View Full Version : Growth rate poll (inches/year)

I expect nearly everyone here knows their yearly growth rate--this way we can avoid slight month to month or seasonal variations. I also wonder if shorter hair grows faster, but that will be harder to include in the survey.

If you trim, include the trimmed length

9 inches per year--actually it must be somewhat more because I do trim 2 or 3 times.
However, being a curly it gets taken up in shrinkage and it doesn't look like it grows as much it does.
This is genetic. My father's hair grew so fast that when men wore crew cuts, he had to cut his hair biweekly to keep it short enough. I partly don't like short haircuts on myself because they look messy within 2 or 3 weeks from hair growth.
It's not fast growing hair that gets you to long though--its retention. My mom's hair grows faster than mine but breaks off just as fast and she's never had longer than ear length hair.
There is a lady who works in the bank near me who can and regularly does grow her hair from brastrap to waist in six months (then she gets a chop and donates)--she has the fastest growing hair I know. She grows like 9-10 inches in six months, I've never seen anything like this on anyone else. the ends don't thin out either (though she doesn't have very thick hair).

Last year my hair grew about 7inches (total including trimmed bits), but it's my first year measuring so it could change!

I voted 6-8 inches but I think it could be more. I should measure my regrowth each time I henna to get a precise measure!

So many percent in the 6-8 and 8-10 inch sections. Wish that would be me.. :(

I answered 4-6". It's generally at least 5-6" b/c I trim frequently (dust the ends). Otherwise it might be higher. :disco:

Probably more like 7-8" including trims..

The last couple years I've had between 7 and 8 inches of growth total

My growth rate is 13cm (5”) per year only.

6.25 this year counting my .25 inch trim I netted 6. So I went with 6-8 hopefully that'll keep right on going!

I voted 6-8 because I don't measure often but I think I'm a little above the 'average' 6 inches. I'm short too so it looks like more :p

I've been getting an inch of growth for the past 3 or 4 months...I put my average as 10-12 as I know some months it'll be slower than that, plus I trim a couple times a year.

Expectopatronum, awesome!l do keep a longer record and report back (in a year and two).

I am lucky enough to average an inch per month. I'm pretty sure that I've grown 12-13 inches in the past year. :) I trimmed all but 5 of those off as I was getting rid of old bleach/dye damage.

You need an option for those of us who don't measure and don't pay that much attention to inches. A lot of us grow from one body marker to the next, for instance, and unless you know how many inches is between APL and BSL, it's hard to say what the measured growth is. At a guess, I'd say 6-8", but for all I know it's 5, or 10, or 12. I think you need a "No idea" category. :p

Here is a confession--I have never measured until lhc asked me a question while registering. But I got curious after I saw a few posts and looked at some pictures from last two or three years and estimated and averaged out those with a month or two of growth that I tried to measure--it is an imprecise measurement system but I arrived at little over 7inches each time and that makes sense. My hair has gorwn faster than what hairdressers expect even when it was thin but not terribly so.

Chen bao jun, agree curly and wavy hair can mask growth rate but regardless that is the growth! I have seen some curly haired girls here (maybe you too?) whose hair is down to hip or longer when stretched but seems like shoulder. It is pretty with so much volume.

SerinaDaith
July 19th, 2013, 06:30 PM
My curls make it look like I am somewhere between shoulder and upper back length even though stretched I am finnaly APL. I figure I'll look to be APL somewhere between BSL and waist. Silly curls eat length so fast.

I think about six exactly but to be honest I am not 100% sure, that will be something to keep track of going forward. Too bad it doesnt grow like 12

It averages out to around 6-8''. However, in april-september it grows around 1-2'' per month, and then most of winter I shed and grow very little!

I'll take it. :)

Right on 6" per year I think, at least so far. Started at about 1" in length, now 15 months later it's about 9-10 inches long. :)

its like 6-9 inches a year. i can get to nine if im taking really good care of it :P maybe 10? i just need the perfect routine to help my scalp and hair ends :P but itll get there :P sounds crazy but in a year and a half i got from apl+ - buttcrack? yeah. sounds good. feels short to me and too long but im tall XD i see ppl on here who go from apl-classic maybe aroundthat same time. their shorter so :P probably 4 feet somehting or 5 feet.

Am I the only one who gets insane growth in winter?!? Seriously, cold winter months and spring grows the most, summer doesn't grow as much.

Beborani
July 22nd, 2013, 09:40 AM
Interesting to see LHC average is also tending towards 6.
I have no idea whether I have seasonal variation in growth though when my hair was shorter, I would get a big chop around spring and keep it longer over winter--that was mostly my moods.

My hair growth has been between 4-6 inches over past 2 yrs but used to be 6-8 inches before ...
Question: Does hair growth slows down with age ??

Nope, I do too!

I voted 6-8 though that is really just a guess. In the past I've gotten a little more than the standard half inch a month. Lately I have been getting better growth (probably closer to an inch) but it is too soon to tell (:

Why is there no cheese option? :p I can't be the only one who doesn't measure my hair.

I like that the average seems to be around 6, validating the 1/2 inch a month theory. I am mystified, though, by those who put either <2 inches or >10 inches. Wow.

Where I live we use the metric system, so I always heard that hair grows 12 cm every year on average, = almost 5 inches. That's apparently on the short side, but it seems to be about right for my hair, so I voted 4-6 inches :)

My hair always used to grow fast(around 10 inch a yr) but since I permantly live in the Middle East (since last fall)it is growing insane fast. I talked about this with some other immigrants and all experience the same. I also got a significant amount more arm hair :/ I have no idea where this is coming from but as far as my hair on my head I'm very happy w it. It's growing a steady 1 to 1.25 inch a month at the moment. I color so that's how I know . I had a cut twice this year and ended up w mid back length last may. I'm waist now again and planning on cut out the damage before trying for tailbone again

8-10 I think. Normally it would be a stable 6 but since I started experimenting with CO and oils it started growing faster...

DancingQueen
May 4th, 2014, 02:40 AM
Actually, I don't know my growth rate. I stopped measuring long ago, as it always seems inaccurate, and painfully slow growth. But since my hair is wavy/curly/wurly, the progress shows even less. I also trim about 1,5 cm every 3 months (unfortunately, my hair needs it). My guess would be around 12 cm a year (4,7 inches), but I can't be sure. I hope it is more, but you never know. Maybe I should start taking a picture once or twice a year, just to estimate the difference. :)

I grow exactly 1cm every 4 weeks no matter what I do. However I've only been measuring since December so who knows summer might spring a surprise on me. Fingers crossed anyway lol

12 inches.......??????....... How cool would that be. I could grow and get rid of my see through ends and layers.

I'm pretty even on the 6 inches per year, sometimes a touch more, sometimes at touch less.

It's about 6 inches on average with 4 trims a year, so it's probably more. But 6 inches is what I end up with at the end of the year.

I averaged my length by the number of months I have been growing - since it started sprouting again. I came up with 8.16 inches a year. Its very fine so I have probably lost length due to breakage over time even with just finger combing only. I've never trimmed it since it sprouted back. From what I feel there is probably only a few splits but I can't SD them because of vision issues - legally blind - which means I can see some but I can't get at look at my ends.

I don't pay attention to how much it grows per month. I assume I have an average growth rate.

I haven't really measured but it grew from about 12 inches to 33 with three one inch trims in just under 3 years. It looks really long, almost TBL, because I am really short! When I was a kid of 10 it was down to my knees and had never been cut I think. I've had many times in my life when I have chopped it off to pixie from long, and grown it back after a year or two. Before this length now, I had kept it short for about 12 years. The only reason I grew it out was because my hairstylist went out on maternity leave for about 6 months, and by the time she came back, I was just out of the awkward phase and decided to keep going. And actually, now that I haven't cut it significantly for a while, I'm glad I'm not going to that stylist anymore. She seemed to have an obsession with the thinning shears and that's why I have multiple length hairs.

About 7 years ago I had major problems with vitamin B12 deficiency, and I lost about 30 percent of my hair. It was pretty short at the time but I still would clog the drain screen every day when I showered. Before that I'd only shed twice a year for several weeks and never lost any hair in between shedding. Since then, I shed continuously, but never a huge amount. My doc says I got abundant hair genes...and the hair keeps growing, thank goodness. About 7-8 inches a year maybe? But I think I might be pretty close to terminal length, so it's hard to tell.

May 17th, 2014, 08:26 AM
In the last 3 years it has gone from 30 to 41.5 inches, which is almost exactly 4 inches a year. That does include several small trims, so probably would have been 5-6 inches per year without that (although in practice it wouldn't have been, since the ends would have broken off).

It has been 12 months since I have been keeping track, and I have gained 10 inches! I was so surprised by how fast it grows. I always held the thought that 'Oh my hair grows so slow'.

A possible 9 inches since my hair grew .75" last month. I've only ever measured my progress once, and I'm curious to see how long it grows as Summer hits here.

This can be an symptom of a severe illness. For example a metabolic disease. When I take a too high dosage of my metabolic hormone pills my hair grows like hell and it means, I'm NOT healthy. Too fast growing hair (and nails) in many cases means something is wrong with the metabolism. And an extremely fast metabolism is nothing good because it also means that the body ages faster. So, I don't even think about upping my dosage to make my hair grow faster. When I was her I'd go to see a doctor. It's NOT normal and NOT healthy that a body works fast like this. Many doctors tell you this when you ask. Does she look her age or older?
With hyperthyroidism for example hair grows much faster and the body ages faster. With hypothyroidism it stops growing and you feel bad but age slower. A proven fact. So, I keep my pills as low as possible. And my hair grows the average 6 inches per year.

Edit: I forgot something.
Why do biotin ans MSM make your hair grow faster? Because they speed up your metabolism.

I voted for 8-10 inches but maybe slightly more. I attribute it to not only genetics(I don't eat very well, I'm lazy and fussy), but to my scalp care routine.
I make natural hair tonics with herbs, spices, oils and EOs. I'll mix the stuff that has anti-fungal, anti-bacterian, stimulating, calming and healing properties in a very clean jar and leave it do infuse in the dark for a few weeks. I also add some things that help with circulation, like rosemary or eucalyptus EOs.
Although I'm a fussy and lazy eater, I try to drink at least one juice a day, with either carrots, or ginger, or spinach. Started doing it a few months ago and I've felt a difference.

I grow a pretty steady half inch per month most of the year, but then in the summer and fall I usually have some extra, and I think I average about 7 inches per year. I've never really kept track over a long period of time, though, so some of this is guess work.

Since I started letting my hair grow 5 years ago, I've averaged 5 inches gained per year with trims.

I don't feel like my hair has grown that much in the past year but then again i did trim quite a few times and once time was tather generous. My lengths became noticably fuller but in terms of length is probably only 4 inches more than it was last year around this time.
