How many times a year do you shed?
I shed a lot in the spring, then nothing all summer, now I'm shedding again.

Hmm I don't think I shed during a specific time of year. I do tend to shed a lot when I'm going through a stressful period.

Me too, i can't really identify specific times of the year that i shed. With me i shed more when my diet is poor, or i neglect scalp massages, or my health gets bad.....also consistant CO washing increases the amount i shed.

It must be seasonal for us paper, because I'm having a major shed right now too. I also shedded really bad in the spring, but I attributed it to some meds I was on. I haven't lost much in months, and then in the shower the other day, my hands and drain were covered in hair. I kind of freaked out, but there's not much I can do about it so I may as well get over it. Hopefully it will end for both of us soon!

One more shedder chiming in. It makes me very nervous because I had just begun to regain some volume. :( I don't know if it's seasonal because I was shedding so much all the time before starting thyroid meds. I think I'm going to try some of the essential oil blends now though. Anyone else?

Still shedding here and I just found out my ferritin levels have dropped. So maybe between the time of year and low iron stores I've found my explanation. :( I'm starting to see scalp and my hairline is receding. I hate this.

I started in on a major shed a couple of months ago that has had me freaked out. I started putting castor oil in my hair mixed with olive oil to help make it more spreadable...posted on the "castor oil in hair thread"... that had it stopped for awhile but now I am back to somewhat normal shed. This morning I had about 15-20 hairs.

How can I estimate if my hair loss is within normal range?
There was a time in my life that due to very poor diet I lost alot of hair, and since then I'm really aware about how much I shed. I even when to the doctor to have blood tests and all to see if there's any physiological problem, but thankfully there isn't.
I still shed quite much each shower, and some before and after, and in-between. How can I tell if it's normal or not? And more important - is there any helpful treatment to deal with it, or to strengthen the roots?

I shed constantly. I've never had a major or seasonal shed - just 100+ hairs per day, 365 days a year.

Earlier this year I barely shed at all (maybe a couple of hairs each time I washed sometimes none, and I rarely had any hair in my brush), but in August I shed a bunch. I'm currently still shedding a bit more than I did earlier in the year, but it has gone down about 5-10 hairs when I wash.
This is the first year that I've really paid attention to it, so I don't know if it is seasonal for me or not. Also, I started shedding when I stopped using MN, and I also moved to a new city and started a new job so it could have been stress related or a combination of factors.
Sorry if that wasn't much help.

I've taken a lot of solace in that a lot of ppl seem to be shedding now, but it's an unusual, scary amount for me. I'm getting my thyroid checked, I'll get the results on Tues. I used to attribute it to the length, maybe it looks like more than it is, but it's a handful :( And it's been going on a long time now.

I'm also shedding a lot of hair right now. I usually go through a major shed in December or January. I hope it's just seasonal because it's so much hair. I don't think it's medical because I'm taking medication to keep my hypothyroid in check and I take prenatal multivitamins because of the iron(I have chronic anemia). Unless it's the change of medication. I changed one of my medications to an old one I use to take. I don't think it's that because I've taken it before and never experienced this much shedding. Hopefully it stops.

bgarrison, I've just come off a MAJOR shed from low iron due to undiagnosed Crohn's...it went on SO long and nobody could figure it out! Meantime, I'm grabbing 60-70 hairs every time I wash my hair (and I don't have much to start with!!) Thank GOD I found a fantastic rheumatologist who demanded I go to a gastro...glad you found the cause!!
Aside from that...before, I seemed to shed only once a year for about a month. Those were the days...

I am still shedding. I think I've been shedding ever since...around the beginning of September. I can't wait for it to stop I'm tired of constantly having hair everywhere. I see a lot of new growth I just hope all of it is regrowing since it feels so thin.

I shed a lot. A whole lot. Especially when I'm stressed out. But I've always been like this so I don't worry too much about it. If I didn't shed like I do my hair would be HUGE, so I guess it's somewhat of a blessing, even though DH is always pulling my hair out of his buttcrack when he showers.

Thanks for the commiseration, Paper! It really does help when I feel so low. People who are not losing hair just don't get how hard it feels. Luckily mine started thick, but unluckily that causes doctors to dismiss me. I know how thick my hair used to be! Yes, I don't like how it looks, but I also want to be sure my health is ok. I get sick of dismissive doctors.

Yeah!!! for your happy news. Not that you have Crohn's, but that you now know how to take care of yourself. :) That's fabulous!

I don't know how to strengthen roots but would be curious to find out if it's possible. I can't figure out if scalp massage and oiling is helpful or stressful. Gentle gentle whatever we do I think would be wise.
From what I've read 100 hairs _per_ day_ is "normal". I've counted and my handfuls are never close to 100, but it's still freaky and my hair is thinning.

I have seasonal shed in the summer from the heat, 100+ hairs per day sounds so much in my opinion...and i read it's normal if you loose 100 hairs per day...hmm...i never experienced so much hair loss only in the summer i believe...for me when it's cold the hair is better...autumn,winter,spring till summer is ok, when summer comes means damage for me.
I don't loose so much hair ...maybe max 10+ per day i think.
I loose hair if i pull hard when finger combing...i must comb i think 3 times a day cause it's a little pro tangle because it's fine.
so i don't have problems with shedding...till summer comes. :)

Well, I'm shedding and have thinning. I keep thinking that there must be some treatment that could help. I was feeling kind of depressed about this, but I had a wonderful compliment today about my hair being pretty and bsl.

I shed all year 'round. That's why my hair is so thin when I wear it in its natural straight mode. But, it has always been that way.
I have noticed, however, that I seem to not shed as much since I started using shampoo bars. Apparently, my hair is enjoying the treatment enough that its not trying to literally jump off of my head.

I've never paid much attention to it, but apparently I shed tons, all of the time. I get a lot of comments about it from roommates and family who claim they're constantly getting long strands of hair caught in the vacuum, clogging shower drains, and sticking to their clothes, car seats, sofas, etc. I think I'm just blissfully blind to my own shedding, but when someone shows me a three foot strand of brown hair they found around the house, I can't exactly say it isn't mine. :D
I don't really worry about it, since I still have a ton of hair. I guess I've just gotten too used to it.

I'm going through a shedding spell right now. I'm sure it has always been cyclic, but now that my hair is longer it tends to be more noticeable.

It looks like my shedding has stopped. I think it's going to be a seasonal thing for me, Spring and Fall.

My shedding has slowed way down-- 15 to 20 this shower, but the thinness (and my still itching scalp) is disheartening. Fingers crossed I (we all!) start some regrowth this winter. :)
