Hi :) Newbie here (first post).

I am an older woman (almost 62), who is growing her locks out again, after missing the versatility of styling options... and when short, my silver curls make me look like MY grandmother with a perm :bigtongue:

12 Years ago I had WL hair until a HD ruined my hair in coloring, and I had to cut 12+ in off

1 Year ago I started growing it out from CL; it is now SL with S/M/L layers.
I have had light trims at 2, 3, and 4 mos; the last trim was 4.5 mo ago and I have decided to grow the layers out (can't braid/thinner).

It seems my hair is in good condition...each visit they say I have no splits.

My hair is graying (silver/white) from front to back /under layers to top.
The silver is a different/finer texture than my dark blonde (and soft).
In dry air my hair is sleek with a slight wave; in humid air I look like I have a perm ;)

Now for my questions:
1) How often/how much to trim the length when growing out length and layers.?

2) In growing out layers, do you trim them at all?

3) With wave/curl tendencies should you keep some longer layers? (I always had one length)

4) Re: hair with wave/curl tendencies.... is it best to have a straight or *U* shaped hem (I have/always had *U*)

I am tempted to just stay away from a salon, and let it grow; obviously looking for the fastest growth options ;)
Over time stylists always seem to impose their views regardless of what is requested, so I don't have a regular :(

Thanks for any input offered; I look forward to getting to know you!

My mom used to have curly grey hair about waist length. She very Rarely trimmed, she did have layers at one point but she let it grow for a few years before she even began trimming, and then it was a blunt cut. But that worked for her because dad did it and she hates sylists/salons/barbers etc. I dont really know whats best for curlies because we so rarely pay attention to stuff like that when i was growing up. Hopefully someone here can help you in that regard. I know there is at least one grey haired tangent in this forum somewhere....

For the most part my hair is smooth, with a wave if I use a curling brush; it is the humidity puts it into curl mode lol
I'll check around for the thread you mentioned!
Thanks for your reply!

Do what you like; there are no hard and fast rules.

When I grew out my short layered haircut, my stylist always trimmed my layers just a bit less than she trimmed the length. I went from short layers to longer layers to long layers to no layers at bottom of shoulder-blade length over about 3 years. For now, I'm doing no layers because I want to grow as long as my hair will grow and I don't want the ends to be too thin. I might do layers again sometime in the future because they really play up my natural wave/curl.

Welcome and have fun.

Have you considered a Curly specialist haircut and styling? They often dry cut curl by curl so the end result isn't technically a straight or U shape, they would normally leave long layers if you needed them to prevent 'triangle head'. There are many before and afters on Facebook on Scott Musgrave and the Curly Girl Handbook pages. If you wished you could have wave/ curl all the time if you work with your dew points/ humidity and stop treating your hair as if it is straight (eg. stop brushing).

Having said all that there is no need to trim at all if you have no splits or breakage and you don't mind/ prefer 'fairytale ends'.

I like to do micro trim dustings on the bottom and let everything else just catch up. I take good care of it though. My silvers are making my hair wavy now and I just read The Curly Girl Handbook. The curly girl method is mentioned on the forum a lot but I still didn't know exactly what it was. Since my hair has always seemed straight I ignored it but now I am using the curly girl method and so happy with the results. There are also sections on cutting your own hair and a section for silvers. I think its a great book with lots of great hair advice that is given here on the forum whatever your hair type. I checked it out at the library.

Thank you all for your input......there is so much to consider..... and I'll see how my patience hangs in there as well ;)
I'll be sure to check out that book...it looks interesting; my hair can be so sleek in dry weather, and then be so curly in humid weather people think I got a perm! LOL

I think in general curly/wavy hair looks best with layers of some sort. You could try to S&D for a while and see what you want to do when it gets longer.

Hello Ladies :)
I'm back...after being away almost 2 years!
Life got crazy for me right after I joined, and a lot has changed since then!

For starters....all these questions have now all been answered LOL

I have been lurking during that time..... was very inspired, and have learned so much from all of you!

Now I trim my own hair (the layers are gone), I will reach my goal (solid waist dry) by Christmas, and have a lovely collection of hair toys and styling ideas that I 'play with' daily.

Thanks to Gumball for getting me back in; I had forgotten my password and changed my email.

I look forward to exchanging ideas with you as we start a new year ~ Happy growing!

Thanks, I think she's cute, lol. And I figured about two years to get to waist. I hope my hair will look good longer. It's been years since my hair was that long. I have quit obsessing as much but I can't wait for longer lengths.

I am late for my LHC anniversary ~ it has been 4+ years since joining and my QUESTIONS WERE ANSWERED ...with YOUR help :flowers:

I never posted progress pics (no help and a basic camera with no features) = no anniversary thread(s)
Plus I couldn't find my starting pic.
As posted on my profile page :

Each one of you have my deepest gratitude for your inspiration and support as I grew out
my fine, silvering, Chin length layers (Jan 2013) to my 'lifetime goal' of one length/Hip (Spring 2016).
I am now keeping my hemline between waist and hip ~ my 'sweet spot' in the 1960's..and now in my 60's.
I have a short/shrinking torso and a high waist, so I reach landmarks fast but my hair is short for overall length.
Every day is a joy practicing the many skills learned here & using my beloved, humble, LHC inspired hair toy collection.
* Occasionally I will be offline to focus more on enjoying retirement with my beloved Hubby of 44+ years and family.
Life is passing by all too quickly and I want to make the most of what is left. ☮ & ♡

My Hair Care Routine:
- Rotate styles and hair toys daily
- Worn up: in Summer, when doing chores, and when wearing hats/hoods
- Self trim with Feyes & 'Under Chin' method combo
- Dust my racers on the full moons as needed
- Trim @ seasonal changes (quarterly) to maintain hemline between waist and hip
- Shampoo 1-2x/week - Clarify as needed -warm>cool scalp blow dry -air dry ends
- MOISTURE: joico moisture s&c - leave in condit/oil/serum damp ends -Biosilk Lite Serum for humidity frizz & winter dryness - Rosewater & glycerin spritzes to refresh summer wurls and tame wispies all year
- BBB daily in winter to combat dryness with the little natural oils I have
- Shea Moisture Peace Rose Oil Hair Mist/Garnier texture cream/hairspray) for texture/control
- Terry cloth turban-Satin pillow case-wood bristle brush & comb-vented wet brush detangler
* I do ROAK with unused hair toys & my collection will be donated to LHC when I pass for RAOK

I did a date search for you and this site on bing.com (my search engine), starting with your registration date. I progressed forward one day until I got a hit.

I research my family tree for a hobby and I've had to use different names with the people I'm looking for to narrow down things like obituaries, marriages, death dates and the like. :o

Congratulations on your hair-versary Groovy Granny! I think it's very great that you decided to grow out your hair and go against the common standard, that at a certain age long hair is not done. Which ofcourse is not true! In many cultures all over the world there are a lot of older women who keep their hair long until the end!
Your hair looks great in your profile pic, can't access the album unfortunately but from what I've read, you've come a long way! :happydance:
