About 2 months ago I decided I wanted to change my hair colour, I haven't had a base colour on my hair since 2005, I've only ever had blonde highlights redone every year, I'd just had a baby as well and I just fancied a change, new chapter in my life and that and my dark hair was making me feel a bit washed out. Anyway I showed this picture to the hairdresser

its obvious from the picture I wanted to go lighter but instead the hairdresser did it jet black which made me look like a witch and so washed out lol! and my blonde highlights were gone so next day I went in and they stripped my hair which made it red and then they put another colour on and they put back my blonde highlights which I love and am never parting with again and this was the result

For a few weeks I was happy with it but now I think its faded and its gone a ginger brassy colour, it looks worse in real life and if you look closely a hint of red can sneak through it, so this is how its gone

Now all I want is to go back to my natural colour as close as possible, this has been the biggest mistake of my life without sounding so dramatic but I just feel like I cant go out the house because its so orange when in daylight, I'm one of those people that take so much pride in there appearance and get anxious if anything is wrong and this is definitely causing me anxiety (I know it all sounds silly) and when I am out I just cant wait to get home, I've lost so much confidence and its getting me so down and depressed, I've been looking on the net for ways to get it out but obviously the only way is to grow it out and using colour remover would just make it go lighter which is not what I want and I don't want to cut it all off because I love the length and I've read about "tint back"? I had my hair trimmed 2 weeks ago and she said it was in very good condition and my hair texture is thick just thought I'd mention that lol! so anyway I've finally booked a hair appointment for next week so what do I ask the hairdresser?, I'm just scared what happened last time is going to happen again, I've booked it with a different one and one that specialises in colour, as I said I want to go back to as close to my natural colour as possible but do I ask for a warm brown or an ash brown? Should I show her pictures of my natural colour? I just want something I can grow out, forget about, not notice it and not worry about roots and that. I have about an inch and half of root showing already so could the hairdresser get my natural colour off that and match it up? I don't want any orange or red tones as I know brown hair colours do, I just want something natural and to feel like myself again anyway this is my natural colour, sorry for so many pictures of myself, I know there horrible but I just wanted to show you my hair in different lights. lol!

A blue toner will suppress the orange which is a combination of red and yellow and an ash toner will go after just the red. We all see color a little differently so just to be sure everyone is on the same page, sometimes it is a good idea to put the piece in hand that you don't like, identify the color, and where you want to take it.

Personally I like the third picture better than the first but I think that has to do with condition more than color. When I look at the first pic I see poorly conditioned hair that is dull, almost blah. Your hair in the third link has a lot of shine and dimension. It looks more interesting to me.

I'd say that since you don't want any red/orange, you want to ask for an Ash Brown. If you get reddish tones coming through later, you can always do a weak gloss with a blue Manic Panic color to tone it down. There's a whole thread on here where LHC'ers are doing this to tone down warmish hair colors. Best wishes. ;)

So instead of having a colour have a toner? but don't they wash out after a few washes and i'll still have the problem with the roots. The third colour of my natural colour? I think the condition was down to being pregnant at that time and I now realise and prefer my hair being a bit lifeless and dull its more natural, the blonde highlights give it interest its personal preference.

I have no advice but just wanted to say that even though you don't like the color it is now, it's really lovely! So don't fret too much. :)

It's good that you've booked with a colorist. Bring in the picture of your natural color and have a consultation and be specific. See what she has to say and there's no need to commit.

Any dye will fade if you have porous hair that has been damaged by multiple permanent chemical processes. The only way to avoid further damage is to use a high pigment semi permanent colour - the longer you leave it the longer lasting but darker the colour - if you choose a colour lighter than you want you can avoid going too dark. Always do strand tests on shed plughole hair instead of using your head as a laboratory.

Do understand that damaged hair needs different treatment to healthy virgin hair because it is much more vulnerable. Religiously protect from sunlight, avoid heat and mechanical damage, use a super gentle cleansing method and cool water. Proven beneficial ingredients include coconut oil, hydrolysed protein, ceramides, 18-MEA and panthenol.

So should I ask her to put a semi one on instead of a permanent? and should I ask her to do strand tests before I commit to anything. I just want something I can leave and not go back and fourth to the hairdressers every 5 mins which is happening at the moment and plus I want something that's money saving. Mind you anything would turn out better than it is now lol!

definitely ask for a semi colour, and be fussy, remember last time you ended up with black hair! Personally I don't trust hair dressers to do my hair anymore (bad bad bleach balding $500 experience!) If you are determined to go to the hair dressers, ask her for a semi in the colour 6.1 or 6A (depending on what brand they use - this is Dark ash blonde - but it will turn out brown). It will help get rid of the red and I think it will be a pretty good match to your natural colour. You have a cool complexion so red really isn't your friend. Good luck and remember if you feel iffy about anything the hair dresser says or you feel she is not listening to you - LEAVE
