At the request of others, I'm starting this thread! Here's where you can list the things your hair has destroyed.
I'll start:
At least 3 vacuum cleaners over my lifetime, one in the last year
More elastics and claw clips than I can count
Several barrettes
Magic pins - instant death to them. They snap right away
Bobby pins
Several pencils and pens
At least 1 hair dryer (no longer use those!)
A bunch of combs
Several hair brushes
A seam ripper (trying to cut the hair out of the vacuum)
My hair isn't even thick or unruly. It's just a lot of fine, slippery wavy hair.

I've killed more than a few elastics and claw clips--these without especially long hair, mine is just so thick. My parents also did a fair amount of cleaning hair out of the vacuum up until age 7 or so due to my waist-length hairs getting tangled up in it.

The Drain!
Elastics and clips are imperative, as well as a comb.

I have killed many vacuums as well as every drain I even look at. My hair also really likes to eat bobby pins.

I've killed a few elastics and I've clogged up the drain. . .
Apparently my hair is mild mannered!

Claw clips, my hair gets to be too much for them at about this length. Elastics, drains clogged yes out right broken no. Bobby pins get spat out and lost or bent out into u pins (which I still use). At least one pencil, a few baretts, at least one banana clip, headbands and that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Oh and almost my neck a cople of times, scooting back on the bed without thinking while laying down getting my hair caught between bed and back. Not super fun. Not something I do anymore now that I know how bad friction can be for hair.

--a few brushes (handles snapped right off)
--plastic headbands galore
--claw clips
--a curling iron (because I was 10 ad threw it at the wall in frustration)
--plastic U-pins
--countless elastics
I'm waiting for one of you to say something like "my brother's arm"--some kind of accident where your hair caused someone to fall or something.

My hair has so far destroyed several claw-clips and 2 hair-sticks (the cheap plastic kind), of which I'm strangely proud O.O
When I was a child, my hair destroyed at least one hairdryer (one that I clearly remember that is, never asked my parents if there were more)...
And our vacuum cleaner is in the witness protection program, due to the death threats in it's direction made by my hair ;)

Magic pins. I thought I was being very gentle but every single one of them breaks. Not a few, but every single one.

My mom's vacumm, my friends vacuum, a few hair sticks (I now only buy diamond wood ones), hair elastics, some Amish pins as they get spit out, and my poor puppies snouts. Lol they have each had their noses attacked but the end of my braid.

I forgot I broke a hair chopstick once too. In my defense, they were the thin flimsy ones that Walmart and the like usually carry--it couldn't handle the thickness of the bun I was trying to make. Oops...

Two combs
Several claw clips throughout my life, at least 30
Many Little butterfly clips as a child
Lots and lots of hair ties
Anything plastic really. If it has a spring I'm positive that it will break

Haha, if you all would cut the hair off the rollers regularly, your vacuums would live longer.
From the sound of it people do clean their rollers. Vrindi killed a seam ripper trying to clean a roller for instance. I think the only reason my rollers have been spared is because my floors are wood, tile and linoleum so the rollers only get used on the area rugs and are thus exposed to less hair and can go longer between remembering to clean them.

It broke my newest hair stick the day before yesterday. Weird - when I bought the stick, I thought it was wooden, though some kind of light-weight, cheap, painted wood. But turns out it's plastic.

My hair has viciously murdered two vacuums in the last five years. It has snapped all sorts of plastic hair sticks/forks/pins/clips, and warped quite a few metal ones out of shape as well. It is a regular ole' drain-clogger of epic proportions. In addition, my sons are convinced it is trying to murder them, or at least cut off circulation by wrapping around various body parts of theirs while they sleep. This baffles me as a) I never go in their room, so how does my hair migrate there and b) we do all our laundry separately, so how does it get tangled in their clothing and c) I keep it braided up or up 95% of the time so how is it getting loose ANYWAY!? It's my super-power, I tell you!

The drains.
The wire traps you put in drains to catch hair. (they constantly get holes in them from being cleaned out so that the water goes down the drain--and actually, the drain in the bathroom where I wash my hair is STILL always clogged).
Blowdryer attachments. Including one the last time I went to the hairdresser. The thing had no teeth after she finished. In front of the whole salon--I was so embarrassed.
Endless combs, when I was a kid and also brushes. I think my mom used to break at least a comb a week.
I don't vacuum before sweeping first to get the hair out of the carpet--and I've broken the broom.
Lets not even discuss hair elastics and barrettes. I just look at these. I don't buy them unless their brand name is Ficcare or Flexi 8.
I haven't broken any hair sticks yet but just started using them like 2 weeks ago.
Clawclips, forget it. I don't bother anymore. If they last two weeks that's great.
I haven't broken pencils in my hair, but pencils have disappeared in my hair and shown up when I'm detangling washing. I forgot they were there.
Bobby pins do not stand a chance.
I can use the Amish pins with the crinkles but the smooth ones shoot out of my hair.
And my hair has never been longer than brastrap before. It's all the thickness and the curls.
Are we allowed to mention how much conditioner my hair swallows? I can get rid of a bottle in a couple of weeks--and I only wash my hair every five days at most.
My hair hasn't actually killed hairdressers, but they act as if its going to. The last time I went to the hairdresser and got flatironed, it took 2 of them, 2 flatirons and an hour, panting and gasping the whole time as if they were running a race. This hair dresser knows me and was prepared. I've been to others who have thrown down their tools in the middle of fixing my hair and declared it impossible, and either demanding more money or insist that I had to get a haircut and/or hair thinned out if I ever wanted them to touch my hair again. The exact same women who were smiling when I came in and saying how they would love to do my 'pretty hair'--before they started the job. Me and my mom both used to cry when she combed it as a child. Since LHC she has been saying how gorgeous it looks, and last I went to visit wanted to go down memory lane by plaiting it for me. And it defeated her yet again. It was just a short while before she was saying--"How do you deal with this? It looked so easy when you were braiding it--its just SO MUCH HAIR. You finish it."
Oh, well.

Anything that's a hard plastic. That's not even from long hair.
Dymondwood or any laminated type - my sociopathic hair packs together too nicely, so it splits any lamination. Try to loosen my hair, it just falls out.
Between having longhaired dogs and me, any vacuum prior to my Dyson. It's not the roller bar, it's the extremely fine hair would jack up both the filter system and motor. Dyson doesn't seem to be so grumpy at least. But it prefers the roller cleaned after every use thanks to more hair in this house.
A farm of elastics, I pop the weld.
Jewelry fronts. My nape piercing only gets basic fronts as my hair tangles around the seam and has popped the front off more than a few times.
A zip strip.

My hair loves getting stuck in the drain, I have to pour drain cleaner down it every couple of months. I eventually just got one of those drain hair catchers because hubby got tired of finding hair in the drain
My hair has destroyed more pony elastics than I can even count. I got very good at tying them back together :p

Combs.
Brushes. (its why I stick to the TT, no handle to break off)
several hair sticks
pencils
color pencils
pens
hair ties
one barrette (I don't wear them often)
I've almost killed my vac a few times, but I can bring it back from the dead fairly easily.

I guess I just have the usual suspects. Vacuums; hair dryers; ponytail holders of all shapes, sizes, and materials; claw clips; headbands; hairsticks; bobby pins; combs and brushes; most plastic hair implements; and so on. And of course blocked drains, though I've always been pretty good about collecting my hair as I wash it and rolling it into a little ball to throw away after I shower. It's also ripped a surround sound speaker off DBF's wall, knocked several things off tables and shelves, gotten stuck in doors and windows (including and automatic revolving door in one of the fanciest hotels I've ever been in), broken necklaces and earrings, ruined zippers, and tried to choke both DBF and me in our sleep.

The last vacuum I took in, the repair guy flat out said that it would be cheaper to replace the unit than to replace the motor. So, we are on #3. If this one goes, I am getting a shop vac, using that first to get the worst of the loose hairs up, and THEN using the regular vacuum.

i think your hair is longer than mine at this point, though.
We catch it fairly quick when it starts to smell like burning and I go cut it clean... but with my longhairdness and adding another long haired creature to the home (Sir Bearhtolomew Watson III), its on its last legs. I want a new one.

Some of my hairs are also really coarse, almost like sewing thread. I think that is what really does it. I never smelled any burning or anything, it just started getting louder and louder and not sucking anything up! :steam

I've killed every size, shape and brand of plastic accessories known to man, including cheap chopsticks. I have to treat those silicone hair ties as single use only... I haven't broken a brush of comb for years, thanks to my chunky wooden comb ;)
I've got one of those Henry Hoovers designed for pet hair; I've had it years and it deals with my shed hairs no problem. I highly recommend it for those who destroy hoovers! I used to have to buy a vacuum every year or so, but when I eventually coughed up and bought my current hoover, I've never regretted it.

1) Bathtub drain (AGAIN! :justy:)
2) Bobby pins
3) At least one vacuum cleaner (the other one is still alive but needed FREQUENT....I mean constant...maintenance. Finally my mom bought me one for my birthday that I-I mean my hair- haven't managed to harm yet.)
4) Claw clips- these have a definitely life expectancy when they're in my hands.
5) One acrylic hairstick- Though this one was a team effort it seems, I received it second hand and suspected something was wrong with it, after discussion with the maker of said hairstick we came to the conclusion that someone had exposed it to a high temperature somehow (left in car or put in dishwasher maybe?) at some point during it's life and damaged it.
6) One plastic comb...you know that scene in the Princess Diaries where the handle snaps off the brush in her hair? Yea, that totally happened to me.
ETA: BANANA CLIPS! Those things come apart right at the hinge.

Won't try banana clips, then. I was reading somewhere that they were good for thick hair.
I've noticed before that people tend to have a different definition of 'thick hair' than I do.
You know how expensive wigs are supposed to be made to look as if you are thick-haired?
I have some (halloween and costume parties) and everytime I put them on and touch them (brushing hair out of the way and so forth), I can't help noticing how much thinner than my hair they feel and that it doesn't feel right. Like, there's not enough hair there. It feels abnormal. The same when I comb or wash others' hair.
I don't mind having thick hair at all--its just the inconvenience factor. It's fun to read this thread and see that there are others with the exact same problems--I'm laughing out loud as I read.

I drive my husband nuts by regularly clogging up the drain, but apparently my hair has started affecting the dogs too. I hope this isn't too much information, but my husband saw my dog having trouble getting #2 out the other day... come to find out, she had swallowed enough of my hair from the floor to create a hair ball and plug her up! Ewwwww....... @_@

My hair has almost killed a vacuum cleaner (although we have many fuzzy children living with us as well who helped contribute). Back in the day, when I was a teen, I was blow-drying my hair with my mom's hair dryer and the dryer caught on fire. I only noticed when I started smelling smoke and burnt plastic! I have also been mildly electrocuted by a blow dryer.

- couple hair brushes (one incident was especially cool: that brush cracked while I was wildly ripped with it through my hair (that was 8 years ago, ok?) and one half of that brush flew couple meters across the room, the faces of my distant relatives who saw this, was priceless);
- few elastics;
- 4 hairsticks;
- several claw clips (I think about 3-4, not more);
- couple of barrettes, but both of it was so feeble, that I do not blame my hair for this "murders".

Lots of brushes/combs, claw clips, and plastic hairsticks.
My hair occasionally mangles a spin pin. Luckily they bend back into place so I can't really count them as kills.
Once my vacuum actually fought back and sucked up half my hair with a rolling non-motorized attachment.

This must be one of those instances where I'm supposed to be happy about my super fine, thin hair....lol. Because I have killed nothing! My hair builds up and we have to clean the drain in the shower every few months, and stray hairs get off me and latch onto my husband and "molest" him in the shower we he tries to pull them off, lol. But no killer hair here!

This made me laugh way too hard. With tears and everything.
My husband, when we were dating, used to think I just liked looking up at him when he had my arms around me. Eventually I informed him that he was pinning my hair and I simply had no choice.
I've also been stranded/stuck on the sofa because if I moved I would tear out my hair because I somehow ended up on top of it. Husband to the rescue.

my hair killed a good hair day pin yesterday. It was the first time I used them and I followed the directions carefully and was gentle but one of the three pins I put in my bun just popped completely in half.
Does anyone else use good hair day pins (from Sallys)? Should I just return the set? The idea of a non metal hair pin that I could use in wet hair was alluring.

All of the usual suspects, including it wrapping around my neck or the bf's neck at night. But perhaps the worst was when we were taking a shower and I was rinsing the conditioner out of my hair, swinging it side to side and it whipped up and poked him in the eye. His eye was bloodshot for three days.

Here goes nothing:
- several brushes
- two fine-toothed combs
- 8-ish claw clips, two of which were made specifically for longer hair
- two... wait, now it's three, vacuum cleaners
- bobby pins. Normally they last about four uses before I can't quite bend them back into shape again
- 3 hair chopsticks, all plastic. Wood seems to survive though.
- innumerable elastics.

Ugh, sooo many claw clips and hair elastics! Or, rather than breaking the elastic, it will detach the elastic inside, so then it's got a big segment of non-stretchy material.

When I had hair
Numerous elastic bands, a hair comb, barrette, scissors and a few other bits I can't remember.
One women on a bus followed me down the aisle to show me a clump of hair I'd left behind, I had to say to her it was quite normal for me to loose that amount. This was before I got the Alopecia.
When loosing it:
I blocked up a complete bathroom system with hair, flooded said bathroom to 6 inches deep of water and I was holiday so it was a shared hotel one. LOL!
After loosing it using a Hairdressers styling head
1 French comb
1 barrett
1 hair comb
Numerous squeegy band thingies.
For me now
I get through a lot of scarves, especially the thinner ones as tying knots seems to weaken the fabric fibres producing holes.
I've also got through a far few items for storing said scarves as I have to find something that is satisfactor for a lot of scarves and keeping them organised at the same time.

three sad sorry sculpy clay failure experiment sticks.
One fine tooth comb in the past two years because I never used them and it was broke in under five minutes of unwrapping.

Seeshami, i love your way of putting things.
I am cleaning out the drains today. And putting new traps in.
I am also sweeping the carpets prior to vacuuming to avoid killing the vacuum cleaner.
I'm glad to know there are so many others out there with killer hair.
I remember in college the first week being confronted and accused of not cleaning my hair out of the shared bathroom sink, and I WAS cleaning it.
I also remember a giant fight on a trip to Italy with friends while a young girl about my shed hair being all over the hotel room and being accused of being 'dirty' and of not cleaning up after myself.
I feel better about this now and so glad to have a husband who knows that I do clean up after myself, very obsessively, its just that MY HAIR IS OUT TO GET ME and this is what happens...
Maybe it's friends with the Naughty Mess and they are plotting together.
what is scariest is that its not even long yet, I don't mean not by LHC standards, but by anyone's standards. Also, its up and contained like 98% of the time, and yes, I don't wash it everyday and I use a shower cap...
Scary.

Tons of bobby pins (the little plastic bits fall right off the end), tons of hair elastics (they stretch out too much to use or just snap), and a BUNCH of combs (I break the teeth right off). Also a few big claw clips (once I had teeth go flying across the room...) and although I haven't "killed" it yet, I've clogged up my shower drain so many that I'm sure it won't be long now before it just gives right up.

Several skinny plastic headbands.

I don't shed a lot, so I don't clog up vacuums. But my hair destroys hair ties, three a week, bobbypins, I don't bother with them, chopsticks, pencils, pens, earrings, necklaces, two flat irons, one curling iron, lots of plastic clips, and one blow-dryer (funny story, it took so long to dry all of my hair that the dryer died completely, and our power went out.), etc. :horse:

my hair is a mass murderer
it has killed infinite numbers of claw clips,
all plastic anything always,
the occasional wooden stick
(forks seem to get the better of my hair though,
it has not murdered any of those yet),
many barrettes,
innumerable bobby pins...
miracle it is not in jail yet . . .

My hair seems to be a lot less murderous than most! AFAIK its kill list is just one plastic hair stick (I use wood and metal ones now) and the wheels on an office chair, which in the end stopped being able to turn because they were so tangled with hair.

from recent to longer ago:
This beautiful stick (https://www.etsy.com/de/listing/169362051/calla-lillie-hairstick-haarnadel-aus) at first trying
This fork (https://www.etsy.com/de/transaction/111319525) after monthes of wearing absolutely unexpectedly... was shortend by a friend and belongs now to another friend with less and shorter hair
Two of these sticks (https://www.etsy.com/de/transaction/75992940), which I had decorated myself
This fork (https://www.etsy.com/de/transaction/66723918), which I believe was one of the prettiest I ever owned, but simply to thinn...
Two of these forks (https://www.etsy.com/de/transaction/62114395), first one, then the other one was sent for that... and after my hair killed that I had it remade into a 3prong and... I gave that to someone else
This gorgeous fork (https://www.etsy.com/de/transaction/59305439)... after killing 3 burl forks, I decided to never ever buy burl hair toys again, no matter how beautiful
Two of my very first hair sticks (https://www.etsy.com/de/transaction/51975310) - and I lost the third one ;)

I've killed at least a dozen (maybe even more) claw clips, hairpins, elastics, countless brushes and combs, burnt out five hairdryers and two curling irons (when I used to use them), plastic and metal barettes, headbands (plastic, metal, and cloth), and one vacuum. Since my hair is coarse and thick, this doesn't surprise me in the least!

:( I am an unhappy camper!
A few years back I bought a vintage-looking comb at a flea market. It's unlikely it's really old but it is finished a lot nicer than those cheap ZENNER fake vintage combs, so I bought it and loved it.
Pics:
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu46/Marjokei/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140620_081507_zpsca53a9c2.jpg (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Marjokei/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140620_081507_zpsca53a9c2.jpg.html)
And a close up of the decorative scrolls. Nothing is colored outside the lines so to speak, and the tinesdon't snag, and it's just really nice!
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu46/Marjokei/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140620_081654_zps01b9b82f.jpg (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Marjokei/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140620_081654_zps01b9b82f.jpg.html)
...Anyway I had it in a French Twist yesterday, took it out when it started raining, and carefully put it in my bag. The bag went in my bicycle side bag, so it wouldn't get bumped and jostled into me during transportation.
And then this really stupid lady rode her bike straight into me because she didn't pay attention getting on her bike, and just rode from the sidewalk on to the bicycle lane without so much as looking around and knocked me off my bike! She even had the audacity to smile and say "oh, well my brakes don't work byeeeee" while I was on the ground and SHE JUST DIDN'T LOOK AT ALL WHERE SHE WAS GOING.
And when I came home I found this:
http://i632.photobucket.com/albums/uu46/Marjokei/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140620_081758_zps91eb97e6.jpg (http://s632.photobucket.com/user/Marjokei/media/Mobile%20Uploads/IMG_20140620_081758_zps91eb97e6.jpg.html)
Stupid lady that hit me with your bike and left me on the ground with my groceries: I hope you get a terrible case of itchy bum in an embarassing situation because YOU BROKE MY COMB and I really really dislike you!
I need a bit of support. Even though yes, I can still wear the comb- it is broken and it makes me sad.
If anyone else has sad stories about broken toys, please share. Let's cry together!

No! Bad lady!! Beautiful comb.
"itchy bum in embarrassing situation" hahaha.... I sometimes hope someone will step on a piece of Lego, or get a paper cut, but this is more appropriate somehow.
ETA my sad post is that I broke my favourite fork a few weeks ago. I stupidly shoved it roughly into my hair, which was coiled way too tightly :( But it is wood so I glued it back together and you can barely see the join, it rides again (brontosaurus in my avatar)!

Oooh, i like the Lego curse because it HURTS stepping on Lego!
Also, hooray for glue!! because that Brontosaurus is fantastic. It would've been awful if it would be broken beyond repair, looks like a rather hard to find custom piece...?
Still, sad that it broke... Might not be visible but YOU know it's there. :( At least, that's how I feel about my comb.

Glad Lapushka's fork was okay. quattro must be sturdy. Sorry for the rest of the you. I would very upset with the lady on the bike, mostly because she seems to have been unperturbed for crashing into you. that stinks.
I don't have a broken hairtoy, but I was waiting on a ficcare superclip that I spent way too much money on --and it showed up with enamel or paint peeling off it. I'm quite upset, especially because superclips are not that easily found. I doubt I will ever find one again. And the seller is not responding to me yet. I did open a case on ebay.
I hope it will all work out but it feels like I broke a hairtoy.
I used to commonly break hairtoys before finding LHC but they were flimsy drugstore toys and hairclips that were never meant for a thick haired person. (Drugstore brands seem to assume that everyone's hair is 'average'--whatever that is. A lot thinner than mine, anyway.

two_wheels, thank you for the sympathy. It's all the more frustrating as the ebay seller is selling everyone else superclips that are fine. Which are showing up on the 'show your ficcare' thread looking beautiful, with everyone raving about them (I am trying hard not to be jealous, but its not easy). And the seller is about sold out at this point--to other LHC people--so I'm sure they will not be able to do an exchange for me, because there will be nothing left, when they get around to reading my email about the issue.
Aaargh!
Also superclips are so rare that I will be very surprised if I ever even see them available again.
the seller did put in their listing that the clips might be flawed, but this one is definitely damaged, which I think is different. the peeling paint snags my hair and can only get worse. Aaargh, again!
Sorry for whining. I don't want to whine over at the Ficcare thread and spoil everyone else's joy (though I have done a little whining there...)

First off: Thanks everyone for the kind support :flower: I left the comb alone for a few days, am still a bit sad, but hey it's still usable, so... oh well.
Some of your broken hairtoy stories are much worse!
Hele: HOW can hair break a TT? How! You have flesh eating hair? They are so sturdy! Man, that's awful, you try to do your hair really nice with a favourite stick and then SNAP... horror.
Chen: no. Just no. I know for what prices those clips go, and to pay an arm and a leg (and half a kidney) for one and then get a damaged clip, that is really not okay. Especislly if other peeps get nice ones and you can't say anything about your awful one... if you need to vent or show pictures, post them here as much as you want. This isn't just a broken hairtoy and life happening, you've been ripped off and that stinks way much harder. Bah!
And Brattina.... oh, no. That is an awful story. Don't hate the dog, she didn't know what she did, but more importantly she'll never be able to buy you a new one. Brothers might be better at being guild tripped or being held responsible. But, so sad. Black and white ebony is one of the prettiest woods out there (And it's darned dense! Lapushka, thanks for reminding me, I need to make an appoitment with my optrometist. I took in a pregnant stray cat last year, and apparently the six little suckers that she pooped out really liked to chew on my VERY EXPENSIVEbecause I have bad eyesight, not because they're fancy glasses when their teeth grew in. I just thought it was cute they all sat on my nightstand every morning, until I noticed the little teethmarks on the glasses. *sigh* Did you manage to get a new frame for around yours?

Argagagag that is NASTY! My cats are allowed in the bedroom, too, and one of them had some trouble with her teeth. It made her sneeze these horrible wet drooly-puss sneezes. We were working on it of course, but anyway, once I woke up to a bout of at least five wet kittysneezes that she sneezed STRAIGHT IN MY FACE AND HAIR. It was disgusting. And one of the babykittens I just wrote about had some gastrointestinal problems so I had to flush his poop out with a little tube and some water. Poor thing was so happy he could numbertwo again, he sprayed a fresh squirt of watery kittypoop straight in my hair  I think I had tu use about a half-year supply of shampoo to get the poopysmell out of my nostrils :tbear: Yuck. Then again, that are once-in-a-lifetime happenings, if you get licked by your cat every night that might be quite nervewracking :/ The munchysounds close to your ear... Since you're from Holland, I can say, I love stores like "Hans Anders" (cheaper glasses place) for a reason. I have bad eyesight too, and other places would charge extortionate amounts for glasses like mine. So yes, I got them replaced. My favorite stick ever, which if course you can't get anymore, is a Gabon ebony ketylo. Actually I had a pair, and kept one in my purse and one in my regular storage. I love those sticks better than my TT's, my Graydogs -better than any stick I own. I got drunk one night on pumpkin stout and lost half of a copper haze Ead stick pair, that was two years ago and i'm still not over it!
I have to admit... if I am out drinking, then the hairstick is only used whilst I am eating, after that it goes in to my bag (and I tend to wear things that won't get destroyed in my bag, quattro's are particularly good for being dressy/rugged). I'd be a very sad bunny indeed if I lost a stick on a night out!

Oppps! I just killed a Lilla Rose You pin that I tried on at a festival. :shudder: The lady insisted it would be big enough, but the head snapped right off! I tried to pay for it, but she wouldn't let me. She said it must have been a faulty piece. I bought some topped bobby pins to make up for it.

I broke my stick this morning :(.
It was a cheap plastic stick, but I've had it for years and will miss it. It was also half of the only pair of sticks I had. I don't mind wearing single sticks, but there are days when I want two. I feel like there should be a eulogy
Dear friends, we have gathered here to mourn the loss of our dear black stick with the knot on top. It was a good stick which will be remembered for the many buns it has held up, or merely decorated, over the years. It particularly enjoyed, along with its lifelong partner, the other black stick with a knot on top, the occasional infinity bun and regular lazy wrap buns. It was also patient in dealing with being put to uses for which it was never intended. Life in the hair-stick box simply will not be the same without it. It is survived by two sticks I whittled, a rather short and brittle blue stick, and the newcomers, a horn fork and poplar stick. The stick will be particularly mourned by its partner stick; despite some years when one of them would wonder off for a few months, they had resolved their difficulties and were as inseparable as the day they arrived in a store attached to the same card. Those two were the first sticks I ever owned, and my only sticks for many years. In conclusion, let us all remember to appreciate our loved ones while they are with us, for that sudden snap can come at any time.

Several combs. Who knows how many plastic hair clips or plastic accessories in general. Countless hair ties, bobby pins and u-shaped hair pins. A Jeterfork made from Wenge Wood.
I haven't broken any sticks, but then again, I haven't used any plastic hair sticks or other thin/flimsy hair sticks. I'm pretty good about being able to use more "fragile" hair toys without my thick hair eating them for a snack.

Well, lets think. The drain, obviously. Several times, and according to my SO something not unlike a dead rabbit is the cause of death. Countless plastic brushes and combs in my teens, they snapped in half and bristles and stuff could be found in the curls for days. And everything I have ever used to make an updo, save for solid high cuality wood. My hair sort of chews bobby pins and u-pins (are they tasty? No!) and spits them right out. So I ordered amish pins in the three largest sizes... only to find that six 3" pins can manage a braided bun for two hours, if I dont move around to much. Then out they fall. But not broken. Yet.

I had no idea I would be any more than a sympathiser here. What on earth could my wimpy hair break? This thread is for strong robust hair!
But here I am, telling my sad tale. I was re-bunning my hair at work (something that happens a few times a day) this morning and snapped my HairsticksNMore stick. Horrible sound and feeling. I foolishly don't have a spare with me so pulled apart a pen and now I have a pink hair "stick" with a silver label on it. I am grateful for once that I have thin hair otherwise I would have had to steal a chopstick from my boss, and that would have involved a tussle and I am sure he would have charged me for the chopstick.

Elastics, clips, combs, a very nice hair fork made of horn, the handles off of brushes, vacuum cleaners when I forget to service them regularly, earrings, all different kinds of pins, the arms of the last several people who tried to style it who weren't me, and I'm sure there is a lot more that I have forgotten over the years.

I shattered a hair fork made of horn one day while I was trying to stuff it into a relatively loose bun. It probably has something to do with the fact that the fork starting splitting along the grain. I never did figure out how to stop it from doing that, but I was still pretty upset when it broke. The pieces flew everywhere and almost hit a friend of mine in the eye.

I had a glass hairstick roll into my sink the other day, it was one of my favorites, and snapped into 3 pieces. I was so disappointed. But I got two more to replace it. Good excuse to get more hairtoys I guess. The sad thing is I had a copy of the same hairstick fall from the kitchen counter onto the floor and not break, but I guess a 4 inch roll into my sink was too much for its twin. I cant explain that one.

My hair has distroyed:
- multiple drains
- multiple combs
- almost every brush it has come into contact with
- hair ties
- and it eats up bobby pins
....and my hair isn't even long yet :P The joys of super curly/coily hair :D

I forgot. My hair doesn't stop at ripping the bristles from cheap brushes. Noooo - the handle comes off as well! And in class, when a ball got caught in the curls and sort of disappered. It was not exactly "killed", I kept running and the ball fell out, but if there had been a proper referee present at that game, they would have had to invent new rules.

September 5th, 2014, 05:12 PM
Hmm, let's see...
- Dozens and dozens of elastics. It breaks the elastic within the fabric after one or two uses, and snaps it entirely shortly thereafter, even if I'm not wearing it extremely tight.
- Claw clips. One tooth at a time, starting with usually the second wearing. Eventually the hinge snaps.
- My hair recently killed my drain about as badly as it's ever been killed. Took an entire bottle of Draino AND several sessions of plunging to bring it coughing back to life. I have a special plunger for sink-type drains, specifically for this reason.
- Those little spring tension french clips. My hair presses the sides all on its own and sends them rocketing off my head.
- Many, many paddle brushes. My hair will rip out the plastic tines right at the root, or chew off the ball tips. On a couple occasions, it's also ripped the entire pad out of the frame of the brush.
So far, I have managed to keep it from destroying any of my pretty toys and combs that I've gotten since joining the LHC (I no longer use any of the things above... well, apart from the drain, obviously).
But it did bend the pretty topper on one of my sticks and flex one of my wood forks, just to remind me who I'm messing with and to never let my guard down!

Jaw clips lose a few teeth when I try to wear them - or the hinge just pops apart; banana clips - my gosh those never stay in one piece when I try to use them; barrettes seem to come unhinged - even when I buy the thick hair ones (and my hair isn't even that thick); headbands - although I think that is mainly because I stretch them too far when I put them on my head; numerous elastics that have broken after 2 or 3 uses; and too many to count bobby pins.
Also, although I don't "kill" them, I seem to lose every scrunchie that I have ever brought home.

Every claw clip that I have ever used. Even when my hair was short, I would destroy claw clips within one use. I've also managed to crack a hairstick, but it's made of bamboo and still wearable - quite the flexible material! ;D I also recently killed the drain. I was rinsing out my hair in the bathroom sink a lot and yeah... it's clogged pretty bad. We've used some drain cleaner stuff but it didn't work. I've also broken several brushes (this was when I was a child. Before using combs.)

- All the claw and octopus clips I've ever tried. Either the mechanism snaps or the claws snap off as I close the clip.
- All barettes I've ever tried. They snap and catapult across the room
- All elastics within the first or second use. Danger zone!
- Plastic and wooden normal-spaced combs - the teeth snag and snap off. I only use wide-tooth combs now.
P.S. I'm not even counting all the u-pins and bobby pins that have been bent completely out of shape...

So nice to come back here to people who understand.
It was a not understanding weekend.
I tell my sister in law, who is a hairdresser (a GOOD one) that I might want to have my hair flat ironed for my birthday next week. She starts giving advice on how I should have it blow dried first so that really hot heat from the flat iron isn't on it too long, she's worried I might destroy my hair. I tell her, actually, the last two times a hairdresser tried to blow dry my hair (before LHC), the blow dryer comb attachment broke. (and as for using the brush and blowdryer, I have had brushes break in half in my hair on a regular basis since I was kid)--her jaw literally drops to her chest. Guess she never had a customer with really thick hair...
Before that, I went to the renfair with my friend, who is still trying to grasp that I can't use a claw clip to put up my whole hair with, the claw clip will break. (I can now use techniques learned on here though, to use claw clips around a bun). she starts telling me, I think I understand what you mean now, a claw clip is not as secure as those sticks you showed me, I feel my hair wobbling around with claw clips too, but that's okay, I just take them out and put them in again--
I repeat to her that it's not that a claw clip will wobble around, it will BREAK.
She still doesn't believe me, though. Keeps telling me what she thinks I 'must really' mean, because of course a claw clip can't break in a person's hair, literally.
sigh, a whole world out there of people who have never have something break or get lost in their hair--unbelievable.

Haha this thread is amusing! My kill list isn't large, but I've never owned a jaw clip (other than the current one I'm using) that didn't break by either cracking of having the hinge break, it's just a matter of time! (so my current jaw clip better watch out, it'll be next.) I've also broken a barrette and some hair elastics and a plastic head band, but maybe that one was my head's fault, not my hairs'

Well as a child i seldom experienced breaking anything other than s runchys.. My moms hair is quite a bit thicker than mine and in the 3c/4a range ( she started relaxing ever since she came to america but it it still afros somewhat if she lets it air dry.) all combs and clips where of some sort of metal when i was a child.. And still most of my hairclips are metal now.
But it has only been since lhc that i started to put my hair up sooo often and bought a whole bunch of tiny plastic clipies... And hairsticks...
I now only have one sole hairstick left... Out of 8 total hairsticks. 5 plastic.. 3 wooden... And every 3 months or so i have to buy bran new packets of clipies and scrunchys...... Thankfully.. My good old trusty metal clipies are durable.. So when i run out of the 2 dollar ones.. I default to the good ones till i can buy some more crappy ones.
Meh... Its quite funny... My sister faces the same problem and worse because her hair is just 3 inches from classic.. Lol.. She has no metal clippies to default on. I dont let her borrow mine, i feel she might break them even if they are metal..

My hair broke chopsticks, all my self-made sticks, brushes, combs, vacuum cleaners, and of course, the drain... I also apparently accidentally hit some guy really hard with my braid - he was really shocked, but us long-hairs know how strong hair is. ;) With brushes and combs, it might have been just because I was very, very rough when brushing my hair in the past.
As for jaw-clips, I have never broken them, because I would never even bother to try to hold all of my hair with them - they are ridiculously flimsy and always too small! I have no idea how people can put all of their hair up with just one (no matter how large) jaw-clip. I've always used them in simple half-ups and a few jaw-clips to hold down my crown-braid / milkmaid braids, that's it. I believe you can use multiple jaw-clips to hold down edges of your buns, easily. I think they are a good alternative to crimped U-pins in that role.
I do think claw clips are especially fragile. I'm surprised that more people don't understand that one.

That was very interesting, chen! It was hilarious how she had to come up with really extreme examples!
One thing I found interesting is when she talked about "other" claw-clips" with exposed springs that can't be covered (from 10:05). I realized that ALL of my claw-clips always had those exposed springs, I thought it's just because they are cheap, but I had no idea that those exposed springs result in much stronger jaw-clips. I have no idea how it works, but it's pretty interesting to hear about those details.

I've had long hair for a long time (30+ years). Naturally, in that time, my hair has killed all the things previously listed: barrettes, claw clips, jaw clips banana clips, endless elastics and any vacuum that dares have a beater brush on it. I've whacked both DH and my dance instructor senseless with my pony tail, but that's not actually breaking anything (they didn't have much sense to start with).
I once lost about 8" off my braid when it got sucked up into the dustbuster and wrapped around the drive shaft of the motor. It was a pretty funny sight actually, the dustbuster hanging off my head like a hungry crocodile, although when I stopped laughing, I started crying. For my hair, of course; the dustbuster went to the dump the next day. If my hair hadn't killed it, I would have.
As for clips and stuff, I've had much better luck with accessories since finding the LHC. But not entirely:

Claw clips do work holding the edges of buns and I got a truly GIGANTIC one from Claire's the other day that seems quite strong. I'm sorry Two_Wheels! I will join the crowd that didn't think Elymwolds were breakable! You hair is going to join Izzy in the toy-eating hall of fame! (Her hair ate a Ficcare. )
Seriously, I'm so sorry and I hope Nigel can fix it for you.

Not even a kill my hair can claim, unfortunately. This just happened. I tripped into a shelf where all my hair sticks and such have been stored. One was unlucky enough to tumble to the floor. Of course it was one of maybe 3 that could be damaged by such a fall.

I will be sending it in for repair next month. I have been warned it will have more character when it returns, because where he has to weld it, the spiral texture will disappear and smooth out. I am just so excite that it *can* be fixed and EmergentGlassworks quoted a very reasonable price for the repair.

Bwaaah! I wish I could say I've missed all the replies in this thread because I just missed them, but truth is, whenever this gets bumped I get a sinking feeling in my stomach and just don't look. A zombie TT, an Elymwold still fighting for its life and a glass stick that needs CPR? Horrible.
*sigh* I've so far broken TWO Hairsticks'nmore, both wood fused with acrylic ones, and thank ShoppingGoddes I could still fix them but the pain, the pain. But at least those weren't very rare. That poor, poor Elymwold especially, I LOVE Elymwolds, and Nigel never posts non-custom listings. So sad! Will you post recovery process pics, Two Wheels? And you too, Bobbyprincess? That might be a small counterweight against all the sadness.

To add to my Elymwold sadz, today I dropped my alabaster dymondwood GTS threnody. This is one of my all time favourite forks, and the only dymondwood apart from mamacats that ever deigned to stay in my hair.
The good news is that it's only a little tiny bit that chipped off, so it's just the smoothness rather than the aesthetics. Do I just sand it until it's smooth? Is that ok with dymondwood?
See how the top prong is now shorter? :justy:

Best to ask Kimi to make sure, but yes you can just sand dymondwood smooth, with very fine sandpaper, and shine it with a nail buffer. If you've got one of those multi-surface nail buffers, that would be perfect, sand it with the "shape" side. I've done this to get the blue back on to my 60th Street Mulberry fork.

Two_wheels, so sorry about the chip! :( But I'm really happy that sandpaper is safe to use on that stunning GTS! I had a small tine break off a dymondwood fork too once, Two_wheels. It's indeed not very hard to fix, even though it's a sad affair. If you're going to sand all the tines a bit so it's symmetrical, please do that outside because the dust isn't nice for your lungs.
Stormy: That's just horrible. Was it a fault in the wood? My gosh, that IS so sad. Would it be possible to make a three prong extra fat topped fork out of that one? It would be such, such a waste to just let it be like this.
This is food for nightmares. :wail:

Questions:
#1: are you sending it (have sent) it back to him?
#2: is he charging you for the second?
Possible #3: (if the answers above are "no"), I would happily purchase that fork from you(under retail, please), and you can send the money forward to him, for his time and efforts. The little (olive?)beauty is still perfectly functional, and gorgeous, and just needs some sanding, and very minor reshaping.

That's genius! I can definitely see the head of snake there, too - it's a gorgeous and unique look! And since the fourth prong is now missing the head of the snake can sort of rest on top of the bun or generally stick out from the bun more visibly. I think it will look phenomenal! :D

Yeah, I was also thinking it could be sanded into a second life. Or possibly even reattach the fourth prong, with a metal rod in the core for support, or a little wooden piece to keep it al together. I dunno what that is called in English but it's a common way to attach wood to wood. I'd do it for you, Stormy, except that there are probably more able woodworkers around here than I am. It will look different but it's not dead yet I think.

They were gifts from a previous bf when he went to South Africa. I don't know what they are called but it was two big combs joined together with beading. They were great for buns. I had a red one and a purple one. I was trying to find them so I could get them passed on to a new home. I'm really sad I can't find them. They held like a rock, you could sleep on them, and they were elegant.

I think I will need to stick to metal hair forks :( Makes me extra sad because I VASTLY prefer the look of natural wooden ones.
In the past 6 months I have broken 4 hair forks with my hair...no dropping, no 'torque', just straight up trying to get them in my dang bun.
2 Over the Hawaiian Moon forks (one little and one long)
and both brand new horn ones from Quecraft. A fancier little (i thought) comb for brushing, and a sturdier-looking hair fork. SO upset :(
I contacted Quecraft about the comb, since one of the tines snapped when I attempted to just run it through my hair...I can't bring myself to message her about the fork too. It's just a little crack so I think I'm going to super-glue the heck out of it and pray. *sigh* I'm going to get a replacement for the comb form her though...hopefully one I can brush with.
Any suggestions for my fork-eating hair??? Each time I was being careful, but my bun just sort of ate them... I think I need to find 5-6 inch heavy-duty type forks if I'm going to be successful. I got the horn one from quecraft thinking it would be super durable and comfy AND have a look I liked, I guessed wrong. :/

How is the tension on your buns? If it's too tight that could definitely be why you keep breaking toys.

How is the tension on your buns? If it's too tight that could definitely be why you keep breaking toys.
The first fork from OTHM I did use a very tight bun - it was my first fork, so I didn't know and it was a little small for me, so I thought a smaller bun might get to to hold...
The second fork from OTHM I tried a fairly loose bun...the problem is my buns just won't hold if they're too loose.
The comb from Quecraft I was just gently brushing and a tine snapped.
The fork from Quecraft I was trying with a fairly loose bun, not too tight because I wanted to protect the fork...but I had just about got it all the way in and I hear a little 'snap' :( I think it's just how tick/strong my hair is??? The tines on the forks seem to be the problem, my hair doesn't seem to let the tines stay firm - it either forces them together or apart. Even if my bun is loose.
two_wheels
October 8th, 2014, 12:46 PM
My hair does that, librarychick. Even done loosely it has broken several high quality items. Sniffle.
Sticking to metal sounds good. I love wood, so do use wooden forks, but I am ultra careful to feel whether the tines are bending now, even if the whole thing feels loose. It does mean re-doing things sometimes.
librarychick
October 8th, 2014, 01:18 PM
Yeah, I think that was what happened with the Quecraft fork. I'd tried with a super loose bun but had no luck, when I tried slightly tighter it snapped. :(
I think I'll stick to sticks...maybe get a moon? They seem quite sturdy! I have a few great sticks from OTHM and they're perfect for my hair AND my style. I'd just like more day-to-day variation. *sigh* If I do buy more it'll have to wait until next month. The budget has decreed it so, lol.

I have a moon- it's lovely and yes, very sturdy :)
Also, I have yet to see a grahtoe fork that my hair can bend the tines of. They are very sturdy.
I personally have always found jeterforks to be fine, too - but have read of others having problems. Maybe you might have success with one of those?
The quecraft ones look pretty flimsy to be honest, I don't think I'd let my hair near them.

librarychick, I'm very sorry to hear about those toys breaking. :(
For toy-eating hair, I wanted to suggest using sectioned buns and multiple hair toys/tools to keep hair up.
I often can't push a fork/stick through (or it would break), so I have to loosen it up... and of course my bun comes undone, so I have to re-do it many times a day! What helps is:
1) making bun loose-ish and then using a couple u-pins or claw-clips around the perimeter; or
2) sectioning it: doing a bun with a half-up and wrapping other hair around, using another toy or claw-clips / u-pins.
An added bonus is that sectioned buns feel WAY lighter and more comfortable on scalp.

Mini-rant.
I'm annoyed: I only have two cheap plastic sticks and a wooden one. Now, I'm down to two because people like being DESTRUCTIVE. :demon: I accidentally had one of my hairsticks fall out behind me without my knowledge. Now, I'm very grateful to have found it after being clumsy, but when I found it, somebody had dragged both ends against the concrete like chalk. Grrrr. I know who did it too (it was a band member in my section). I am the ONLY person I know who consistently wears hairsticks. Now, this person things it's fun to ruin the smoothness of my hairsticks and think it was just discarded. He should know better; another member of my section who I see much less frequently knew it was mine and alerted me about its presence after I had lost it. She knew it was mine and didn't think it was garbage. I know this is my fault for leaving it behind, and it's only a very cheap stick, but it's one of the only ones I have. Why? Why do people like to break things?

rusika1
October 9th, 2014, 07:57 PM
Sanding will probably work, you just need really fine sandpaper. Don't try to melt it! You run the risk of burns (who knows how long it might retain heat, and the temptation to try to squish it into shape would be high), possible eye and respiratory irritation from the fumes, and an overwhelming chance that you'd end up with a burnt, gloppy, unwearable stick.

Good point. I'm prone to burning myself when I work with fire. I'm not exactly sure that sandpaper would work, though. The rest of the stick is quite glossy. Nail polish as a finish, perhaps?
Majorane
October 9th, 2014, 11:29 PM
Maybe, but some plastics do weird things in combination with nail polish, so do a spot test first! Sanding plastic does work, and if you finish with a good buff with one of those nail buffer blocks you can achieve a pretty okay shine without any polish. I feel like I hail the greatness of nail buffer blocks a bit too much but I do use them up faster than.... wel almost as fast as toilet paper, because I buff 'n shine a lot of things with them. You might want to do the sanding outdoors with the dust blowing away from you, or with something covering your mouth. A bit of dust is unlikely to kill you but it can be irritating for the sinusses. That goes for all kinds of wood, too.
Might I ask what mysterysticks these plastic ones are? They usually are wood or acrylic, I rarely see or hear about plastic sticks...? :)

One of those nail buffers for shining the surfaces of your nails will do the trick. They should produce a glossy finish without varnish etc. These things are an absolute boon for re-finishing stuff.

I did a spot test with nail polish and saw no ill effects, so I went ahead with it, and it worked well! The rough edges are still visible if you look hard, but are smooth, so no snagging.
Majorane, I'm pretty sure they're cheap plastic, the kind you might find at Claire's or at Sally's. I have one in black and one in faux tortoiseshell. They're twisted, like the fake icicles you might see on a Christmas tree, if that makes sense. I think they're plastic, because I can see through one of them, they have a small seam, and they have a little give, which can be nice, because it's a warning bell to the amount of tension a bun has.(Although that also serves to freak me out, because I can't really replace them (or buy ones for myself))

I know they were lost, not broken, but I figured this was the right place to come to mourn my dear departed (from my possession at least) hairtoys. They were most likely left in a hotel room or a car a while ago during some crazy traveling, totally my fault, but I found myself really wishing I had the stick today and thought you guys would be the ones who would understand my angst, lol.
Here they are, super awesome kanzashi stick and brass fork. I like to think some longhaired person was really excited to find them and uses them, even though most likely they ended in the trash.

Last night as I was putting my hair up in my sleep bun, which is secured by an octopus clip, my poor octi lost a couple of arms.
Soooo, I'm kind of sad about the clip, even though it's a cheap drugstore thing, but I love it and it's reliable for just throwing my hair up. I was aware that I should, and have been, using 2 of them to put my hair up at night, but was lazy and didn't want to go find the second one.
I'm also kind of happy that my hair has graduated to toykiller status, even if it's not on the same level as killing grahtoes, wood forks and sticks, oh my.
Also, kudos to the person who wrote the eulogy for their stick. I had tears in my eyes.
