After my bleached hair has been cut off, I have realised I am not a dark blonde. I am an ashy brunette. We have a great thread for blonettes and I would want something for ashy brunettes too. Why not regular brunette thread? Because I think ash brown hair is a little bit more difficult to love than other shades of brown. It is ashy and brown and it is not even blonde or something that resembles chocolate. Do you know what I mean? Well, I need some inspiration to help me love my hair color. Sofar I only like it inside under strong lights because it looks dark blonde then (but that is just an illusion, I am sure of it now). So I am calling everyone with this particular hair color to let us know why you like it, why it is beautiful and how to make the best of it. Help yourself to the cookies too.

I am either the only one with this color or everybody loves it and doesn't know what I am talking about or everybody hates it :D or? Joking :). I will be fine it is just that no more bleach in my ends makes my hair look different and I didn't expect it. Let's just say that initial excitment is gone.

*comes in to represent, grabs a cookie and takes a seat.* :)

It's taken a while to get used to my hair color... especially with dyes making it common to have a more vibrant hair color. But it is what it is, and i'm learning to like it.

I've been watching Ally McBeal on Netflix lately, and I'd describe her hair color as ash brown. I think it must be the most unappreciated hair color out there.

I don't have ash brown hair, but I think it's really pretty. :) I think it's just such a soft color! I love it!

Hi! I'm a super ashy dark brown. Like it looks ultra grey in certain lights, like pencil lead. I hated my color so I hennaed, found I henna didn't look good so now I'm growing out by slate dark brown hair, that looks even ashier against the henna color.

I'm glad you made a thread for us. I feel like either there are very few of us, or our brethren out in the wild get no love and feel compelled to color. I don't know about you guys but I was born with light golden blonde hair that turned medium brown by the time a couple years old. When I hit puberty is was dark chocolate brown. And now in my early 20s it is dark drown and mega ashy.

Maybe someone could throw up some more ash brown role models for us, maybe some other inspiring stuff. I still have hard time loving my natural hair.

I think I belong here? Maybe? Maybe that is how you know you belong here, that you don't know... ;)
In most of my pictures my hair appear brown, but I think it's the warm lightning. Anyway, I have started to like it. When I was younger I hated it, and that is what made me dye it black for ten years or so! Finally I realised if I wanted long hair, I would have to stop dyeing.

Silly me, I always liked my ashy brown hair, although I might have taken it a bit for granted. Until I started going grey. Try finding a nice ashy brown out of a box- it's almost impossible for me. No matter what I tried, it always came out very warm, almost red. After 10 years of trying I gave up and started using henna/indigo. At least it is a healthy red. But if you have natural ash brown appreciate it while you can! It is finite.

I don't have ash brown hair but I think it's gorgeous. I'm a huge fan of cool ashy tones, maybe because they suit me so I can relate better to it (I'm an ash blonde), I don't know.

Not really sure if I belong in this or not. My hair is something that was blonde as a kid and then turned grey mouse... People used to describe it as brown I think, back before dyed it, but to me it just looks grey, just not the going grey kind of grey. I thought about the blonette thread but there's nothing really blonde about it anymore. I've been hennaing it for a long time but the orange isn't turning out precisely the way I would like it to, so I really have no idea anymore. I kind of want to grow it out but the roots look so awful. Bah.

I don't know if i belong here, my roots always look ashy but length often change to golden brown i think. I used deposit only colour and now it's all weird colours.

I used to have the same reaction as you about my hair color. But I like the simpleness of it now. Plus it really brings attention to my features, as now I have very light brown ashy hair, dark green eyes and a goldener type skin. Blonde hair, like I used to have just washed me out. I also like that in the sun the stands light up with gold reflects. Plus wen this colour grows long the ends lighten with sun damage to dark blonde. But I know what you mean, it took me a while to accept that I didn't have cool intense colour like black red or blonde! But recently I'm just loving my natural colour, especially with a few highlights added in

Oooh, this is my hair color and I love it- for the first three inches. After that the sun bleaches it to super brassy blonde by the ends, which I am not as fond of.

Medium ash brown here (see avatar). I'm afraid, on me, I cannot like it at all. If mine would bleach out naturally like sumidha's, I'd love it, but it jus stays one mass of grey/brown :/ So I henna, which I LOVE. I don't love my roots thogh, which despite having very little demarkation thanks to them being darker, do look slate grey against my red.

I tried to edit my post up there but the computer didn't want to... Here are my lovely ashy brown roots, which turn into a completely different color by the tips. It's actually kind of funny.

I'll trade!!!
I spent about 2 years trying to dye it ash brown but it will never go, it sometimes goes ash brown in the sun with red tints (i don't get it either with red and ash being opposites). I've given up now and am letting it grow out

Thanks! Though I must say I am very frustrated about my skin :D.

I swear that if I look at my hair from upclose, it looks warm colored. But if I look in a distant reflection, yup, ashy. Sometimes I think it is still in the lighter specter, other times...I don't.

Love this thread!
Here's are pics of what I consider to be definitely ash brown and not 'blonette'. I think some blonettes and some ash-browns (who try to convince themselves that they're some permutation of blonde) overreach when it comes to describing the difference between blonette and brown. The way I see it- if it is too dark to reach a level 10 blonde by relatively gentle peroxiding in one-step then it's not blonette.

I'd say they all are a dark ash blonde! It's my hair color (I was once told by a stylist it was dark ash blonde).

I'm in! I think. I have a light ashy brown natural color. I can't stand it. It looks grey in some lights, and in others it taken on a green hue similar to if it had chlorine in it. Urgh. In the picture the top color is my natural one. The bottoms are a bit redder from old dye. (By the way, is the albums feature work yet?) **Also, sorry the picture is so big**

Mine looks just like that as well, Xxanderia. :) Minus the red tips. ;) I have about 4 inches of natural color at the moment, and the rest is almost black.

Here's my natural roots (this photo was also posted in the growing out dye thread, along with one taken in the sun) :
http://i951.photobucket.com/albums/ad351/ashmey86/Hair/IMG_8768.jpg (http://s951.photobucket.com/user/ashmey86/media/Hair/IMG_8768.jpg.html)

I look back on old photos from before I dyed, and I really do love the color. I also like how it varies in different lighting. Sometimes it would look very dark, and then in the sun it would look to be verging on blonde. Very strange, indeed.

I was expecting to see level 7, but for me only the 3rd picture is. Some of them have (unnatural I think) highlights past their chin, so I was going by the color I saw above that.

For me the difference between true light brown hair and blonette is lack of richness. Brown hair even in its ash form is a much richer color than dark blonde. A lot of people would want to call this brown (http://www2.pictures.stylebistro.com/it/Nicole+Miller+Fall+2012+Backstage+mwoplj1KXL_l.jpg ) because there's no yellowness, it's fairly dark, and it pretty much matches her taupe jacket. But for me, the biggest thing that stands out about it is it's lacking in depth of color. This (http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/38/69/79/38697983549f8ab1bac245e8b9148cae.jpg) is a true light, rich brown color.

So great to see everyone's pictures. looking at them thought I think my hair almost might be to dark to qualify? Its about a level 3...just devoid of golden or reddish warmth, it does go light golden brown if it gets sun bleached.... My avatar is fully hennaed btw.

I don't mind if some ash-browns try to convince themselves they are some permutaiton of blonde as you put it. They might spend most of their time in light settings where their hair looks dark as blonde. So who is to say they are not some permutation of blonde if that is how they themselves and others see them most of the time? Perhaps they feel good with their "blonde" hair. I am not one to take that away from them.

But me, I want to be able to celebrate my color at its darkest. At the times when I don't see it as light. It is easy under strong lights, sun etc...not so much in a dark room though.

My hair is naturally ash brown, but my ends (from midback or so) are hennaed red. I re-embraced my naural color only because I'm tired of playing keep-up with henna. My roots looked positively grey against the red between hennaing. I don't neccessarily dislike the color, I merely liked red better.

Can someone explain the levels that are being discussed?

Springlets
June 11th, 2013, 07:34 AM
Hair color levels are basically how light or dark your hair is. The scale goes from 1 to 10, 1 being the darkest (black) and 10 being the lightest (platinum). Most hair color boxes use this system so you'll see things like 7G or 4A on the box.

Here (http://www.hairfad.com/images/hair-color-levels.png) is a chart showing the different levels. On the right side, it shows the different underlying pigments that are brought out when bleached (thus it's quite important for hairstylists to know this stuff). If yellow pigment is pulled, it's blonde; orange is brown; red is dark brown/black.

And here's (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=79074) a thread I made about it.

Hm, interesting definition regarding bleaching, though I'm inclined to disagree. As for those pictures, most, if not all of them, are very borderline, which is kind of a key feature of blonette hair. If these appear brown to you, though, what would you consider “true blonette"?

I'm not an ash brown...but due to letting the gray come in naturally, in some lightings the salt n pepper areas of my head look ash brown. I'm trying to like that part, but I wasn't happy with it at first as it is quite surprising when I see it and not at all what color I was originally.

I think I am ashy dark blonde (level 7) or I say blondette but I feel like I almost belong here too. I like ashy tones in hair and I think people want them more nowadays. There is so much models with ashy toned hair! I think ashy hair looks kind of sophiticated espesially in up dos and I kind of like how it behaves almost like it's a bit transparent. I mean how it looks very different in different lights. I also like how it's like natural. There is a lot of animals that have ashy toned fur. I like to have hair that's like wild animals' fur. It's not just mouse. It can be wolf too. ;)

I have heard a lot of negative comments of my hair colour. We ashy haired people should be happy what we have. So many others dye their hair that undyed ashy hair is unique. Grey is a beautiful colour too. People should not fear grey hair so much in my opinion.

It would be nice if we could get some examples of dark or medium ash brown. I was under the impression ash would only show on lighter hair and it is exciting to hear that is not the case. Where I live I think majority of the people have lighter ash brown hair (although you can't see it most of the time because people dye it) so I thouhg ash brown was actually just one color. This thread proved me wrong.

I'm an ash something or other. It looks darker in the winter but my natural highlighs are definately blond. Still ash blonde, but blonde. Meh. I like it.

In winter, natural light:

I'm very cool skintoned. One of the unfortunate ones who have no colour in their cheeks at all as well, I envy the pink cheeked crowd! My eyes are light blue/grey (like campfire smoke I've been told lol). I'm a summer if that helps?

Hi everyone! Sorry I've been away writing exams :(

I feel like I may have come across a little harsh in my original message- I'd just like to apologise to anyone who may have felt a little annoyed by what I wrote.

To answer a question earlier in the thread, this is how I understand the difference between (1) blonette and (2) ash brown:
(1) http://www.allure.com/images/hair-ideas/2012/08/blondes-taylor-swift-bronde.jpg AND http://pinterest.com/pin/59250551318915085/ (the darker top part) AND http://pinterest.com/pin/354095589422188965/
(2) http://pinterest.com/pin/498984833684486471/

But in all honestly I don't entirely understand what 'blonette' is supposed to mean. I found a definition online which describes it as having an equal amount of brown and blonde highlights...

I have the same skin tone... definitely yellow or olive, but I am pale (I try to avoid the sun whenever possible.) When I had a full head of my natural color, I did not think it clashed with my skin tone.

My baby girl is an ash brown!

I LOOOOOOVE her hair color, in the sun it gets so light and gets such pretty blonde highlights naturally, not orange at all!

She gets A LOT of compliments on her hair. Be proud of that head of ashy hair! It's so dimensional and updos look amazing on her.

My daughter has pink cheeks to go with it while I'm a winter (cool tones). She looks amazing on pinks and pastels.

I'm actually 1b or 1c. Sorry about the depict picture. Most of the time I go with braids, so I have this fake 2a\2b texture. I see my real hair texture just after wash days for a couple of hours, then I braid it again...

My hair routine:
I wash my hair twice a week. I use the CWC method- I condish the length focusing on the ends. then I shamoo my roots. Recently I started to dilute my shampoo with water so it will be more gentle to the scalp. All this humidity isn't good for skin of any kind...
Then I wash it. After that I put conditioner of deep conditioner on my length (I deep condish once a week). While the conditioner on my hair I start to gently fingercomb my hair. I find it very helpful for the detangeling later.
After the wash I lightly oil my hair with some serum (a mix of some essential oils). Then I comb my hair with wide tooth comb. I actually comb my hair only in wash days, twice a week. I finger comb in the rest.

here is my real hair texture:

I have light ash brown hair. It was blonde when I was little. I always thought it was a boring color, so I dyed it red with henna. But after a year of that, I missed my natural hair color!
Besides, it felt a bit weird for me to have red hair, and I hated touching up my roots. Dying my hair made me feel like a fake, too.
Not long after that, due to curiosity--as well as people telling me short hair looks better on me--I buzzed almost all of my hair off in the bathroom. I really didn't like having a buzz cut and still want long hair, but at least all the red is gone now! I'm just never going to take other people's opinions so seriously ever again. shudder:
Ash brown hair is really pretty. I'm amazed now that I thought it was boring. Every hair color is pretty, really. :blossom:

I think I belong in here, though I'll confess, I am getting a fair amount of grey in there as well over the past few years. Very little red or gold in my hair color, except at the very ends where it's old. It's not my favorite color, but I think it goes well with my coloring (cool pink skin, blue-grey-green eyes), so I'm not complaining.

Ash brown with blue-green eyes- sounds really beautiful color complex...

I think that the problem with this color is his name. It sounds boring. If you call it cool brown (for the cooler shades of it) of coffee brown it will be much more appalling color. It's all about marketing :D

The strange thing about it is that the color changes depending on the lighting. In sunlight it looks like it has a kinda blonde tint. Then indoors it looks grey-brown. Under fluorescent light it can look almost red. I used to hate it and thought I looked like the biggest plane jane ever. I have since dyed and bleached it many colors but am growing it back out. So far I have a half inch of roots. I never see anybody with this color because I'm fairly sure they dye as well. I guess it just means we are a rarity. :D

Not an ash-brown here, but chiming in to say that I've always thought there was something very pretty and delicate about the color, especially the grey-brown "driftwood" (as FrozenBritannia called it) tone. Most people around me with this color seem to dye it away to something brighter or warmer, so it always really catches my eye when I see a full head of ash-brown hair.

I love this! It's true, there's a lot of pressure to have "rich, chocolate" brown hair, and ash brown is considered dull, mousy, and boring. It's only recently that I began to like my natural medium ashy brown color. Good thread! :)

DarkSunny, that's a perfectly beautiful thing to read. Thank you so much.

:) Any time. I think there seems to be this general trend toward dying hair in warmer tones, even though cooler tones are just as beautiful. Ash brown hair might not be as bright and immediately attention grabbing as some other colors, but it has a subtle and delicate beauty to it (like an antique photograph with lightly painted-in details instead of a contemporary bright and saturated one). I think a lot of people see darker and cooler toned roots coming in (often contrasting sharply with a bright and warm-toned dye color) and worry it looks dull, without realizing just how pretty and multidimensional it will look like when all grown out or outside in natural light.

I think my virgin colour is ash brown. At first, I thought it was blonette, as it looks lighter in the sun, but really it's a deeper colour. I dyed, bleached, highlighted and hennaed it for a couple of decades, as I thought it looked too boring, mousy, almost grey. But now I love my virgin growth, and can't wait to grow out all the lightened henna!

Anyway, my hair colour looks different depending on the light/sun levels. Also, the top of my head is much lighter than the back and the nape. My siggy and the first pic here were taken on the same day, outdoors. The braided pic is just to show the contrast with the henna and Elumen reds still in my length, but also the darker nape colour.

Hello!

I would like to share my growing-out-henna-to-have-my-ash-brown-hair-back progress! :) I haven't seen my natural colour in a long time! And I really like the colour!

Basically, the bottom third of my hair is processed, in 2011 I had dark brown hair (LOVED that colour so much...) and later had box dyed cool cherry red. Then I was dying with henna in 2012. In February 2013 I stopped using henna.

Although I think that growing out a warm tone when your hair colour is cool is really difficult and looks so OBVIOUS I kind of like where my natural hair colour and the henna meet and blend together, it looks really interesting. Let me show you some pictures, I hope you can appreciate it :)

Man, why does this thread appearsright after I started hennaing?

I'm an ashy brunnete (although my ends get golden from sun bleaching) and I really like the color too. I don't henna because I dislike the ashy color, I just wanted a change, the fact that I like my natural color is one of the reasons it took me about 7 or 8 months before I decided to do it, and on the day I want my color back, I'll get a red ombré like stachelbeere (braids looks awesome on multicolored hair!) or jel (great hair by the way) ^-^ Here's my natural color:

HylianGirl - oh wow, I really love your natural hair colour! It matches your skin tone so well! I hope you like henna on your hair, it's a great adventure :)

I'm glad you were able to appreciate and enjoy your natural hair - to be honest, I always thought ash brown is boring and too light for me - I always preferred myself with darker brown hair.
But once the henna started growing out I learned to appreciate and like my 'unique' hair colour. Unique as in... most people I know dye their ash brown hair a different colour because they think it's not 'defined' enough, they either go lighter or darker.
My 'new' hair grows on me pretty much every day. When I was taking the pictures I posted today I was surprised how pretty it looks. I think I rediscovered something amazing :)

Ash brown is the new blonette hehe :D

Checking in here!
My hair is ash brown, the kind that looks like a nice golden in the sunlight, and then grey in normal light. I have pictures of me where my hair literally looks like dust. I used to henna a lot and was thinking of getting back to it to achieve some shine and character, but decided to keep my dull color and try cassia first.

I live in the Middle East now where most people have very dark hair and my color goes over very well over there. It is more appreciated and referred to as "blonde", even though I am definitely not blonde...

By the way, my hair is highlighted in my profile and siggie pics.

Stachelbeere- Your color is breathtaking. I only hope that I can grow out as beautifully as you have.

So...do I belong here too?
Some colors are so hard to pinpoint.
I am growing out old dye but my natural color can be seen from my hairline back to the quite plain headband (lazy day) in the photo below. This is the most that I have seen of my actual hair color in years and I'm not quite sure what to call it. I always figured that it was darker than it's appearing due to my very dark brows and lashes but the blond-ish baby hairs are throwing me for a loop.

hello to alyanna, zirena and hannabiss :flower:

I didn't know that ash brown could be called 'blonde' by anyone - but I can imagine that this could be the case if you're surrounded by super dark-haired people...

zirena, maybe you could ask someone who is skilled in taking pictures to take macro photos of your hair so you could see how you like it? Or if you are skilled enough, take some yourself.
I sort of didn't have an opinion about ash brown until I took the pictures above. I also photoshopped the henna out of my hair on one of my pics and realized how surprisingly better it looked with my skin tone and eye colour :O

Stachelbeere- Your color is breathtaking. I only hope that I can grow out as beautifully as you have.

So...do I belong here too?
Some colors are so hard to pinpoint.

OMG... noone ever told me that my hair colour is breathtaking, thank you so much, I feel super flattered :D some credit goes to my camera though :o
you know what - I think you belong here. your hair is definitely a light, cool brown tone. I know what you mean with having lighter strands of baby hairs and dark brows and lashes - because so have I. In my experience the lighter baby hairs usually have a short terminal length; the ones that grow longer form highlights. sooo... welcome :D you seem to have reaaally thick hair by the way :D

Thank you stachelbeere ^-^ your color is very preety too!

So is your blace, although it will probably show more when your roots get longer

alyanna my ends definatelly were dark blonde, specially when the light hit it the right way, it's kinda strange how an ashy color has golden tones in it, isn't it? xD

I actually once had a hairdresser tell me that I am a blonde, nothing agaisnt blondes, but don't see myself as one x.x then again, natural blondes aren't that common where I live, so maybe it's that....

Hi Everyone, just wanted to stop in a share the Ash Brown pride. I always considered myself just light brown, but I definitely lean to the cooler side of light brown.
This picture is from December. I have since grown out/ cut out the asymmetric bob and ombre. I'm all virgin shoulder length hair now.

posting an 'inspirational' video of a youtube hair guru whose natural hair colour used to be this amazing ash brown.

Even though she's been using so much heat on her hair in the past year (and dyed it brunette, now she went blonde I think) she's still kind of my inspiration. I never thought that I could pull long hair off with my face shape but then I discovered her (she has a very similar face shape to mine). she taught me a lot about framing the face. and she has fine hair! I didn't realize it was ash brown until I checked her old video. and I miss her old hair colour. wasn't it gorgeous???

Google Kim Sears for gorgeous ash brown hair!

My color is ash too. I have silvery blonde highlights balayaged in. You would not believe how incredibly difficult it is to get colorists to keep to ash tones. They always want to "warm you up" a little. Once you have red in your hair, it's extremely difficult to get rid of. :(

May I join? I'm new, and I'd say I'm an 'ash brunette', which is a nice term for a hair colour I've struggled to grow to love!! It's still short right now but when it was waist-length I did quite like the different tones I would get in it.

It's true! I dyed my hair pretty much constantly from about 14 to 25 (every colour under the sun) and it was only when I finally grew out my own colour that I realised it had so much more depth and variation than anything I'd found in a salon or a supermarket. Ash brown pride! LOL

You have beautiful hair btw :) Everyone here does.

All I can say is that I am jealous of all of you who have their beautiful ash brown hair; I had been colouring my hair for years until I decided to go back to my natural colour, which is a medium ash brown; I tried finding a dye to match the rest of my hair to that colour and then grow it out, but it was pretty much impossible. Also I didn't want to put my hair through any more colour stress, so I decided to just wait for it to grow out :P Here's some progress pictures (these were taken 1 minute apart, don't know why the colours are different)

I am feeling a little guilty because at the beach a few weeks ago I did something I haven't done in years. I let some sun touch my hair. It is lighter now and it was so easy. Somewhere between blonette and light ash brown. Perhaps very light ash brown. But why do I feel guilty? Do you always have to cover your hair for it to be natural? Did cavewomen cover their hair? I don't see any damage and my hair can go without conditioner pretty easily. Perhaps this is what our hair color is supposed to be like? A little tiny bit sun kissed? Perhaps the damage warning goes to darker hair and excessive sun exposure?

@juliaxena, I agree with you, don't feel guilty :) a bit of a sun kissed look is beautiful, some lighter strands that give a bit of depth to your hair colour. I think cave women had other things to worry about, not spending hours on weaving little hair-cloths to protect their hair from sun damage...

Great progress, Tattersail! You'll have grown out more before you know it :)

Juliaxena I wouldn't worry about it. Sun kissing looks beautiful and if your hair still feels healthy to you, that's all that matters! I can't wait to get a few natural highlights when I go on holiday :D I'll be avoiding chlorine and salt, but not the sun! I usually spray a few pumps of protective mist onto my hair if I'm going to be in the sun for a very long time, but I think the sun's natural lightening effect looks lovely!

Exactly, and did anyone call their hair non virgin? LOL :D. I think some sun fading is natural, especially for lighter haired people and should not be classed as damage. If they have little pigment that gets destroyed to begin with... Really, I see no damage.

I've never known what color to call my hair until I started following this post! I've noticed that as soon as spring comes and I'm working outside a lot, the new growth hair slowly goes from a dull blueish-grey to glossy and colorful shades of honey. (I never let my hair get wet in a chlorine pool, however!) I will post a picture I took this week. I've never dyed or permed my hair. I agree that sun is a small thing to worry about. In fact I think the sun loves our hair color and brings it to life! BTW I'm new here and am wondering....is my hair classic length yet or is it just stuck somewhere past TBL? http://i1273.photobucket.com/albums/y404/BrindledBabe/August2013429_zps8d741c94.jpg

Nesoi Such beacutifull waves! *thud*

Tattersail sometimes minor lighting differences can cause a color diference in pictures, but your hair color is very nice ^-^

juliaxena My hair bleachs very easilt from the sun, the top part of my hair is ligher/more golden because of that, so are my ends, but I like that effect, makes it look like a natural hair color, unlike those dyed colors that look the same all over, not as artificial as bleached highlights (I'm yet to see someone with artificial highlights that look natural). I also don't consider it damage.

I started highlighting my hair when I was 13, because people kept saying I was dirty blonde. I always took it as an insult, like something was wrong with the color.
My siggy still looks like I'm goldish blonde, but my roots are at my cheekbones. I'll take a pix soon for this thread:)

Natural ash brown here! You know, I never really cared for it until recently. Losing your hair kind of tends to change your perspective on everything, hahaha. The last time I remember being fully my natural color was probably when I was thirteen, so it'll be really interesting to watch it grow out in all of its ashy splendor. :cloud9:

Here is a pic, around three years old, when I first decided that I would grow it out. You can see the natural two inches or so of roots I have there. I ended up dying it again, won't be doing that this time around.

A woman told me that she dyes her hair with sage. I didn't know her, but she was plenty old enough to have had gray hair. The color, though, was a slate color. You might want to experiment with sage rinses, maybe sage and tea if the straight sage is not warm enough.

Yeah lighting does make a big difference. I think the 'true' colour is the colour you can see in full sunlight- otherwise there are too many variables (type of lighting, shade of lighting etc) acting on the colour.

hello :)
bumping this thread a little to post my recent growning-out-the-henna updates. I kind of wanted to simulate my ash brown on the whole length so I did some photoshop colouring as well.
what do you think? Also, I was having some doubts if I'm actually a blonette; I have very translucent hair, I noticed, but then again it's fine hair - so by definition it's going to be translucent. I also have rather thick dark eyebrows, so - I'm not too sure what I am :/ I feel more like a brunette, whatever that means.

I can imagine that my hair will not have this even a colour - I'm sure there will be some natural highlights and lowlights as well - I mean hair gets naturally lighter by the sun, right?

EDIT: I don't get why photobucket suddenly decides to change the links I put on the evening before...? Here the photos are. again. gah.

Oh no! Please love your hair color! It's such a beautiful hair color. You underestimate your hair color. You may not realize it but your hair, it's...it's...it's like a hidden hair rainbow!:skittles::laugh:. No really...your hair has so many various colors, that well, maybe it's not always apparent, but your hair becomes absolutely radiant when the sunlight hits it. It wants to be seen in it's dazzling glory, to be appreciated as a color. Haha, I went a tad bit overboard in my description, but I'm just really passionate about this hair color and it has so many reasons to be appreciated. Your hair color is rare now a days, if you think about it. Everyone around you is dyeing their hair colors that tend to be just one shade, usually a warm tone. So you stand out for having hair that is cool toned! Plus, that's not something you can get out of a dye. Dyes always have warm undertones to them no matter what color you pick. So those who aren't blessed (yes, I say blessed lol) with your ash brown hair color will never be able to achieve that cool color. So your hair color isn't something you can buy from a store. Your hair has many colors in its strands. I'm sure you've noticed that the sun brings out a golden tone that seems to sparkle and shimmer:D. And in darker settings, a sort of grey-purple or reddish color is cast on your hair. So your hair likes to be a chameleon, hence why I called your hair color a hair rainbow tee hee. Your hair color has such a broad range that you haven't seemed to have noticed:(. It deserves to be appreciated. And if you've noticed, other hair colors don't seem to have that broad of a range. Take blonde hair for example: the sun may bring out the golden undertones, but can it really cast a red appearance when it wants to? Nope. Now I'm not condoning blonde as a hair color, or any hair color for that matter (I think all hair colors are beautiful:D) but blonde is limited in that aspect. Your ash brown may appear boring to you (it's totally not!) but your hair just hides it's true colors (pun intended? hee hee). Your hair is just humble hee hee. But don't underestimate it. Come the right moment (or right lighting, I should say) your hair will not shrink away from the opportunity of shining a brilliant, deep and bold color. I have ash brown hair, just so you know. Haha I'm sure you probably got the hint too, with my adamant description. And if you couldn't already tell, I do love my hair color:inlove:. I guess I've always liked my hair color, but I still went through a phase of experimentation with dyes. After all, dyes are like a hair's form of clothes...and who doesn't like playing dress up once in a while? But that experimentation ended up being a disaster. Fried hair, anyone? Yeah, I cringe just thinking about the abuse I had put my poor hair through. So I've definitely come to appreciate my natural hair color as it is after that. Plus it's complements me the best. I have neutral-toned pale skin and blue-green eyes. So the ash brown really brings out my eyes and complements my skin. I think ash brown is kind of exotic too, in a way. But anyways, enough rambling. I'll show you some pictures of my hair. I had the right lighting so you can really see it's ashyness (I know it's not a word, sigh). Plus I feel like the picture shows my hair true to it's color. My hair tends to have different hues in different lighting, so it's hard to capture it right. My hair is a level 4 medium brown, I'd say. I secretly wish it was a level darker, just cause darker hair looks more exotic to me. But I still love my hair as it is. Anyhow, here goes:

Darling_naiveté you have really really beautiful hair!! It looks so dark in the first picture. I also secretly wish for darker, cool hair. in the past I used to colour my hair dark chocolate brown and loved how intense the colour was but was also annoyed that there was an undesirable red tint to it, no matter how many box dyes I tried I would always get the red tint. Fast forward to now; I finally find out that my hair has cool tint to begin with...and I love it so much now, I can't wait for it grow longer <3

and it's true what you say, ash brown is an obsolete colour - the ones who cannot appreciate it dye it a more 'intense' colour - I mean it's right on the border between light and dark (at least in my case it is) and you can either go darker or lighter, in my case it was always darker that I went. Ash brown is probably not 'obviously' stunning enough (it doesn't 'pop') like platinum blonde or a colour like jet black but the... 'shyness' of this colour makes it so beautiful. it sort of grows on you...

My 2nd step to embracing my natural colour was meeting up with a friend of mine some time ago that I haven't seen in months. When I saw her hair I was in awe... she had the coolest ashy hair I've ever seen, sort of like a grey (but obviously not grey!) it was shiny, healthy looking and so stunning. She mentioned that she was considering dying it but I told her not to because her colour was so amazing. I wonder if she did, I hope not :/

Why thank you very much! It genuinely warms my heart to be complimented on my hair :o. I truly do mean it. And, may I add, you are the first person at LHC to compliment my hair! So that definitely made me happy:). But I have to say, you have such beautiful hair yourself. I was looking through the pictures of your hair you posted. I am always eager to compliment those with ash brown hair because I have that color and I love it so much! Your hair is growing out so nicely too. I'm so glad you've come to love your hair. I want to encourage you keep on loving that gorgeous color. Because it makes me so sad to see girls dye those ash brown tresses. I hope your friend didn't succumb to the temptation of dyeing her hair, either. What you said about the chocolate brown hair color--I've tried to achieve the same color with my hair, and to no avail of course. I could never get my hair to have that true cool chocolatey color without it having the red undertone. It bothered me because while I like red tones (actually, I LOVE red hair, particularly that fiery ginger color--mmm I love that color too much, I've sort of become crazy about it . So much so that when I see a "ginger" haired person in public, I cannot help but stare at their hair. I just admire it so much. Ho hum...I guess I've always had an interest in hair so I can get pretty passionate about certain colors.) red tones never suited my complexion. Well, not that it doesn't suit me, it's just that other tones flattered me more. But I've always liked a true chocolate tone :chocolate:. It just so beautiful and...yummy. Oh dear haha, I think it's time for me to eat breakfast:pinktongue:. Oh we'll, I guess achieving a chocolate hair color will never be the case for me. But I am quite fine with that. I very much like my own hair anyway. Although, my friend badgers me a bit about dyeing my hair a chocolate brown. She thinks that I would look good with that hair color. I think so too, hence why I have had the desire to. But I told her that I like my hair color as it is and I just want to grow out my virgin hair to about waist length. And I told her that after that, I might be open to dyeing it a different color again. Haha truth be told, I don't think that even then I would dye my hair again! I just couldn't tear her hopes down :pinktongue: eheheh. But right now I am getting so frustrated with my hair. I mean, my hair I growing out so nicely, it's just those nasty, yucky, bleached ends that make me frustrated. I don't know if you've noticed them in the pictures, but those were definitely not my real hair color. I just really want to cut them off! But I've made myself a promise that when my hair reaches waist length, will I finally trim those ends. So that won't happen until July. And besides, I think I'd probably regret it anyway. I really like how long my hair is getting, it feels so good!:D Anyways I've blabbed a bit too much. I've had a few questions for you though. What level do you classify your hair color? I feel like your's is quite similar to mine so I'm quite curious. Mines is a level 4. I sort of wished my hair was a three, because like I said, I like darker hair. My younger sister actually has darker hair than me. I classified her's as a three. It makes me a tad bit envious of her hair. She has such a lovely dark hair color. But I'm jealous in a good way. I just admire her hair. It's beautiful. Also, I wanted to ask you--how long do you want to grow your hair to? I hope your hair growing process goes well.

My natural color is ash light brown. There are no warm tones in it at all. I don't count though because I dye mine :) But I wanted to let everyone know that ash brown really is a beautiful color. I love cool tones.

Why thank you very much! It genuinely warms my heart to be complimented on my hair. I truly do mean it. And, may I add, you are the first person at LHC to compliment my hair! So that definitely made me happy.

Oh dear haha, I think it's time for me to eat breakfast.

Darling_naiveté you're welcome!! your hair looks so awesome in all kinds of different lights and...First! on the complimenting hehe [youtube comment reference :P]
and thank you for the hair compliment, I don't get too many these days - which doesn't mean that my hair doesn't look good!
I saw my grandma yesterday and she reminded me how she said years ago that I shouldn't have dyed my hair in the past, I guess she was right after all, it was damaging and this is one of the reasons why my hair never got long. My grandma said that I used to have really dense hair - well I am a solid ii with a lot of baby hairs so there is hope that my hair will be much thicker, fingers crossed. well there is this thread on TLHC about thickness dysmorphia and hair anorexia so I believe that my hair might have been this way all along and it just seems thick to her. and I think I do have a lot of fine hair but put together I don't get a huge braid - but anyway this is not the appropriate thread, it's not about the thickness - so back to the colour!

I love it! and there is nothing that will convince me to alter it in any way now, I really want to see what it'll look like when I have a whole head of virgin hair but that will take a while as I don't intend to cut the henna. I'm also glad that it's light enough to experiment with crazy colours in the future when my hair reaches BSL/ MBL. I think every colour can look stunning - especially when the hair is well-maintained and healthy. When it comes to darkening the hair - if I ever feel like it in the future I might be tempted to darken it with rinses - such as coffee rinses. if I really wanted to get it dark I would do so with a toner that would wash off easily. but never ever again a box dye for me, it's just not worth it. and never ever a hairdresser to dye my hair... no no.

about your bleached ends - I didn't notice them! but if they seriously bother them you could use a toner to just slightly darken your hair. Or dip dye them! if I had any bleached hair I would definitely do that! if fact, one of my goals is this look:

http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lfnl1tbxr81qccrklo1_400.jpg

...for when I hit BSL/ MBL. If I still feel like it...

about your Qs for me:

- not sure about what level my hair is - according to this scale (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=79074) it's in the range of the 5, 6, 7 levels - the individual strands are not pigmented at all to be honest, they are light and almost translucent and I read that this has an impact on the leveling as well. I'm definitely not a blonde and put together my hair gets ashy - so sometimes I wonder if I'm a blonette...? I guess time will tell. I have big fat dark eyebrows and I never classified myself as a blonde sooo... let's see how it grows :D

- my goal is MBL/ WL. I never had long hair, in fact this is the longest my hair has ever been so I don't want to set goals that are too 'far' away, I'm testing new grounds. I thought that my hair just doesn't grow when all along I was causing mechanical damage and was blissfully unaware of it. so for now - BSL, then WL. My hair grows rather averagely as well, 1/2 inch per month.

so what are your goals? and your hair story? :)

EDIT: see? brunette eyebrows? :D

Hey gang,

I'm just back from a holiday in Spain, and before I went we were talking here about whether or not to let our ash brown hair get kissed by the sun. I stay in the shade most of the time as I'm fair-skinned, but on my return I was pleased to see that the sun had brought out the natural 'rainbow' that is unique to our hair colour!

My hair is in a very annoying, length-eating stage of waving in a completely inconsistent, drunken fashion at the moment, but it means you can see the difference between the bottom layer, the coolest ash brown, and the top part which got a little sun:

And then when it's tied up (it's long enough to twist and clip! SCREAM) the colour variations really bring out the style!

I think this is one of the nicest things about our hair colour. Mousy? Never! ;D

Ah, that's just the sun'a highlights talking ;) Usually it is darker, like the bottom layer. It also seems to get darker as it gets longer, for reasons I've never understood. When it was waist-length it was really quite dark brown! Oh, hair. You are a mystery.

Hello, everyone!

I have been dying my hair red for about 4 years and recently decided to grow out my ash brown hair. I've got 2-ish inches of roots, but I'm starting to get concerned about just how ashy it is. I just don't remember it being this blue toned! Did any of you who grew their color out (or are farther along in the process than me) notice their roots were extremely ashy? Did the color mellow out as you grew it longer? I'm assuming half the problem is the contrast between my warmer color and cooler roots

My hair is blonde but I wanted to say that I think that ash brown hair is beautiful. This color is very unique and rare because people who have dye over it for some reason, probably because all of the stupid hair dye commercials claim that ash brown is "mousy" or "dull". :nono:

I would actually classify my hair as mousy. lol It's not dull though! I like the color and my white streaks of silver make it that much more awesome. A few months ago, I was actually grieving the thought of never having the darkest brown hair color in a bottle (I've been having pretty significant reactions from it that I was ignoring... stupid me). I liked how it looked with my blue eyes. But as my hair keeps growing in virgin from my pixie, it really suits me and my blue eyes still stand out. One thing is for sure... you can not get this color in a bottle! It's home grown!

I was so busy hating my curls for most of my life, I had no idea it is a usually disliked color. :(
I'm ash brown, with some greys now here and there. Trying to accept the lot : the curls, the grey hairs...

Boring or not, I do think it's a color that suits my cool pale skin and grey-hazel eyes, henna didn't suit me so much (even though the color itself was very pretty). Same for some others that I find the cool tone of ash brown hair suits them very well. I'm happy to have all virgin hair now, 3 years after finding LHC, growing out my damage caring better for my hair. Never focused much on the color. I sort of had this idea that my own healthy hair was probably the most beautiful for me.

(Hopefully now I'll stop cutting it so much now and actually get it to GROW !) :D

Oh, I know EXACTLY what it's like. My hair is a lead colour, so a very cool ash brown, blue toned as you describe it. And I'm growing out Henna... I think it's the hardest colour to grow out because the difference is so obvious and awkward.

so at first it was rather very awkward. But now, after about 10 months of having stopped using henna my hair has gradually evened out (the virgin part is at about ear length), and there is a very smooth transition between my ashy roots and the rest of the growth probably because of the many henna applications I did. I have to say I love it, it looks really nice and unusual

I started appreciating my own hair colour after I realised that I actually HAVE the colour I always wanted to achieve - which is a cool, dark brown shade. With box dyes you never get a cool brown tone, it always shimmers red which I highly disliked. Well, my own colour is not dark but very cool. Henna is no fun growing out but the colour difference is really not as obvious as you might think, especially when you wear your hair down, a ponytail or a braid. The hairstyle that emphasises the difference in tones are french braids, they do not look nice at all I think...

we will get our hair colour back at some point with patience :)

Unfortunately, I've taken to dying my hair dark brown because the distinction between my light brown hair and my dark red ends was too much for me to handle. So I went dark brown in an effort to make my hair all one color, which is working. I'm using demi permanent dye so that my hair isn't lightened by peroxide any. And it will eventually fade.

I might belong here. My hair is sometimes quite ashy looking - it often looks cool. Other times, though, it gets golden highlights or a red undertone. So, I don't want to crash your party, since I can't tell if I belong or not. But, I do think that ashy brown can be a nice colour that is often overlooked - I think a lot of people with it try to dye it blonde, and they don't always need to.

Thanks for the encouragement that it will get better as it grows. Currently, I like the two tone effect the red and brown give me while during certain updos, but I can see myself getting sick of it at some point.

This thread is the reason I came out of the shadows as a lurker, because I think this is a color that needs more encouragement to grow out than others. It can look just so shockingly blue/lead/grey toned!

Anyway, keep the inspiration coming everyone! It's really helping. All I can contribute is this picture I found. Hopefully, someday I'll have hair half as unique and special looking as her. I think it's lovely.

I might fall into this category. In the sunlight, my hairs looks gold, red, and light brown. It's more of a warm-ash. Not sure if that qualifies as ash. Aren't ashes supposed to be on the cooler side?

it looks really, really beautiful! I'm going to sound like the vainest person here by saying that it looks a lot like my hair colour :P
about two months ago or so I bought blue and yellow toner in an attempt to cool the henna red down but at some point I gave up on it because I sort of started liking the difference. In fact, I decided to redden up my ends with red toner which I might do once my hair reaches a certain length, maybe in a few months or so.

I might belong here. My hair is sometimes quite ashy looking - it often looks cool. Other times, though, it gets golden highlights or a red undertone. Hehe :) ashy hair has a tendency to lighten up in the sunshine. According to some of the people here they get a lot of golden highlights, it even turns honey-coloured. And besides brown will always be warm somewhere no matter how cool the tone is ;)

And I think it depends on the person when it comes to the dying-it-blonde part. I think ash brown is an 'inbetween' colour - it's the middle point from which you can go lighter or darker. I for example have big, dark eyebrows and I somehow always strived to darken my hair to intensify the colour and bring my hazel eyes more out; I always wanted to be a brunette.
I can imagine that there are some ash brown people out there with brows of a lighter colour than mine and who'd rather lighten their hair.
Basically if you feel more like a brunette by heart you'll go darker ;)

Thanks for the encouragement that it will get better as it grows. Currently, I like the two tone effect the red and brown give me while during certain updos, but I can see myself getting sick of it at some point.

Also, there is a youtuber hair guru (letsmakeitup1) who used to have BEAUTIFUL ash brown hair before she dyed it ombre blonde, which is pretty on her too... Here is a random video of when she had her natural hair colour (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AW4DhHU_NDI)

Oh and also: there is a French word that puts us ash browns and blonettes into one bag, it's "châtain". You can have a blonde, brunette and the châtain is inbetween. This is what google image search comes up with when you google châtain (http://www.google.com/search?q=châtain&client=safari&rls=en&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=LviwUvjsI8Kd7gbD7oGoAg&ved=0CAkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1433&bih=764) :)

^^THIS. I've been growing out my ash brown hair for two years. I absolutely adore ash brown hair but not really on me. I also prefer myself with darker hair, especially warmer darker hair. Call me vain ;) but I want my hair to be "defined" (this is the word I've been looking for), to stand out essentially. And here I am with my ashy hair debating whether to henna it...it's driving me crazy. Like I said, I adore and absolutely love love love ash brown hair but just conflicted about what looks best on myself. I have green eyes (warm trait), look best in pure white (considered cool trait), have green AND blue veins (umm..), and I tan pretty easily everywhere but my face (confusing?)...plus...

You know when you say a word over and over like a thousand times and then it just starts sounding funny and feels meaningless? Yeah, that's me and my hair right now. I've gotten so much contradictory opinions and information on it's colour. On the other thread I posted asking whether I was warm or ash, I even got some members suggesting I'm blonette when I've eternally considered myself a brunette.

Basically here is a photo of my totally virgin hair before 2010 (before I was dyeing it on and off for roughly 2 years) and here are more pre-2010 photos http://s847.photobucket.com/user/divinedobbie/library/2008-2010?sort=3&page=1

I don't know if I've stared at my hair so much that I'm just confused but to me my hair seems way darker and more warm in the before pictures, in some pre-2010 pics I can see the ash tones but in most of them I don't even recognize my hair and now that I'm growing it out it's definitely ashy and looks lighter as well. Now I don't know how to feel about this. Ahhhhhhhhhhhh :run:

Anyway I wanted to pop in and say hi, I think I belong here.Thank you stachelbeere for directing me here, I tried searching the forums but "ash" is too short of a word :/ If you actually read through all of that, congrats, I hereby pronounce you a patient person :D

I don't think I've seen this thread before, but it's for me I'm light ash brown! My hair is the same color as all of you :) I've grown to really like this color!

I believe that I belong here, too...Throughout highschool, I was pretty disturbed by my drab hair color as compared to the other girls. But I also didn't realize what all those girls may have been doing to emphasize their color. Long story short, I ended up with my hair dyed blue for a year (it was quite a hit in art school, and I was told that I worked the color better than the handful of other unnaturally-dyed kiddos). As of now, I am back to a brown (with some hidden flecks of blue, just for fun) and am regrowing my natural, ashy brown hair. :) I realize that whether my hair is ash brown or blue as the bird, I feel like my same ol' self - and am satisfied with being just that!

Plus, I feel that our ash brown colors are quite stunning on a sunny summer day, since we often have little flecks of random colors that catch the light. I remember holding my hair up to the sunlight, when I was little, so I could see all of the different flecks of color in my hairs. My hair may have been a smidge lighter back then, though. :)

Oh my, I think I finally found where I fit! I've dyed my 'mouse brown' hair for years and only this past year started growing out Virgin hair from a super short pixie cut. I always hated it and wanted it to be red/ginger, but I've started to like it this year as it's grown out.

My hair is called chestnut by my mum, ash brown by my gran (she had the same colour as me when she was young) and hazelnut by me. And mousey by my sister, lol. But it varies a lot. Sometimes it can look greyish, outdoors it has a lot of dark gold, and indoors it picks up red. Even with the gold/red, it is not 'blonette' - it's brown. I'm not too fussy what kind of brown I "should" call it, but it's brown.

Here is outdoors on a fairly bright day:

There's a lot of herbs etc to get more gold/red/yellow highlights or make hair a richer/warmer color but does anyone know of any natural ways like herbs to bring out ashy tones in hair?

The one that gets mentioned a lot is using a blue/purple shampoo but I have yet to find one that is "healthy" or cone free. Anyone heard of or tried herbs/plants/etc that were successful to add ashy tones to hair or minimize warm tones?

I think that black tea or coffee rinse can add some ashy tones. I didn't try it on myself, though. I'm pretty sure that there is a thread about tea rinse.

I've never been sure if my hair is ash/cool brown but it is exactly the some colour as the last 4 pictures posted. My hair is defiantly not warm or coppery, it has soft and neutral more yellow tones. I will be watching this thread.

I'm the same as many people here I dyed my hair darker then henned once the box dye grew out but I have only dyed it 3 times (counting my 1.5 years of henna as one dye) I'm too lazy for the root retouches :P

ETA; I just went through my old photos to find some of my hair in natural light while it was virgin. In direct sunlight it has some honey/yellow/gold tones to it but is still very neutral, on cloudy days or indoor it has obvious cool/ash almost looking gray in some pictures.

I guess I'll learn to love it eventually as long as I can refrain from cutting and dying!

This is my natural hair color I definitely belong in here. I think it is a very interesting color in some lights it looks very light brown almost blondish and in some it looks like dark gray. I don't have a proper picture so I'll post examples.

Depending on how light your hair is (if its closer to the second picture) then Id almost say youre more of a dark ash blonde than an ash brown but if its more like the other three, Id say you are a very light ash brown. In any case, that is a truly beautiful colour and I wish mine would go down two shades to be that light!

I definitely think you belong here. Indoors or on cloudy days my hair is very ashy but as soon as I hit bright sunlight I get warm reflections. I have also gotten extremely yellow-gold highlights in my front hair pieces from being pinned up and facing the sun. Ashy hair is known to become multi-faceted in sunlight which is part of what makes it so interesting! Welcome:)

The first link is so much my hair now (except the henna lower half, of course!). However, my eyes are brown and my eyebrows darker than in the picture. Also, I've discovered an annoying aspect of un-dyed hair - it becomes darker as it gets dirtier! It doesn't actually look greasy, but it looks darker by the day until I wash it and it's translucently ash-brown again... This didn't happen with henna!

I have very dark brown eyes and black eye brows, I always thought my my hair was boring and too light for me. My hair gets almost as dark as my hennaed hair when its unwashed too and then the back can be almost blond when clean. I think this is a characteristic of all blondette-light brown hair especially the more translucent ashy colours.
Also I'm currently loving that 'ombre' hair is in style it means my 1yr of roots looks like a conscious choice, I even had one girl the other day asking how I did it!!

I totally agree! My natural hair gets huge contrast with my bleached ends when it's unwashed because it goes to a dark ash brown but when I wash it, the difference between my natural colour and the bleach is hardly noticeable, it looks like the ends have lightened naturally. And just like you, I've been asked how I dyed my hair such a subtle ombre when I'm really growing out dye. I love the current trend ;P.

lucky you for having bleached ends! I am growing out henna and although it creates an "ash brown - henna - super red ends due to multiple henna applications and old dyes ombre" effect and is very gradual I still dislike the fact that it's a completely different colour temperature and in my head it just doesn't work >.< but oh well... nothing to be done with this. I've been looking for a purple or silver rinse to tone the red down but I haven't been successful so far :/ luckily it's almost reaching my ears now :) in a few months I'll insist that it is *supposed* to be like this hehe :P

rainbow hair! :D I'm curious what my hair'll look like once the henna travels down a bit more :D so far I noticed that my hair is a lot lighter when it's in the light than the henna [I mean there's less pigmentation which is visible in the light if that makes sense]. hi everyone, I'm posting my progress! it's been a year and 2 months since my last henna application and this is where I'm at - it almost looks like an ombre, which, frankly I'm not too crazy about because the length is so much more pigmented and intense than my ashy roots... but I'm not complaining too much here we go!

Would you show some pictures? I'd love to see what our ashy colour would look like slightly bleached, I always went darker :)

Also, a bonus picture of my whole length - the very ends are not that dark in reality, the sun wasn't shining on it :)

I ever considered to be my natural hair ash brown, but since I hadn't dyed it for 2 1/2 years I'm undecided. It's less reddish than the dyed hair in my bun, but it surely has some lighter strands which seems not to be as ashy as I thought. Different people told me they never thought that my natural hair color would be such warm. The photo was taken on a sunny day but it has only indirect light. If it's not ashy which color has it? Only brown seems too simple as everyone has a fancy name for their hair color. :p

I swear if I didn't know any better, I would have thought someone secretly took a picture of my hair and posted it on here! My hair looks very similar in colour. I'm always undecided what kind of brown it is. Sometimes it looks ashy, but in the sun it looks quite warm and in indirect light, it's exactly like yours - some ash and some warm highlights. I ended up staying in the ash brown thread because I absolutely love ashy hair so I'm hoping I really do fit in here for the most part. If I remember, I'll take a picture later and show you how similar our colour is. But for now, I'm interested in what other people say your colour is so I can maybe label my hair a little better as well.

stachelbeere, I missed your pics - great progress! I love the side braid!

FrozenBrittania, your hair is light even at the back, where mine is darkest; that makes me also think that you're more blonnete than ash brown. Even I sometimes think I could be blonette, as my hair looks rather light when worn down, especially after a wash. When I put it up, though, a darker shade is revealed.

Else, your colour could be golden brown, but you're very welcome to hang around here, with us! :)

Else, it's tricky - in that particular photo your hair looks a warm brown with some caramel highlights and compared to yours my regrowth looks very cool and grey. I guess you're growing out dye? is it more auburn/ reddish than your natural colour? if so - is your demarcation line super visible, just like mine, or does it blend a bit better? maybe that could be an indicator.

thank you jel

I posted here a long while ago when I had very little post-dye new growth. It's been over a year now since I've touched any color and I am still having trouble pinpointing my color. The strands are translucent individually and I have some natural blonde-ish and red-ish highlights throughout. I've been called ash lately by random people. Here I am outdoors not that long ago (ignore my ends):

I think almost every hair colour is terrible to categorise because they are so complex with their highlights, lowlights and no real comparison to anything.
But it looks like your hair is a 'darker' ash brown ('darker' because it's darker than my hair colour).

Welcome :D

I find myself being picky because my hair is so ashy it's practically gray. So everyone's seems more golden/chestnut to me. What you see in my avatar and sig isn't it. That's hennaed hair with dark brown dye over it. But that's another conversation (and headache). My hair is wet right now or I'd take a pic of my newer growth. But with all the henna, honey-lightening, and the like on here (which is all beautiful and fun) it's nice to see people embracing their beautiful natural browns. So keep 'em coming, lovelies!

I could use some encouragement with this too. :soapbox: I was born a silver blond so until I was aware of the ash/golden/red themes of hairdye I called my natural color poo. last time I colored back to 'normal' it was 2A but now more like 4A. [will it ever stop changing colors on me?!?!?] I've grown it out with bleach blond stripes and just added cherry black into it as well just to hide the blah.

yeah, it is rare to see someone with their natural ash brown hair because it's such a culturally undesirable colour, I think. Which doesn't mean that it can't be beautiful! When you look through the thread you'll find many beautiful inspirational pictures.

Growing dye out is really tough - but I think in the end it's really worth it! Do take a picture, it's always nice to see :)

:grouphug:
*sigh* I'm glad I'm not the only one. Its nice to see other people actually like our color.

Wow that sounds pretty awesome! blonde stripes and cherry black? I'd love to see that!! Poo can have so many different colours btw :P hahaha

This thread's been quiet for a while so I thought I'd revive it a bit by sharing my hair idol/inspiration, Marie Avgeropoulos (what a mouthful hehe). She reminds me why I should keep growing out my natural colour and almost makes me not want to henna (still can't decide;p). Here are some pictures: :)

wow... she truly has gorgeous hair! If it was my hair I wouldn't henna. But I'm saying this because I am growing out henna and I wish I never had hennaed.
On the bright side, by growing it out I achieved an amazing ombre effect, which looks really cool in a crown braid. I got some compliments on that today :D

Hello everyone :waving: Beautiful hair all around!
Would you say my hair is ash brown? If not, what color would you call this? All these pictures were taken outside today, the first three in sunlight and the last one in shade. It seemed like every picture I took my hair looked a different color. I think the first one is the best representation of what I think my color actually looks like. My top layer and ends are definately lighter and warmer than my under layers and roots- it's not dye though, just sun lightened.

yep, that is ash. it changes drastically in the sun, very hard to keep long ash hair the same color all the way to the ends, and I haven't really found dye that will be in the same family except darks.

I'm not sure if I belong here or over in the blonette thread. My avatar pic was taken next to a sunny window, and you can see the blonde in my hair, but a cloud must have passed over the sun in between taking that picture and the one below, because in that one my hair looks brown:

http://i834.photobucket.com/albums/zz270/frogggyh/100_3366_zps4addeaf8.jpg

Question: Does anyone else have a lot of difficulty finding the right colour for filling in their eyebrows? I have pretty sparse eyebrows, but the taupey brow powders/pencils I've tried have come out orange/red on my skin; it seriously looks like I'm hennaing my eyebrows D;

My color is very much the same as Lauren - Alia above. I'll try to get a pic up.
I'm starting to go grey though (43) too. But those hairs are silver white and curly/ wirey . I am kinda excited about the silver.

I'm also an ashy brown ~ slowly turning gray. I've thought about using honey to lighten my hair or taking the plunge to dye silver gray. Still undecided...:hmm:

I think i belong here ? My natural hair colour not even hairdresser could name. It actually changes slightly depending on how much sun do i get as i get easily natural highlights. Right now i do have bleached blonde stripes ( they look more golden now and more natural and i like the more than the clear blond ones) which i do like as they kinda give nice texture to my braids and buns. On this photo can see the real colour. So am i ash brown or what ? hmm...

lauren_alia you hair is definitely ash brown, it's one of the best examples of ash brown hair I've seen. Gorgeous :crush:

florenonite is all of your hair virgin? The hair in your bun and ends looks way lighter but that could just be the cloud/lighting. Based on the hair in the bun/ends though, you're blonde, no question about it. But if I was to look at the hair on your scalp, I'd tentatively say ash brown depending on lighting. Another picture if you have one maybe? :)

StellaKatherine Your hair is hard to classify but after looking and thinking for a while, I'd personally say "light ash brown". Is your siggy pic your natural colour or dyed? It looks very blonde, and not brown at all. Same with your avatar, the bun looks blonde.

Yay! Now I know what to call it besides "mousy brown" which is what my mom likes to say it is. I know what you mean about the dye- when I was 12 or 13 I dyed my hair strawberry blond (it was terrible on me!) and I tried numerous times to get it back to my natural color, but never could find a dye that worked. I just had to live with the mismatched roots as it grew out.

Aw, thank you very much :flower:

As for hair inspiration- I was thinking Maisie Williams (Arya Stark on Game of Thrones) was an ash brown as I think it looks that way when I see her on the show, but then I googled pictures and in some it looks ashy and others I would say it looks warmer and more chocolatey (not sure if she has dyed it?). Anyways, I don't know as this seems to be a hard color for me to pick out.

That is the issue with my hair as it changes colour naturally depending on the time of the year. At summer i get blond stripes and overal hair colour lightness, at autumn and winter the blond stripes turn in to more redish tone and at spring it again more of a greyish. On the both photos i have golden stripes in my hair, Like 80 % is my natural hair and about 20 % are coloured stripes. I was going to go natural, but my sister study to become a hairdresser and she kinda decided i needed more gold in my hair lol Here is me as a young girl and can see how weird my haircolour is, can see clearly blond stripes from the sunlight. https://scontent-a-mad.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfa1/t31.0-8/1891523_684003014983462_29496840_o.jpg

My length's not quite virgin. I used Sun-In a few times, but gave it up because it didn't seem to be making much difference. That being said, my length is definitely lighter than my roots, but I don't know how much of it is natural highlights and how much of it is Sun-In.

This is a recent length pic where you can see the sort of ombré thing I've got going on:

Unfortunately, most of my hair photos are taken in sunshine, because I like the way it makes my hair all blonde and shiny

I'm hesitant to call myself blonde (or even blonette), because in twilight or fluorescent light my hair definitely looks brown. I'm not sure whether or not that's normal for dark blondes, though.

Story of my life hahaha This happends in everything ! I can' say what colour my eyes are as they usually blue-grey but can look even green depending on lightning and clothes i am wearing. My skin colour has redness on my face which confused as even a beautician thought first that i had a darker skin and then was like " OH, it the redness is lying ". Okay, so we ignore fluorescent lighting. Presumably, your 'real' colour is what it is in natural light, but is that direct sunlight or indirect? :p For me, in direct sunlight I'm blonde, but in indirect I think it's brown

I think I'm also hesitant to call myself blonde because my sisters are all 'true' blondes; one of them still has platinum blonde hair, naturally. They've all been telling me I have brown hair for the past decade, and, while I used to get a lot of highlights in the summer, I don't anymore (Scotland's summer lasts an average of two days ;) ) so my hair's definitely darker than it even was a few years ago.

Warm skin being that with yellow or apricot undertones and cool having pink undertones. I'm still struggling with this myself. While I'm absolutely positive that I'm not blonde, my hair can look really light brown, or dark, ashy or very warm, depending on the light. Also people's perception has shifted a lot of what "blonde" really is because of all the dyed blondes that I find that most people don't recognize natural blonde and label it as dirty blonde or light brown instead, when it really is blonde.

I find the whole season thing really interesting. I'm usually typed as bright spring.

Anyway, I dashed off to go check my one bottle of foundation and powder. The foundation looks quite pink/grey/ashen and it matches really well (it's called porcelain). The powder is called golden honey (suggestive of warm tones?) and it looks kind of chalky against my skin.

What makes me curious though is I was told that the best way to determine skin tone is whether you blush pink or peach. I blush pink, everyone I know blushes pink, is there anyone out there who actually naturally blushes peach or is that a myth?! ;p I'd love to see it.

Interesting that the thread has turned to the exact topic I wanted to ask about.
I'm VERY warm toned, golden beige skin, my palms and especially bottoms of my feet are practically orange, and if I snack on too many carrots, fuhgeddaboutit, I'm bright orange there! But my skin doesn't have much warmth in it anymore, it's an ash mouse color. Used to turn gold each summer as an older child (as a little kid it was white blonde, gradually turning dishwater by age 10 and even darker by 20) but around age 20 stopped even getting natural highlights in summer, and by then I was fully on board with chemical highlights from the salon so I haven't even tested that anymore for over a decade. If a few inches of roots regrowth between highlights are anything to gauge by then I have ash brown hair nowadays, with zero warm/red undertones, but extremely warm toned skin. I am just not sure this is a great match but nature doesn't make mistakes???
Do any of you have very yellow-based skin but very cool-ash brown hair (perhaps that used to be blonde as a kid?) ?

leilani, I have very cool mid-dark ash blonde hair which looks kind of grey (or green in fluorescent light) most of the time and yellow-based skin. My hair was never light blonde or golden, even as a child...Which is exactly why I've been struggling to categorise myself according to the "season" analysis.

What colour are your eyes? Sometimes that might be helpful in analysing your overall complexion.

Your hair will probably warm up if you grow it out more. My hair was very ashy until I had a good years worth of growth. Especially once I went through a summer, I have so many red/golf streaks which I think is why I doubt I even belong here sometimes. I want to be an ash brown do badly that maybe it's a placebo effect. Im giving myself some more time to grow out my natural colour before really categorizing myself. Interestingly enough my hair was strawberry blonde as a baby, then light golden ash brown by age 7, and kept darkening and warming up. I dyed it when I was 14 so I haven't seen my full grown out hair in 4 years but I've been growing it out for about two and it looks way asher and lighter than I remember or see in photos from before I dyed it. It almost looks like I'm going back to my 6-8 yr old hair colour. Which I'm not sure if I'm happy about!

My eyes are a rich, warm chocolate brown. Eyebrows , however are ash brown. Most of my body hair is clear/colorless, except the fronts of my shins where they turn the same color as eyebrows. I really wish I would have that kind of great Jennifer Lopez coloring complete with rich brown hair OR would have kept my golden blonde hair of my youth, so things would just be more clear.
I'm struggling with experimenting with henna or grow it all out virgin and see what it does. I've managed to color it all to very close to the root color so there's no demarcation as I grow, which is a plus. Then again it's over 30 inches of a color I don't think is all that flattering....
Maybe I need to read this whole thread so I can be proud of wearing ash brown hair (even if it's synthetically produced at the moment) which matches my roots. At least now I can do crown braids and the ends match the hair nearest the scalp!

My mother-in-law is very warm toned (natural coppery red hair) and I would say she blushes a peachy/apricot color.

What makes me curious though is I was told that the best way to determine skin tone is whether you blush pink or peach. I blush pink, everyone I know blushes pink, is there anyone out there who actually naturally blushes peach or is that a myth?! ;p I'd love to see it.

I bet your hair would look different if you grew it out though. Roots always look different next to dyed hair than when it is fully grown out. In the past when I've dyed my hair my roots looked really dark and ashy next to lighter strawberry blond dye and really light when growing out from black dye.
I had white blonde hair as a kid too that slowly got darker as I got older! Strange how our coloration can change over time.

Do any of you have very yellow-based skin but very cool-ash brown hair (perhaps that used to be blonde as a kid?) ?

lauren_alia Pretty sure you haven't shared a picture yet (correct me if I'm wrong) but you should! I'd love to see a picture of your ash brown :)

Am I an ash brown or what color is this?
This is my natural haircolor in natural light in front of a window, but not in direct sunshine:

This is farther away from the window:

Those two are the best representations of my natural color as it's currently growing out of my head, so I do think my hair is ashy. :D

Here are two more pictures, one looks more like dark honey blonde and the other like dark brown...
I did have a one-time herbal mixture put in my hair well over a year ago (mostly cassia with a little henna and other herbs), it could be still giving some of the warm tones to my lengths. Also sun exposure as I have never protected my hair from the sun..

Joliebaby I would say so especially from the first two pics. (But I'm no expert;)) Either way your hair is beautiful! Your braid must be twice as thick as mine!

Joliebaby, I'm not an expert either but I'd say you're a blonette. It doesn't stay ash brown for more than a couple of inches, and I'm sure out in the sunlight it glows golden, no? I think lots of people have their first couple of inches from the roots a cool shade like that, but once it spends more time in the world and out in the sun, warms up to have natural highlights and dimensions come out. Cassia or no cassia, your hair lightens naturally quite a bit that would make you not a brunette in my books!

My daughter has pretty much the exact same color as I do, her hair is shoulder length or little longer and it stays pretty uniform in color. She does get very subtle highlights from sun exposure. She is darker than most kids here and she considers us "dark haired".

Then again, her hair also sometimes looks lighter, sometimes ashy, sometimes more golden/honey.

Ah well, the hair is the color it is, whether we call it brown or blonde or something in-between :D

wow, I'm so happy that so many ash brown hair people showed off their hair colour :)

Joliebaby I actually think your hair is ash brown. it's so beautiful and thick btw :) (your braid looks amazing...!)
I know the length looks more like golden blonde but I believe it might be the sun exposure. Your roots look very much ashy to me.

I wanted to post my growing out the henna progress. I am now able to do a really cool ashy-red-green crown braid, here is a picture from a couple of weeks ago

Your hair is so pretty! I know you've mentioned it before but I'm too lazy to go back through the thread, how long have you been growing henna out for?

Thank you :) Your natural color is very beautiful too! Could actually be similar to mine, hmm..

I looked at my daughter's hair yesterday. It was full on sunshine, the sunniest it will get here, and I could not honestly say that her hair looked any shade of blonde or blondette or whatever. (We have the exact same hair color now, though she might become darker as she gets older, as I was much lighter at her age.) In a group of kids she is always the darkest one (of the same ethnicity). Her hair is BROWN. Photographs sometimes may look dark blondeish but you have to consider exposure and different factors.

I have a very slight ombre/highlight effect going on in my hair. I guess to avoid it I would need to protect my hair from the sun a little. But I don't think that natural colored hair ever stays the same from roots to tips. Dark browns easily have that reddish tinge going on too.

This is my daughter's hair, inside, natural light, no direct sunshine:

It does look lighter depending on lighting conditions of course.
