Updos for BSL hair with a ponytail anchor?

My hair is BSL, fine, very "stiff" (it doesn't like to bend and will pop right out of any high-twisting styles.) I have found that I cannot wear any updo comfortably unless it is anchored with a ponytail. I have no updo ability and have just been wearing a bun that wraps around from the base of the ponytail with no twisting, held with a large Ficcare Maximas. Oh, and to make it more complicated, bobby pins/screw pins are useless and my hair spits them out. Any ideas with these ridiculous restrictions?

You might have to wear it down or pony tail. You may not have a choice.

How about a lazy wrap bun? I almost always anchor my buns with a ponytail. You could use your ficcare, though In my experience a flexi-8 works even better. Have a look at some YouTube tutorials, it's quite easy to master :)

Hmmm I know what you mean. My hair is pretty stiff too and spits out bobby pins.
French braids are okay with me. And what about hair sticks/forks? A bun secured with two hairsticks for example?

Have you tried a topsy tail and it's variations? There are demos on utube and there is a book out[check amazon or ebay] all on different hairdos using a topsytail as the starting point.It's called ''The topsytail book-the guide to dozens of easy to do,quick, and fabulous hairstyles'' by Tomima L.Edmark[out of print but still available on the net-I bought one last year]Utube shows how to make your own topsytail gadget or you can buy them off the net,and Claires is selling them right now.

Is your hair thick and stiff? Because I had the same problem at BSL with stiff hair that doesn't like bending 3.5" + pony circumference. For me the only updos I could do was a high pony tail base, wraping the pony around the base with only slight twisting (other wise it would eat up to much length and not wrap around properly). Then secure with bobby pins sliding down through the out side of the coil away from the base, then twist back grabbing scalp hair outside the bun and pushing until the bulk of the bobby pin was between my head and the ponytail holder. Which pretty much sounds like what you are already doing. I could do other stuff once my hair got to MBL, now I do almost 8 buns with forks. Sometimes you just have to wait for more length, especially if you have thick hair. Good luck!

How about the cheaters' easy hairstick bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=25145)? The instructions there say to use a bobby pin to secure the tail, but you may not find it necessary to anchor the tail; I didn't.

If you can secure a bun with a couple of claws, I sometimes do that with a nautilus bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS-BQ5OMV2Y), which isn't very twisty. A small claw on each side and it's comfy and secure all day.

Perhaps a Gibson tuck (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmZR-PlJ_AU) with the top secured with a hair-friendly barrette. There's a pretty side-swept variation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5_uWxSHXWic) too.

What about braiding? Can you get away with doing a French or Dutch braid, then securing it into a bun? I do this all the time.

Sounds like my DH's hair :p It's midback length, very thick, coarse Japanese hair. Every once in a while he lets me try and put it in a bun or something, and if I just do a basic cinnabun from a ponytail, bobby pins pop out everywhere. Braiding the ponytail seems to work better, since the braid gives the pins something to grip. Hair sticks and forks work nicely, too.
For my own hair, my favorite bun is a rose bun from a ponytail. I've made it work on DH's hair, but an 3-strand braided bun is easier, since a 3-strand braid holds tighter than a rope braid.

Nope, didn't work - not long enough for the thickness to get it wrapped around and it fell out instantly.

Hairsticks don't hold unless I put them in so tight that it is very painful.

I didn't think it was that thick but I guess it is because nothing is working other than this basic bun with a Ficcare. Pins never work. So I did measure my ponytail circumference and it was 3.25". I guess I have more hair than I thought? I had my thickness marked as i originally and then started to think maybe it is i/ii but what is 3.25"?

I will have to try this. I think it might work since a pony tail is possible.

It doesn't really like braids - it doesn't want to make the bends unless I make it very loose/low tension and then it slithers out. Plus my braid is only 7 "bumps" long and too short to wrap around.

The rose bun might work. Rope braids do hold on my hair. I will try that.

I'm pretty sure 3.25" is a solid ii.

Since the thickness is too much for some of these buns, maybe try splitting your hair into 2 or 3 sections and bunning them individually.

It was too long to get it into the pocket created in the Gibson tuck. Is there a way to "cheat" a Gibson tuck with longer hair?
With longer hair it can help to start with a higher ponytail, so the pocket is larger.

In the cheaters' easy hairstick bun the hairstick is held in place because it's placed behind the elastic of the looped ponytail, so it might work better for you than conventional hairstick buns.
