Hey everybody! I know we have a bun picture thread, but I'd like to narrow it down and make one dedicated to sock buns! I don't see many sock buns around here on LHC! I never wanted to wear a sock bun because I thought of it as cheating. But I gave in and tried one yesterday with a baby sock. I felt like less sock, less cheating...it was a little hard but mostly my hair just wrapped around itself and the baby sock gave it somewhere to start. p.S. I have waist length hair, 3.25 in ponytail

I'd love to see everyone's take on the sock bun, donut bun, mock sock bun, whatever you wish!
also what is everyone's opinion on these buns? Too fake? Cheating? Anyone have experiences making their own donut out of shed hairs? Share away!

Also, I've attempted the lace braided sock bun. Didn't work haha. Anyone have luck with this?

First baby sock sock bun!

Day 2:

As you can see, day two is a little messier, but still not bad! I kinda like the messiness, maybe that's just me though. It was really comfortable to sleep in, In the morning I had to bobby pin it back in place a bit. Also, in the last pic you can see my part, I swear my part is so permanent it really wants to be there to matter what. I know side track, anyone have this issue though?

love the thread :) joining in - I'd love to contribute with my own pictures in the near future! I wish I could wear this bun more often, but because I'm a cyclist and I wear a helmet I can't, really :/

And no, I don't think it's cheating. I mean - when I see someone with a sock bun I know that they have a bun maker inside their bun but... so what? I don't know how you'd be able to get this look any other way. My bun maker is rather large ;)

and the middle part thing. My scalp is relentless when it comes to that - it's my scalp's "default setting".
I guess the good thing with this is that when I do a side part it's really nice and voluminous.

I know you can do it by putting your hair in a ponytail and then on the last tie only pulling it through halfway, for a messy bun type, and with that pulling it around in a circle like a slinky and pinning. My hair was too long to do this and you could see through pieces, it just didn't look good!

But I hope you find some time where you can wear it! I hate to have to wear a helmet a lot!

oh! of course, I forgot! This girl (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67eSgJ95nD4)made a funny video of how she makes that looks. I could never work that out with my hair, plus I don't like to use too many bobby pins and also, I don't like 'hollow' styles, where the bun is hollow inside - I much rather use a filler, such as a bun maker :)

also, I really don't like the harsh material a bun maker is made out of. so I put an old stocking leg around it to make it 'silky' rather than rough.

yeah... the helmet thing is annoying but there are ways to go around it. do the style when you arrive at the destination is one of them ;) and sock buns are so easy to make

LAG93
October 2nd, 2013, 02:06 PM
I love her! Haha but yeah I don't like hollow styles, I'm way too cluzty and I bump my hair a lot. The nylon is a good idea, less breakage

I'm liking this bun more and more it took my literally a minute and it's stayed for two days! Pretty amazing

I know, she has this awesome personality!! and even though that video is so long it's so great to watch :D

oh, one more thing. one of my milestones this year was being able to do the sock bun the proper way, as in working the bun maker up the ponytail and rolling the hair up - I was thrilled to learn that it actually covers the whole filler and that there are no gaps! last year I could only lay my hair on top of it and tuck the rest under.

October 2nd, 2013, 03:09 PM
LAG93, your hair looks beautiful in a sock bun! I don't think it is cheating at all. Just a cool way to make a different style. I have only done a sock bun a few times. I can't seem to wear one without it giving me a ginormous headache :(. I don't get headaches from regular buns, just sock buns.

LAG93
October 2nd, 2013, 03:40 PM
stachelbeere congrats on the milestone! You would probably be able to do the lace braided sock bun pretty easily then. I ended up with so much braid and no sock bun, I don't know haha

jen5972 thank you! I can imagine with longer thicker hair than mine a sock bun would hurt a lot, it does seem to pull in the one area where the pony is.

stachelbeere
October 2nd, 2013, 03:47 PM
lace braided sock bun? I'm intrigued, is there a tutorial? :D

also, I normally don't make the pony tail. it does get a bit messy to roll all the hair up but once you get to the critical point that half the hair won't get into the bun maker your just need to tuck the hairs in... somehow. doing this relieves the scalp from any pulling :)

Yeah on YouTube there is a good one by cute girls hairstyles, http://http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RK0pZxcQn60 (http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=RK0pZxcQn60)a mom does it on her daughter, it's adorable but hard to do on yourself! I will definitely try no ponytail next time, I'd think a couple bobby pins could hold it. I got a sea salt spray from lush that I used to hold, worked pretty well, but I'd only do it on greasy hair cause it's drying..

I can't wait to see more of your guys's pics! Also I'd love to see sock bun curls! I just took mine out and got brilliant curls, but my hair needs washing so I doubt I'll wear them tomorrow

ETA: Sock bun curls!! Wow I love these, they shortened up my hair a lot. Sorry for my greasy hair if you can tell. I hate to wash these out :( my hair is never curly like this!

Not sure what's prettier, the sock bun or those amazing curls... okay I have to go with the curls, as a straight-y who is 99.9pct heat free, I do have a wee thing for lush curls and volume :crush: Sigh, I guess it's time for me to take yet another shot at mastering the elusive sock bun... try as I might I just cannot get the hang of it! Any tips anyone? I feel like I'm missing some trick of the trade here...

This was my first time trying it! I took a baby sock and cut a hole in the toe, rolled it up. I put my hair in a high pony and pulled that through the sock, rolled the tip of my pony around it a couple times and started rolling towards my head, it just magically formed, and it held all day(two days) with lush's sea salt spray. My hair was on day two when I did it, so not clean but not super dirty yet I think maybe that made it easier? I'm not sure!

LAG93: Did your mist your hair first to get those gorgeous waves, or was it dry?

Cross posting this from the bun picture thread. I make a high pony and then pouf it over the sock and braid the ends because I haven't been brave enough to try rolling it.

Nope I put my sock bun in dry, then misted with sea salt spray once it was in, but mostly on my baby hairs. It was in for two days so that may be why they held so well!

And for your bun did you lace braid it! Or just regular braid and wrap it around?
I couldn't get the lace braid to work at all!

TrapperCreekD

Ooh, I want to try that. I didn't notice any significant waves, but I only wore it for part of a day so it probably wasn't long enough to really set the waves.

Yeah, it's just a regular English braid - I haven't tried a lace braid yet.

I love sock buns for sleeping and lazing about the house--they look a little too...ballerina-ish?...for me to wear out and about, though. I found a great tutorial on crocheting a bun form and made a couple in different sizes using yarn close to my hair color...if anyone is a crocheter on ravelry, here's the pattern (http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/better-than-a-sock-bun-shaper).

I used to figure skate when I was younger, so I still have a secret love for all things dance like :D but I do feel like I'm on the rink with it a bit, not a good feeling for everyone
Also, that is awesome! I wish I could crochet but I'm just not that skilled :/

LAG93 your hair is beautiful! I love the sock bun curls on it!
I tried today to do my first sock bun, but I've been really a disaster at doing it! I thought my hair was too long, but it's just about WL o_O
I couldn't manage to flip it more than once without messing everything. I need some practice :)
Anyway it looks lovely on you!

Flick6
October 4th, 2013, 05:18 AM
I can't manage it either :( I have only tried rollign it down and it is just a mess! I might try this smoothing over business and see if that looks nice. I really want to be able to roll it down. It look so easy when someone else does it, but I suspect layers make it harder? Thats my excuse anyway!

LAG93
October 4th, 2013, 08:07 AM
Federica thank you! my hair is WL as well, but its probably thinner than yours, 3.25 p.t. It may be difficult on thick hair. but try just sticking with the roll all the way down, just keep rolling, just keep rolling ;P once you finish if there are messy pieces, its not too hard to pin them into the rest!

Flick6Layers would definitely make it harder! there is a youtube video i mentioned earlier from cute girl hairstyles, they show the smoothing over and creating a lace braid with the extra length, it looks so pretty but i havent mastered it yet!

I love sock buns! :disco: I use one of the dbf's old socks that I cut and rolled up. I can only do them correctly when my hair is damp at least because it's so thick it only listens when wet, lol. I put my hair up in a high ponytail with a scrunchie because a regular elastic thingy is way too tight for my hair, I roll my hair down around the sock (which is kind of hard for me because my hair isn't all one length, that's why my bun is so messy) and secure it with another scrunchie around the base. Without the base scrunchie my hair will get all loose and mess up badly. This style doesn't seem to pull at my hair anymore than a regular bun and give me headaches, then again I always put them at the top of my head so maybe that has something to do with it. I have to leave them in for at least two days or else my hair wont be dry and the curls wont stick around...sometimes even after two days my hair is still a little damp! Buns are the best way for my hair to come out frizz free too so it's a win win for me. :D

I wanted to add that I had tried the wrap around sock bun method but that did not work for my hair, it kept for a couple of hours but it fell out of the bobby pins. I think maybe I either didn't pin it right or just didn't use enough pins.

Thank you for inspiring me to try again! Today I managed to get all my scrappy layers into a sock bun (haor was a bit damp still) andd it looked really good! I didnt manage to get pics, but will next time :)
The best bit was towards the end of the day I was getting a bit of a head ache so I took it down. I was at the photocopier and one of my co workers was all astounded at my curls, and said "hhow did you do that? with a curling iorn?" when I told her it was from my bun she was shocked. :) I was a bit chuffed. I like sock buns. I usually do some kind of braids with my ends after. Sometimes I use a ribbon around the hair tie, and then braid the ribbon into the rest of my hair. I've tried doing the whole rolling my hair down with the sock, but I don't like the look. I do want to try it for the curls though.

Could someone post pictures of the socks/tool they are using for this? I feel like my hair is so thin I will need a baby sock! I can't find a brown sock appropriate for this... does anyone use nylons as I've seen some people suggest? I really want to try this style from now on for updos and curls but I haven't even started to try it because I'm afraid my hair won't hide what is inside the bun.

sorry it's dark so the picture won't come out great...
my 'sock' is one of these black rough mesh bun makers (about 10 cm in diameter, 2,5 cm thick) and I put a black stocking over it so it's more gentle on my hair... I'm thinking that you can find stockings in all kinds of different brown - beige tones, maybe you should colour match them to your hair?

also, it depends on how you're making the actual bun - are you rolling it up or are you layering your hair over it? if I layer my hair over the bun maker it will ALWAYS show. I had to get to CBL+/APL to be able to roll it up sufficiently. if you have BSL hair you should be able to do this...?

Does anyone have a good video tutorial on how to do a sock bun? I never thought of using a babys sock and now it makes sense because when i used my own sock, my bun was HUGE and soooo messy, I tried using my 6 year old sock as well and again, to big and to messy (my hair is BSL) so maybe my 1 year olds sock will work lol ive ruined so many socks by now *looks down guilty like*. So im to messy with my buns which results in having to use a LOT of pins and thats why i havent done it in so long... I will try it again soon tho, i LOVE buns, i just have a lot of trouble mastering it.

Has anyone with wavy/wurly hair tried doing a rolled sock bun? I can't, for the life of me, seem to roll a sleek, or at the very least, tight bun - they always turn out poofy. Every tutorial video I've seen, everyone has straight hair that rolls nicely. When I take it out, I have some nice curls but the rest of my hair - about half - is a disastrous, undefined, frizzy mess. :justy: My hair also feels drier than it's usual dry self after doing this... maybe spraying on some diluted condish would help?

My hair is wavy and I am not the best at these yet, but here goes:

I had to dampen my hair a bit by spritzing it with water before I rolled it.

I also did one on my 9 year old daughter. Her hair is really wavy/curly so it was a bit messier, but really cute:

I'm going to attempt it again this week and possibly get some pics. I hope I can get my hair curly!

I've never been able to get this style to work; the bun never ends up flush with my head so it looks like I've gotten a false bun and stuck it on top of my hair. Anyone have any suggestions to help me?

My favorite variation of the sock bun :) :

French braided from the nape, I found it surprisingly easy actually. Popped a stick through because it feels a lot more secure.

Someone probably came up with this before me but as I was looking for socks to use, I found a pair of fishnet stockings.. They're awesome for this! Very lightweight, and so easy to use sticks in the bun, since the sock is basically made of holes :D

My hair is slightly wavy and I too couldn't handle a rolled sock bun at first.
I only managed it after a great lot of practice, and it still doesn't work for me every time.
For my layered and tapering hair, the bun and the resulting curls work best in a high ponytail, rather than low.
Also when making the bun, after each roll try slightly pulling the bun away from your head to tighten the strands around the sock.

Could maybe a couple of extra hair pins make it work ? Sorry if I'm not much helpful.

I use fishnet stockings too :D.
They were torn, I thought "why not make a sock bun ?" and voilą !
Awesome bun by the way :)

I found if you keep rolling the bun until you hit the base of the ponytail and wrap the bun on top of the base of the ponytail nice and snug, the bun holds flush to your head and you don't even need pins to hold it up. I still use a pin or two because I am always afraid it will dislodge and fall apart....updo with no pins or sticks...the insanity!

OK, this may sound stupid, but how do you get the bun to go over the base of the ponytail? By the time it's wound that far I can't get it to fit around a hair tie. Maybe I need a bigger sock?

I am not sure what size you are using, but I use an adult's trouser sock so it's a bit thinner and most likely stretchier.

Oh, stretchy would help. I actually knitted something as I didn't have any hair-coloured socks, but I used worsted weight wool so it may have been too thick.
