To celebrate the upcoming American holiday here is my contribution. I actually posted this at the paranda thread, but this one is special to me as it was my first paranda. Can't wait to see yours Gumball. :)

Can't wait to see yours Gumball. :)

I've never made nor worn one before. Can you believe it? I did look up instructions, though, so maybe I'll work on one. Consider me inspired by your celebration paranda. I might have to be a copycat! It's going to take a lot of yarn with my length...

Yeah I can't imagine what size your bun will turn out. I bet you can get really creative with your length. Thanks! I'm glad to hear from you. As it turned out, I only got to wear my independence day paranda half the day since it was heavy to begin with and to add a Ficcare just gave me scalp soars. But it's ok now since I just washed my hair with some cold water to calm the scalp down and it's working. :)

I used the instructions by Arrow to make a paranda. However, since my hair already makes a thick braid, I decided to use half the number of strands of yarn (wool handspun by me). I'll take a pictures when I'm all done.

Nope, gonna have to use a different color. The color I used has pretty much blended in with the dark morass that is my hair.

I wasn't used to it so the weight eventually got to me and I took it down for a while.

I meant to use my bead paranda on the Fourth, but forgot to pack it. Here is a picture of a prior wearing.

I remember seeing a video tutorial on how to make one, but I kinda forgot about the whole thing. Seeing all these lovely pictures of paranda-styles just makes me goo "Ooooh, I want to try that right now!". Too bad most of my yarns with that special "Oomph!" effect are not here right now. But I think I will find something suitable. I mean, even if I only brought like measly two bags of yarn with me for summer vacation... :D

So I made this on a whim. This is my first attempt at a paranda and a paranda braid bun. I'm quite happy with the results and I'm also loving the extra 'length' and 'thickness' in my hair...It's really making me look forward to when my hair is actually this long!

I'm confused what a paranda is. I looked online and saw some kind of long strand things with large ornaments hanging from the bottom. But most of you are braiding yarn into your hair.

Those would be the traditional Punjabi parandas. They would be braided in the same way these kind are. It's just these are made out of yarn and don't have a decorative tassel.

These things are so great. The only trouble is after you take them out and remember your hair isn't really that long.

I made a brown yarn paranda over the weekend while watching TV. I was too lazy to go get my measuring tape, so I guestimated the length. It's ridiculously long. Fully braided it comes down to my butt, when my natural hair only is mid back. So far I've only worn it to sleep at night, but I'll try to do an updo with it this week.

BTW, I loved it for sleeping. The extra length enabled me to toss my braid up over the top of my pillow and it stayed there, so I could toss and turn without rolling on it. Normally I'm having to extricate my braid from underneath me every time I turn over. It was wonderful not to have to.

I think my bun is more hair comedy than hair artistry , but I've been aching to try out some of the hairstyles of the month, so here is my first paranda attempt. My pony tail is only about 5.5 inches, so the ends are sticking out all over. The tutorials I looked at showed the paranda braided into a low ponytail, but that didn't work with my length at all. I put my hair up with an elastic, then added one section of the paranda into the ponytail so it would be tighter.

And pinned it to my own board.

Not a paranda, but I figured out a way to use dreadlock extensions similar to what you all are doing, to extend my braid. Make it thicker and longer.

I tried, but it looked very strange, so no pics. I make a pale rose paranda, and braided into my pony tail, but the yarn was just too different from my curly, layered hair, that it just looked silly. Perhaps if I braided it in when my hair was wet. But I like my hair pouffy and curly - I don't really like it smoothed out into a braid anyway... If I try again with wet hair, I'll post a pic.

Just made it! Have one more set to add of the blue/green I also made today.

Made two sets and the one in this cinnamon bun is the three shades of brown. One of the shades is so close it just about disappears, oh, well. So, here it is - one with flash; one without. The celluloid comb is a lovely prong I thought matched the paranda really well!
