View Full Version : Time for the chop?

August 10th, 2013, 07:13 PM
Hi all :)
I cut my hair from tailbone to jean waist band a few months back, it's been really good, I'm now thinking I might like to go to this type (http://www.stylebistro.com/lookbook/Lana+Del+Rey/0o_f8zfKSKV/angle/6GXX4SQV-bF or http://www.celebrityredcarpet.co.uk/article/lana-del-rey-will-2013-be-her-year-just-like-2012_a2514/1) of length, which would seem to be just below bra strap length.........although it looks longer in some pics I'm thinking it may be extensions. I've always had long hair, since I was 5, so I've had long hair for like 21 years!! And although I consider bra strap length 'short' I know technically it's not and if I want it long again it will grow back in a couple of years, my hair grows pretty fast, and in the mean time I can do more stuff like curling and more complicated updos........plus wear it out more! I just have this feeling like since I cut it I'm not anticipating it growing back, which I always do.........and thinking of having it shorter doesn't freak me out anymore.......so what do you guys think? I know only I can decided but all input is nice :) I've also thought about dip dying 6-7 inches blue and then chopping it off when it fades, hence managing 2 hair changes in one go

I'd say Go for it! Sounds like fun!

Change can be fun, and your dip dye idea sounds good. You can try the fun dye color without being too upset if it damages your hair, since you are thinking of cutting that part off anyway.

August 10th, 2013, 08:22 PM
I say try it you can always grow it out again.

August 10th, 2013, 08:25 PM
Thats what I'm thinking, I'll think about it for a few more weeks, but it's looking like I might :)

August 10th, 2013, 08:27 PM
I'm not sure I understand. I agree that those are probably extensions, but the woman's hair in the pictures looks to me like it's at hip or so. Even in the second picture, it looks like it'd be waist in the back and hip length or close to it if you stretched the curls. Maybe her own hair ends around BSL, but I can't tell for certain.

I dip-dyed the last 4-5 inches of my hair blue. They'd been damaged in the past. When I cut off the blue, all of my hair will be virgin. I'm enjoying it, have gotten a lot of compliments, and think it's a great idea.

If you've been thinking about it for a while, I say go for it! Otherwise, the two-week rule may be useful. :)

I also thought that length in the pictures is at least hip. The dip dye idea does sound fun. If you do go for it I hope you like shorter hair since you said that you always had long hair. I would chop little at a time to see how you feel though.

Hmmm maybe, it just seems like she does a lot with it (curls it, dyes it, teases it, updos etc) and it never looks damaged and it often looks shorter or longer during a week. example of 'shorter' length http://www.celebrityredcarpet.co.uk/article/lana-del-rey-goes-for-blue-eyeshadow-should-you_a4180/1 is it just me underestimating the length? Maybe because mines so poker straight? I've also been looking at pics of Elizaveta Golovanova, she has amazing hair!, and I'm seeing they put it in very nice updos-maybe I just need more practice? ;)

Is that really hip length?

August 11th, 2013, 01:15 AM
It certainly longer than BSL... I agree that if you stretched it out it would reach past her waist in the front which means it would probably be hip in the back.

August 11th, 2013, 01:51 AM
I think that Lanas' hair is definitely hip, check out how short mine looked when done in a similar style when it was at solid waist length straight!

August 11th, 2013, 04:16 AM
I say go for it! You know it'll grow back and you can have fun with it without worrying too much. I think dip dyeing looks great!

I do agree that Lana's hair is longer than it looks in that photo. When I had waist length hair it would shrink a ton when I waved or curled it!

August 11th, 2013, 05:30 AM
Thanks guys :) My hair refuses to hold a curl so I've never seen how much length it takes up.......wow :)

August 11th, 2013, 05:31 AM
Also hello Ambystoma, a fellow aussie :)

August 11th, 2013, 07:01 AM
Well I can tell you with certainty she wears extensions, and to me, very obvious ones.

As for your hair, cut it! I cut mine from well below waist to mid back in about March (might have been February) Unfortunately it's go to waist length again now, but it still looks much better than it did.
I can wear it loose every day now and get extravagant compliments every day too. When it was longer, the only comments I got was "Oh your hair's really long" That was if it was loose. If it was braided or in a ponytail everyone totally ignored it.
I really don't think the majority of people find anything past waist length hair attractive (I don't myself to be honest)

Is that really hip length?

That's definitely waist length to me.

August 11th, 2013, 08:49 AM
BSL hair, when pulled on the front, usually fall right above the breasts. Much shorter than in the photos!

August 11th, 2013, 10:22 AM
Go for it!

August 11th, 2013, 03:15 PM
If you want to do it as badly as it sounds you do, go for it!
But Lana's hair does look to be at least waist. Extensions or not, she also has photoshop, stylists, and tons of product at her disposal to keep it looking "healthy".

August 11th, 2013, 08:08 PM
True, I want a photoshop expert on staff too LOL Having had a closer look at mine I think lopping of 6 inches will make it around waist length........it seems to have grown while I wasn't looking! Pulled down over the front after taking off 6 inches will land it just below boob level.....at the moment it's belly button level :) I can totally sympathise Monamayfair, I often get the 'oh it's really long' comments and not much else and it can be painful to wear anyway but plaited. I think long hair is lovely but it definitely isn't the norm......maybe I'm just feeling more ready to conform? I don't know :)

August 12th, 2013, 02:01 AM
If you're ready to cut then go for it! It's not as if you're going really short... you'd be at a length that would grow back pretty fast.

August 12th, 2013, 09:26 PM
Yeah, shouldn't take more than a year and a half :) Here are some more links to hair I love, it's a shorter length I think:

Could she be anymore perfect? I'd kill for her hair, it's perfection to me LOL

August 13th, 2013, 02:54 AM
Just so I know for sure when asking the hair dresser what length would you class the above hair? Mid back? Waist?

August 13th, 2013, 02:59 PM
Take a picture with you!

August 13th, 2013, 03:03 PM
I just wanted to say that those pictures in the first post are my goal. SO CUTE! Especially with the curls. I also say go for it with the dip-dye. I love edgy looks.

August 13th, 2013, 04:20 PM
Thanks :) I will def take a pic, but I like to know myself to be sure :) It looks between midback and waist to me?

August 13th, 2013, 07:57 PM
It looks like about waist to me, but personally if I was going to a hair dresser I would point to what part of my body I want my hair to fall as well as saying you want it cut to "waist" because not all hair dressers might be able to tell where waist is unless you show them visually. Good luck if you do end up chopping :blossom:

August 13th, 2013, 08:06 PM
Who knew hair lengths were so confusing? LOL

August 13th, 2013, 08:09 PM
Also what length would you call my hair now? It's in my avatar pic. I thought it was sort of between waist and hip but I must be wrong cause it seems heaps longer than the pics I posted *confused*

August 16th, 2013, 05:19 AM
She definitely wears extensions (her new video shows glimpses of her natural hair length), but I still really love that length & it is what I'm aiming for. I'd say go for it!

August 16th, 2013, 05:28 AM
I agree, show how much hair you want cut off. Hairdressers dont have the same measurements as normal people, its usually the double from what you asked.

August 16th, 2013, 05:39 AM
to me she looks waist-length
