Welcome to September 2013's hairstyle of the month! This month we are putting the focus on:

Top Knots

Do you wear yours messy? How about tidy? Do you do anything to dress it up? Let's see yours!

Happy styling!

Yay, a new hairstyle of the month thread! Okay, so when I first looked at some pictures of top knots online, I thought, "There is no way I'm doing that to my hair. It looks ridiculous!" But now that I've actually done it and taken some pictures, I quite like it. Tee hee.

Rosey, just like you I didn't think it would suit me but I put my hair into a top knot (Cinnabun) and I love it!

Is a topknot and a cinnabun the same thing? I know it's a dumb question, but I've always wondered this.

I think a Top Knot is anything done quite high up on the head. It is the position rather than the type of bun, but I'm not certain I've got it right either.

I love top knots and wear them as often as I feel is safe to do so - don't like that pulling and having an elastic on a particularly vulnerable part of my hair.

Will wear one soon and post a pic.

Felt like trying something new today and the first new-to-me thing on the list was the Bow Bun which fits into the category of Top Knot.

The back didn't photo very well so you can't really see how it is a bow from this angle.
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg632/neko_kawaii_hair/DSC09782_zpsda5bde54.jpg

But the front is quite bow like!
http://i1247.photobucket.com/albums/gg632/neko_kawaii_hair/DSC09783_zpsbc6285aa.jpg

Of course my higher than average hairline makes this look very silly, even without the frying pan.

Meiskamooska's tutorial for the Bow Bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=98504&page=24&p=2404975&viewfull=1#post2404975).

I don't wear topknots out in public but I threw my hair up into one tonight while I was cleaning. I love how it's completely out of the way when my hair is up that high on my head.

Thank you very much. That just made my day, especially since I tried some random accent-braids-bun-thing today and I'm sitting here at work feeling awkward about my hair. That's what I get for trying something new despite not having a decent mirror. I should have waited until our bathroom remodel was complete. But no, I just had to do something different despite not being able to see myself. LOL

This is the top knot I'm wearing today, made with one of my parandas. I love top knots - easy to style, comfortable and protective.

It's always been my understanding that a top knot referred to any bun-type hairstyle with all of the hair gathered on the very top of the head. Most often I see simple sock buns that are positioned on the top of the head called top knots.

Such a beautiful top knot. And I love your hair toy. I tried to use some hair sticks on mine and it was an utter fail. Your fork is the perfect pop of color against your beautiful hair color!

Thanks so much, gingerclip! I collect hair combs, so always looking for an opportunity to use them. This one actually went with the caftan I was wearing.

spidermom - A topknot is a bun/knot that sits right on top-center of your head. It can be a knot, but you usually see different styles of buns. With your hair, you could make a gorgeous topknot!

And now I am even more jealous. I love caftans. They look horrible on my body shape so I never buy them, but I'm always impressed with how comfortable and casual yet stylish they can be.

I have a question for all you top knot wearers - how on earth do you make it all so neat, particularly the long sweep up at the back?

TrapperCreekD
September 21st, 2013, 08:23 PM
I did a sock bun with braided ends - no picture, sadly.

Panth - I bend forward, hair gathered in one hand, and run the comb up the nape of my. It helps me cut down on the touching because I don't feel as compelled to constantly fix any bumps.

OMG you can top knot now!!! Congrats!! It's getting long! Yayyyyyyy

I used to love top knots and wore them regularly, but lately my hair/scalp have been super tender about them. The length, or maybe the weight, and the fact tht I only resort to a top knot with dirty hair... Idk, lately my scalp says "no! Take it down" after an hour or so.

Sometimes I flip over and french braid from the nape of my neck to the crown, then gather the hair into the bun. This keeps the back tight and not saggy. The braiding is not that noticeable on my dark hair, but I've seen pice of blondes and blonde totes where it looks really cool.

I don't know that a topknot has to be tight to the head. Observe: http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-bpspL5leOcs/ThWSCvTB8zI/AAAAAAAAAOM/mYUq8sWls0Q/s1600/top+knot+1970s+boho+vintage+hair.jpg

My hair barely reaches, and isn't heavy. (Hairspray-- I know. It's a dirty word on TLHC, but I use it!)

Wow spirals, that's really pretty.

I've been wearing a top knot the last couple of days; it's a real knot. It looks pretty good from the front but the saggy, lumpy mass up the back of my head doesn't look good at all. I guess it's going to take practice.

I might appreciate it, now.

Oh, keeping the back in place? Aloe Vera gel on slightly damp (even just misted) hair, pulled "up" the way trapperCreekD said.

Hmmmm....I tried googling Brigitte Bardot [sp?], but found what she often had was a messy bun on top, not really a knot. So then I googled "topknot 1970s."

spirals
September 24th, 2013, 11:42 PM
I'd think you would pull the hair a couple inches from the scalp and make the knot, then put the knot on the head and pin it.

TiaKitty
September 25th, 2013, 11:09 AM
I've done it by making my bun and then untwisting it, while holding it, so the sides pouf out. I think what spirals says makes sense, too. Would probably look better, as well.

khan
September 29th, 2013, 09:33 PM
When I make a topknot bending upside down, I make it tight & it still poufs on the sides. The back not so much. You could always pull/tease it out in back with a long tail comb. Might be worth the experiment :}.

This reminds me:

In the yogic tradition, a topknot or rishi knot is when you gather all your hair above your head and twirl it to make a rope, then you actually make a knot out of it by making a circle and then sliding the length in the circle and tightening it. Then you keep doing that around and around till the length is taken care of. The last little bit just goes around the base and slides under to secure itself. ;-) I used to do this alllllll the time.
