View Full Version : I need to expand my bun and braid repertoire!

Ok...I can do a lazy wrap bun and whatever a "regular" braid is called. I am trying to stretch my washes, but my hair gets really greasy second-day so I have to wear it up on non-wash days if I'm going to do this. And doing the same bun or just a ponytail every day annoys me, as I've been admiring all you LHCers who can do tons of gorgeous buns at a moment's notice!
So, can anyone offer a little help? I like buns, like braids and LOVE half - ups. I really need:
1. Recommendations on which hairstyles are good for beginners with hip length hair
2. The best or dummy proof YouTube tutorials on said hairstyles
Or
3. The easiest-to-follow YouTube tutorial channels (preferably by a fellow LHCer!)
Any help in this area is so greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance guys!

I have no advise since I am in the same boat. I only know how to make a english and french braid and tend to wear my hair every day in the same style. I will be following this thread to get some ideas, if you don't mind ;)

Here are two that I just started wearing (and like):
(1) Disc Bun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y5sSEBy7HQ
(2) Jamie Leigh Bun
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J6vq6paUaF0
Both hold really well and are really quick and easy buns.

Torrinpaige and habioku are my favourites :)

Hello there fellow Islander!
I could have written the same post! Torrinpaige's channel is incredible, if you haven't checked it out yet then you should. She explains everything beautifully and she's a doll.
I love half-ups too but the hair that is left down gets very tangled, maybe even more so than when it's all down. Weird. I understand the next day greasies, it sucks but since I switched to sulfate free shampoo and I touch my scalp much less it's a little better...a little.
If you find yourself going back to your typical bun and braid, you could do double lazy wraps, or change the spot on your head where you put it. Or bun your braid. Start slow so you don't get frustrated and give up...like I do.

I don’t have a link to a tutorial, but cinnabun is easy and it looks great on longer lengths.

THe first bun i was able to pull off was a variation on a chinese bun. Ponytail your hair (braided if you wish), pencil or hair stick behind it, figure-8 your hair around the pencil once and wrap the rest securely around the pony. You might need one bobby pin to secure it, i dont use any but i have more hair too. There are a couple of different variations on the same theme also, those are easy to look up on you-tube under the title "chinese bun", thats how i found it the first time...

I'm in the same boat -- need to expand my skillset because I've spent the last ten years wearing a high-crown ponytail that's braided down its length. Like, that was my only hairstyle for ten years. So, I know about needing more options.
As others have posted, I really like torrinpaige's videos. She does them herself on her own hair and that makes it easy for me to understand -- I can't get anything from the "watch person A construct a hairstyle on person B's head" videos. Her hair channel is here:http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLF3508F6411A91FDE
Once you've watched some videos, experiment. It's important to remember that no one bun works best for everyone's hair. Many folks on LHC love the cinnabun and it's so pretty that I want to love it too... but I have trouble getting it to stay up and not fall apart. (I don't think it's a length issue. My hair hangs below my hips. There's something else going on, maybe my technique sucks. Too much twisting? Not enough twisting? I'm working on it.) I really like the security of the thing I call a nautilus, which takes me less than a minute and holds all day long. (It may not be an "actual" nautilus, but I learned how to do it from watching nautilus videos.) Other folks have other go-to buns -- the lazy wrap bun, the chinese bun, etc. and so forth.
Any bun you do "regular" can also be done with braided hair, so you can use that as a change-up. Practice does seem to be the key, though -- french and dutch braids make my arms tired before I get them done, but many people have success with those, as well.
Experiment with how you secure your buns. Do you like sticks? Forks or combs? Claw clips? Flexi-8's? Hairpins? Spin pins? Different choices may work better with different buns. If there's one you've been having trouble with, try a different method of securing it. (I am not trying to convince you to spend a fortune on hairtoys. Really.)
Finally, there's a thread challenge on LHC for "Wear your hair up xxx days" that you can contribute to if that sort of thing motivates you. There's also a "Bun Pictures" thread, with lots of inspiration for you.
Hope this helps. :)

Thanks guys!
arelrios, I don't mind at all! In fact I was hoping it might help other bun-challenged people such as myself gain some variety to our updos.
crumpet, thank you, I will definitely try those tonight! They look pretty simple so hopefully I can get them down pat!
Jenny, I keep hearing about TorrinPaige and will definitely have to check her out. Habioku seems to have similar hair to mine, so that's a plus :)
MeowScat, Yay!! A fellow Long Islander :) Good tip about the half-ups...didn't know that, and was wondering why I didn't see more pics of them around here. I've been changing the lazy wrap bun around on my head, decided I prefer low buns. I've been trying buns I think *look* super cute, like the braided Chinese bun...tried like 6 times, failed horribly each time, and got frustrated and gave up like you said lol. From now on, I'll just do one night trial of a bun each night until I get it right, so I don't get annoyed at myself and at the bun. :p

WaitingSoLong started a thread with some hair tutorials she did a few days ago with a lot of new buns in it, that was really helpful to me. Her hair is about hip length in it.

Knot bun - make a ponytail. tie it in a knot. insert hair toys to catch scalp hair so the sucker holds.
celtic knot bun - make a ponytail. tie it in a slip knot. insert hair toys to catch scalp hair so the sucker holds.
These two should be doable on ii hair that's longer than about 27". They need to be done loosely, as yoinking them to try and get a "tight" bun can be damaging. They're also stunningly easy and very pretty and helpful for your anime hair needs.

Shameless self promotion time! I did a couple vaguely tutorial-like youtube videos (https://www.youtube.com/user/OriginalPrincessBob/videos)a while back. I'd like to get back into making tutorials, some day. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy the videos and find them helpful.

Thanks PrincessBob :) I was just admiring your bearded lady pics yesterday, they were awesome! I will definitely look at your videos.
