Hi everyone. :)

I need some encouraging words, or advice.
Lately I've been feeling very down about my hair. I just can't find an updo that works, since it's so thin and miserable.
Can't wear it in braids, buns, ponys, and down is out of the question.

I have tried everything, all my attempts to experiment ends up with massive shed and my newly washed hair getting greasy from the manipulation.
Should I just cut it? I've been struggling for so long, maybe I should give it up.

I don't want to make this all whiny, but I'll show you what I have to work with.
(I never wear it like this, it's just to show you)
Also you can take a look in my album, my hair is very deceitful at times but this is what it comes down to:

http://i1057.photobucket.com/albums/t399/schakt/DSC08961_zps148c511e.jpg

Not very pretty.
This is how I always wear it, not very pretty either:

Thank you for reading!

Hey MaryMarx,

I think you hair colour is beautiful and it looks so soft- you should be happy!

To get some more volume what about something like this?
(1) http://pinterest.com/pin/8796161742389858 (the thicker the ribbon, the more pseudo-volume!)

There are also lots of really pretty hair-up-braid styles that you might like:

10000days, thank you! (And I like your nickname!)
All of those styles are gorgeous, I really like the first one. :)
My braiding skills sucks... also, I have really thin temples so that makes a lot of styles impossible.
But I'll take a closer look at your suggestions and PRACTICE. :o

:( Sad to hear you're not happy with your hair! I think the braids with ribbons are a wonderful idea that 10000days suggested. I had a friend who had hair that looks similar to yours and she used to plait it (just an English braid) and then tuck it under itself which looked pretty. Also, I've found that if I'm unhappy with my hair that hair flowers, soft headbands etc. can make me feel a lot better! :)

If you don't feel like cutting it, why not try either a gibson tuck, or a french or dutch braid tucked under itself? Those should work pretty well with thin hair, and braiding is not that hard, once you get the hang of it. :)

Just because it's not super thick like some round here doesn't mean it isn't pretty, i bet when it is at least BSL it will look lovely and your have more choice at updo's.

MintChocChip, I think braiding is the way to go too, I just have to get used to it. And stop shedding hair when I try! :p

DancingQueen, thanks! I actually do that style a lot, the tucked in dutch braid. But I don't think it looks good, either. It looks good as a braid but after the tuck it just looks like a mess. :steam
The Gibson tuck is so nice but there's no hair to tuck in.

Aw, thank you! :blossom: I really hope so too, but this is what makes me never get there, I start to worry too much about it and before I know I'm standing with a scissor in one hand and a ponytail in the other. ;)

MaryMarx, your hair is one of my favorite types! Beautiful, fine waves. Someone else has hair like that here and I think it's just gorgeous. Very fairy-princess like. I love it down, like in your album pic. And it's going to be even more ethereal and beautiful as it gets longer.

Enjoy! It's lovely.

(And if you just don't like it, you can cut to a length when you did love it. Life is too short. You should love your hair.)

I actually really like your hair just in the ponytail. It looks so fine and delicate. The soft curls are really pretty. <3 You're probably being overly hard on yourself. If you cut it you should remember that it's still going to be the same kind of hair, only shorter. If you grow it out a bit and have a little patience some of the thickness might travel down. I'm not great with suggesting hairstyles, but maybe you can make a doughnut bun to add more volume or add ribbons like other people have suggested. Also pretty hair trinkets like a small flexi 8 would probably look lovely on you.

My hair drives me nuts most of the time. No matter what I do it keeps splitting and some days I think it's really thin and I should just cut it all off. I am so glad I haven't though because on a good day it can look really nice, and no one else thinks it's as bad as I do. I hope you feel better about your hair soon.:flower:

I think your hair is so pretty, and I love how that pony looks! Your hair forms such beautiful spirals!
I think french or dutch braids sound like good options, and definitely using ribbons and pretty clips. Maybe bows or flowers? Using lace in your braids? I hope you'll find something that works for you :)

I agree grow it a little bit more to bsl and see if you get better results in the mean time I'd add some yarn to your braid. It comes in a lot of hair shades and it is more hair texture.

MaryMarx

allycat and Lunadriael, you are both crazy. ;) No, seriously, that made me happy to hear. :)
I really, really hope there will be some more thickness travelling down in time. I know I'll regret it if I cut, the only thing that happens is that I will lose a year of growth and in another year, I will be in the exact place I am now.

Onward to braiding! :guns:

I think those lovely soft curls would look great in a half up. I would use a volumizing mousse, and secure the top with cute hair clippies.

Or you could twist the whole thing up in a claw clip and let the curls pop out of the top.

MsBubbles

What are you using to try to keep the braids and updos anchored or tied off? When my hair was APL/BSL, because it's thin & fine, I had to use very small, light hair implements & ponytail holders. Heck, I still do. The end of my braid is like a shoelace, so I use the stuff people put in their babies' hair to make little ponytails. My hair was too light for a SMALL Ficcare until it was waist length.

I know what you mean about manipulating the hair so much that it ends up greasy. Can you try a French twist held with some tiny claw clips perhaps? The tiny claw clips were my savior til I got to about waist length. They are lightweight, and you can hold up a bun with the weight evenly distributed so it doesn't all pull in one place. The good thing about the length you have right now is being able to do nice-looking French Twists. It doesn't work too well with longer hair.

Somebody posted a picture of a similar style, but I found a tutorial here (http://www.becomegorgeous.com/hair/newest_trends/how_to_style_a_cool_reverse_crown_braid_updo-8535.html). I think it would work in your hair, and protect your ends.

Kittybird, thank you so much! I can't see right now what it is you like about that pony, but I'm glad you do, because of course that is what I worry most about, that others will find it ugly or ridiculous.
I will definitely look into ribbons and stuff, that might get me to wear dutch braids in public. :)

jacqueline101, that's a great idea, thank you! Maybe I could try and make a paranda.

starlamelissa, I wish I had the guts to wear a half updo... I don't think I do, yet.
I have some claw clips but I don't think they look good. And everything falls out in a couple of hours, but maybe I just haven't found the right one yet, I'll take a look around, thank you! :)

MsBubbles, your hair is gorgeous so if mine turns out like yours, it will be worth the waiting and the anger.
I use these little guys;

I use those little guys all the time too. My hair is fine too and it can definitely make it seem like it takes ages to grow. You are in that sort of awkward place right now anyway. I suggest making sure your diet is good, and that you're not deficient in anything, and practice some really persistent benign neglect.
You can get there! I second what MsBubbles said about the tiny claw clips. Those work great, even in longer hair. You know you could try two french braids, and I definitely second the half up idea. Cornstarch or dry shampoo can help too, as someone else mentioned, to add a bit of volume. It should also help with the greasy look you get from manipulation.

Try this too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DAJPbTaT9KA

For the tiny claw clips I like to do this (but skip the hairspray!!!): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40fsFIsJkVU

BigSexyHair has a lot of styling powders that make your hair look more voluminous.
I've yet to try them, but I saw them at Hair Cuttery yesterday and thought they might help!
I personally believe that sock buns make anyones hair look thicker in a bun.
That said, they aren't ideal for shorter lengths, or people with layers (me).
I do a fake one without the donut, and I can make it messy or neat.
I noticed you have ponytail holders, so you should be good with this.
I just put my hair into a high ponytail- personal preference, if you like lower buns, do it low-
and after I secure that, I fan the hair out around the hairband.
Like a fountain. Then, I put on another hair band to secure the fountain.
The ends should be hanging out from under the ponytail, and you should have a little nub instead of a ponytail.
Pull on the hairs of the little nub until the ends of your hair aren't as apparent.
If you want a messy one, tug however you want.
If you want a more "true" looking sock bun, carefully pull strands to an equal length. :)

Hi MaryMarx. Sorry to hear you're a bit fed up. My hair is much thinner than it used to be and I too find this a little frustrating at times. I find that styled curls/waves help a lot. My hair is probably a 2c, maybe 2c/3a but my natural waves and wurls do nothing to disguise the thinness. I have to use pin curls, bun curls or a roller set to give my hair added oompf. I've had lots of success with pin curls, find them really easy to do and the best bit is I can set them before I go to sleep and wake up with tons more volume and texture. I'm now trying my hand at Caruso rollers, if only because having my hair in pin curls at night isn't always convenient. If I want to get, er, cuddly with DBF then the pins end up coming out and I wake up with disaster hair. :p

I agree with others, that when your hair is longer you'll probably find you can do more with updos.

Don't cut.:) I know it's hard, I have had massive shed for years. I still can't do a decent english braid, no ponytails either. I have worn a sock bun today for the first time, but you do need a bit of hair for coverage there as well. It's hard to deal with thin hair. One thing I do sometimes, is take a front section, and pin it into a bump, so it's not flat against my head. Then take random sections from the back, form loose spirals around my finger, and pin them to my scalp with small pins. You make as many sections as you can, and pin them in a flower shape at the back of your head. It will look fuller and bigger than a normal tight bun (those don't work, they look too small on my hair). Also, longer hair equals more hair to work with. Over the last year my hair has gotten longer and thicker, and I find it's easier to handle. It will never be a iii, maybe not even a thick ii, but at least it'll get longer, hopefully. If you cut, you won't have more hair. You'll just have short hair.

BTW, a good friend of mine has hair like yours, only straighter. She has always had problems with it, but now she decided to grow it long. It's BSL right now, and looks great, with very long layers to give it some movement. It's really pretty, and looks way better than when she had shorter hair. Hang in there. Also, visit a doctor, shedding might be a symptom of an illness.

Your hair looks perfect for a beautiful, sophisticated French twist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYarMswUg40) (aka French pleat (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yRpcKYJKI9c))!

If the pencil bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0k3dD4qX34) works for you that is super-quick to do, I really liked it and used it all the time while my hair was a cooperative length. My favorite thing was to secure it with a cheap Ficcare-type clip, I found that much more stable than a stick, basically fuss-free all day.

Another favorite thing of mine was to just stuff all my hair into an octopus clip (http://www.sallybeauty.com/tortoise-hair-clip/SBS-424197,default,pd.html), using the clip as a bun-cage. If you don't have one, you can make a rough measurement of your bun diameter and then measure the clips they have at Walgreens or wherever to get one that's a good size for you. I found this simple octopus-clip bun very helpful for getting through an otherwise awkward stage with minimal hassle but a lot of protection for my split-prone hair. And think of the satisfaction when you outgrow it! ;)

That looks like a pretty normal ponytail thickness to me. Pretty normal sized bun attempt for that length too. At that length, it's not really doable to put my hair in a bun. Braids, ponytails and half ups are the only things that work. My hair is really not fond of French twists or peacock twists and is inclined to spit them out. But my hair is a lot straighter than yours, and very slippery.

It looks to me like your hair is fairly dry and frizzy, and that is making things look worse than they really are. If you can encourage your curls to clump, your hair would not look so wispy and frizzy. Generally more moisture helps with clumping. Depending on your hair, sealing with alcohol free hair gel or oil can be a good idea too.

Nthing the suggestion to visit a doctor. If your hair is shedding enough to change your ponytail measure, you've got some kind of health problem and it needs to be tracked down. That said, I shed a lot of individual hairs each day, with no real change in ponytail measure. If you've got fine hair, it tends to mean that you have more individual hairs to make up a given thickness... so if you shed the same percentage of hairs as someone with coarser hair, it's going to look like a lot numbers-wise. Winds up that my hairball after combing looks like enough to make a good cat toy :P

Don't give up! Your hair has nothing wrong, it's that at that length hair is not easy to wear. Just have patience and don't focus very much on it, because when it gets to BSL and beyond it starts to look pretty more easily. It's just months away! You'll be glad you had patience.

I agree a French twist may work beautifully for you! Or maybe a headband twist? Put headband on around your head and over your hair, and tuck small sections up and over the band. Mine is long, but you could do a delicate version of this... Which may look darling with a pretty lacy headband.

I say scrunch it with some aloe vera gel. You'd have cute little wave like curls, or at least some waves. You could also braid it or pin it up in cute styles. My hair is quite thin and my bun is small despite my hair being at hip length, so I feel your pain. Yours looks quite thin as well. I'd say stick it out for a bit and try some cute flower clips and pin up the back, do braids, etc. If you're still super unhappy in a few months than do a trim. It may get better as it gets longer though, so don't give up!

Mya; Oh, thank you! I'll hang in there. I know it will pay off. :)

torrilin; I'm not sure if it is dry or not, can hair behave like this even if it's not dry? It usually looks like this the day after washing and after I've slept on it... I don't know, it just drives me crazy. Probably gel would be something good, since I've noticed after manipulating the hair when trying an updo, that wispyness is gone.
The shedding is mainly when braiding and such, I think it's quite a normal amount of shed and I haven't noticed thinning. :)

QMacrocarpa; I kind of don't think I have ennough hair for the pencil bun, really... I tried a French twist yesterday and it ended up... something else, I really need some practice! ;)

MissAlida; I won't! :) I like that pinned updo you mention, with the front bump, I'll try that.
And you're right, what happens when I cut it is I get a decent hemline, then after a few months, it'll look the same again. So I'm just delaying the unevitable.

finzi; thank you, maybe I just need to style my hair a little, I really don't do anything these days! All the damage I had from straightening and colouring for years and years scared me into the opposite, no styling at all...

alexis917; thanks, I'll play around with some buns (haha) and see what works. :)

Kherome; I've totally forgotten the small claw clips, I really like them so thanks for reminding me!
About the greasiness, I'll try to to all the practicing on days it doesn't matter if it gets greasy, so then when I know an updo by heart it will be done quick enough to not cause any greasiness. :)

longNred; I really like that headband look and I've seen it before, I'll try to find something headbandy to try it out with. :)

MaryMarx, I think your hair is very pretty and I hope you don't cut!

I second the suggestions re French twist and sock bun -- perhaps you could try the fully rolled one that Loepsie demonstrates on YouTube? Also, if you learn to French braid you could do a tucked one. I used to do that quite often -- it looks polished and you can tuck the entire length of the braid out of sight against your scalp if you aren't happy with how the tail looks.

Hiya. My hair is very fine and thin also and recently I got fed up of mine. I got tired of my French pleats and French braids, my problem mainly being is that I don't like how my face looks with French braids and pleats. So I discovered an easy option to soften the look a simple elasticated headband that push some of the hair forward and gave my hair more volume. I used to use mousse, but I also have static hair that can be a pest at times, so I don't use them any more. I also used to use rollers at one time with some styling product, but they began to get uncomfortable sleeping in. Your hair is the length that can hold a curl well and it looks as if curls are already present, so you could use rollers to emphasise that curl more. French braids do look good with this hair type and gives the illusion that it is thicker and I think that French pleats look good as well. With the French pleat instead of twisting it just try folding it and clipping it into place. I am sure you will find a style that works for you. Good luck. :)

Basically, my inclination is to assume that your hair leans towards dry unless you have symptoms of overly moisturized hair. It is *possible* to wind up with overly moisturized hair, but it's not a common thing at all. It might turn up as often as one or two LHC users per month... whereas dry hair is a common problem that shows up many times a day. Breakage, split ends, "frizz", flyaway strands, and hair that tends to get static electric charges are all common signs of dry hair.

And you can definitely have hair that's dry and a scalp that's acting oily. There's a lot of possible reasons for this, and a lot of ways to handle it.

In your position, what I'd do is investigate curl friendly hair care. Curly hair is often drier than straight hair, and it tends to look better with lots of moisture. And a lot of the time something as simple as changing how you use your regular conditioner can really help. I really like Jessicurl's video on type 2a hair (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7KCldodunk) for providing a helpful overview of curl friendly technique. The video shows that brand's products (of course!) but the product tends to be a lot less important than the technique. And they discuss how to substitute products and what kinds of things you might change in the video. Very informative :).

MaryMarx I also have fine, thin hair so I understand your feelings completely. My hair is currently sitting at just below shoulder length but the sides are a fair bit shorter so updos can be a challange. I have a tiny little flexi-8 which I do a cute little french twist type of style with and that works pretty well. I am also able to do a french braid although I can only maange one at the back and all other braiding techniques alude me.

Your braids look great in your pic. I have tried this style but my brain just can't wrap itself around this one so I am all fingers and thumbs. However I know if I did manage it it would not look as thick as yours so i think, like me, you see your hair as worse than it really is. I think moisture is definitely a help with our type of hair although it can be hard to find the right amount to control the wispy bits but not so much that it weighs it down and makes it look stringy and greasy. I do use aloe vera gel (not sure if it has parabens in it) and I find it helps it feel a little plumper and adds some shine without weight or grease. I also find a good moisturising shampoo and no conditioner can often work better for our type of hair. However I do also CO a fair bit and find that works well to but I have to shampoo about once a week otherwise I start to get a bit of build up and it weighs it down.

Glad your starting to feel better about it though and I think the other posters are right in that as it grows, updos will be easier and the added length will look good, that's my hope for mine too. :)

Kome; I think you're right, some gel would probably be a good thing to try! I have an Aloe vera gel, but I discovered it has parabens in it. :( So I could look for another one once I have the economy for it.

Theobroma; Thank you so much! My french braid skills (or dutch actually) are pretty good, and a tucked in braid was my everyday style for a while but one day it just started to look messy and I didn't like it...

BUT! All the wonderful support in this thread made me try this:

With some practice, I might wear this for the next 2 years. :D
So thank you everyone, I knew it was a good idea to consult you. There will be no cutting!

Angelica; thank you for the tips! I will try the headband thing, sounds really cute. :)

Yay! No cutting! :cheer:
That style is fabulous! It looks very classy. I've tried something similar, but my braids are tiny compared to yours. (I tend to braid very tightly, so that's probably the trouble.) I can't get mine bunned up in back though. How did you manage it?

Louise148, thank you for writing! I have faked some thickness in the braids by pulling it, making it flatter but bigger looking. ;)
Also, one thing that made me manage this (because my brain really have a hard time with all the fingers and all the strands and over and under and which is the middle strand again??) is that I started by just doing the front, and then I managed to get it behind the ear and so on.

I kind of don't get the no conditioner thing! Or, I do, but it would feel so wrong. :p Maybe I should give it a try. I have done some occasional CO-ing but I don't think I notice any difference. Also this problem appears the day after washing. Right after, when it has air dried, it can be really curly and holding together, but the day after it starts drifting into space. :alien:

I have braided these ones loosely, and also been pulling them to make it look thicker. Sorry but I just can't recall how I managed that bun-thing..! I combined the two braids into one, and then I kind of just flipped it... I'm pretty sure I'll never be able to make it again. :p
