View Full Version : Need a cut

I've decided I can't do it...I can't just let the henna grow out. It's really affecting my self esteem. I would rather have shorter hair of all the same colour then two tone BSL hair.

I have probably 4-5 inches of natural hair, but the top seems to have grown slower than the back/underneath part. The back I have natural hair past shoulder length, but the top I only have it down to my ears maybe at most. Here is a really bad photo I just took (bad lighting at work). Almost all of the henna fits in the bun now:

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s183/ZekwinFallout/a91fc02e-25e2-408c-bfec-802d40cc39e5_zps67b1e023.jpg

I was thinking just a shorter version of this haircut (this was me 3 years ago):

http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s183/ZekwinFallout/18365_375579320634_757705634_10132457_1436995_n-2.jpg

I know I do not look good with pixie or any of those bobs with the shorter at the back, longer at the front. Chin length is the shortest I want with maybe a few layers on top to get rid of the remaining henna? Then some side swept bangs?

Maybe something like this?

My only worries are these:

1) My hair is super thin and fine, and now that I've cut out heat, how will these shorter cuts with layers work? I've always blow dried them before.

2) Would keeping my hair long be better with baby on the way? I forget the care for shorter hair and now with my no-heat, no hair tie rule, maybe just living with the red for a bit longer might be better?

Hi there,
Maybe you don't have to go that short, maybe you can cut some of the length and leave some henna at the ends so it would look like the deep dye ends that are so popular now. Perhaps you can start with a few inches and see how do you like it? ...

Good luck with the decision... :) Sorry I can't offer more advice. ...

Cheers :)

You've held on for so long already. Surely you can hold on just a little while longer. That way your hair won't have to be cut so short. It's normal for the underlayer to grow out more. It grows out layered instead of blunt.

You know, when I experimented with BS/ACV, my color got lighter and lighter. I always thought if I ever needed a bad color job to disappear, I would try. I was just thinking, since you're going to cut it off anyways, you might try. But please don't blame me:/ if it somehow gets worse.
Your natural hair color is similar to mine:) glad to say it's so pretty:)

Can you braid ribbon into it? That is a style that makes an asset of multiple-colored hair.

There's nothing wrong with shorter hair, either. I had my hair cut quite short after each of my 2 babies because it was so much easier. (I am not one of those people who finds long hair the easiest thing ever. I reserve that opinion for the pixie - wash and wear easy.)

I already cut from BSL to APL in June and it's grown quite a bit since then (pregnancy related maybe? All the rest of the hair on my body is out of control as well so maybe that's why?). I'm not sure if I would like it shorter if there was still henna, as I wouldn't be able to pull it back as easy.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm all, if I can make it to maternity leave then I won't care. But I think I'm self-conscious because more people are looking at me and my belly now and I just feel awkward with the hair...I don't like being the centre of attention at all but with baby belly it's hard not to be noticed more.

Thanks. I've never tried BS/ACV. I've been nervous to consider it as it seems like more work. I shower daily in the mornings so it seems like it would be too hard to do all the time. Might be something to try on weekends though. It won't fade completely though...it's stuck on there.

I'm not sure how to braid ribbon into it. I'm hair style challenged. I can do a bit of a bump on the front and a simple bun but that's it. Braids are hopeless on me, but that's mostly because my hands fall asleep before I get very far. I would love to do french braids or other styles but I just end up crying whenever I try to figure them out. Cutting short though might not work without heat styling on me, as I know my hair can be wonky when short as well. I don't think I could go pixie though, I think that would look weird on me.

How would you feel cutting out the henna in your bangs and wearing the face framing layers out of your updo? That way you can have virgin hair surrounding your face.

If this is possible, it sounds like it could be a good idea. If you do chop though I would say to most definitely keep the length below the chin.
I agree with lapushka but completely understand where you are coming from :) if your color is making you feel weird then there is no real avoiding that (because you're done dyeing) and you should do what is going to make you feel most confident. I hate attention drawn to me and I'm super self conscious about my different hair colors Ive had if they aren't spot on super awesome, so I get that feeling too.

If its impacting your self-esteem you should do what you want to feel better. Your natural is gorgeous and I'm sure that whatever you decide will turn out well on you!

:( I'm actually sad you want to cut it. Understand why, but I really like your contrast. You have done such a good job so far, when the baby comes you wont have time to worry about two coloured hair. Maybe concentrate on something else for now to take your mind off?

But IF you do hate it that much, I do like the link you've posted. Its a trendy cut and you'll just be able to start fresh with all virgin hair :)

I feel you on the two toned hair thing, I couldn't deal with it either and cut to pixie.
On the heat thing, I've found that even when it was too short to put up properly, pinning the layers up while they were damp and leaving them to dry would keep them under control when I unpinned them, could be worth a try.
Good luck whatever you decide.

If you are at least a 2a have you considered having a curly specialist cut that will work with your waves instead of fighting them with a blow fryer? Hydrolysed protein is good for boosting wave and giving body/ volume to fine or thin hair, waves also help with volume. If you just left a few inches of henna it might look like a deliberate dip dye. Short hair can always be held off the face with headbands, hard ones covered in satin ribbon, soft silk ones, nothing damaging and easy to pop on.

Baking soda is damaging to both skin and hair, I suspect it would destroy yours fine/ thin hair. If you are willing to go the alkaline route try a peroxide free colour remover like Color Oops.

I was going to suggest you try coloour oops, or similar as well. I realise many people don't like chemically stuff during pregnancy, but as you've grown out so far, it needn't touch your skin at all, and if you could stay outside while it did its thing, you wouldn't breathe in too much of the stink either.

Check out the henna removal thread for TONS of info on the product, and how others have sucessfully used it with henna. If youre considering shipping it off anyway, it can't hurt to try it :)

That's a good idea actually. Thanks! I hadn't thought of that. That would save me doing the "bump" and I think seeing the ends of just blonde hair might boost my confidence a bit more even with it tied back. Here is me with side-swept bangs from...no idea when...maybe 5 years ago? 6 years ago maybe? This might have been an engagement dinner with my family after DH and I got engaged....(sorry, the pic is big. I tried to re-size in photobucket but it's being a butt right now):

You are the hairdressing expert! I think above chin or anything rounded around my face though looks off. It just doesn't match my features. Maybe I will go with the side swept bangs and just tie it back for now until it's long enough for all chin length.

I hadn't considered that. I'm not sure where I would find a place that is experienced in that though. I would have to investigate.

Already done the colour opps route. The henna was going pink (see my siggy pic) on my light hair instead of burgundy which is sort of why I stopped, so that removed most of the pinky colour. It's just copper now but I couldn't get it to go any lighter.

So, in all (in case you didn't want to read all the back and forth above) I'm glad I posted as I think doing just the bangs will work for me better right now. I'll post pics when I get it done (may not be for a week or two).

Not everyone has used Color Oops as a removal. Nightshade successfully used Sun-in to lighten her henna.
If you are thinking of cutting it out anyway, it can't hurt to try.

Already tried that as well. Because my hair underneath is already white blonde the sun-in did nothing really. I got maybe a shade lighter, but it won't make it go back to blonde.

You look pretty in that picture :) Blond suits you very much. Let us know how the cut goes. I feel like you'll hack more of the henna off on your length once you start :p
