View Full Version : If heat styling didn't damage (or didn't damage as much), would you do it?

Now, if heat styling weren't going to get in the way of healthy hair (and my hair does split easily), I would do a full heat blow dry once a week and/or use a curling iron to give smooth curls. I'm looking forward to doing this when I'm at goal, but probably more like every other week.

Those of you who don't heat style, would you? What kind would you do? Are you going to heat style when you get to goal length? How often?

I pretty much never have, and don't ever plan on starting. I simply can't be bothered to spend the time and effort. Besides, as far as I remember, my hair got all poofy and odd when mom blow dried it occasionally. Not something I feel the need to repeat.

If it wouldn't damage my hair I would so blow dry it. To help tame frizzies and to speed up drying time.

The pepper jack would be nice! I would be crimping, curling, straightening blow-drying til my hair was a giant poofy thing! I would just try & make an afro!

The only thing that helped not cut off major amounts of hair while I was growing it out was to curl the ends, so that it "hid" the uneven-ness & smoothed out the splits (but only on date night or for church, mom, etc)

I wouldn't do anything. The few times I did try to blow dry my hair the last time it was this long and longer, it took forever and still didn't get completely dry, so there's no point. It'll dry straight no matter what I do. One of the few advantages, I suppose, of having hair that won't hold artificial curl, etc. for any reason. No temptations here.

I would so flat iron my hair to help smooth things out and help get rid of frizzies.

I would straighten my hair when I get tired of my curls. And for the wow factor.

i used to do some insane things to my hair.. ill put them on an album when i can. im surprised all of it hasnt like fallen off.. insane hairspray 24/7, backcombing, curling, straightening, up all the time, let it tangle up and not be nice to it.. i wish it wouldnt damage my hair or i still would

No. I'll have the cheese please! I don't like the look of ironed hair and I'm wagering blowfrying would cause endless tangling! No thanks!

If heat styling caused no damage whatsoever, I would still not do it. Why? Because I think it's a complete waste of time. There's no way I would waste 10-30 minutes of my life every day doing my hair (not to mention fighting nature). That's why I have long hair in the first place - so that I don't have to spend forever styling it and maintaining it.

Not only do I find heat styling a waste of time and money, it's boring. What are you supposed to do while standing there for 10 minutes doing your hair?

JessieJo

I like to curl the ends of my hair to make them look more finished.

Deborah

You need an option titled something like, "No. I'd never use heat styling anyway as it is a royal pain in the neck."

So I voted :cheese:

I used to flat iron and if it didn't make my hair feel like STRAW I would probably go back - I hate the 'so-straight-it-looks-wet' look, I always just kinda roughly did it to even out my wavy hair so it framed my face more softly. :)

And as a highjack; do those 'heat protect spray' products actually prevent heat damage? I kind of suspect that they don't do an awful lot or we'd all ust use them.. but sometimes I do miss smooth manageable hair!! (Even if it made my untreated hair even drier and wilder!)

I would curl every now and then. Mostly it's too much effort because my hair is fairly long by non-LHC standards (hips or maybe tailbone), but I do get bored sometimes and so I like to do big loose ringlets.

Nat242
August 30th, 2008, 03:53 AM
I would straighten (probably with a flat iron) every now and again. Even without the damage, I couldn't be bothered doing it very frequently. I find it pretty boring to do.

crystal_89
August 30th, 2008, 04:24 AM
If there was no damage, I would flat iron my hair everyday. All the way to classic. But that would be in an ideal world. In an ideal world I would have naturally straight hair, anyway :p

There is not option for me. No, I wouldn't heat style. I have never done so, I'm a low maintainance kind of person (at least when it comes to hairstyling ;)).

I still straighten my hair about once a month. I know it damages but I've go coarse, thick hair anyway and when it hasn't been straightened, it's in an oiled updo so I guess it's safe. Used to do it once or twice a week though!

GlassEyes
August 30th, 2008, 06:00 AM
I wouldn't.

Ignoring my mess of a thread in the mane forum, it just takes too long to straighten my hair. Plus, even if I do, it looks like crud and I always managed to burn myself with the flatiron. Always. I got a pretty bad burn the last time I did.

And blowdrying, no matter whether I used a brush to get it flat, or a diffuser to make it curly, always, ALWAYS made my hair frizzy.

I just can't be bothered. XD I'd rather just sit with messy curly hair, even if I DID look better with it styled.

The one kind of tool I actually would use is one that would take me down to a 3a or 2c. XD Without having to straighten first. That I could live with.

LHC has helped me embrace my waves so it's not so much about straightening these days (although I love the look my hairdresser can get with the blowdryer, I can't achieve it myself). However in winter, especially when I have to go outside, I would definitely blowdry (scrunch dry or diffuse, to maintain the waves) just to cut out the 5 hours or more of wet hair hanging round my face. I tried damp bunning but it just never dried.

I voted for cheese :D

When my hair was short and layered, I blow dryed alot to style it. Having longer hair is sooo much easier. I don't miss it at all, and I think my hair looks better.

I think I would probably flat iron my hair, and blow dry it more.

I voted cheese anyway. :P

I think I would use them sometimes. I would do it just to tame the frizzies on bad hair days. They can come in handy when styling.

tiny_teesha
August 30th, 2008, 07:23 AM
i voted straighten, though i kinda take it back, because if i play with my hair a lot when it is damp it almost looks straightened.
But i think i would curl if it didn't make my hair feel like straw (i did it once and i really burnt my hair...not smart) because curls add body. But that being said i can achieve that look too with a bun or pin curls, haha :)

I still wouldn't do anything every day. I'd be willing to do them for special occasions, though.

August 30th, 2008, 07:42 AM
You didn't have an "all of the above" option. I'd do it 2 or 3 times a week if it didn't damage my hair. I love blow dried, straightened hair with just the ends turned under with a large barrel curling iron. I used to do that but my hair would never grow past about 3" above waist. So now I treat my hair with TLC and just an occasional heat styling.

A waste of time, really. Besides, I am as clumsy as a girl can be with styling tools.

August 30th, 2008, 09:36 AM
Totally right now, yes. Later once I get longer? Probably not, I'd prefer to just braid it or put it in an updo but my hair tends to be very rebellious and messy at this length. I still often blow dry on COLD in the mornings...or sit in front of a fan for a while :silly:

MeMyselfandI

I voted for cheese.

I have curling irons, and various heated curlers. I have a hair dryer. I do not have the patience for any of them. I never have. I have spent hours curling my hair when I was a bride's maid. (I have on the odd occasion for a wedding or something major formal that I will curl my hair)
I can't see myself doing that on any regular schedule even with no heat damage.

I have used foam curlers. My all time favorite are rags. I think they give a great curl. My daughter's hair looks amazing when I use rags on her hair.

I still love wash and wear hair. I have spent much time in resent months pampering my hair to get it back into wash and wear hair. I am almost there.

NurseMama
August 30th, 2008, 11:50 AM
I put straighten with a blow dryer because there was no option for using the diffuser on a blow dryer. I would do that a heck of a lot more than the back breaking work that it takes to straighten my hair with a blow dryer.

prosperina
August 30th, 2008, 02:35 PM
I'd do a messy job of straight ironing my hair once or twice a year as opposed to never. I say messy job because my hair doesn't look good all uniformly straight. I'd keep some of the wave and just smooth it out. But only once or twice a year because even if there was no damage, I've still got better things to do than flat iron.

Finoriel
August 30th, 2008, 02:48 PM
No way! I actually like my hair structure and I´m way too busy to have time for blow drying for the sake of drying it "faster". Last time I did that was at about hiplength I guess and it took more than 30minutes... I don't want to think about how long it would take now.

ChloeDharma
August 30th, 2008, 02:50 PM
Oh if it was definately damage free then i'd blow dry it, then straighten with irons, then tongue the ends either to go under or for end-curls. I wouldn't do it every day, but i'd definately do it sometimes.....for dates i expect.
I do love the natural thing, but it would be nice to have more options, plus i love that sleek look.

ETA i tried voting for all 3 but i think it only allows one, so it came up as curling tongues. I should add that i do blow dry in winter sometimes if i have to go out soon after washing my hair......but on low heat, with a paddle brush, and slow too....and never to bone dry, i always leave some water in there. I don't think this is particularly damaging.

August 30th, 2008, 07:35 PM
It takes too long now, let alone when I reach my goal length. Using a curling iron would be nice to fix any squashed curl. But I really wouldn't want to spend the time attempting to blowdry and then flat-iron my hair; I can't do just one of them.

so I voted cheese. x]

Cheese for me.

I like my hair as low effort as possible so am more than happy using wet braiding to straighten and not having to do more than comb and bun everyday.

Sarahmoon
August 31st, 2008, 09:12 AM
Non of the above. My hair is straight, so no need to straighten as I like slight waves better for my hair than stick straight. And I think you can't obtain slight waves with a curling iron. Besides, that would take a lot more time than just sleeping with braided hair :D

If it did not damage my hair, I would use a curling iron often.
I use steam rollers now, form time to time. I like to make whirlies in my hair since I have very few naturally. Once in a while I like to make pretty updo's reminiscent of the 16-1800's. Those are hard to do without curls. :D

I have never really blow dried my hair or used straighteners etc but am considering starting straightening - only on my long fringe before anyone screams. I tend to keep a long fringe to have some hair round my face when i have the length tied back and as my fringe tends to grow pretty quick I dont see that it would hurt much in the long run - as anything I damage is likely to be cut out at some point. I'm just trying to find a heat protection spray that isnt nasty atm and even so it will probably only be done the day after I wash my hair - which is twice a week.

For the length of my hair I never used them even before i knew they were bad mainly for time consuming reasons. - lazyness :D

September 3rd, 2008, 06:01 AM
I'd possibly use straighteners a little more often than I do as I sometimes fancy a change of look. But mostly not - I love my curls.. I prefer the way my hair looks when dried naturally and I'm too lazy to spend time blow drying or straightening mostly anyway. I stopped using blow dryers about ten years ago - that it might be damaging never even crossed my mind.

None. I'm lactose intolerant. Sniff sniff. (the cheese dealeo)

I never really used my hair dryer before, and now?? Meh. I think I've used my flat iron once in the five years i've had it. Mostly for my bangs, anyhow.

ClareDee
September 3rd, 2008, 09:59 AM
All of the above, including cheesey option!

In particular the blowdrying and curling. The former for convenience and the latter for volume. My hair is quite fine and thin, and curling really does make it look much fuller. I feel a bit glamorous when it's in loose curls, too...
I'll just be taking the slower options from now on. waah.

September 3rd, 2008, 01:22 PM
I'd do it all if I could. Not every day mind you, but definitely to switch it up. Curling iron to have spirals, flat iron for straight, blow drier for volume. Too much hassel for daily use, but I'd be all over it for weekends and special occasions.:D

Buddaphlyy

I do it already, so I would continue to do it anyway. I flat iron about once every 2-3 months. My hair has never been damaged from heat.

September 3rd, 2008, 02:17 PM
I blow dry my hair maybe 4 times per year, and that's the most frequently I've ever done it. It's not just the hair damage that gets to me, but also the fact that it takes so long! I'd much rather let my hair air dry while I do fun things than sit under a blow-dryer for 20-30 minutes. I have no patience! ;)

Periwinkle
September 3rd, 2008, 03:15 PM
Before I joined LHC, I didn't much care about damage but didn't heat style through sheer laziness.

If I had the skill, the time and the inclination, then maybe. In real life, though, I'd still be too lazy!

Interesting that many of you think heat styling is just too time consuming...
for me a good blowdry on low heat takes 10 minutes, makes my hair much smoother and distributes wave better, and minimizes the amount of time i spends fussing/combing over it.

nappywomyn

If it wouldn't damage my hair, I would flat iron it, maybe a couple of times a year, just to have it straight for the day or so it would last.

Well, I never really have because it takes too much of an effort and my hair only holds curl for about half an hour.

Though I do let my hair get curled once every blue moon for the time being. Once being when my boyfriend's cousin wanted me to play model for her and she curled my hair up all nice, but that wasn't bad because we didn't need hair spray...
Not for my boyfriend's grad (I was his escort) his cousin had to put like 5 pounds of hairspray on for my hair to hold from 10:30am, till about midnight. lol So that was like torture for me, but from hours until the actual grad my hair needed to hold somehow.

I curl my fringe nearly every day with a curling iron so it has some volume and doesn't just hang there in my face, all stringy and flat. I'm growing it out, but not to meld into the rest of my hair, I just want it to be longer. Regular trims after I gain the length I am after will help to keep the dry ends at bay.

If I want curls in the rest of my hair, I have used spiral perm rods in slightly damp hair, then let them dry on their own, no heat. It's an all-day project, and it's easy to get the hair tangled in the rods, so I do it maybe only every five years or so.

I haven't blow-dried my hair since the early 1990's. Too much of a pain, even if it didn't damage my hair. As my hair is quite straight, it has never occurred to me to try flat-ironing.

I'm too lazy to blow dry (even if I'm just drying my curls instead of blowing them out), flat-iron is so hot it makes me sweat and undoes the work I already did straightening it (and just looks AWKWARD), and the curlign iron is rather pointless.

XD So probably not. But I'd let my friends mess with my hair more. To be honest, I used to want to flat-iron daily and have straight hair, but in reality, I'm just to bloody lazy. xD;

SimplyViki

I wouldn't - I'm just waaaayyyy to lazy. Which my roommate would roll her eyes at, because she's always catching me fiddling with my hair one way or another. But I really can't be bothered with blow drying or curling irons or straightening irons... they're just too much of a pain, and I'm clumsy and would probably burn myself anyway.

SimplyViki

That and I'm clueless on how to blow dry and make it look decent - I spent several hours doing my mom's hair and makeup for her wedding this past Christmas, and then wound up fifteen minutes before we were all supposed to start our little procession down the aisle or whatever, and my hair was still thrown up in a wet bun! I resorted to blow drying it so that it would at least be dry... BIG mistake. I cringe when I see pictures of my hair that day - nothing but fluff!

I would have straightend my hair about once a week as I used to do. But I have stopped that nonsense. No more flatiron and chemical dye.

I would never heat-style no matter how little damage it would cause my hair for I just love the look of natural hair. Once upon a time I found it hard to stop using my heated brush - that was a long time ago when having a particular hairstyle meant a lot to me.
Now I just want long, healthy hair that flows naturally down my back.

I would remain the same. I've never had an interest in heat styling.
Maybe I'd try curling it to see what would happen, but I really.. well, I can't think of any way to phrase it besides not having an interest.

I'll take my heat styled cheese, thanks. :D

Not because I like it better straight; I don't really. What I do like better is leaving the house with my hair all dry and 'done' for the day, instead of with drippy wurls.

I'd love to be able to have straight hair once in awhile. I've had it done twice at a salon, and it was such a nice feeling to have for a couple of days. My hair was all silky and well behaved. I hate blow dryers regardless of damage--can't stand that noise so close to my head--but it'd be nice to use a flat-iron damage-free.

I blow out, flat iron, and when I want to go curly I will use a curling iron on my hair right now! So of course if it was possible that heat styling was not so damaging to my hair I'd definitely do it even more so that I already do. I love when my hair is perfectly heat styled, it looks shinier when I do so. I voted for using my flat iron more often. I already iron my hair about 3 days every week. If it were somehow non-damaging to my hair, why I'd be flat ironing every 5 minutes I think! :cheese:

I didn't use heat styling much before, so I am unlikely to start. It has nothing to do with damage, it just always seemed like a waste of time, unless I have something fancy to go to. If I do, I just blowdry it for some volume.

I never use a flatiron anymore, simply because I don't want to damage my poor hair any more than it already has been. I do wish I could do it just once in a while, though-- I just want to see if it looks a little longer that way! :D

I think I would probably straighten it- even though I love curly hair it is too much hassle!

Now if you were to offer me damage free and instantaneous heatstyling I would really go for that!

I would flat iron my hair every day. But then again I'm lazy so I probably wouldn't heat style as much anyway.

I'd straighten like everyday and I'd LOVE IT
but if it didn't damage I wouldn't have to straighten because back when my hair was virgin and undamaged I only had to blow dry and it would be stick straight

I would use a blow dryer if it wasn't damaging. Not always because I want to make my hair look straight, but just because sometimes my hair doesn't dry over night in my cap and I'd like to goto school with dry hair.

I would add a few waves/curls to the straighter sections of my hair every morning to make it seem wavier overall... it would only take a few minutes... I'd love to do it :D
And I probably will do it sometimes once it is longer and in better condition. :)

Haven't heat styled my hair since high school because I am lazy and like the texture of my air dried hair just fine, so I voted cheese.

Even when I didn't care about the condition of my hair, I never once got all the way through blow-drying my hair without getting bored and quitting before it was dry. I have no patience.

I would use a curling iron. I love the look of curly hair. I wouldn't blowdry, though. My blowdryer always used to make my hair frizzy, and I'm fine with letting it air dry, even though it takes longer. I definitely wouldn't straighten; I guess I don't really understand the appeal in having stick-straight hair.

dernhelm
October 3rd, 2009, 04:35 PM
I'd maybe do the once a week blow-dry straight...but I would have to get it done at a salon. It would take me over an hour to straighten my own hair and my arms would fall off.

Cheese for me. Even without damage being a consideration, straightening my hair takes way too much time for me to ever want to do it more than once or twice a year.

I have no idea what jack cheese is (I hope it's without meat!!!) but I chose it anyway. I never heat-treated my hair and see no reason to begin with it. Even if it didn't damage the hair. My hair is nicest when it's air dried and natural. It's straight anyway, and if I want waves, I bun.

I chose melted pepperjack cheese.

I'm far too lazy to heat-style my hair. I never did even back when I thought I "should", including simple blow drying.

Also pepperjack sounds reeeeeeally good right about now. Yummy.

cheese for me :D . it's time consuming and it's lazier to accept and enjoy what you've naturally got .

October 5th, 2009, 11:18 AM
I would love to use a straightening iron because I can control the way my hair bends at the sides. I create curl mostly with it. But not anymore, I have found them to be way too damaging. Even on the lowest setting the heat of those things is freakishly high.

BranwenWolf
October 5th, 2009, 11:23 AM
No. It's a pain in the butt and I don't have the time. My hair never holds heat styling- it curls when I straighten it and straightens when I curl it. I also have fairly thick hair and foofing and teasing are just out of the question.

The most I have is a blow dryer for when it will get really cold and my hair is still wet (I let it dry overnight) just give it 5 minutes or so around the back of my head.

Runzel
October 5th, 2009, 11:50 AM
I would flat iron on occasion. Mainly because I remember (long, long ago) the feeling of hot hair...I loved that feeling! To have hot hair that was very long would feel so cozy, like a wearable electric blanket.

Anje
October 5th, 2009, 12:02 PM
Probably wouldn't do anything differently. I'm altogether too lazy to bother with heat styling most of the time, and gave away my hairdryer (primarily used to thaw windows so I could close them when they froze open in the winter) when I last moved, about 2.5 years ago.

Do flat irons work for making grilled cheese sandwiches?

JCFantasy23
October 5th, 2009, 05:18 PM
I heat style very, very rarely. This weekend I will be using a curling iron a little maybe, since I'm going away for the weekend and have a few parties to attend. Special occasions and all that, can't have the curls any other way with the time frame (going to be out all day). But no I wouldn't, I'm too lazy to work with heat styling on a regular basis. My hair doesnt dry right with a hair dryer, and it doesnt curl right for awhile with a curling iron...it just doesn't like heat products, if that is possible lol.

Merewen

Brighe
October 12th, 2009, 02:19 PM
I would neither straighten nor curl my hair even if it did no damage.
The reason is I´m really lazy styling my hair  .
I really love updos that last at least two days and I would never (except for some special occasion) spend hours just trying to change the texture of my hair...
Last but not least both curling and flat iron are very hot and I am all thumbs using hot items :?

Jezerellica
October 13th, 2009, 08:58 AM
For special occasions I would absolutely us the flatiron. Yes it takes forever, but I love the sleek look it gives my wavy hair. So that is my vote!

I spent so many years with a curling iron attached to my hand I will never go down that road again! Goodbye for good 80s hair!!!!! = )

No way--I'm too lazy. My hair has been blown dry maybe 5 times in the past 5 years, all of those for theater.

I once had a roommate who said that she would never marry anyone who spent more time in the bathroom than she. I told her it'd be hard to find someone who spent less than I, considering I'm in and out in the morning in 5 minutes if I'm not getting a shower, and the menfolks shave.:p

enfys
October 15th, 2009, 01:10 PM
I would. All of the above.

I'd blow dry it every time I washed unless the weather was nice and warm enough on a wash day to air dry outdoors. Washing twice a week that'd be...103 blowdries a year. I'd only straighten or curl it for special occassions, but still a few times a month. Heck, I'd even crimp!

If it didn't damage to heat style I'd probably cut my hair to between APL and BSL just so it was at it's optimum to heat style.
But it does damage so I won't. Stupid reality.

I used to love straightening my hair and I'm actually looking forward to doing it again as I'm getting my hair cut soon lol. From late 2005 till now I've tried to avoid using heat styling tools except for my fringe and special occasions, so it will be nice for a change :)

Lemur_Catta
October 16th, 2009, 01:21 PM
I would do it for special occasions, probably with a flatiron (my hair is almost straight, so it would be easier). And I would let my hair airdry less often, but that would not be "styling", just blow drying without the brush.

Kelsey89

I doubt it. Before hair boards I didn't know about "healthy" hair and I still didn't straighten more than once every few years. Once I realized wearing my hair kinky was a real option, I stopped getting my hair straightened because it was so painful.

If no damage resulted, and it would be much faster then I would use a curling iron. It takes so much time though, especially with this much hair now. Maybe hot rollers instead.

How often?

YES. I'd be a total curling-iron junkie!

... Though only if it also took less time to heat style than it does! XD

My hair does horrific things when I put a blowdrier anywhere near it, though, so I'll pass on that.

jenny'sdreaming
October 17th, 2009, 05:02 PM
If it didn't damage I would blow dry not to straighten, but to give it more bounce, it's plenty straight enough thank you! The curling iron would give a more desired style but I used to spend an hour curling my hair when I was in my teens and I have no desire to waste that much time every day again.

I am lazy too and use to never feel like straightening my hair or doing anything with it but due to the length, it looked better straightened and looked a mess without doing anything at all. So far I have managed to go without straightening for a few weeks now and only curling my bangs a little. I want to be free of the bondage of the heat styling. It will be so much easier once my hair is much longer.

If it didn't damage, I suppose I might pull out the straightener or curling iron for fun weekend or night events. However, I'm too impatient to do much of any kind of styling, let alone heat styling. I'm also not skilled enough, since I'm too impatient to learn, and too wary of hurting my hair, so it never turns out as nice as the damage I occasionally allow salons to inflict upon me.

That's a toughy!! I don't know because I sort of like having my own style of always having it up using a stick or hairfork, which not many blokes do yet (excluding those on here), but I have always wondered what it would be like if I straightened my hair properly. I only once tried straightening my hair when it was about 4 inches long, but now I am below nipple length (for an accurate way to describe it), it would be interesting to see how it looked. But I still prefer braid waves!!!

I voted for cheese!

I stopped most heat styling long before I came to LHC, but not for damage reasons....it was simply because my hair is stick straight and styles done with heat last all of 10 min.....

I do have an older than dirt blow dryer that I use on the cool setting if my hair needs to be dried more quickly, but I can't tell you the last time I did that. And, I have a smallish curling iron that I use on my fringe, if it needs it (it usually doesn't)......
