I've been watching "Vikings" on the History Channel, and besides being an awesome show the hairstyles are pretty awesome :D

There's a ton of great inspiration, and the main character's wife Lagertha has some pretty neat braiding done. And there's some really manly braiding for our LHC guys!

There's a short video on the history channel website about the hairstyling for the show:

YES YES YES I NEED THIS THREAD. INSTANT APPROVAL.

But c'mon, just Lagertha? What about Ragnar's awesome braid? Or Erik and Rollo's nice locks? I know they aren't as intricate, but still gorgeous! Speaking of which, this is probably a dumb question, but is there a certain way that the male characters pin their hair up in half-ups so that it drapes the way it does? I just can never get mine to fall like that, but I'd like to.

Pull the sides out a bit to balance the upper half of your head.

And while the acting isn't special, I LOVE that the Viking guys are clean and well-groomed like they were historically recorded to be! I would totally date them all just for the hair.

-showing my styling incompetence-
I'm not sure what you mean.

Uh... Make your ponytail, then tug at the sides to loosen them up a bit.

Most people think they don't look good with half-ups because their hair looks glued to the scalp, but a couple of tugs or just a loose ponytail is all you need to avoid that.

Oh, I know I look good in half-ups, mine are just always so high up (though loose-ish), which I do like, but I also wanted to "master" the low style like I posted. I think that was the clue I needed though, lol - I've been doing mine with pins, but I guess I need to do it with a pony tail or braid. Heh, like I said, I am really incompetent. But thank you. :o

No problem. However you secure your half-ups, just tug at the sides before/after it's secured to get the right kind of drape.

I have very thick black hair that doesn't always behave right, so I spend a lot of time tweaking hairstyles.

I love Vikings! I drool over everything in it! I love Rolo! OMG!

Did you know Floki is Vampire Eric's brother (from True Blood) in real life? He's so tall and lanky!

All the Skarsgård's children are tall and lanky, all 8 of them;) Well, it might be a tad bit early to tell for the two youngest, but still:D

Oh yes, true, but this one seems taller (in pictures) than the rest, and isn't as muscular. I was talking with DH and said he looked a but like a marionette!

I got curious and looked it up. Gustaf Skarsgård is 2 meters, which I think is about 8 cm taller than Alexander. And it seems they're all on the thin side, unless they work out.

I'm gonna have to watch this show now. I've had the first ep on my computer for a while, but I never got around to watching it.

I just came across this today, and it seems like the perfect thing to try on a lazy Sunday afternoon! Your tutorial was very easy to understand, and I like all the options you gave at the end for securing the pony :)
