* edit * I should clarify, the version that looks like an actual nautilus shelf from the side view

Hi guys!

So, I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong? My hair is between waist and hip length now with a slight wave and medium/thick thickness. I've gotten the cinnabun, lazy wrap, figure eight, infiniti, pha, gebralter, and L bun, but for some reason, every time I try the nautilus I am met with failure.

I've watched many youtube tutorials on different methods, and it feels like I just run out of hair. Not sure if my hair is too thick (it took until just shy of waist for the lazy wrap) but I feel like others with my thickness or more have gotten the nautilus to work. Whatever I do it always falls and becomes a disaster. It's not a matter of adding two sticks because the failure occurs well before a bun is formed to hold by a stick. I think in the pulling it through phase something goes awry.

Do you have any tutorials or suggestions? Thank you!

Nautilus shelf? Oh, you mean shell. Well, this is the nautilus bun as I know it:

It doesn't look anything like a nautilus shell from the side, so I don't know what bun you're wanting. Maybe I'm being dense. Can you link to a picture or video of the bun you mean? :)

This is the best you tube video for it (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b86ZH0J7xtE). IDK what bun you want though, I've never seen it to look like a shell.

I also had trouble doing the Nautilus until I found Habioku's tutorial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5gTy1gCyqE

Then it all became clear. She doesn't do that 'loop' that was driving me crazy. Her website is full of amazing info and tutorials.
Her tutorial of self-trimming is the best, for me. It's what finally gave me the courage to try it myself. It's been a year now since I paid my last visit to a salon!
Habioku simply rocks.

That's pretty much how I do my "Lazy wrap"...maybe I'm really doing a nautilus? :hmm:

I don't wear it much, disk bun is my go to because it's more secure and looks better.

This is how I make a nautilus. If the link doesn't work, search "nautilus bun aynotjar" on youtube. The main thing that took me a while to get right was how tight to make the loop.. you have to keep it kind of tight or it'll fall apart. Hope it helps! :) :disco:

And as long as you have enough hair to make it loop at least once (probably about waist) it should work.

Last I checked, a nautilus bun was topologically the same as a lazy wrap. The major difference is that the nautilus tends to have the length twisted, which causes it to hold better for me, anyway. The Inside-out bun fits in that family, too.

Oh man, the "nothing at all to secure it" bun! I have a ways to go before I can achieve THAT!

I love your tattoo!!

I finally "got it" after torrin paige's tutorial on you tube. It's my "nothing to hold it up" go to bun. Usually holds very well, all day, unless I have super clean slippery hair. I don't know what a nautilus shelf is though.

i was wondering if anyone has any tips re. securing. there is one bun i can do which is always secure (don't know the name..) but other than that it is always hit and miss. for instance with this bun, i followed the youtube video and did it several times and it was always find until the stick bit and then it just fell apart. is there a good rule of thumb generally for getting the sticks in very securely? i know it needs to go under the hair but what are your specific techniques? also regarding the exit of the stick, i generally smoodge the other end through other side of the bun by getting my other hand involved but not sure this is the best way. :-)

I have been struggling with getting the nautilus bun to stay, but today is the day.. I finally got it!! :joy: I am right handed and keep trying to use my right hand, so the loop you pull over the rest would always be on the bottom and it just wasn't working. I decided to try to use my left hand and now the loop bit is on the top and it actually stays! So I highly suggest if you are struggling with any bun try switching hands. It might feel abnormal at first but after practice I think it will get easier. I can now secure my nautilus bun with one stick and it stays put all day.

Good tip! I can't do one yet due to length, and I want to use my full hand, not just a few fingers on the loop (don't want it to be too constricting).

Congratulations!

I can't do a nautilus yet but I think it's because my hair is too thick and short at the moment.

Good advice. I got this one to stay on its own without a pin first try maybe a week ago after watching some video "ten second bun on long hair with no pins" or something. And I must have gotten lucky with the handedness and direction. But I was thinking of switching the direction, so this is important to keep in mind as I experiment.

I can do a nautilus with the whole hand, but with my think hair the bun is just too loose. I will work with a three or four prong fork.

itīs difficult to make such a nautilus without any hairtoys on fine hair. especially if itīs still like freshly washed. I can do the nautilus without hairtoys on the 5th day after washing. only wearing it at home when I donīt do much stuff... like reading, watching tv, cooking, working on the pc. when I am outside I either insert a beak clip (stick, if you want or have one) or put a scrunchie on it.
