View Full Version : Japanese styles where some of the length is down?

Hi wonderful people!

For an outing I'm going on at the end of this week I think I'd quite like to do something fairly unusual with my hair, and one of my friends adores Japan so it seems like a nice gesture to them to do something fitting. I'm really proud of how long my hair has gotten though (mid back length currently, longer than I've had it in years) so I'd like to do something that shows the length off a bit. I have some chopsticks, a fox hair pain and some sword hair sticks - is that a little too cliche? :p

Can anybody suggest anything?

I don't know, mid-back length isn't long enough for any Japanese styles I can think of. Maybe a half-up bun, but chopsticks or hair-sticks seem too generically pan-Asian or Chinese to me--you might want to get some kanzashi-style hair ornaments instead.

Personally I find the chopsticks thing offensive. There is a lot of etiquette around how to treat chopsticks and sticking them in hair just doesn't sit right with me. (However, beautifully decorated hair sticks are fine since that is what they are used for). I would go with the fox hair pin just cause it sounds cute and anything kawaii is good for me! And also foxes have a role in folk stories in Japan. Oh! You could do odango half up buns like Sailor Moon! =p

I keep meaning to make some of the flowers to put on hair toys. Here is a tutorial (http://kimonoreincarnate.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-make-japanese-kanzashi-style.html). They look easy enough!

I'd go for using the fox hair pin.

I also have some kimono silk kanzashi hair clips and a Central Asian felt hair clip that I wear all the time - they spice things up well, so if you have something like that, it would probably work.

Hope you have fun, and I'd love to see what you come up with! :flower:

Oh, and some pictures for demonstration:

ETA: beautiful tutorial, NK! These are definitely something I want to try to make myself. ^_^

Girlfriend, I got you covered.

Presenting, Binosusume, the gal who inspired my hair growth in the first place. Word to the wise, her styles are not very LHC friendly, but then again, she's got the type of hair that can withstand a lot of abuse and still come out okay in the end. All styles can be LHC friendly with some tweaking.

Dutch headband (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNM-ljZrNg4)

fishtail braid (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLzhjX3LJJ4)

hair bow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PmWVvxWvy0)

ETA: essentially, Binosusume uses a very toned down Gyaru style. Very work place acceptable and adult friendly. Some Gyaru style can be so over the top it makes me feel like I'm trying too hard to be a little girl.

Sharysa - Hmm, yes, I was thinking about the half up bun thing too. I'm not sure I've got much time to get new hair things though. I've been looking around for some modern styles where the hair might be perhaps shorter. Thanks for you reply!

hypersensitive - Sorry if I offended you, but I use them because of fond personal memories and not any kind of connotations they have. I know - I really love foxes too, so I'm leaning towards that now ^_^ Sounds like an idea - I'll take a look. Thanks for the suggestions.

neko_kawaii - Thanks for the link, very pretty!

Yozhik - Your styles are very beautiful! Thanks for the reply.

AnqeIicDemise - Thanks for the links, I really like the look of the Dutch headband one - hmm, I wonder if I could learn to dutch braid in time.

I found this: http://www.iz2.or.jp/english/fukusyoku/kosode/50.htm
Of course, this is super long hair, but the styles itself, especially b, C, L and N, seemed very wearable and easy to me. Maybe if you top that of with a nice kanzashi?

I've used chopsticks but I did it because I didn't have a lot of money. I did paint and decorate them no one knew they were chopsticks. I bought beads for mine too. I think if you decorate them they're okay less offensive.

I have no idea about japanese hair styles, but I LOVE this girl. Her styles are so nice, and her hair is beautiful.

She was pointed out to me by my MIL. She's a nail tech married to a Japanese man. She's on top of a lot of trends. (I also adore binosusume's gel nails too. Such a talented lady!)

OMG!!! thank you so much for this tutorial and this thread where I learned about kanzashi! I already made my first one from this tutorial and I found really beautiful kanzashi ornaments on the internet by an artist on deviantart - I especially love this one.

Thank you so much for the inspiration. Sorry I can't help with the hairdo - but if I were you I would make one of the flowers (it took me about 45 minutes to make the whole piece and attach it to a hair pin) and leave my hair down or do a half-up. I'd love to see pictures of what you'll do :D

If you're open to ideas drawn from Japanese art (anime, actually) I have some for you. Just a couple I really like, with views from all sides. This first is actually just a ponytail, with a simple fabric piece enclosing it, but looks lovely:

Here's one that is eats up some length, but you could do it just as well as a half up (keep in mind it requires 3 small sticks, a comb, and small fabric pieces):

The second's my favorite. :) But I love those flowers everyone is posting!
