No shampoo stands out as the best, but as far as conditioner goes, Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition conditioner (old formula before cones) was incredible. Truly the best I've ever tried. It was very disappointing when they changed their formula. I'm not against cones, but it really wasn't the same and felt a bit drying. Admittedly, it could have been due to other ingredients, but in any case, it just wasn't as good anymore.
ETA: Honorary mention to Redken anything. I should pick up some of their shampoo and conditioner as a treat.

I have only used Redken Clear Moisture at the hairdressers, but my hair seems to love it. I really like the Joico line and Aphogee. I will occasionally use Herbal Essences conditioner, but not too often because using it daily seems to dry my hair out. The red one (made for long hairs) is my favorite, I love the smell and the way it feels.

Also considered my list of favorite things that have since been discontinued. Okay, not all, but most!
My absolute fav was Bath & Body works Bio shampoo and conditioner (straight & sleek) always got compliments from hair dressers on my hairs condition while I used this.
Back to Basics shampoo and conditioner (apple ginseng)
Aussie 3 minute miracle (early 90s formulation)
Bumble and bumble Seaweed shampoo and conditioner. Love the shine I get from this!! But in an effort to be nicer to my hair hair I've gone sulfate free.

With shampoo, so far sulfate-free shampoos have been best for my hair. I'm currently using L'oreal Eversleek Sulfate-free Intense Smoothing Shampoo and I'm really liking it so far but haven't used it enough to have a more concrete opinion. With conditioners I tend to buy the cheaper conditioners that smell best (for me this means scent would stay a while in my hair) or have scent that doesn't interfere with the scent in my shampoo. Sometimes I buy conditioners that fit all three criteria.

I've done all the fancy brands all the way to Wen, and I did all the drugstore brands all the way to V05. I CO so i'd say my ultimate conditioner I keep coming back to is just the cheap ole devil's cocktail "Pantene Ice Shine" or Pantene Straight hair series. Oh but for Clarifying i'd have to say V05 Kiwi clarifying shampoo works the best at stripping my hair off of coney buildup.

On my oilier at roots, drier at ends fine hair (that's prone to shedding), I like:
-Bath & Body Works Signature moisturizing shampoo paired with the volumizing conditioner
-Prell shampoo
-Finesse volumizing shampoo & conditioner
-George's aloe shampoo
-Hugo Naturals orange vanilla conditioner (not the shampoo)
-Aubrey Organics camomile volumizing conditioner
-Mirta de perales balsam conditioner
-Clairol Herbal Essences smooth collection & shine collection shampoo paired with the shine collection conditioner
I've tried everything from high end, to almost everything at whole foods/ health food stores, lush, homemade natural products on etsy, etc and the above products seem to work the best on my hair. Trader joes used to have an "essential" shampoo & conditioner in purple bottles that I liked, but they got discontinued. Revlon Flex, agree shampoo, faberge organics, revlon aquamarine, breck gold (original, not the yucky dollar tree version) & a few others that are no longer being made used to work well for me.

Conditioner:
Alchemy, Avocado and Calendula
Natural Secrets, Goatsmilk Moisturising Conditioner (Very highly recommend)
Dr. Organic, Organic Rose Otto
Avalon Organics, Ylang Ylang Shine Conditioner (Very highly recommend this one also. I really want to try out their other conditioners but they're sometimes difficult to find in stores)
Seven Wonders, Moroccan Treatment Conditioner
Natralia Nourish, Avocado and Jojoba

Ceruleansky, I think so. I think they also had a 'mud' back in the day that I also liked.
I should also include what I'm using now:
Giovanni Smooth as silk shampoo (glycerin free formulation) is the best sulfate free poo I've used and has allowed me to stretch washes to every other day
Dermorganic conditioning masque~ cone free and good slip. I actually use this as my rinse out conditioner.

I love Shea Moisture's moisture retention shampoo - it makes my hair lay really nicely and gives it more curl - but it makes it a little frizzy and dull if I use it more than twice in a row. I also really like Tresemme naturals nourishing moisture conditioner (the formula without alcohol)

Shampoo:
Herbal Essences (the old line!), loved pretty much all their shampoos back in the day, but my fave was the jojoba and rose hips one. So glad they recently re-released it!
Inecto Coconut shampoo - very light and not too thick, also smells great.
Lush Godiva solid shampoo - Great for my oily hair and wonderful jasmine smell!
Neutrogena anti-residue - Best clarifying shampoo I've tried thus far, really removes build-up effectively.
Conditioner:
Inecto Coconut conditioner - Like the shampoo, it's very light, cone-free, smells lovely and leaves my hair shiny and soft.
Pantene Ice Shine - Best cone-laden condish ever
Herbal Essences - the old ones, again
Morrisons Wild Raspberry & Jojoba conditioner - Cone-free, really good for CO washing. Doesn't smell anything like raspberries, lol, but you can get a nice lather on the scalp with it, better than other simple conditioners I've tried for CO so far.

Renpure Originals Argan Oil Formula shampoo, conditioner, and leave-in. I used to buy whatever was gentle, smelled good, and was on sale, but now I seek out the ROAOF because nothing leaves my hair looking or feeling better.

That was a great shampoo! I completely forgot about it until you just mentioned it. I liked the "walnut" formula.

Suave professionals sleek shampoo is really great. I have bought it again and again.
Pantene aqua light shampoo, another great one, makes my hair shiny and my scalp feel great. I have bought it twice.
Conditioners- I like tresemme luxurious moisture, for detangling. And vo5 kiwi lime squeeze, for lightweight moisture.

Pureology Nanoworks Shampoo and Conditioner, until they changed the formulation. I wouldn't buy it anyway because it was obscenely expensive, but I got it for cost at the time.

I think my best results have been from Wella System Professional's "Recover" shampoo and conditioner. Unfortunately it's a salon brand and too expensive to use regularly.
Among affordable drugstore brands, I'm REALLY happy with Shiseido's Tsubaki "Shining" shampoo and conditioner, the one in the red bottles. This is good stuff. I have an oily scalp and dry ends, and it leaves my hair feeling balanced. Stretching washes hasn't worked for me, so I've started washing frequently again, and the Tsubaki line is gentle enough to accommodate that.

I co wash now so I don't use shampoo but when I did the best I've ever used was shampoo from Toadstool Soaps on Etsy. It's pretty good as far as cleaning without stripping the hair and her scent list is fantastic! The best conditioner for me is just the Suave Naturals in the strawberry scent. Most conditioners make my hair seem frizzy and coated (cone's maybe?) but suave makes my hair feel like silk and it costs like a dollar so thats a plus lol.

Before I start to ramble, I gotta briefly mention my hair type - very greasy scalp, dry lengths, thick East Asian hair. I'm into using sulphate-free products for now. So here we go:
Max Green Alchemy Scalp Rescue Shampoo - Very gentle and doesn't strip the hair. My only issue with this is that it doesn't quite clean my scalp effectively with prolonged use. So I use a clarifying shampoo about 1-2 times a week to get rid of the gunk from my scalp.
Mukti Botanique Shampoo - This cleans a little better than the MGA shampoo, but it can also be a little more drying. I alternate between the two shampoos.
Rare Elements Pure Shampoo - I got this because this is a really luxurious shampoo with lovely ingredients. Using it once every so often is fine, but it just cannot be a daily shampoo for me because it's just too rich and gentle. In other words, I have to use an obscene amount if I want to clean my scalp properly. It's such a pity really. I imagine this would be fantastic for people with dryer scalps.
Rare Elements Essential Conditioner - Like the shampoo from this line, the ingredients are luxurious. But unlike the shampoo, this is a staple for me. It's thick, creamy, smells divine and works beautifully on the lengths of my hair, which are dry.
So yep, that's my list so far!

Giovanni Wellness Shampoo and Conditioner with Chinese Herbs. This set smells divine, soothes my troubled scalp, and leaves my hair feeling amazing. I love it so much I went back to the store and bought 5 more bottles so I wont run out any time soon. I don't use Conditioner very often, but I bought 2 bottles of that for when I do. I love them both.

The best shampoo I've ever used has been the Naked range from Boots (only available in the UK, sadly) - it's sulphate and silicone free, not tested on bunnies, and the bottle is made from partly recycled plastic. And it works really well for my hair.
I'm more indifferent to conditioners. All the silicone-free ones I've used have worked pretty much the same.

Some twenty year ago there was a John Frieda shampoo for dry and damaged hair in a royal blue bottle, my permed AND box blonde hair seemed to like that. And I miss Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition: currently I am very fond of Schwarzkopf Gliss (Kur) ultimate volume conditioner.

And I miss Garnier Fructis Triple Nutrition.
So many people seemed to love the old formula, but I never tried it. What did they change about it? Maybe if enough people protest, they will bring back the old formula. It sounds like it was really great & helpful to a lot if people!
Another one that I liked & totally forgot about until my hair stylist reminded me of it is Focus 21. You can still buy it online. I liked the sea plasma shampoo, reconditioning treatment & moisture mist. Very retro 80s
