View Full Version : The (tentative) Bun and Braid Reference Thread!

UPDATE: The contents of this thread contributed to the LHC Hairstyle Thesaurus (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=145554) now stickied in the Mane Forum.

Alrighty! As referenced here (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=112681), I'm attempting to cobble together a picture-referenced list of styles, buns and braids, almost like a database, if you will.
I'd like to point out that the frankly thudworthy list below is the work of neko_kawaii- I bow to her hero-level list skills.

What I'd really love to do is to be able to get a picture for every style, and a tutorial to go along with them. Obviously neko has done a massive amount of the work, so I'll be updating this post shortly with a running list of styles for which I need to dig up tutorials and/or pictures. Hopefully this will be something to which we can all contribute, and a great reference for anyone looking! :joy:

At the moment, I'm looking for pictures for practically every style, so if you have a picture you wouldn't mind being used on this guide, please let me know!

Hi Sylvestrix and Neko kawaii. Thanks for this awesome list. I've been needing something like this for ages and hadn't made the time to do it myself :)

Just an update - the link for the Nautilus Bun from TorrinPaige doesn't work, this is where it is:

I searched youtube and there really doesn't seem to be a good tutorial, so once my hair's dry maybe I'll make one.

I agree, that's just a cinnabun secured with an elastic. Here's a link to a different LWB tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TTt771qkO24

I think when I was making the list from old LHC lists pencil bun got on my alphabetic list but I have a vague memory of trying to find tutorials for a couple of the buns, pencil and lazy wrap I think, and finding that no one seemed to agree on what they were and I threw my hands up in frustration and walked away for a while and then forgot I still needed to deal with it. I still don't know what a pencil bun or lazy wrap are!

1) In lieu of the articles working again I can see this being a very important resource thread and worth of a sticky once completed/mostly compiled.
2) Thanks!

I'm so glad to have this thread!! Thanks for starting it! Now my hair is in a seashell bun instead of my usual cinnabun. Going to choose one of these to try for several days in a row, so that I can finally develop a repertoire of styles.

How funny (just because I haven't thought of her in a while-- I remember her in the Scarlet Pimpernel)! I'd be interested to see that article. She always seemed to wear her hair in a lovely, soft and elegant style.

Oh I'm so excited to find this thread!! I've been wishing for an updated version/ that the old thread didn't have so many dead links. I do agree with the others that said the link under 'Basic' isn't the lazy wrap-- it looks like a cinnabun using elastics. The second link for lazy wrap under 'Stick and Fork Buns' is the lazy wrap as I've always known it.

...I wish this thread hadn't been inactive for so long. :( Would anyone mind if I work on it/ update it a little? I don't want to step on any toes! (I don't have a lot to add, I'm mainly wanting to standardize formatting and fiddle with the organization a little.)

**Posts #23-26 are updated on an ongoing basis-- if you find dead links in these posts or a style you think should be included, please let me know and I'll update the lists!** (<-- Added 2/18/14; pm me or reply to this thread with any edits, I'm subscribed so I'll see it. :))

All credit to neko_kawaii and Sylvestrix for the content-- I really only did a little fiddling/ reformatting.

Well you're welcome! I don't want to take all the credit though, I just did some updating/ formatting on neko_kawaii's original list. I have been periodically adding styles/ videos as I come across them (Anyone, please let me know if there's something you want added! Do you have really thick hair? A lot of people who have lots of hair have trouble making most buns until they get a lot more length-- until then, their buns just kinda explode because it's hard to anchor the ends. I've never tried a sock bun myself, they're really pretty though.

What a fab thread...

Before I found LHC, when I was looking for updo ideas (as was getting annoyed with the 'pillow stuck to head' look of the basic bun I'd managed), I found this webpage: http://www.cutegirlshairstyles.com/

They have both written instructions and a youtube video for each up/half up/down do they post. I found it a great resource for ideas. Downside is most are done on someone elses hair, so I can't say how easy they are to do on yourself. Loved the 'minnie mouse' ears hairdo! Not that I've ever tried it! :)

I don't know if this one has been added already, but it's a new bun for me that I have never seen or heard of before, although it's similar to the Spidermom's bun.
The member Entangled posted this on another thread and mentioned it was a variation of the Spidermom bun in a video.

ETA: Here is what she said on the other thread:
If your hair is shorter, there's a cheater version of Spidermom's bun that I found to be secure. Bunch your hair in a like making a ponytail, then wrap it all around one or two fingers. Wrap the majority of the hair around the base of the ponytail, tucking your ends in when finished. Then, feel the hair wrapped around your fingers. Split it in half (I use a stick) and push the stick down in the middle of the loop. Wiggle it through the center of the bun, then pull the other half of the hair in your fingers down and stick the stick up through that loop. It's like having a flexi-eight made of your own hair.

I e been looking go the video I saw, but since I watched it about two years ago, I can remember who it was for he life of me! I haven't found it on a google or YouTube search yet. The person in the video had dark hair, and after they showed the long hair version and then the shorter hair friendly variant, there were some still shots form other times they'd worn the bun. One of them had a blue topped stick. Is this familiar to anyone? I don't know if there were spoken words or not, though I tend to prefer voiceless videos.

I don't think this question really deserves its own thread, but I'm not sure where it should go instead. If this isn't a good spot, please move it to a better one!

Two buns, lazy wrap and nautilus. They definitely have different ways of making them. Lazy wrap makes two smaller loops around fingers then wraps the rest underneath/inside. Nautilus makes one big separate loop, wraps the rest, then puts the loop around it. But once all is said and done, what is the difference between the two finished buns? They look very similar at the ends of tutorials. In fact, there's as much or more difference between the end results of different people doing the same bun, as between the same person doing each of these buns, in many cases!

I've been doing the motions for the lazy wrap bun for the past few days, but what I have at the end feels to my hand (and looks, when I have a mirror available) as much like a nautilus bun as anything else. What am I doing wrong? Or are the two end results really that similar?

http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=119288
http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=92114

Yes, I'm under the impression that LWB and Nautilus share the same topology.

However, the motions to get there are different enough and the size of the loop and the tightness of wrapping and presence or absence of twisting all add up, so they can look pretty different on the same person sometimes, and one usually needs more length to achieve a Nautilus (probably due to twisting and size of loop?) vs. LWB.

Also, my understanding is that the Gibraltar Bun is the same as LWB, but twisted as you go through the motions - so it's Twisted LWB (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsQlSwyEeQg), is that correct? :)
