I also adore short hair and I really struggled last year because I wanted an Audrey Hepburn style pixie so badly. It went way beyond two weeks, so the two-week-rule would have resulted in very short hair and then finally the sobbing and desperate growing out. I have obsessive spells so frankly, the two-week-rule just doesn't apply to me, I have to wait months before I shake off an obsession that I ultimately wouldn't want.
I've also been on LHC for... gosh... maybe 4 and a half years now? I kept my goal of hip for most of that time and only changed it to tailbone once I saw that hip was actually a very awkward length on me and it just didn't look quite right. I kept it at tailbone/BCL for the rest of that time, well over a year.
I only committed to classic as a goal recently, but that was actually not because of LHC. I had a wild and memorable involvement with someone very unconventional and he inspired me to be more daring, true to myself, and unapologetic about what I want and what I am. Not a bad legacy for a fling. So part of this new attitude extended to my hair. The reason I didn't want classic length before was because I was concerned about looking "too different." I realized that was nonsense and if I'm too different, so what?
Long story short, I changed goals, but it wasn't entirely because of LHC.
