Hi everyone,
I have been having a hard time deciding what to do with my hair. I love it long and want to continue to grow it long but the ends are looking thin. I am not sure if I should trim, and if I do trim how much should I trim off. Here are two recent pictures of my hair. The first one is the natural flow of my hair and the second picture is my hair after it has been blow dried. I asked my friends on facebook and they all recommend that I get a hair cut, but I want to ask the long hair community since you understand my passion for long hair and wanting to grow it as long as it can be. Thanks for your help my appointment is on Thursday so I am getting very nervous.

If I were you I'd trim to past waist and regrow with micro trims. It does seem a bit thinner on the second picture.
However, I don't think it looks bad on the first picture at all. Going by the first picture, I'd only trim 2 inches and call it a day and continue to grow and I would think it looks good.
It depends on what you want honestly.

What kind of hemline do you prefer? If you want a nice thick blunt hemline you could trim back to waist. If you like a V cut, then I think you could trim a couple inches to even out and thicken the hemline while still retaining most of your length.

I'd like to see a nice U-hem ending at right about where that green shirt meets your jeans. It would look so well-cared-for that way, and you wouldn't lose much length.

I second spidermom - having a nice edge just an inch or two shorter than now would keep the length and look neat and healthy. I wish my hair would grow this long!

That sounds great. I had mine cut back to chin length this Spring and I do not regret that at all. Now it is super healthy and easy to care for while it grows. It looks much better, too.

I agree with a V ,as your sides appear shorter and thinner and that would hide that, plus allow you to keep the majority of your length.

I would just cut off a few inches to thicken up the hemline. It looks very pretty btw :D

I'd do a blunt cut and only cut to the bottom edge of your green shirt.

Your hair looks healthy and pretty and seems to have a lot of body and thickness except for the ends. Just a couple inches off the ends would blend them really nicely with the rest of your hair, and maybe a bit off the sides to get your hemline to a V or U shape. With your hair type a straight blunt hemline might look a bit too heavy and you would lose a LOT of length trying to achieve that; I think your thin ends just need to be cut a little to make your hemline come together beautifully.

I'd suggest a 1-2 inch trim and then micro trimming.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I think I am going to trim a couple of inches this Thursday.
Some of you have suggested micro-trims after I cut off some inches. What exactly is a micro-trim? I will post a picture of my new hair on Thursday!

It's when you (usually) regularly trim off tiny amounts of hair. So say for example you take off 2 inches, and make a nice soft U shaped hem, if you were to maintain the hem and length you would take off around quarter of an inch a month in microtrimming. That would be a tiny (micro!) amount and would allow for hem thickening, and, hopefully, a bit of growth too. I'm not sure what the exact boundaries are, but I usually think of a micro trim as being less than half an inch. I'm sure someone else will pop up and explain this better than me :)

If you scroll down to 'trimming', this article explains microtrimming and how it works.

if anything, start with a trim and see if you like it any better, then consider a "cut"...easy to take off more, not so easy to put it back (did that make sense?)
like others said, a u-hemline should work it out nicely for you

I'd cut to where your green shirt meets your jeans. Maybe an U cut. It'd look great. Your hair is really beautiful, it's just the ends that look dry to me. So I'd cut them off. But the rest is amazing, I love your hair, especially the color. And the fact it's straight!

I'd go for a v that way you can keep growing.

It's totally personal preference but I'd cut back to hip length (about 4") because I prefer thick hemlines. A gentle U shape would look great on you, I think. I'm not a big fan of V cuts, they just make the ends look thin for me. I love your hair color by the way! :D

I hope you don't cut it very much. You have such "princess-y" hair! Your hemline is very fairytale. Tiny microtrims to maintain where you are as you grow will make the hemline thicker without losing length. So, so pretty hair!

Thank you for your explaination of micro-trimming. I wasn't sure what it meant. So I think I will take at least two inches off at first so the hemline looks fuller. Thanks again for your help.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I am definitely sure that I want to cut off the ends (like two inches). I still debating between a blunt straight across cut or a U-shaped. I have a really good hairstylist that has never steered me wrong. If I say just a tiny trim that is what she does. So I am a little nervous by confident at the same time. Thanks everyone!!

Based on looking at the pictures, you could get a pretty thick hemline by trimming it up to just above the waist of your pants. I think you should only trim off what you are comfortable doing, somewhere between 2-4 inches would be my suggestion.

I would say cut 5-10 cm and go from there:) Maybe you need micro trims, maybe you don't. Go for a u-shaped hemline, I think a straight across blunt one would look too harsh.

I think if it were me I'd trim about 6" off and then micro trim as it regrows to thicken the ends up... Other then that the rest of your hair looks nice and healthy to me :).
