What do you do with the hair you're not putting henna on, when you're putting henna on other bits?
So far I've ended up glossing the length, as I couldn't figure out a way to stop henna getting on it when it's all wrapped up, and I didn't want patchiness, but I think today might be the last time I can do that without starting to get too saturated :/
Any ideas?

How about coating it in conditioner? :)

That's what I do, condition or deep treatment with SMT on the un-henna'ed length.

I just do my roots and put the rest in a bun. Always works.

I just make little bits of henna for roots. Then I open up my hair to roots needed and paint on with a little paintbrush like you use for little kids. Just dab onto the roots, and go to the next part. I leave the ends and length free, and just put my shower cap/hat on my head, and voila. . . . hang out for a while like that. Works for me!

This of you who don't put anything on the length, does it not get bits of henna on it from just being against it? does this not leave patches of darker henna where its touched?
I like the conditioner/SMT idea though, not sure why that didn't occur to me! :p

When I used henna, I did roots with a henna/cassia mix and did the lengths with cassia on its own.
I don't think the henna transferred onto the lengths, but it was a lighter mix anyway.
I have also done the henna on the roots, put plastic wrap and shower cap on, and leave the rest hanging down.

Part of the reason I gave up on roots-only. My whole head wound up getting dyed regardless.

I do double French braids very loosely. Apply Henna to roots with a condiment bottle and kind of mash in a bit. Then wrap, shower cap, and hat. Voila, I never have any patchiness.

I always would do a couple loose braids sticking out from different sections of my head, then just sorta bun them. The henna'll get on the hair that's already had some, but I never heard of anyone having patchy hair or lines where they had overlap. That said, my hair's naturally auburn, so even having roots is non-obvious for me.
