Just use the regular markers, you can call BSL MidBackLength if you want, but everyone will understand if you say BSL.

It would take me a good 2 weeks to get to this stage, sebum only. I lightly oil with coconut.

Everyone has a different schedule, I could easily go 2 or 3 weeks between washes.

I love pampering myself, washing my hair is similar. And if my hair didn't take two or three days to dry, I might do the same.

I think I'll just shout out some gents on here! Just because I admire them a lot.

trolleypup on here has about floor right now, or else, it's close, and that's the longest I think any of the gentlemen on here have. I think of gumball too, who has superbly gorgeous curls.

I can sympathise; I have been dying my hair black since my late teens (I had lost my original naturally black colour around then), and later had my hair cut very short (I think it is called 'business classic' or something like that, side parted and slicked back), sort of a James Stewart or Éamon de Valera look, when I had to jump through some society/government standard hoops in order to access medical services I needed. I had intended to immediately grow it back afterwards, but the in-between length was so awkward, that, I kept trying to cut it in various ways, in an effort for it to not look so bad as it grew, and it wound up taking me years to get to shoulder-length again as a result.

Iyashikei

I first thought waist length but when thinking about it further I just grow it until I'm satisfied. Doubt it will be something like calf length though. Anyway, waist will be a long term goal already since I'm not even APL length yet.

I didn't cut my hair. The matting and lint were hiding a real problem - my terminal length has become very short. It used to be between waist and tailbone, but now appears to be APL. :(

I still have a lot of hair for a man my age. :)

They could possibly still be breaking off? Have you considered maintaining and seeing If anything changes?I am still getting breakage. The reason is that the hair had become twisted/folded over itself near the scalp, and lint had accumulated in the folds. Combing that out caused a lot of wear. Age may also be a factor.

EdG, have you ever considered using an air filtration unit in your dwelling to remove crap from the air? You could make one from some furnace air filters and a box fan

Air and water are the two "products" everyone uses most on their hair, without even thinking

I'm sorry to hear. Do you think cutting the breakage away could maybe help? It could otherwise become something of a vicious circle I think. Sure, it will set you back lengthwise but at least you start tabula rasa.

The mats have been next to the scalp. This is why they have taken so long to remove. I can tell that my hair is free-flowing.

No, I don't think so. It is still growing..... But the trims have allowed some of the stragglers to catch up and now my ends are thicker and more blunt than before. Which is fine with me; I'd rather have thick straight blunt ends at BCL than a bunch of thin random strands at classic length.

Hello everyone,

I've been letting my hair grow for about a year or so now. Prior to letting it grow, I had been getting it styled with a couple inches on the top, and about a #4 cut on the sides for many years. Right now, the hair on top is about 6" or so at last measurement. I've had a few trims during that time to try to keep it presentable during the growing out process, but I don't seem to have found a stylist who really seems to know what to do with my hair. I'm not sure if it's because I'm a guy, or just my curly hair in general. The last one I saw told me that she would cut some off the sides/back because that would allow the hair on top to grow, and that the hair on top would way down the hair on the sides to keep them sticking outwards.

I do wish I could find a stylist who could provide some guidance, because I'm not really sure what to do with it at this stage. I've decided not to go for a while because I do need to actually let it grow. But I think I'd feel better if there was a plan. Anyone have any thoughts, or experience growing similar hair out?

Welcome, and agree finding a supportive stylist is key. I got lucky with the one I've had, and stick to an every six months schedule now. My hair is not like yours, but I think many of the same things apply:

Envision what your long term goal might be - find short term and long term inspiration pics and keep them close at hand. Male or female - doesn't matter. Share them with your stylist.
Patience is key, you won't like what's going on every single day, but it gets better.
Let your stylist know what you DON"T want to see happen. i.e.: mullets etc.
Longer Viking styles might be fun to consider, and you already have that vibe going on.
Ignore (or at least tune out) feedback you might hear along the way. Everyone will have an opinion. Most of them don't matter.

Keep growing, and share your progress along the way! This is a community of believers.

I think the stylist is correct, I've seen ladies with curly hair grow out a pixie pretty nicely if it's longer on top and shorter on the sides. That's if you care about having a nice shape as it grows out. I think what is easiest for the overall health of the hair is to let it grow until it's long enough to cut the ends bluntly and then continue from there, so you have less layers to deal with as it grows out, because layers and curly hair can be tricky if you're actively trying to retain length. Hope that helps!

I think your hair is going to look really nice the longer it gets.
