Hi! :)
The temperature is abnormally high for this time of the year and the sun is BURNING. I'd like to wear head scarves and hats for the first time in my life to protect my hair against evil sun rays. I have so much scarves that I never wear! Show me what you are doing in summer to protect your hair! Random inspiration photos are welcomed too!
Here's a couple of scarves I like:

Minimal protection but cute retro style!

I bought some turban twist headbands from this seller recently :http://www.etsy.com/shop/Rumraisina?page=2
I definitely wanna rock this look for the summer to get the hair outta my face and to give my hair some coverage. :) Those wide headbands look cool too. I wonder if I can rock them...:hmm:

I have one of these flat crown hats (http://www.prayercoverings.com/catalog.php?item=154&catid=3&ret=catalog.php%3Fcategory%3D3), but haven't quite sorted out how to make it stay on in any sort of wind. I got it because I wanted something that I could wear with a bun, and it works fine for that. I may have to break down and use hat pins, but they kind of scare me.

I have a sun hat (I bought it at Lowes or Home Depot). Only problem is, I can't seem to get it (or any hat really) to work with an updo of any sort. So when I'm outside and wearing my hat, I braid my hair.

That is a good idea. Magalo I really like your scarfs. Especially the retro one. I have a question- what about a sunscreen? Did anyone know if its O.K to put a little and mix with the conditioner? or just mix a little bit with the leave in? (By leave in I mean anything you put on your hair without immediately washing- like after washing oil treatment or leave in conditioner).

For hiking/other outdoor activity I wear a Buff like on the tutorial with the ends tucked under: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ogCFtfUOgLc
It protects all of the hair, stays on better than scarves and doesn't have any bits that might get caught on something. And if it gets pulled out of my head it's easy and quick to put back on.

Love these, I do however always worry about pulling loose hairs into knots when I tie anything to my head. That and maybe my head is just oddly shaped but things just seem to slip off me.

I have a sunscreen for my hair:) it's a spray and it makes my hair a little greasy (like when you've put to mutch oil in)
But at least it's a bit protected.

A low bun and a wide-brimmed hat do the trick. I had my hats lined with satin today, in order to minimize friction from taking the hats on and off.

For hiking, wide brim front, and half-circle fabric back that covers my bun and back of my neck. If I am also trying to protect against dust/dirt/etc. I'll use a pony scrub (http://www.blueskyscrubs.com/scrub-hats/) too (if not sunny, I'll just use the scrub. Sorry, no glam shots of those combinations!

The shops I liked above are my favorites. The second shop can sometimes take a while to ship, but the quality is good and she is always very nice via email.

I use Buffs, too, but usually the beanie version. Sometimes I do the one you linked. Around here Buffs are way better than scarves because it's often windy in the summer.

Right now I have a big floppy hat, but I plan on making myself a couple scarves. I usually wear this hat while gardening, but every now and then i'll wear it out to the park or other places where i'll be in the sun a while. It really is the best when it comes to protection. I'll wear it with a braid or low bun.
Sorry for the bad phone quality photo.

I like to take one of those long scarves like you wear around your neck in the wintertime but in a light summer fabric, drape it over my head (kind of low on the forehead at first), then braid the ends into my hair for a single braid down the back. I'll do that today and get a picture.

Buffs are great. I really want to find a nice silk scarf to do that whole 50's housewife headscarf thing because bandannas aren't big enough for all my hair

I saw those a while ago and totally forgot the name, thank you for the reminder. :D I need one of these too, they look great for sport/being comfortable/versatility. Plus it's canadian -> two days shipping -> almost instant gratification. Yes!

Oh I like these. I like that you can get the look of a wide band without an annoying big knot at the nape like with a normal scarf. They're not expensive neither! Thanks for the links. :)

I totally want to see that! I have one or two long summer scarves that are too long for just wrapping around my head/neck.

But whatabout oil as a sunblock? Our some kind of conditioner, would that work?

Some of the UV Buffs are large at 20 inches by 10 inches, it's not simply the teeny tiny bandanas. A silk scarf would let a lot of rays through unless you folded a huge one repeatedly.

I wouldn't even think about relying on products if you are serious about hair health, a few oils have a very low SPF but you likely need to add piles to get that - thick how much sunscreen you are recommended to use on your face.

Silk scarves with a big floppy hat over were super effective while I was out hiking and digging for 20 days. I have minimal splits and no sun bleaching. I may not have been fashonable but my hair still looks good.

I picked up one of these hats a couple of months ago and now I never go anywhere without it.

My numerical hat size is 7 3/8, and in this I got a size medium. I can wear a bun with it, but it has to be a low bun. The sun protection for my hair and my face/neck/shoulders is great. And for ten bucks? Can't beat that, folks.

I'm growing out my natural color.... am I the only one exposing my hair to the sun to see if it lightens up a bit?:)
Don't get me wrong the rest of me has an SPF on.... but I am secretly trying to lighten up my dark blonde hair via the sun.

You're not the only one. The sun lightens my hair in the summer. I use the sun as a hair dryer in the summer. It lightens my hair after a while and my hair actually likes it.

I bought 3 headscarves/bands from SpecificallyRandom, can't wait til they arrive, I will be posting pics in this thread :)
I'm also growing out natural colour and like to dry my hair in the sun and lighten it, however, I tend to get a sunburned scalp doing this :( Hate picking the dry flakes out of my hair days later!

The SpecificallyRandom banana scarves are great. I have five of them, I think, and wear them often. Downside is they're not so good in stronger winds (the back flips up). A little breeze is OK. A Buff works better if it's really windy. I have a couple regular Buffs, but they're kind of tight (I have a big head). I like the marino wool Buffs better because they're longer and stretchy. And machine washable! If anyone is interested in either a hot pink or blue patterned regular Buff, PM me. They'll go up on the swap board next week otherwise (I hope).
I have a silk snood on order from here: http://www.etsy.com/shop/asnoodforallseasons. They look like they would also work well out in the wind.
ETA: Oops--"bandana" scarves, not "banana"!

Goodwill always has bunches of scarves, for around 50cents to one dollar. It's surprising how often they are real silk.
I didn't get to age 56 with people guessing I am 35-40 by hanging out in the sun. I'm not ashamed to wear a big hat so that my face isn't getting the sun anymore than my hair. But basically I never go out for extended periods of time between about 11 and 2 pm in the summer. I save my walks, chores, etc. for early in the morning in summers and in the evenings from about 5-8. Learned this from my grandmother who used to walk around with an umbrella (not even a parasol, just a plain old umbrella) to avoid destroying her skin. She died at age 93 with less wrinkles than a lot of other women have at 40--and with thick, healthy, tailbone length hair.

As much as I love the idea of protecting my hair and face from too much sunlight, I have a practical issue: Usually, when the sun shines bright in summer here, it's also quite hot, and wearing a scarf or a hat makes my scalp bake. Whenever it's hot, I try to catch every possible breeze, and so far, sun protection seems to inhibit that for me.
I guess trying light, airy scarves would be my best bet, huh?
