View Full Version : 4 Year Anniversary- LOADED WITH PICS

I joined 4 years ago but decided to throw a retro picture for fun. Who doesn't love pictures?

This was my hair in 2002: It had been dyed auburn about a year previous I think and freshly cut into a bob of sorts (it was a dual layer bob)
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/Anniversary%20Pics/hair2002.jpg

When I joined I started out somewhere between waist and hip (closer to waist) and could no longer take proper care of my hair, until I found TLHC:The bottom half of my hair was dyed, bleached, dyed and re-dyed until it resembled my root color.
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/Anniversary%20Pics/Hair2April2009.jpg

This is about a year later in March 2010: Right after I took this picture I began using sun-in to lighten my increasingly dark roots:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/Hair3-23-10.jpg

I hit TBL December 2010 (and kept growing).
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/TBLish.jpg

This is my 2nd anniversary pic, April 2011 creeping in on classic.
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/Anniversary%20Pics/sig.jpg

I hit barely-classic around fall 2011 with an uneven hemline.
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/DSC00787b.jpg

Then cut back to TBL again October 2011, that is a year's worth of roots there:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/PostTrimOct15-11335x800.jpg

I had made it back to Classic by April 2012, my 3rd anniversary.
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/DSC01346aJPG.jpg

I have trimmed about once a year, sometimes 4", sometimes a half inch. My last trim was November, just about 3/4" after I had passed Classic. I am working on FTL now, still about 2" short though appear to be already there, my roots are now around 13-14" long, 2.5 years after I started growing out my virgin hair again, all of the old dye/bleach from year 1 has been trimmed out at this point:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Monthly%202013/April1fR-2013_zps9c5a998b.jpghttp://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Monthly%202013/April1R-2013_zps34b425a3.jpg

Classic was my real goal and I have been pretty unhappy with my hair since then. As of right now, I intend to cut back to TBL and will likely either maintain there or go a bit shorter. My ultimate goal is to have all virgin waist or hip length hair. The sun-in was fun but it did not work well with my complexion at all. AT ALL. My now old, bleached ends are becoming thin and brittle and my hair is noticeably thicker above my demarcation line. Amazingly, I have been split-free for almost a year and a half. I have been babying my hair!

Roots v. ends:

But my hair naturally fades with age so my ends v. older virgin hair is not that stark:

I'm naturally a blonde, and when I was a kid I NEVER saw long-haired blondes. I always wanted to be one. I saw a girl who had SUPER long blonde hair, I was about ten and I just sat and GAWKED. I still remember her. I'm 24 now.

Your hair reminds me of her quite a lot, I absolutely love your hair -- it's so beautiful.

Your such a inspiration to me so many people think you cant have really long hair if your hair is on the finer side but you just prove you can. I just hope my looks as good as yours at that length. I know you've been thinking about cutting for quite a while what ever you decide it will look lovely.

You have amazing hair, happy anniversary. :) How exactly did you get the paranda waves? Just by doing a damp plait with a paranda? I've never used one before, so sorry if it's a silly question. It looks absolutely stunning on you, if it were me I'd be wearing my hair like that all the time. :flower:

You have such lovely hair, I often have to pick my jaw up when I see it <3 I like your natural roots too, the way it sunfades I'm sure you'd look lovely with virgin hair, even if the roots end up a little darker than the rest. Thanks you all are very generous with your compliments! I often wish I could see my hair as others do..to me it is just a tangly pain. I am in desperate need of warmer weather so I can wear it down a few times without the static or the wind blowing it everywhere so I can hopefully like my hair again.

Your hair looks amazing. PLus I think you are FTL already. (I Know the danger of the sideways shot myself - I think a lot of people would need to reclassify their length if it was all judged on the sideways shot!)

I had DH measure my fingertips against the wall (I have a wall marked with all the milestone hair-measurements) and then I can stand against the wall and see. DH says I have about half an inch to go, but if you go by the measurements, I am shy by 2". Only little kids would be close enough to my rear-end to tell on a given day anyway LOL. I did take a lower shot: (My hemline is not really that ragged, it just did not want to behave yesterday and I was short on time to get these pics taken)

That was 3 french-braid paranda plaits:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/DSC01971600x800_zps999ffe39.jpg

And this was after I secured the front with a barrette to wear for the day:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/DSC01981600x800_zps977d06c0.jpg

I always damp braid my hair. Actually, I have a spray I use that is just diluted AVG and I thoroughly spray the braids as I go down and then after they are finished. They are not sopping wet but they are decently damp. The AVG helps the waves to stay set pretty much all day unless I brush it. Ooooh, I should get a pic of that sometime....the CL length POOFBALL my hair becomes after brushing those bad boys out! I always play with my hair a bit when I do, I will grab the bottom like 8" and make a pom-pom with it LOL and wave it in whoever's face happens to be close by. My daughter's friends are always amazed with my hair even when it looks horrid. They are easy to impress (teenagers).

This is what just one paranda braid does to my hair:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/DSC01329a.jpg

Still pretty nice but that was not a french braid, just a single braid starting from the nape.

I really adore the braid waves and it makes wearing my hair loose so much easier and less tangle-prone. It just doesn't look as buttery smooth as when it is straight. Parandi have really given me an edge to keep growing because my regular braids usually fuzz out so bad I cannot wear them more than an hour. With parandi, they pretty much never fuzz out. We just spent two days at Busch Gardens and my hair was in a paranda braid both days all day and I never had to even look at it. It was great. I just tuck my braid in my shirt for rides and, if I need to, tie the ends of the paranda to my belt loops to keep the braid down. I am a huge parandi fan! It keeps the ends of my hair from repetitive elastic damage since I don't put the elastic on my actual hair AND it adds length to my braid if I desire. (parandi=plural, paranda=singular).

And just for funzies I will show you what my hair REALLY looks like when I don't primp it for photos:
This is my hair air-dried (photos taken over a year ago):
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/Messydry1.jpg
And detangled after air-dry:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/messydry2.jpg

And here is how thick my braid was before the sun-in took it's toll and thinned my hair:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/P1030612.jpg

This is a good year later. It is even thinner now (hmm, haven't taken any recent braid pics). My circumference is almost an inch less now than it was before the sun-in. Bleach damage can take years to show up!
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/DSC00679_640x480.jpg

And two more for the one who likes the different angles of my hair: This is draped over my arm and looking down:
http://i393.photobucket.com/albums/pp17/Poetry4me75/Hair/P1030599.jpg

I hate this photo but oh well:

It was easier to wear loose in that length area and still be able to do pretty much any up-do.

HA HA lol This made me laugh! I would never do a stacked bob! Oh my I should dig out the photo of my pixie back in 1998 and scan it for everyone. I looked horrid. LOL.

You have truly, amazing hair. I have still have your TB pic in my mind and right now, that is my goal. I am amazed because in your most recent pics, your hair looks so much healthier than the shorter pics. and the sun in ends don't have splits? astonishing.

I know you have a long, silk sleep cap that you made. What are your other healthy hair care techniques? Care to share?

I know you have a long, silk sleep cap that you made. What are your other healthy hair care techniques? Care to share?

Mostly the standard stuff, BUT, I didn't do any of these things before TLHC:
Sleep cap, silk pillowcases
Non-metal elastics
Protect ends in updo's as much as possible
Detangling carefully
Do my best to keep my hair from mechanical damage caused by coats, zippers, seatbelts, etc.
No heat styling. Ever. I had actually stopped using a curling iron about a year before TLHC. I have never used a flat-iron in my life.
(I still blow-dry my hair occasionally, usually before pictures as you can see, my air-dried hair is not as stick straight.)
I damp braid and bun my hair quite a bit. I am not sure if this is helpful or not.
I try not to brush or detangle my hair very much, just usually once in the morning and once before bed.
I do NOT S&D. For me it made splits worse, even with brand new quality scissors.
I never swim. I don't like it anyway.

I use a tangle teaser and wide-tooth bone comb. I also have a wood comb. These are the only things I use on my hair. BBB's were not for me. I don't oil my hair. I kept trying it (with dozens of oils) and kept hating it so I finally gave up. I do use a sleeking/smoothing serum made my Garnier Fructis. It is discontinued now but I have several bottles left. I use it inconsistently and not much at all in summer.

I wash my hair twice a week (average) and use Pantene Ice Shine S&C. I use Joico chelating shampoo about once a month when I feel my hair needs it (I use it to clarify as well). I detangle my hair before getting in the shower and during the conditioning part. I do a deep conditioning every other month or so. I just did one yesterday....MAJOR improvement. This winter has been hard on my hair. I probably should have been deep-conditioning more. What I use varies. Pretty much any conditioner will do. I have done the home-made concoction once (eggs, mayo, honey, etc.). It worked well but was nasty LOL.

I eat pretty healthy (though excessively) and I eat a lot of protein. Not because I try to, but because I love meat and eggs. I also eat a lot of vegetables. I love salads and raw veggies. I take vitamins occasionally but not consistently.

I am pretty amazed at my lack of splits. I am guessing it is my high protein diet?

*looks at your hair care list and makes lots of notes* :) I am very curious, how did S&D make splits worse? Did you find they just kept re-splitting or..? Mine seem never ending over here hehe.

WaitingSoLong
April 2nd, 2013, 12:31 PM
cathair I felt they kept re-splitting. Once I stopped S&D the splits would just break off and they were fine after that. ymmv

It took too much time anyway and hurt my neck/eyes.

Thanks for the reply. :) I think I might try a paranda/parandi braid sometime when I get round to it. I quite like plaits and it might save me some damage.

It's interesting what you say about the split ends, because I feel like the S&D leads to more bent ends for me, and maybe more splits too, I'm not sure. I feel like my hair was in better condition before I tried to improve it sometimes. :s Just need to convince myself to leave the splits alone for long enough to see if it makes a difference I guess. And I can't seem to get oils to work for me either, glad I'm not alone. Love all the pics, hope you don't cut it off too short, obviously it's your hair and you should do what makes you happy, but long hair really suits you. That said I am sure waist would look just as lovely. :)

Schweedie I love YOUR hair! lol

Thanks everyone

You all have been so kind with your comments it will definitely keep me from cutting for awhile LOL. Wooly, The fact my hair is pretty healthy other than the reduction in thickness from the sun-in is encouraging. I am really curious what all-virgin hair at this length would look like on me. The desire for all virgin hair is really driving me in my hair decisions and fuels my desire to cut.

It took me forever to put together the original posts but I figured I owed it to you guys since on my last anniversary I didn't post ANY pictures. I just realize I went from TBL to FTL in about 18 months.

ghost: I had regular trims and cuts until about 6 years ago (2007) when I decided to let it get long. I honestly cannot recall how long my hair was at that point, I didn't even care about hair length then but it was probably APL or so as that was my "default" length off and on over the years. I remember seeing a girl whose hair covered her bosom quite nicely and I thought...I want that...and then I just began to grow. Once my hair got that long I started getting comments on my hair (people like the color mostly). I had pretty long hair back in 1996 when my second son was born. I have pictures of my pregnancy and my hair is covering my bosom, and I kept growing for awhile after that, probably another year and had a piggy-back perm before I cut it back because I could not get it detangled after washing (I hadn't learned any hair care techniques). By the time I had my daughter in 1998 I had gone all the way to the only pixie I have ever had. The pictures are so horrid LOL. I grew it out immediately because of all the negative comments I got. That was a huge time of transition for me in life and I basically just "forgot" about my hair for a few years (divorce, relocation). I know in 2000 it was shoulder length with a leftover perm. I permed it again I think in 2001. I actually look decent with a perm. I used to love wearing it in a banana clip LOL. I think 2001 was the last time I permed it.

I keep threatening to scan all my old pictures and make a hair history but it is too much work.

I know that hair normally grows quite a few inches a year and gets longer, nothing odd or unusal about that, but when I compare your picture from 2002 and 2013, it's still quite jawdropping to see the difference. I know it's you in both pictures, but still...The differece in length, color and texture is so huge that it's quite difficult to understand that it is the same person! Seeing your progress really shows how great an impact hair can have, I mean, you have one of the most recognizable head of hairs now, and understandably so! I just love your natural highlights, they are truly spectacular. I enjoyed all of your pictures. In the straight out of bed picture, you look quite amazed at how gorgeous your hair looks, the camera lense looks like a mouth:) And spectacular it is!!

Oh, I almost forgot, happy 4 year anniversary!

HA HA I did that on purpose, I got the idea from another LHC member ;)

Thanks for your lovely comments.

My hair averages 6" a year since I have been measuring though I only got 5" last year. I get about 1/2" per month, but last month I only got 1/4". If 5" a year is my new rate I will be mad!

If I ever figure out how to blot out my face I would scan in and post pictures from my pixie. I am too embarrassed to put the actual photo on the internet! lol

I'm relieved to hear that the "camera mouth" was staged:) Your eyes looks really surprised too, so I guessed it was on purpose. Still, I was a bit hesitant to mention it, because I would feel really bad if you hadn't planned it and got annoyed with me for saying it. Humour is a funny thing, you know...we don't all smile and laugh at the same things, but luckily we are on the same page.

I would LOVE to see a picture of your pixie. The wow factor would be even greater!! On the other hand, I'm already wow'ed out by your pictures so maybe more wow's would be to much for me and send me :thud: And I have jaw problems as well, so I don't know if I can take more jawdropping at this point...

I'm glad you got a LOL out of my silliness:D I think you are the only one who have lol'ed me here on TLHC and I'm usually not a lol-inducer either:)

Anyway, I didn't get much sleep last night so that must be the reason for my goofiness...

Sorry for clogging up your thread with nonsense:o

:thudpile::crush: Loved all of your pictures. It's amazing what your length looks like from the front... it's so awesome! You have amazing hair, the length is one thing but the condition it's in makes it over the top. You have officially inspired me to grow longer.

Happy anniversary, WSL!

Your hair is truly stunning. :thud:

I really like your natural color, too.

My four-year anniversary is coming up in September, but I've not made nearly as much progress as you. :p

I had no idea that you'd ever had your hair so short, WaitingSoLong! The difference between 2002 and present is simply astounding! Thank you so much for posting all of the progress you've made- makes the rest of us "shorter" ones feel like it won't take forever and a day to reach our goals!

Actually, yes it is. :D

It's also an inspiration for those who do not have thick voluminous hair. While YOU may know that your hair has thinned from the sun-in, others simply see it's beauty as is. Also, I love your natural highlights.

Unicorn what hate about my hair is that I cannot wear it loose really, it tangles easily and floats everywhere. Yesterday DH stepped on my braid tassle again (we were fixing the plumbing under a sink). I admit it looks great in pictures but it lacks in practicality/wear-down-ability. In "motion" it is unruly and doesn't look lovely at all. All my pics are smoothed and primped. The second I move I have to re-smooth and primp.

LOL. I wore it loose today while I went galabanting (<-- apparently not a word, I don't think I have ever spelled that out before, a family term, maybe?) around town. It behaved OK until the wind would blow. Gave me a good idea for a short comic strip or two. I shall have to get my pad and pencil out and see if I can sketch it and scan it in LOL.

When my hair is loose it and a breeze blows, it can move a lot like a reverse-action shot in a movie, reaching out ahead of me in slow motion tentacles, then sucking back into a big tangle. LOL MEDUSA comes to mind.

Don't feel bad, I mishear things all the time. Especially if the person I hear it from in the first place doesn't pronounce it properly. It's even worse with foreign languages because you don't hear the sounds in the same way as a native speaker. It can be fun though. The phrases in this article are more amusing: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/4799157/Damp-Squid-The-top-10-misquoted-phrases-in-Britain.html

HA that was interesting. I say most of those correctly, I am proud to say, except the glitters on and the find-a-pin, never heard of a damp squib though. Or damp squid. Made me feel a bit better about myself LOL.

We once use to frequent a site called "misheard lyrics" and it was hilarious what people thought some songs were saying. The site could still exist, I haven't checked. It is user driven. Me and the kids got a few giggles out of some of the mistakes. To this day we still refer to them whenever we hear the corresponding songs. One example is a song by Evanescence where she says "My God, my tourniquet" was misheard as "My God, my turnip kid" which is ridiculous but we still call it the Turnip Kid song.

WSL your hair is so beautiful! It seems to be getting thicker as it gets longer. Your hair is a real inspiration!
Mine the longer that it gets the thinner the hem is. I have been trimming every month for 2 yrs. trying to thicken up the length & maintaining at hip length but it just seems to stay the same thickness :(

I should take a few pictures of the difference in my thickness as it goes down the length sometime. The last foot is REALLY thin, so thin I cannot really measure it to see the circumference. It is under 1" that is for sure.

I have not seemed to hit that place where my hair gets so thin I have to keep it trimmed back. I am not sure I will ever find it, as I am not sure how much longer I will let it grow, but I have estimated my terminal length to be around calf length. However, since my virgin hair is much thicker, it could be longer than that. But it is just a guess either way.

You have beautiful hair. I am in awe of the styles. :thudpile:
Ed

Ed, one of these days I will re-upload pictures to albums. I tried once and no matter what I did it said it was the wrong size and I grew weary of trying. I deleted my old albums because it irked me they were unviewable and I have doubt our pictures will ever magically come back. I have so many pictures, I think I have taken one of every style I have ever tried, whether it was wearable or not. MOST of them are on CD somewhere. I didn't get my first digital camera until about a year after joining.
