Hair in my first decent braid :D
http://i.imgur.com/jKz81Lo.jpg

and some kinda length pic (well, with some fantasy type of braid in it, but still a pretty good length shot)

Btw, im glad this thread got revived after being off my radar for some weeks :D

Man, you really have great hair by any standard, I'd be very proud of that :D Mine is not so great, thus I've not had it long in a while…. I like the braid fantasy type braid too very cool. :D Takes some guts to wear in public I imagine. I've always felt long hair looked good on both men and women and that beautiful hair is simply that. Does your girl support you in this long-hair endeavor? Mine did not :(

Thanks man, and yes, first i didnt like the idea of goin outside with braids and stuff, but then i just thought "They're gonna stare anyways, so why not?"
And for my girflriend to support my hair? I'd first need a girlfriend for that ;)

Yep.

In my mind, for someone staring my way:

1) They don't approve, so they can get stuffed
2) They will forget about me well before the end of the day anyway
3) They like what they see

So don't be shy when wearing those braids, buns etc. You might even encourage someone to grow out their hair. Someone who was a bit unsure, but liked what they saw, decided to go for it, and ended up a little happier in the long run. Worked for me. :)

Then, I found that buns were less likely to attract attention than long hair worn loose. The effect is as though putting one's hair up in a bun causes it to become invisible... I think. ;)

You make a good point :D In fact, anymore with tats, piercings, extreme hairstyle and what not being so common nowadays, perhaps it's not such a big deal. Regarding a girlfriend, with rocking' hair like that the girls who like it will definitely want to talk to you :)

I love the possibility to completely hide my hair in a bun. No one ever imagines how long it is and I like that very much especially when I do not have time and the right mood to answer all these questions. Plus it is far easier manageable in a bun :)

BTW I see more and more men with buns normally combined with beards - like that trend ;)

Beards and long hair go together. A long time ago, I remember thinking "I haven't cut my hair in years, but I shave my beard every day". Didn't make sense. :silly: I haven't shaved since then.

I actually have very little experience shaving. If I've done it a hundred times in my life, I'd be surprised. I do trim the facials though. I don't want a ZZ Top beard.

I'm not sure that the last photo would be a good hair typing one. There are directions around here somewhere, but I'm pretty sure you're supposed to clarify, skip conditioner, don't manipulate it at all, and let it air dry for a typing pic.

Well yeah to proper hair typing,go for little to almost non styling manipulation and let it air dry. But I reckon you can either 1C to 2A, last pic looks like brushed out waves turned to straighter look.

All ye long-haired lions out there, with your handsome manes, what kind of jobs do you do? Does anyone go to work in an office environment suited, booted and man-banned (or any other bun)? I just wondered if the prevalence of the man-bun has made it more acceptable for office types to grow their hair out. I see a fellow commuter on the bus who wears a suit and has hair which just touches his shoulders.

EdG

humble_knight - I am an engineer. I am an exception in that I have had long hair for so many years that I surprised my co-workers the first time I showed up at the office with my hair in a bun. ;)

I have never worn a suit, though.

I am also an engineer. I work in a different industry than Ed. I went through engineering school with some long haired gentlemen. As long as their hair was kept professional(clean, not tangled, secured when required for safety, etc), it didn't cause them any problems. I'm working as a consulting engineer at the moment. So while I work in an office, I do visit the field sometimes and have to use a hardhat. As curious as I am to reach terminal, I am currently limited by the available headspace in the top of a hardhat for my braid to hide when I'm in industrial facilities. If I were actually working in an industrial facility every day, I would have to use a braid every single day thanks to the hardhat.

I don't quite match that profile. A uniform isn't a suit. Anyway, I work as an instructor for a rail transit division. Hair is usually up in a bun, but now and then I have it down. The culture at Muni is pretty much uncaring of hair length (or other physical characteristics) as long as you show up and do your job. Skills over appearance.

On the occasions where I've been front and center (driving the mayor and dignitaries on one of our open streetcars, etc.) I usually have my hair down. Never had any issues.

Let it grow! Let it grow! Don't shave it off anymore. Let it grow! Let it grow! Throw your razor out the door :D

What style of beard could he grow? If he tries for a full beard, let it grow in for at least a month then he could start lining and edging it up :)

Clean your mustache and beard somehow to get food out of it. Once it's long enough, mustache hairs will get into your mouth and you might take a bite out of your own hair and pieces of food might get stuck on your beard or mustache.

Never really timed it. Started really growing it back out about 2 years ago, but that was from a longish shag haircut and now it is about APL or so. So I guess probably average speed or maybe a little faster?

yahirwaO.o
February 3rd, 2016, 08:50 PM
So you are already APL! I thought you were starting from zero or short. I think your speed would be between average and fast.

I know most LHC ers feel APL like short, but that's my length and to me it feels like long hair without going everywhere when down!

Great man, just keep doing what is working for you!

Haha, miscommunication I guess. I used to have it about mid back so it still feels kind of short to me but it is starting to feel long, and it is definitely infinitely better than short hair.

Yeah, what he said. I've had "long" hair for decades, and I just wouldn't be me without it.

I've been struggling to get to APL for forever. But then, I've mostly been practicing abusive neglect. A practice that I'm trying to overcome.

Happy growing.

Hi all, I need some advice! :)

My sister's bf is growing his 1a/C/ii/iii hair from a buzzcut. It's been a year and he's now between chin and collarbone length. It looks great! Really healthy and shiny.
Anyway, it's the first time he's grown it out this long, and because it's very thick, straight and stiff, it's constantly hanging in his face. It's not quite long enough to hold in ponytails/buns for extended periods of time.

Do you have any haircare/hairstyling recommendations for him as he grows from this length onwards?

When mine was at that length, I struggled a lot, too.
Hairpins, maybe? At least until ponytails hold tight enough.
By his hairtype, I'm guessing he'll have a hard time with buns (at least until it's BSL/Waist, if he goes there).

Half up bun is a great option. Headbands, beanies, hats or bandanas in different ways are also options. Bobby pins are kinda intimidating but if you teach him how to hide them, he might kinda dig the look.

Slicked back gel look works for any guy. To be honest, its the worst stage for anyone with his hairtype (mine was like that and the most awful thing) Gets a lot easier as time and lenght goes by!

I may lurk here. My son decided he wants to grow his hair out from a buzz cut to ponytail length. At four he's too young to have a real hair type yet, but I think it is roughly 2a/F/ii. He's in for some awkwardness. When he was very little I used to put his hair in a "fountain" half-up right on top of his head whenever it was long enough to get in his eyes. I don't know if he'll be ok with that look now that he's in school. Right now it is just starting to grow over his ears, and the back seems to have an unfortunate natural rat-tail thing going on.

His stated hair inspiration is Lin-Manuel's Hamilton (photos 1 (https://cdn.theatlantic.com/assets/media/img/mt/2015/09/AP_248269138151/lead_960.jpg?1443545497) and 2 (http://static.celebuzz.com/uploads/2016/06/hamilton-061616.jpg)), so he might be ok with just greasing the ever-loving tar out of it.

His current routine is washing ever 2 or 3 (or 4...) days with a tiny amount of Johnson's baby moisture wash with shea and cocoa butter. At some point I'll have to reassess, but for the time being it seems to be ok.

Issue is that I don't even know what to expect. My hair takes many forms. I am starting to think that it's not cut out for being long especially since I only like it when it's somewhat hanging.
Here are a few examples.
http://i.epvpimg.com/kZ6pbab.jpghttp://i.epvpimg.com/tlRyfab.jpghttp://i.epvpimg.com/z0iTcab.jpg
I am not really into the second pic (dry, my most of the time hair). Iwish I had a hair type that would actually hang instead of curl and shrink.
I tried straightening haha but well I don't wanna damage my hair considering the process requires "some" heat.

Adding another mom lurking for her longhair boy! He's 8, and has been wanting long hair for ages. When he was about 6, he decided on an undercut (not a fan of brushing his hair, so it was our compromise), but he's been growing it out now since this past Christmas! The undercut is at shoulder, and the top is almost APL! He's wanting what I assume would be BSL (right under his shoulderblades), and has already told me that when it gets there I'll have to trim it. He's enjoying our nightly combing/story time, and he LOVES the sleep cap

Thanks awesome! My little guy (9) just donated his hair. He grew out 10 inches (from ponytail) then regretted cutting it. Not the donating part but cutting too soon. He had wanted to grow to hips so that when he cut it would still be long. He's growing out again. Mine likes to have brushed hair so he has to deal with the actual brushing part!

Update on my little monster ;)

He was at I'd say the abyss between CBL and BSL (bottom of shoulder-blade ;) ), but with a good 3 inches until his goal of BSL. His growing out undercut was brushing shoulder.

Now he's got about 2.5" to go, and his hair is starting to curl on his shoulders! He's very excited, but now I'm seeing just how wavy his hair is, which is... not something I have experience with LOL. We already CO wash, so I'm sure that helps! And he loves using the beard oil his dad got to try a new company's "coffee" scent. It smells more like very sugary cookies, and makes me think of Christmas! But it's much too sweet for either of us adults, so it's nice that it doesn't feel wasted (and he likes his hair smelling like cookies).

I should really measure his hair for him. I bet he'd love it as much as I do

ETA: Just measured his hair, and it's 21" for his goal! His undercut is at 15", and the longer top is at 18.5" (stretched, due to his waves).

Def MBL! Your waves are incredible!

Yeah he prefers it down! Whatever floats his boat, really. It's not particularly thick in the length, due to growing out his undercut, but now that I can get all of his hair into his scrunchie (he wants everyone to know that it's red, which is the best color ever), it's quite thick!! Takes after his dad, probably. I do wonder if his hair will become more coarse as he ages. It's still extremely fine right now, and I don't remember when my hair changed from fine to medium. I don't even know if it was ever fine past being an infant! But I think his dad has coarse hair. I honestly have no idea because the only hair he's ever had on his head in our nine years is on his face

and

I started there myself, though I don't use Reddit anymore. This reminded me to get a picture in different light, though.

Thanks! Thats one of the nicest compliments ive gotten

Hard to tell in that shirt, but you look like you're almost at waist length, even!! Great waves and looks really healthy

Much appreciated, i get the waves from my mom and i treat it very well; Going on almost 3 years sans-heat, never dyed or bleached. And sry for not replying sooner, i haven't been on since my last update.

Started from slick, shaved bald in January. Trying to figure out, while it's still "short" by long hair standards, how to style it.

First off welcome to LHC its a great place to pict up tips tricks and advice, ive certainly learned more than my fair share on the forums. Secondly, whoa that looks like some serious thickness. Judging by the second picture you should be able to stack buns if you wanted. At that length its experimentation, so have some fun with it. Beard's epic btw... far out of the realm of possibility for me.

Now if I could just figure out how to keep my beard from having split ends and breakage. My hair is flawless, but even beard oil isn't helping me keep the beard tips from becoming damaged.

My husband had tremendous luck on his beard ends using my oil blends of sweet almond oil and a few drops of essential oils for scent, better than the packaged stuff he said!

Great start, your curls will be amazing.

My fiance has started growing out his hair (thank goodness, he has such lovely hair and kept chopping it all off for a long time) and is at one of those awkward, hair does whatever it wants as long as it's the exact opposite as you want, in between stages. Not quite chin, longer than ears.

Any tips for styling (low maintenance though, he doesn't spend much time on it and wouldn't want to) or men's products that are very hydrating and smoothing? I've given him some of my reject products and the extra moisture works great but he doesn't like the floral and fruity smells.

I’m occasionally commenting on things here and there on fierceflow but find that most posters don’t actually want to learn about hair care, and it can get discouraging to try to help or offer wisdom or even just common sense stuff they may not know about yet and they don’t want to hear it. “I’ll do anything for long flowing hair!” Except care for it I guess. Haha. I hope that doesn’t come off as being salty at all, but it gets exhausting. I find myself going back to that subreddit mostly cause like here, growth centered encouragement is everywhere and that’s way better than the likes of /r/hair

Bump, I guess.

I'm new here, a guy who likes barrettes and scrunchies (aliexpress versions preferred, I don't like spending a lot). It's not that I'm as in love with long hair as some of you are, but at 70 I find it amusing, maybe a new hobby. (At 22, I grew it out to shoulder length, got snarled up sleeping, and figured it wasn't for me.) Pix when I get around to it, I don't have a cam or smartphone, can't the kids get off my lawn?.

I'm no gentleman but my brother, he has gorgeous BSL jet black hair with beautiful ringlets. I wish I got those genes, I envy his hair!
Also, he has a quite long beard for his age (you'd think he's in his 30's, but he's only 20 yo), jet black just like his hair, if I were a man, I'd be envious of his beard too!
I wanted to post a pic of his hair but sadly he hates photos with a passion :(

Just joined a week or so ago. another mid 50s guy that cut his hair years ago and thinking of regrowing. biggest 2 problems are that I'm mostly grey now, and think long grey hair on men is even less accepted than on younger guys, and the bigger problem is my wife who was semi-tolerant in the old days has become a vocal anti-longhair over the last couple years.

One question that I am trying to figure is what basic style(for loose hair) might look best. I basically try to go straight back from the forehead, and when it gets longer over the ears(it is still pretty thick), I usually side part on the left.

back in the day, I was(ok....gonna fess up here) 'rocking' the super mullet(I had my reasons...insane though I think of them now)...….but this time it would all be one length.

Hope there are some still watching this thread.

Well, gray hair is a point of contention for lots of us. In fact, Just For Men exists because lots of guys can't deal with the fact that age...happens.

I've always found that those who are comfortable in our own skin, those of us who embrace how we look, particularly natural, can radiate a confidence that looks so much better than those who try to hide it.

I considered dying my beard as it started to gray, but then I heard it described this way. Each white hair is another step towards becoming a wizard. Helped me to embrace my gray as a good thing, instead of viewing each gray hair as a mark of age and, to some small extent, shame.

There are two basic ways to present yourself. As you see fit, or as others expect. It really is that simple. Choose one.

As for your wife, that's between y'all. But I do wonder why she is specifically anti long hair. Length is only one aspect, grooming is an even bigger deal.

Start by identifying your hair texture. For instance, I never knew I had curly hair! Texture will affect the styles that look good on you.

Straight back, practically glued to the scalp, is pretty common. But it's hardly the only possibility.

And different styles work best at different lengths.

Hope there are some still watching this thread.

a couple days ago I wrote a missive replying to all here who posted since I did, and of course, since I linked it didn't pick up the remember me box...arghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

anyways, thanks to all that answered me.

To shrink my former post. have serious problems at home if I want to grow my hair out. I am on again off again about being totally confident in my look, etc…

I was trying to figure out what to tell my current stylist about styles to think about....I admitted to in the past having a 'super mullet'.....hey it was the mid/late 90s....but it did get to about 4 inches above waist when pulled straight.

this time it would be all or nothing. but, does it matter about basic style, brushed straight back, side part, bangs, what??????

sorry...but so much going on, it's hard to pick a path to go on.

thanks for all thoughts,

At what point of growing out did y'all cut it into a proper shape again? Did you trim the back while the front/top caught up, or did to leave it all until the highest hairs were at a good length and chop the rest to match?

I'm debating what I should do myself. Hat season is coming up so I could go either way, really

any advice besides 'product' for keeping it under control until ponytail length? to be honest, before I had a super-mullet, so I didn't have to worry about the front and top having to be tamed. This time, I'm all in. Using a coconut based curl maintainer for the days between washes. Not really into clips,etc....and I have to look at least semi professional during the week.

O.R.

Define semi-professional.

Curly hair introduces a randomness, and a volume, that many don't have to worry about. It's very beautiful, particularly at longer lengths, but it makes the awkward stages super awkward.

I'm not a huge fan of product. Usually when men make that suggestion, it means gluing all of your hair to your scalp. Please, for the love of God, don't do that.

A couple things that helped me at that length. Product. But I mean conditioner. I mean a light gel. Figure out what your hair does naturally, then use the gel to lock it into place. You're not trying to glue your hair down, you're trying to control some of the flyaways.

Mechanical assistance. Bobby pins for instance. Snap clips. Barrettes. There are thousands of styling options available, the ponytail just happens to be the go-to for most guys.

Believe it or not, braiding. I know, I know, but bear with me. Small multiple braids, an extreme version would be cornrows, can be done with remarkably short hair. An inch or less in some cases. The idea being that they wrangle the hair into an intentional style.

And understand that often less is more. slicking back the sides but leaving the top long and poofy is actually a very intentional look. Strive for achievable and intentional.

Like I said, you need to define semi-professional.

Be open to an attitude adjustment, not in a bad way, but more like opening your eyes to possibilities you had not considered previously.

Men can wear practically any style that we want. So long as our hair actually permits it, and it is worn intentionally and with confidence.

If you don't rock the look, it actually draws attention to you. Your fidgeting, your own discomfort, will draw attention to the thing that you find uncomfortable.

Someone comfortable in their own skin, or their own hairstyle, tends to be more widely and easily accepted. No matter what that style is.

CJK,

Thanks for the ideas. Semi-professional means I work on an air force base, but as a contractor. There are some guys with longer hair, but usually back in a pony. I understand what you're saying about 'greasing' it all down. I'm trying not to do that. I have more wavy, but uhh..willful relatively thick hair. when I work the product in, I'm just trying to control the poof some. I try to use as little as possible, and let some of the natural waves remain. I am washing only twice a week, and air drying. If my bed head is too bad, I have a mister with just water, to get it under control, and only use the hold product if the misting isn't working enough on its own. I am planning a run to Whole Foods/Trader Joes in St Louis tomorrow. Need to find a better selection of natural poo and conditioner. In the old days I used to use Nature's Gate Tea tree shampoo and conditioner, and ate flax seeds. I think my hair was in pretty good condition at the time, but worry that as the greys come in the texture might have gotten worse....still too early to tell on that, but hoping the straight virgin coconut oil that I use lightly after a wash will help. Still trying to catch up on the threads....lot of posts since the mid 2000s when i used to visit here.

few more posts and I will hopefully get some current shots as well as my 'classic' look shots posted
....lol
