I thought it would be fun to show off photos of our hair at it's very best. Feel free to share some hair history as well.

I'll go first :D

This is from 2010. This is my hair cut into long layers, straightened just enough to smooth out any waves (I was pretty consistent at using heat "protector" at that time). It's never been colored or highlighted.

This is when I first started really growing it out. I would straighten it to oblivion but I love the smooth texture and how it wouldn't tangle as much.

Looking back at pictures makes me question why I don't use heat anymore. Does anyone have a miracle product for wavy hair that gets matted at the nape of your neck?

This was a couple years ago but it still is my favorite picture of my hair. It was during cosmetology school and I used sulfates, cones, and a blow dryer but I held out and never highlighted, cut short, teased, or dyed my hair. I was the only one in class that didn't since we could have anything done for free. I only trimmed twice and got nicknamed Hippie  was growing from a shoulder length when straight cut, still am growing now!

This is my hair from May this year, I've cut it back since then. It finally looked long and healthier than it has in over 20 years

My hair at its best. Ignore the weird posture, I was moving (and my had was also tilted back as a result):

It was about a year ago. Since then, a lot of things have changed and I no longer have that hair -- not even close.

This is one of my favorites. They may not look very healthy, but they definitely look long. It's a picture from the autumn about 3-4 years ago. I miss that lenght so much....

Aesthetically speaking, this probably isn't the 'best' my hair can look. There are times when it's looked much shinier, or less frizzy, but this picture was the first that sprung to mind when I saw this thread. I think it's because this is my hair 'in the wild' - on holiday with my family, dried in braid waves then just pinned back a little. It's a time when I was really just enjoying my hair - and for some reason, everyone I've shown this picture too comments on it. I'm also really proud at how long it's getting - it's not been past BSL since I was younger.

This was mine at the length I am trying to get back to. I keep layering my hair and chopping it :(. From the advice of a friend, I have been trying to frequent the long hair boards more, so I will get motivated to grow it long instead of keep chopping it!! http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd88/jen5972/NewSiggy2.jpg (http://s227.photobucket.com/user/jen5972/media/NewSiggy2.jpg.html)

You and I seem to have a similar hair texture, which looks gorgeous when it's straight and smooth. I chopped my hair into a bob a few months back and now I'm regrowing. I cut out all heat for the last two months (to help preserve length). I used to use it daily (for drying and styling). I have no clue what I'll do once I reach APL or longer. I would like to stay heat free, but the only thing I can think of doing with it once I reach APL is braids, buns and the messy look.

I strongly believe that my best is yet to come. ;) But this is what my hair looks like now and I am loving it (except for that tapering, super curly end)

It has been almost a year since I joined LHC and I definitely see great improvements in my hair, esp in its texture and quality. I no longer hate my wavy/curly hair and try to straighten it with heat or chemicals. I have learned to embrace it and my hair loves me back. :)

This is actually one of my senior pictures (from 2010), and although I don't think it's like THE BEST representation of my hair, I still love the way it falls in this photo, and it was probably approaching the longer end of the spectrum for me. I am at about that point now, and plan to keep on going. Also, my ends are much less scraggly nowadays!

Sorry, an afterthought photo... This is a photo of my hair from last week. The braid is over my shoulder, so it doesn't show length, but I am in love with how happy and shiny it is. Also, not a bad French braid for me; I normally suck at them!

This is from last year, right after taking my hair out of rag curlers, before it had gotten mussed. Once the weather gets cooler I'll style it like this again, but it's still too hot to wear my hair down. I haven't worn my hair loose even once since sometime in May and I'm so tired of updos.

Maybe a bit unconventional for a longhair forum - but I loved my look back in 2010. I dyed my hair super dark brown, I discovered the curling iron and I really liked how the fringe framed my face and how much magic I could do with a curling iron :)
I lost some weight since then and my face changed a little but I still like my hair the way it was then, it was really flattering cut. I think that after some time I'll try framing my face better with my now longer hair. I hope you don't mind me bombarding the thread with short-haired rather large pictures :o

I'm not inertia, but I have done rag curls according to the victorian methodology. It's relatively hair friendly but you do have to work with (comb, smooth, wrap) damp hair and it's pretty manipulation heavy... so not super hair-safe.

Howto: wash hair. Get hair untangled and about halfway dry (needs to be at least partially wet). Section hair into probably twelve sections (central part, then part on each quarter, for 4 sections of hair from nape to forehead, then do 3 across from ear to ear) and restrain all but 1 section with clippies to keep them out of the way. On the working section, get a very long piece of soft cloth material (I use t-shirt strips, about 2" or 3" wide and 2x long as my hair plus about 8" extra. T-shirt material naturally curls into a tube when it's cut so it works well for this, plus it's cheap and also soft.) and hold it 4" from one end. Where you are holding the piece of material, put it right up on the top of the hair section and hold it there (or clip it in place or string the 4" tail over your head and bite it in your mouth. Whatever. It is important that you (a) leave the 4" tail of material at the top and (b) don't let it move after you start). Then, take your working piece of hair, make it flat and smooth as for "putting on a hair roller" and CAREFULLY SPIRAL WRAP IT AROUND THE STRIP OF MATERIAL. You are carefully spiralling the hair round and round (keeping the layer flat and smooth) the strip of material until you have no hair left. It is NOT like a roller, where the hair keeps going overtop of itself. It is a spiral wrap, where the hair does not lay on top of itself but advances down the strip of material with no overlap. While wrapping, recomb if you need to keep things flat and smooth. Once you have the HAIR wrapped AROUND THE MATERIAL all the way down, including the ends, then you take the hanging end of the material (there should be a lot left over at the bottom, below where your hair is wrapped) and carefully wrap it back up AROUND YOUR WRAPPED HAIR, smoothly and carefully, all the way up to the top of the working strand, whereupon you take the bit left in your hand and tie it to the 4" tail that you allowed at the start. This knot keeps things in place overnight. (That's right, this is an overnight hairstyle. It is in no way fast.) Repeat with all the other pieces of hair and strips of material.

When you're done, you will have what look like 'locs except made out of t-shirt material. If necessary, bundle the wrapped hair things up so that they don't bother you (I have not found this to be a problem because tshirt material is soft and doesn't bother me) and then go to sleep and don't mess with this for at least twelve hours.

The next morning, carefully untie the knot and unwrap the strips of material (DO NOT try to pull it off. I know you are excited and stuff, but take your time and do it right.) and then carefully unwrap the coils of hair (my hair is slippery enough that usually when I have unwrapped the material off the outside, the inner strip sort of pulls out) and, if desired, gently pick the spiral curls into a style that suits you. BE CAREFUL, because the volume and tangling potential is pretty impressive if you get out a bristle brush or something. (This is also why you use fairly wide strips of material -- to make the spiral curls large enough to be workable. If you use super-skinny strips of material, your curls will be very tight and, if you're like me and have straight hair, things can go very wrong from there on out because you may not have a lot of experience working with curls. In case of disaster, carefully dampen hair with oil and, starting from the bottom, comb it straight. Seriously, use restraint when fluffing the spirals.)

The spiral curls last a full twelve hours in my dead-straight fine hair. They go *boing* if I tug on them. And they do not involve heat (damaging) or chemicals (damaging). There is some minor mechanical damage, but if you are careful, it is minimal.

Here's a Youtube video of the process, she does fewer tails and uses product, but I do more sections and skip the product: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kdisIQ94CGE

Also, if you have very long hair, you don't have to do the full length if you just want boing-y curls for the back of an updo or something. You can just do the length you need.

For that picture, I used the "bandana waves" technique on Rapunzel's Resource:
http://rapunzelsresource.wordpress.com/2009/09/24/bandana-waves/
It gives a soft, romantic look, and although the rollers have to sit overnight, putting them in is quite fast (5~10 minutes?) because it requires fewer sections than many other techniques. I only used 4 sections.

This is probably my favorite pic of my hair, even though it doesn't really show the length. From a photo shoot three years ago at the beach. Mmm beach hair.

One of my most recent shots from June 2013. This was before I followed my husband's suggestion to wash every other day and only use coconut oil (stop using conditioners). I think it looked better then..
https://photos-a-iad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/992968_528746687181584_1375848966_n.jpg

And this was taken this morning, after wetting and oiling it. Just took it out of a braid, and cut off 3" a few days ago..
https://fbcdn-sphotos-d-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn2/981575_569043353151917_591589649_o.jpg

The ends are thicker than they were before. Just looks bad b/c still damp (and oily).. I think I'm at least going to wash every day if I'm oiling so much. My scalp can't tolerate less.. it itches. :disco:

Wow Nightshade, that fork in the first picture is gorgeous. The top practically glows like there's a light inside it.

Nobeltonya, I agree that the first picture looks better.

After cutting from just past Classic to just barely TBL (at least 7-8"), and adjusting to this new routine of only coconut oil instead of conditioner, still shampooing every day (have to..), my hair is finally looking nice again! :D. My braids are nice and thick all the way down now. :disco:

I just posted this picture in another thread, but I wanted to share it in here as well. Shiny hair and nice looking curls, even though I must say that my hair is a bit more frizzy in real life - it doesn't really show in this picture, but that's fine with me :D haha.

http://img62.imageshack.us/img62/6288/za2p.jpg This is pre-LHC, when I was leaving in regular conditioner and gel. I was sitting in my chair for a long time watching tv after having washed my hair, and it dried into these perfect 1930s waves. I've never seen it do that since. I suspect the lack of frizz has to do with the fact that it was fall or winter.

Many have appreciated this colour on my hair (myself included!):

Since then (31 Dec 2010) I have been growing out my natural hair colour, so here's a more recent shot, with virgin colour to below the shoulder:

This was two weeks after the third (and final, so far; I finally got it right) time I tried using BS/ACV exclusively. My hair loved it. It's not so great now, but only because I hadn't done a deep conditioning in months.

You gotta upload the picture to a host source on the internet. I use photobucket.com. From there you can copy and paste the image url between those [img] brackets.

This is from last year, right after taking my hair out of rag curlers, before it had gotten mussed. Once the weather gets cooler I'll style it like this again, but it's still too hot to wear my hair down. I haven't worn my hair loose even once since sometime in May and I'm so tired of updos.

I know the feeling! I remember it was an awful time trying to grow it back out, but there was so much damage there that I had to, and well, by that time I'd had enough of "messing with my hair" that I just plain left it alone from then on. Benign neglect rules! :D
