I was lying in bed last night thinking about hair and suddenly thought that in the last few weeks I seem to be losing more hair than usual. This morning I measured my ponytail circumference and it has DROPPED -from 4. 25 inches last year to 3.5 inches today!!!
I don't know if it is a seasonal thing or whether it is from the stress of leaving my husband in early January... I have read that if you go through a stressful time it can cause hair shedding 3 months later, either way I am an unhappy bunny! I really hope I regain the thickness!:(

I think all you can do right now is:
- do some blood tests, if you have any suspicions of underlying health issues;
- de-stress and create positive emotions and experiences;
- baby your hair.
I hope it's seasonal or very temporary due to past stress.

Aww, sorry to hear that your pony circumference has gotten smaller. :( I'm pretty sure your hair will start growing back once the stress stops, but it'll take time before the new hairs will be long enough to make it into your ponytail. Just try to take time to relax, maybe meditate a bit every day, and make sure you get all the nutrients you need. Scalp massages could be beneficial too, I find them to be very calming and soothing. I know it's probably very difficult, but don't obsess over your hair getting thinner. 3.5" is still thick imo, and your hair is very beautiful :grouphug:

I'd say stress would be the cause. I'm going through some stress and my hair started shedding.

I am thinking it could be from stress as since I left I have actually improved my diet, lost weight, drink good quantities of water and am feeling better in myself generally.
Certainly though, it has been stressful, moving, renting, looking for work, getting car fixed after someone drove into it... ongoing discussions with husband re asset splitting, general worrying about the future, stressful, yes.

Since you did not seem to have problems before I would say a) stress and b) weight loss.
Weight loss is a common cause for temporary hair loss. How long ago did your stress and weight loss happen?
If much time has passed I think it is unlikely it is that, unless you are stressing to the point of breakdown.

I ditto on stress. I am often stressed and that's when I shed. I lost a large amount of weight but had no hair loss (actually gained circumference) but if you are eating healthy and enough healthy fats and protein you shouldn't be shedding like that.
Did you move to another climate? Climate changes can affect my shedding. I recently moved up north (cool weather) and I shed way less than last year.

Well I have moved south (to a cooler area) and have been on a diet yes but losing 2 - 3 pounds a week and eating healthily, fats, proteins etc. Anyway I haven't lost any weight for the last 3 weeks. I began the weight loss in January when I moved here. The stress had been happening majorly for months previously to the move and continued until about mid February. I am not particularly stressed now, but I have read that hair can shed AFTER the stress has happened.
Anyway I have decided that stressing over shedding isn't going to help and surely it won't ALL fall out, my hair can now do as it pleases and it will stop shedding when it is ready to. I am not going to stress over it and I'm sure it will go back to normal - at some stage. :) At least I know how to baby it along in the meantime.
ETA: Maybe it is just a yearly shed - who knows, do people shed in autumn?

People have different shed times. I tend to have a major shed every 1.5 years it seems. My last one was in summer, the one before that was fall. I don't recall any major shedding during my most intense times of stress, but then, I couldn't have cared less about my hair then!
I think it is probably stress maybe in combination with a big shed that would have happened anyway. If it continues to decline in thickness, I would maybe have it checked out (blood work). One can be deficient in something for quite some time before obvious symptoms appear. Hair fall may be the first symptom of something else.
It could just be your body is adjusting to your new lifestyle, routines and diets. Maybe newer, more healthy hair is dying to grow in and so the old must go! (ok that is probably a load of bull but...it sounds nice LOL).

It is true that I too have had more intense stresses than just recently but I wasn't an LHCer then and probably wouldn't have noticed hair shedding at that time. Plus my hair was short.

Seasonal sheds won't make you lose almost an inch of your circumference. No way!
I'm thinking the diet is the major culprit. If it's too rigorous for your own particular set of circumstances, your hair *will* suffer. People with anorexia for instance or people who go on rigorous diets will lose a lot of circumference!

I did, I went from 3.5" to 3" between mid-September and mid-October. Now I have perky little tufts of regrowth poking up everywhere. :)

That's good to hear, QMacrocarpa. Glad it is all regrowing! Gives me encouragement!
