As far as I can tell, the articles are still down, so I'm soliciting suggestions for a new bun style here. My hair is now just slightly beyond fingertip length and while a locked bee-butt/Nautilus variation is still workable for me, I'm starting to get headaches every time I put it up for very long due to the weight. Anyone have any ideas for a bun that would distribute the weight better?

Maybe the vortex bun? You could also braid the strands for extra hold.

My buns I can do are limited, but one of my favorite things to do is just go on you tube, search a bun I know, then go from there and watch all of the other suggested videos that seem similar or look interesting. I learned that way that I could do a lot more buns than I thought. It also was a good way to learn about buns that I want to do in the future with longer hair.

Perhaps a braided Chinese bun (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n98D0j8Ypfg) starting with two separate braids? I've seen a version where you start with one ponytail and then make two braids, but I don't think that would distribute the weight as comfortably.

You might try the "upbraided" style, where you make one braid at your nape, clip it against the back of your head and make a bun on top of your head with the remainder of the braid. The bun is smaller, since some of your hair is in the part against the back of your head, and the bun location might help it pull downward less, since it can just rest on top of your head somewhat.

Another idea is to secure your bun differently. For instance, I can do a nautilus with a flexi-8 or stick where's there's kind of one area of support, but I can also secure it with two smallish claw clips, one clipped into each side plus some scalp hair, spreading the weight out. With big claw clips it can work for much longer hair than mine, as shown in this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCmz7TFwDkY), starting about 2:05.

I agree YouTube is great for hair ideas. I'd try that or try a braided bun style.
