I almost always wear my hair up, but I also love wearing hats. Does anyone have suggestions for combining the two? I like to wear sunhats outside, but lots of times those occasions where the hat is most needed (the beach, hiking, gardening), my hair would be most protected and comfortable pinned up in a bun and I've never figured out how to make both work at once.

The best solution I've ever come up with is to braid my hair and stuff the braid into a snood at the nape of my neck and then put the hat on.
If there's another solution, I'd sure love to know what it is!

I've been having this problem, too. a couple of my hats will work if I do a pair of buns really low at the nape of my neck, but there is no way I'm getting a single cinnamon bun under most styles of hats. I've been doing some research, and it looks like styles that work for people with dredlocks will work - tams, rasta hats, and wide cloth headbands - try http://www.etsy.com/ . My hair is thin and fine, and I wear sunhats a lot. I do a low bun and it works well. I have to be sure to angle my hairstick so it's not poking a hole in my hat, though! ;)

another thing that can work is to use a visor or other hat that has a hole/opening at the top, and do a high bun. It won't protect your hair from the sun though...

I wear a braided bun daily and also wear a hat. The trick is to be sure the bun is low enough and the hairstick is more horizontal. I think that an infinity bun worn low would work also.

I love big floppy hats and think they can set off all kinds of styles very well.

I'll second the vote for a visor.
I also have large brimmed hats that have the crown missing, so I can put my hair up and
still wear a pretty hat!

at the moment I mostly wear those fidel castro military hats, so I can put my hair into a very low bun-thingie (it's not a bun, really, but a ponytail loop with an elastic).
in the winter I only wear knitted pibo type hats, so no buns or any other updos work there I'm afraid.

I've decide to resurrect this thread, hoping someone has been able to come up with more solutions? It's summer time here, and I'm really interested in finding some hair covering hats.
The best I can think of is to make a hat in a Victorian style, that accommodated for a bun.

Would doing two buns (one at the front and one at the back) work better, you could then use a hair pin through the hat in to the bun to hold it in place on a windy day.
I would suggest getting the correct size of hat (they sell them on Ebay). One I got for this summer has draw strings at the back for me to make it smaller, it would also wrap nicely round a braid if I had one.
Some of the sports hats you can put your pony tail through, but that doesnt protect the hair. For me at present (with no hair), I wear a satin scarf tied at the back or side underneath with the hat on top.

I have ended up with three buns, one high like a half up, one in the middle of my head and a third down low toward the nape of my neck. I can even wear my motorcycle helmet with my hair like this. I wear hats every time I go outside. Good luck!

I like big, floppy sun-hats. They make me feel like a walking mushroom, which is fun. I also hate having a bun touch the nape of my neck for the most part, and can never get a bun to fit comfortably (or otherwise) under the hat. So I usually just do double braids and flop 'em over my shoulders. I usually take the opportunity to oil the heck out of 'em, though I usually don't need an excuse for that...

I generally like to wear a low infinity bun with my floppy sun hat (http://www.backcountry.com/outdoorgear/Outdoor-Research-Sun-Bucket-Hat/ODR0087M.html?CMP_SKU=ODR0087&MER=0406&CMP_ID=SH_FRO001&mv_pc=r126&mr:trackingCode=5EEA77DC-F061-DF11-9DA0-002219319097&mr:referralID=NA), and the two don't interfere with each other too much. That said, if your hat is fairly loose fitting and has a high crown, it's possible to get a flat high bun under a lot of hats, provided that your hair isn't really thick. (I bought an XL hat specifically for this purpose.) Otherwise, braids are always good with hats, if not particularly good at protecting ends from the sun.
Personally, I'll skip the visors. My (not bald) husband just had a nice size chunk of scalp removed due to a mild skin cancer, and I've found that my scalp can burn through the hair of an updo.
