View Full Version : If You Could Only Have One Hair Fork/Stick, Which Would You Choose?

I'm growing my hair (1c, C, iii) back out to its terminal length. I've decided that a well-chosen hair fork or stick might actually make updos tolerable. My hair has low porosity and lots of slip. Can you make a recommendation? Which ONE would you take to a desert island? And which updos would you wear it in? Thank you!

60th Street Lynn or Barb (3 prong) 6"

If I could only have one hairtoy, I think that's it.

Thanks. Favorite updos with Lynn or Barb?

I don't have any of those but I'd like to have my side combs.

I used to wear those in the 1970s.

I would take my 60th street fork (3 prong). It is comfortable to wear, and can be used for detangling if no comb is available. :)

Oh, that's nice, I hadn't thought about it. Favorite updos with it?

I would really appreciate a few comfortable updos held with a fork or stick. My head hurts from a simple ponytail! Thanks, everyone. It's so good to have someone to ask.

Thats a VERY tough one. Pry either my lilac water acrylic sticks because they're waterproof or my favorite hair fork.

If you have fine, slippery hair, I HIGHLY recommend these! They hold like a rock and she makes custom sizes and woods.

Curly/screw hairsticks are wonderful for slippery hair. I love my Ketylos, usually wear them in a nautilus, lazy wrap or cinna bun

I know you didnt ask me but ketylos are made of acrylics, dymondwood, and other woods. I have a pair in vineyard. :)

Thanks a lot. I really like the Ebony fork, and they have an updo-how-to section, too.

Me, I would pick my Grahtoe antler wishbone. http://www.etsy.com/transaction/121159456? (Not mine, looks like the only ones they have currently for sale are the fancy inlaid onces, which are more expensive.)

It holds really well and it can get wet, unlike my wooden stuff. I usually use it in a nautilus bun or similar, very comfortable.

Hmm, thanks for that I snagged a pair of those lilac sticks before they run out.

I really like natural materials like antler. I'm glad to hear that it is waterproof and holds well.

I would choose my three prong ebony hair fork (I think it's a 60th St, but honestly can't remember!). I use it to do lazy wrap, everyday, and flipped buns. My hair has lots of slip too and is fine, but the fork holds!

I would actually pick a Ficcare Maximas over a stick or fork because they fit under hats and hoods better in the winter! I can even go running with them.

If I were picking one fork, I'd likely choose a three prong 60th St. For a single stick I would go with http://www.etsy.com/shop/TimberstoneTurnings Not cheap but they work a treat! The thicker sticks work better if I am using a solo, otherwise I buy in pairs. Really though, if you are growing to terminal, it is likely you will have many more than one by the time you reach your destination! The sticks and forks that work best for me now are not the same ones that worked at bsl or even classic.

For slippery hair I find the updo itself is just as important as the tool you hold it up with. You might try braided buns or styles like the Gibraltar or Nautilus bun first. An absolutely bombproof style that doesn't even need a fork or stick (though you can always adorn it anyhow!) is the Modified Ellingwoman Braid.

Thank you so much! I'll take a look at the Modified Ellingwoman Braid.

I'd have to take my 5" Eaduard acrylic sticks. So far, they're the best holding and durable thing I have I think. :)

My 6" stainless steel (hollow) chopstick. That would also be my Desert Island hairtoy!

After much deliberation, I think I have to go with my RavensCroft moon! It's so unique and dead easy to use once you get the hang of it.

GrowingGlory
March 25th, 2013, 06:08 AM
Does the stainless steel chopstick change in temperature with the weather? How heavy is the RavensCroft moon?

Nini
March 25th, 2013, 06:22 AM
I doubt you'd feel the temperature change with the steel chopstick, but I don't know for sure.

Choosing between a fork or a hairstick I'd go for my Mamacat custom two-prong fork. If I was heading to a desert island I'd grab a Ficcare Max though:)

I've got fine hair that needs a firm 'do to stay up. And I'm lazy, so it's usually a cinnabun of some sort.

I can't see anything at all that people are choosing.
They simply aren't there in the first post.

If I was going to a desert island, I'd bring a spin pin. Those things are amazing for their size. For sticks I'd use whatever was lying around! lol

GrowingGlory
March 25th, 2013, 07:41 AM
I like my Goody spin pins but am hoping that a stick or fork will make my updos painless. Be sure not to use poison ivy, oak or sumac as a hair stick on the island.

This is a tough call. But I am going to go with my 5 inch Eduard mint water hair stick:

Can be purchased here:
http://www.etsy.com/listing/120668369/acrylic-hair-sticks-you-pick-water?ref=shop_home_active

I choose it because it is sturdy, waterproof, matches with a large variety of clothing, and I can do all of my favorite buns with it. For the time being, I am only able to do a pencil bun, nautilus, and infinity, but I am working on perfecting more.

It complements your hair so beautifully. Does it ever move or slip out of your hair?

I am NOT shutterpillar, but I do have about 30 of Ead's sticks, and can easily tell you that they don't move or slip. They're also colorful, waterproof, well priced, and durable. I've dropped mine many a time and no broken sticks yet!

I'm agreeing with LHB - they do not slip. :) I have fine ii hair, too, so it's not like I have much hair to grip it with. lol. They definitely stay in place, though if your hair is thicker I might suggest getting a longer stick to accommodate for the extra volume.

Once it is in, not much. Solid sticks hold a lot more heat/cold, and are much heavier.

Thanks, guys. The world of forks and sticks is fascinating and new to me.

I'd take my Lady Idun. Acrylic so it stands up to water and holds REALLY well.

One of these days I'm getting an acrylic from Eaduard Hairsticks to compare though.

Sunshineliz
March 25th, 2013, 11:07 AM
It depends on how well I've done the bun. :) They mostly stay though, but it took some experimentation to find out what worked best. My first successful bun and still the most secure is the wrapped hairstick bun, like in my siggy.

Ketylos, no contest. Nothing else comes close for me.

March 25th, 2013, 11:55 AM
Yeah I probably have to vote ketylos too. They reliably hold a bun all day and are okay to use on wet hair. Also pretty! But I've just got a load more sticks and my first forks and ficarres so I might change my mind...

Thanks. Favorite updos with Lynn or Barb?

Wow! Did this thread ever grow in a day!
My favourite updo doesn't have a name, it's a kind of exploded nautilus. Don't have a pic handy of it in a fork either.
Second favourite updo is probably the Lazy Wrap Bun. Here it is in a 60th Street Charcoal Ruby Dymondwood Lynn.

And here is Barb (Field and Stream Dymondwood, 6"), being devoured by a Pha Bun, another favourite of mine.
