View Full Version : Wondering about this hair style I've seen in anime...

I quite like this hair style I've seen in a few anime, where the character has long hair apart from simple cheek/chin layers at the sides of the face.

I'm thinking getting a haircut like this in the future (probably more like the second image, of Orihime, with a side parting and not quite so blunt cut layers) but I can't think how exactly to describe it to a hair dresser.. cos I feel like they would be called 'face framing layers' but when I look up pictures of real life models with that kind of hair cut, it's all layered and feathered a lot, which I don't want. Could anyone help? I don't really want to bring in anime photos to a hair dresser, haha.

Back in the 90s we called that 'feathering' (as opposed to layering). No idea if a hairdresser would still recognise the term (or if it might have been UK-specific).

I'm not sure if this is exactly what you're looking for, but if you google image search 'hime haircut' it might help.

Maybe those are the models you've seen already, but I thought I'd comment just in case anyway. :)

If you part your hair down the middle, then bring each side forward, smoothing the sides to the front, then cutting vertically, you'll get those layers. Best bet is asking for "the Rachel".

I'm pretty nervous to try cutting my own hair, but I might try it.. :)

and yeah I've heard of the hime cut, I guess what I'd like is a hime cut but minus the full fringe!

I never would have thought the "Rachel" would have been considered "Anime!" Of course, I'm old as dirt, so maybe this cut is now being featured in anime productions?

For a while, some years back, this style was on 7/8ths of the heads walking the earth. I absolutely would NOT try cutting it myself, though, as it is imperative it hangs right or it is sort of a stringy mess.

Are you talking about bangs like Aerith's from final fantasy?

I have similar. Right now they are pretty long though.
Short right here.

Can kinda see them long here:

Edit:

It's about time to trim them so I can document the process for you.

As far as I remember, Hime cuts involve some bangs and need very straight hair to "work", at least if you want that kind of "anime" look :).
I'm a bit embarassed, I can't tell if this is a wig or not, but it looks quite realistic in my opinion... http://http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/139/2/7/2774f3d8dd73d866d81495bb18355afd.jpg (http://fc01.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2010/139/2/7/2774f3d8dd73d866d81495bb18355afd.jpg)

Edited again: sorry, I didn't notice you dislike bangs, sorry :(. I think Rachel 90's face-framing layers are really the best description of a cut like the hime.

Totally OT, but you and the Naughty Mess are gorgeous, Seeshami:wink:

Ooh, Seeshami I love that look. I've been having my stylist do something similar for the past year. I call it chin length bangs or face framers. He cuts that section and then there's a drop to the next part where he does steep layers only down the front. The back has no layers and is a gentle U. This is such a great cut especially when you want to put your hair in a bun or braid but still have something interesting going on around the face.

Essentially it's just a hime cut without the bangs.

And what's wrong with bringing anime pictures as opposed to "real" pictures? I brought pictures of Yuna from Final Fantasy 10 when I wanted to get my hair cut like hers; I didn't know how to describe it to my stylist at the time (she was an older Chinese woman, so the problem was that she wouldn't understand, not that I didn't know how to describe a layered bob with side-bangs).

Thank you. The Mess has been doing a lot of bowing today and he got to trance dance today so he is ExHausTEd and not typing. He told me to type it that way.

In the braid thread a zillion pages ago I posted that picture and some one pointed it out to me. I cannot remember who she was.

Maybe you can find a human model picture. I think you really really need to bring a picture to the hair dresser (even if it's an anime picture). If you try to only describe what you want you most likely will end up with a different hair style.

Yeah this is the kind of hair style I'm thinking of :) That would be great if you could document the trimming process, thanks! :)

And yeah, Dandelion6, main reason I like this hair style is that I can have some hair hanging down when I have it tied back.

Btw, I think the hime cut is a really nice style too, but the fringe I'd find hard to work with my hair, as it has a slight wave in it and a bit of a cowslick!

Just a caution... I tried cutting those sorts of layers a while back. They are NOT cute (on me, anyway) if you tuck the layers behind your ears. Think little spindly wings sticking out behind your ears....

It was awful, so I cut them shorter, toward a sideswept thing (which doesn't seem to work with my face geometry and glasses, either). Now I'm growing them back out, so they're going to start winging again in a few months.

So first video was kiboshed and in the second everything is pretty lopsided because I had to re do it and wasn't actually cutting my hair so I didn't worry to much about it.
