View Full Version : I cut my hair from MBL to shoulder! (Pics, obviously!) +Hair Journey and Updates

Hey everyone!
I haven't been around much for the past year or so (that awkward moment when school becomes more important than hair, aw darn) but rest assured I've been practicing the tips I've picked up here, no matter where I'm at!

When I joined in Sept 2011, I was fed up with my colour-treated hair. I had been getting it highlighted for about 2 years at that point, and had experimented with highlights and box dyes on my own (why!?) during summer 2011. I cut my hair to around APL, but it was filled with layers and was dyed allover. Needless to say, I hated it. My ponytail circumference was pitiful, and my hair felt awful. It was determined to grow out healthy hair while also growing out my natural colour. Til about 2 months ago (so from Sept 2011 to February 2013) I was just steadily growing and trimming, still keeping off the dyes, deep conditioning, not heat styling, etc.

My hair is naturally soft and quite fine, but rather plentiful. Before I dyed my hair at all (way back in 2009) it was so much shiner/thicker/healthier. I really wanted that back. I was sporting the quasi-ombre look because of my highlights that I was growing out, and I was getting sick of how tangly the bottoms were and the great colour difference. So what did I do? Cut it, of course! I was around BSL/MBL this past winter, and cut back to a shorter BSL in March. Then, 2 weeks later, I cut it to APL. Then last night? Bob.

I only have a few inches of highlights left at the bottom of my canopy layer (underside has never been dyed, so that's all virgin) and my hair is SO much healthier! I've cut about 9 inches in total in the past 2 months, and I honestly feel great about it! My hair wasn't damaged per se, but the ends were so scraggly and unappealing IMO.

Sooo, now for the fun part, pictures!

June 2012 (looking raggedy): https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/155650_588552401157283_1120030945_n.jpg

January 2013 (after some sizeable trims, a couple that were around 2 inches): https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/528281_588552467823943_1455378404_n.jpg

This is a photo that captures my colour difference really well. I have no idea what camera setting this was on (that the contrast between warm and neutral was so great) but it really illustrates my point! And then finally... the bob! At least I'm calling it a bob, it may not be short enough to be called one "officially", but whatever. https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/562618_588554237823766_691272767_n.jpg

I was primarily just REALLY sick of the colour/quality difference. Slowly getting used to my short hair!

Thanks to everyone for the amazing advice they've given over the past year and a half, I really enjoyed the LHC community :) Hope everyone's hair growth journeys are going well!

I agree on the color and condition difference too. It was easy to see. Your shorter hair looks good too, and I am sure now it will grow out much better. :)

Good for you for taking such a difficult step to getting healthy long hair! The bob is really cute! Can't wait to see how it looks when it's longer. :D

That's great that you were able to get rid of all of your old damage! Enjoy your short hair while you have it, as it's going to seem like it's growing much faster, now!

I love the darker color, and the long bob on you.

April 13th, 2013, 07:41 AM
Hair cut look great, but it's your SMILE that's the real winner!

April 13th, 2013, 01:51 PM
Thank you all so much! :flower: The only problem is that I'm going to have to straighten my hair now if I want to wear it down, but it takes a single stroke to get it straight and I will keep up with regular trims, so hopefully I won't damage my hair.

That bob looks really cute on you! It suits you well :)

April 13th, 2013, 10:32 PM
How gorgeous!! Your new cut looks just fantastic, that was definitely a good decision :D I think your hair looked great before too but the "after" just seems to really, really suit you. Congrats!!

April 14th, 2013, 02:45 AM
I also think the bob is super cute! It's better to start from a place where you are already happy with your hair! :-)

April 14th, 2013, 03:46 AM
Great cut, I love your natural colour too. Good luck with the rest of your journey :)

April 14th, 2013, 07:11 AM
You look gorgeous with your new haircut and your hair looks so healthy! Amazing!

April 14th, 2013, 10:40 AM
Your new cuts looks great on you. The last time I grew out bleach, that's right about the point where I cut away the color difference and damage, too.

April 14th, 2013, 11:15 AM
Thank you all so much! :) LHC never fails to make me feel great about making an unconventional (but hair-healthy) decision.

And spidermom, I think most people are fed up by that point! A fresh start was a much more appealing alternative, IMO.

You are brave and gorgeous and your hair looks very thick and healthy!

I thought of doing this today too but I am pretty sure my mom would have said she is too busy (well, she was, with getting ready for a prom - not hers, she is a teacher LOL). However I have found that I only have a few damaged strands still -my ends are not bleached all over anymore, though I find it a bit strange. So for today I only did a deep treatment and a bit of S&D that I don't normally advocate (if I had found there was too much of it to be done, I wouldn't and I'd decide on a cut whenever mom can take the time).
