View Full Version : How do you like your ponytail: High or low?

September 13th, 2013, 01:49 PM
I used to only ever wear low ponytails, then switched to high for a while, and now I'm getting back into low ponytails because my hair is BEGGING me to wear it down but I'm not giving in! I have a problem with low ponytails though, I get this weird like "trigger" to cut it off!!! >:( I hate that!

So, how do you like to wear your ponytail most of the time? How come?

ETA: If you don't like to wear ponytails, tell us how you prefer your buns! :D

I love *really* high ponytails. Unfortunately, my thickness often doesn't agree with me (heavy hair), and so the ponytail has to always be a really tight one - otherwise it would fall out straight away. However, it's been years since I last wore a ponytail. A shame, because the style really suits me.

High ponytails for me :). They are much more flattering on me. Low ponytails don't seem to do anything for me and the hair underneath gets tangled.

Plus if you pull a high ponytail tight enough you can take 10 years off yourself! ;) :eyebrows:

I try not to wear my hair in a ponytail. I used to wear it all the time until I found LHC and I always saw broken strands at the pony level, so I might be associating ponytails with damage now

The majority of the time when I do a ponytail is low, because I secure with a barrette. But I love to do high ponytails and make it bounce around :)

When I wore ponytails, I tended to prefer them on the lowish side -- ear level or lower. However, somewhat before I joined LHC, I found I had a HUGE chunk of breakage in the section of hair that probably supported most of the weight of my perma-pony. So I pretty much swore off every style that started with a ponytail in 2005 or 2006. I've maybe worn a pony a dozen times since, most in the few years and all of them just around the house. So, braids or buns for me!

Low or medium, because my high ponytail looks too thick and doesn't drape nicely, because my hair is almost all one length. Plus I always have flyaways when I do a high one.

I'd love to wear it high but the weight and slipperiness make it impossible. It's a low pony by default.

I only use scrunchies and they're a very silky texture and my hair doesn't seem to get damaged at all from ponytails. I can totally understand getting damage from thin elastics or scrunchies made with a rough material. When my hair gets *long* I want to do a ponytail that ties like 6 inches from the ends  Like princess garnet from final fantasy 9. I can see a lot of people on LHC are against ponytails... I can't wait till my hair is long enough to do more styles that are safer :P

I've always preferred low ponytails (at ear length or at the nape of my neck) because high ponytails give me a headache for some reason. I used to wear ponytails all the time, and still do on no-wash days, but that's just because i don't have good buns in my repertoire (just started a thread on this lol).

I have been feeling lately like ponys cause breakage, and I sometimes feel resistance and/or hear breakage when removing my elastic at night. So I think I'm done with them.

I like to wear it, in between high and low. low is too much on my neck and my hair isnt long enough for high yet :p

Oh boy, I stopped wearing ponytails a while ago. But if I do need one, I'd wear a low ponytail; my hair's too thick and poofy to look nice in a high ponytail.

Also, lol at the facelift comments! The US pretty much calls those facelifts (without the location prefix.)

I permanently lost hair in the crown area from tight high ponytails and half-ups.. so I guarantee when I get to a ponytail length I will be wearing mostly low styles.

I'm not a fan of high ponytails on anyone out of their teens. I think they either look very childish or very dominatrix-ish. I usually do a mid ear ponytail so the ponytail doesn't lay on my neck and make me sweat. My hair is getting to the point where ponytails have become uncomfortable in the past. The weight of the ponytail will pull on my scalp and make it hurt. I am also worried about hair loss from wearing a heavy ponytail. I find that ponytails are often the answer when I need to go out and my hair is a greasy mess and I don't have time to wash it. But then so is a bun!

XcaliburGirl
September 13th, 2013, 06:31 PM
I always liked a medium-high ponytail, fairly tight. Then I started realizing I was getting breakage, so I trained myself to like a low loose ponytail, in hopes it would cut down the damage.

Now that I'm used to the low ponytail, I like each about equally.

Exactly the same here! I often where my ponytail with a flexi but my hair is to heavy so it always ends up in a low one

I love wearing mine in a high one, but I never do. I find my hair pulled that tight up that high makes my scalp ache a bit.

As I am going about my day I will pull it back into a low pony/bun thing while I'm cooking, doing laundry or driving with the windows down (my a/c is out)
If I am putting it (second or third day hair, going out or working out) up 'on purpose it goes into a styled high pony and I make sure it is in nice and snug do that puppy is not coming out.
I used to dislike high ponytails, but now that my hair is getting a littlelittle length to it..I love it!

Multiple options - I prefer not to wear a pony most of the time, but I like wearing it both high and low equally. I don't like middle though.Either almost on top of head or at the nape.

Right at the middle of the back of my head, or a little higher. Fashionable super high ponytails gives me headaches, and low ponytails... just look bad. However I do wear my hair at my nape with a barrette sometimes, I don't know if it counts as a ponytail.

I like my ponytail somewhere in the middle, not high, nor low and not fastened very tightly. Then it looks "bouncy" and nice.

I change my ponytail all the time - I guess I like the variety. Sometimes I wear it high, sometimes SUPER high (think cheerleader), sometimes low, sometimes low with a part, and I also like to wear a low side pony. So many options with the ponytail! :-)

O: I wear ponytails low cause I think they look better! And yeah I'd personally count it fastened with a barrette as a low ponytail, since I'm not sure what else I'd call it!

I like mine high, a little higher than the top of my ear. I like the light kinda bouncy feeling and it doesn't seem to aggravate the frizz as much as a low one rubbing against my clothes

My fine, flat hair will get all sorts of weird puffy bits on the top if I put it in a high ponytail and don't brush it with the utmost care; even then, it'll fall down to the middle of my head in a few hours. I've pretty much stopped trying to get it to any high styles and just stick in low things near the nape of my neck. Low stuff looks better on me anyway

I won't wear pony tails because they are not protective enough. When I did, I always wanted to wear them high because they look so good, but high hurts! I had to wear them low.

I usually don't use ponytails, but if I do, I choose one of of these (one high, one low) :

I don't know what is my favourite because the low one is more cute, but the high one is more comfortable :)

I usually prefer not to wear ponytails just because I've heard so many of my friends say that hair breaks off if worn in a ponytail too often. :(

I also tend to think my hair does not look good in a ponytail, even though I have been told otherwise.
If I ever do wear a ponytail though, it's usually high; wearing a low ponytail bothers the nape of my neck.

I like my ponytail to be about ear-level, so not high and not low.

My hair is finally just long enough for a tiny English braid or a French braid which I feel are more protective and cute on me!

October 27th, 2013, 10:33 AM
Medium or high, anything done at the base of my neck just irritates me. I even start braids at about ear height (loose start, been doing it for years) as if they're started on the nape they drive me up the wall.

I like the look of a high pony, but my hair is too heavy and it pulls down or gives me a headache. Medium-to-low pony works better and stays put longer without the pain. The underside still gets really matted, though.

I would look weird with a high up ponytail so i keep it at medium length, but i do low loose once as well to try minimise the damage

I don't wear my buns super high, but they are definitely not low. For some reason, low buns just feel funny, especially with a hair stick. I do need to start switching up my placement more often though.

LauraLongLocks
October 28th, 2013, 12:15 AM
I like to switch between high and low ponytails/buns to prevent broken hairs at a perma-pony level. I also switch back and forth from parted styles, like a chinese braided bun, to single pony or braid styles to give my hair a break from the stress of same-styling.

vanillabones
October 28th, 2013, 02:34 PM
I voted high pony just because it looks better with my thin/fine hair. If I had thicker hair I would chose low pony since they show off length and is almost equal to wearing it down but still be able to be considered restrained for work. My hairline underneath looks really weird in a low pony. I wear both to switch it up.

While the look of high ponytails is nice, I find that they give me a terrible headache after about 2 hours. In addition, the tightness of the elastic used to hold up the hair worries me due to the risk of mechanical stress on the hair shaft. Low ponytails are the way to go for me!

November 10th, 2013, 02:23 AM
Low because my hair is super fine and I don't have a lot of it, so high up it just kind of dangles lifelessly. Low it's alright.. but it usually ends up in a bun anyhow.

When I wear a ponytail I generally have a high ponytail as low gets caught up in my clothes and it annoys me. I like the look of a low pony but the only way I can wear one is to do a side pony and pull to the front. Maybe more luck as my hair grows longer.

High, low, middle. It all depends on how my hair is behaving. I honestly don't wear ponytails too often, mostly just to pull my hair back in my lab classes. Don't want my hair catching fire on the Bunsen burner :)

As a guy low all the way. Just looks better on me. Though with the weather being colder I have been tying it back higher when i wear a ponytail so that it doesn't rub as much on scarves, hoodies etc.

When I was younger, I did not like having my hair in a ponytail at all as I prefer having my hair down. The times when I did wear ponytails I liked the high ponytail more but mom would say that it looked like a horse tail on me. Even when my hair was at BSL before I had it cut, I like my hair when it was down more than when it was up and even then nearly always wore my hair when I was at home.

Syaoransbear

December 8th, 2013, 05:38 AM
I don't wear them often but I prefer high as its more flattering on me and low ones always seem to get all tangled up underneath from rubbing on my clothes. If I've straightened my hair and don't want a kink (I have to wear tied back for work) then I will do a low pony held with a claw clip

High is more fun because it bounces more, and being male it shocks prudes. Low is more comfortable for sports.

I love wearing ponytails but I don't that often now because I wear a bun like almost everyday. I just prefer it.

But when I want to look at my hair or it looks nice that day I wear one in lieu of wearing it down (I hate wearing my hair down. Such a pain in the rear for me) , although I can't get a comfortable one anymore without using a flexi 8. My thick hair is too heavy and it hurts my forehead and gives me headaches and makes me think "I'm getting damage! Stressing my roots!" Fortunately the flexis actually don't tug at all and make the ponytails look that much better. I was so happy when I found that.

My bangs are still growing out so I can't wear a low ponytail or do a low bun since they wont fit in, so I'm forced to wear everything high even though I like both and lower is more comfy sometimes. Ponies I usually wear in the middle, not high or low, so I voted "like both equally" haha. I can't get away with middle buns yet though. Bangs fall out..

High ponytails for me! I prefer them both aesthetically and for comfort - low ponytails tend to get more in the way, and it always bugs me to have my hair low on my head, somehow I find it really uncomfortable.

Only thing is, my high ponytails tend to get lower and lower with time because of the weight and slippery quality of my hair. Something which I greatly resent :D I envy those high ponytails with polished napes, but they're pretty hard to maintain with slippery fingertip+ hair...

I only wear buns, it depends on what kind of look I'm going for, if it's business style, I like a high bun, if I'm going for a softer look, I'll put it in a low bun. Same for ponytails if I have to wear one, but I haven't done that in years.

Before LHC: low around the house and while sleeping, high when running or outdoors.

After LHC: low/mid height buns mostly.

Medium-high. But I really limit how often I do that, tight ponytails pull my hair really hard, and loose ones are just messy.

I've only just recently started to wear ponytails after I discovered the Invisibobbles. I prefer to wear it high-medium but I try to change it up few times during the day. My scalp is sensitive and gets sore if the pony pulls from the same spot all day long.

Low for me. When I do high ponytails I tend to be too enthusiastic about pulling it tight and then get a headache and make my follicles all sore. I was also a fan of the messy half pulled through tail once my hair got abit longer.
Now Ive discovered how easy buns are though and do one of those instead! :)

High, it looks better. Unless I put a split (no idea what they are actually called) in the front of my hair and I can only wear it low. Doesn't work when it's high.

When I wear my hair in a ponytail, i like wearing it high :) it seems to suit my face better than wearing it low

im having a dilemma about half ups. they look nice on me put quite high on the head and without a part. but everytime i wear this i have to think of ariana grande now, not that in general,i would give a crap about this type of celebs, but something inside me hates her with a passion and i dont want to look as if i got inspired by that. of course the hairstyle has not been invented by her, but the only way i can wear it due to my paranoia now is when i tie it kinda low.
pardon my useless rant, lol...

I find they look better higher up due to my skull shape, but they pull on my scalp less when they're in the middle of the back of my head.

I tend to not wear ponytails because they like to give me headaches, but I do low ponytails when I have to.

Well low ones, pretty much the first standar thing a long hair man gets to manage. Somehow I been rediscoverin it and makes me feel a bit more glam than a regular low bun

Id love to try higher ones, some friends do it and looks so freakin awesome.

But I can barealy stand a high bun so I dont think a high pony is gonna happen anytime soon.

Neither high, nor low. Medium!

Right now, due to length, a low ponytail is all I can wear. But I CAN NOT WAIT until I can wear a high ponytail again! Mostly because then I'll be able to wrap it into a bun too :).

High for sure, but I get headaches from the weight of my hair and the tightness of the ponytail, so low on lazy days.

I like mine low so it looks longer and so you can't see my crazy neck hairline as much!!!

I usually wear mine higher because my sides are shorter but I'd like to wear a low one, some day I suppose.

I like mine low and loose; it has a more romantic feel to me. However, the hubby prefers high ponies, so sometimes I reward him with one ;)

I like the look of a high ponytail much better. However, I often fix my hair into the day's bun or whatever after I get to the office, so I leave the house with my hair just held back with a clip. I guess that counts as wearing a low ponytail.

I don't often wear a ponytail, but when I do I wear a high one. The same with buns, I like to have them higher up on my head. I don't know why, I think they just feel more 'out of the way' like that.

I like both high and low ponytails equally. As my hair gets longer it's harder to get it to stay in a high ponytail :( It's just too heavy. Good thing I also like low ponytails.

I like low ponytails on other people, just not typically on me. I don't like the feel on my neck either. Buns and ponytails are both high.

I'd love to wear it high but the weight and slipperiness make it impossible. It's a low pony by default.

This is me too.

Generally speaking, I don't like to wear ponytails, although I sometimes wear a low side one when I am home and feeling sick.

I generally pull my hair straight back and tie it in the middle of my head since I find that most comfortable, but if I need to be formal for a presentation, job interview etc. then I'll part it and tie it right at the nape since I figure that looks more professional.

I prefer a high ponytail, but I can't ever seem to pull one off. Even if it starts high, the weight of my hair pulls it down in under a minute. Is there are trick to getting a high ponytail to stay put?

ETA: This was a problem I had even with BSL hair, so it's highly likely a technique problem and not a result of hair length.

I seldom wear ponytails nowadays (thank you, LHC... It was my "go to hairstyle" for many, many years), but when I do, I prefer the high ones.

I love how high ponytails look, but I think that my scalp is too sensitive and hair too heavy, as my scalp begins to hurt after a while :C Low ponytail it is, then.

I don't like wearing ponytails, but if I have to I prefer a low or medium pony. High is a bit too painful and uncomfortable.

I wear em high and higher haha, it's like begging for a headache though since I have to pull the rope really hard since my hair is so thick and slippery

I used to wear a ponytail at home every day until I found this site. Now I hardly ever wear them. If I wanted to do a nice ponytail I'd have to pull my hair straight back and that causes pulling on my scalp that hurts a lot. The messy ones I sported at home were mid to low and just caused tangles and rattiness. So no ponytails for me :D

Middle back of my head FEELS best, but doesn't look good on the shape of my skull. High looks better but is more likely to be painful and lumpy in the back. (I kind of had to learn how to do a [reasonably] comfy high ponytail because last semester I had ballet class on Thursday evenings and a class right after that then I would get home late and I had a yoga class early on Friday mornings so I would put my hair in a high bun for ballet class, sleep with it in, and save time in the morning by not having to worry about doing my hair for yoga class)

I like high, because it doesn't 'pull' as much. I have quite thick hair, that gets very heavy after a while, and I feel like when I have my ponytail on top of my head it takes some of the weight off.

high, definitely. But ponytail holders hurt my head, ribbons & flexis, or sticks & forks for a lwb pony work painlessly on my heavy hair

The UK expression is 'Essex Facelift'

Now, now, Andy, I'm from Essex, or London, I'm never really sure.

Where I was born, and where I first lived, which weren't quite the same place, but which were quite close to eachother, were in Essex, but became part of London when I was 8, although the post office took 35 years to recognise the change. Later that year, we moved back to Essex, so to speak.

After college (Loughborough University, so nowhere near London atall) I moved to Surrey, and then into London, but again into an area that the post office still called Surrey for a long time, although that's now also a London address.

If that weren't enough, all the areas of Essex I ever lived in were part of London before the Saxons came, although that was in about 600 AD.

I love high ponytails! I just can't actually wear one for too long without snagging at my hair and ripping it off, so I usually wear simple buns that don't require ponytails.

I voted that I prefer not to wear ponytails. Well, at the moment I can't wear them because my hair is too short. But when I had long hair, I never felt really comfortable wearing ponytails. High ponytails would give me a headache, and with low ponytails there would always be a strand of hair tugging painfully at my scalp :(

If I do ponytail, I do it high. I have thin/fine hair so anything that makes it look like it has volume is a winner in my book. :)
