I didn't use them during the awkward stage, but I used them for a while to secure a braided cinnabun until I started using a stick for it instead. No issues here.

How do you guys feel about using bobby pins, at least during the awkward stage? I have been considering it a bit lately and wondered if any of you had and your thoughts. Thanks

I dont belong in this thread at all but I saw this post and just had to write a sentence or two; there are bobby pins that are only half as long as the regular type so keep an eye open whenever you pass a store that sells hair related things. It seems you are a bit hesitating about the whole bobby pin idea but if you find these, you can easily hide the little pin behind a lock of hair and still get the hair off your face. Im sure you can do that with the regular sized ones as well, but these little pins are a bit more discreet if thats what youre looking for.

Thank you all for your support and compliments. Nobody really understand how that makes a person feel. =D

Not to pop your butch bubble, but 5-2 me has worn chain maile full shirt.
And, I knitted part of it. (And spun the rings, to boot. Yeah, I worked faires.)

I wore them at work during my awkward stage. Was a bit apprehensive at first, but soon found out that no-one cared. :)
Sounds good. Don't know how I missed your previous post. Guess I just have to be brave.

Thanks I will look for those. I need to get an elastic headband for exercising so I will make sure and get the smallest ones at the store and give them a try. I am sure with some effort I can make them work.

For those that deal with grief for having or growing long hair, I'm curious as to where you live, your occupation, and what kind of general lifestyle you enjoy, and how it relates to your comfort level. I'm asking, so I'll go first.

I live in a rural small town in the upper Midwest. Pop. about 125. I work in a machine shop, and in general enjoy a redneck/country lifestyle. I raise livestock, enjoy gardening and farming, hunting, drive a diesel 4wd truck, and am a blue jeans and t-shirt, meat and potatoes type of guy. I do catch a lot of flak for my hair, (which is only 8 months growth from a buzz cut), and have both ears pierced.

How about everybody else?

Buncha hoopla! Men look alot better with long hair. When I saw the actors from Lord of the Rings in real life, my first thought was, "Wow, they looked alot better in long hair!"

Snuggles (my spouse) has a brother with hair that looks just like yours. Snuggles' hair is much finer and thinner, but this month he hit tailbone on his longer strands, but it looks shorter because of random curliness.

I like your name, both forms of it. Snuggles and I are avid name-meaning researchers.

Why thank you! :) technically it's just a shorter form of my full name, but I consider it as my name (been too lazy to change it officially). :P
What's the other form though?

Not so much with the grief...I guess I get a non-positive comment every year or so.

San Francisco, CA; transit supervisor/rail training instructor (former bus and rail operator); arty & outdoorsy geeky lifestyle. I choose to live where skill/competence/abilities are more valued than unthinking conformity. Comfort level: very high, both with the fact of my long hair and how I relate to my local cultures as a longhair.

In general, both here and far away, my hair is so far outside the norm (up OR down), and my age and demeanor do not present as a possible victim, that I really get very little negative feedback.

I am from the northeast and am a college student, so there's some slack there with the hair. I used to have long hair, from about 12 years old to 19 or so when i cut it for a change, so a lot of people met me with long hair in the first place which helps. I used to skateboard when I was younger and enjoy sports fair bit, especially soccer, which I play a lot. As far as comfort goes, I don't really worry about having long hair and what others think, probably because I got used to that having done it before. Some people don't like it, some do, most don't care or at least not enough to comment. I did get a uncomfortable wearing it differently than down or in a ponytail, and pretty much never did that before and that still seems to be the case, as trying something new like bobby pins has made me a bit nervous.

Damn lucky hehe, these were the rules for hair at my school:

HAIRCUTS:
(a) Not to be cut shorter than 'Blade 4' length.
(b) Not to change length abruptly; i.e. no undercuts, bumps or 'mops'
(c) Not to be cut so long that it can be pulled down below the eyebrows or touch the ears or collar
(d) To be neat and tidy at all times.
(e) No artificial colouring.

Didn't really care for long hair at the time anyway, so my only regret is that I didn't grow it out the moment I finished school. Could've been at terminal length already. Oh well...

Think of the bobby pins as a practical tool rather than a piece of jewelry. Should make you feel a little less nervous about it. :)

Yeah guess I got lucky, though a lot of schools here don't care too much about that. And as far as the bobby pins go they are real useful, and they are definitely not jewelry so i don't know why I get nervous. Oh well. I have been using them all the time at home the last couple of days and planning to this Monday for school. If I leave my hair down I have been getting pretty good at making it so you can't see them, though I prefer a ponytail with the front layers pinned back, but thats more obvious.

22 February 2014. 100cm or something like that.

In secondary school I didn't have any problems with teachers —*it was more my friends and classmates making the (often negative) comments. Predictably, they stopped when they finally realised that it didn't really bother me.

That's one lesson that took me a long time to learn, just don't let it bother you. Comments used to get me riled up, go back and forth a few times, and commence to fighting. Really didn't help a bit!

I do believe that comfort and especially confidence in our choices are good traits to have.

Here's a picture of my hair now. I snapped it real quick before taking off for class so its in a ponytail but it still shows the length ok, plus its how I've been wearing it to keep it out of my face as it was driving me nuts. The picture maked me glad I haven't trimmed too much off the back. I hate the mullet look the longer layers actually make my ponytail more than a coarse puff.

Yeah, I wore it all day yesterday. Prefer it loose when sleeping, but re-did it today for swimming. Felt nice and comfy in the pool, unlike a ponytail that tends to yank a bit. I'd always worn it loose as I hate how tight swim caps are, but it was getting a bit too long to be practical. Happy to be able to braid it now, and I think I'll do it more often instead of a ponytail. :)

Reception was fine, no weird looks or anything hehe.

Yeah, I haven't trimmed mine either, and probably won't until it's a bit longer. Just ponytail it (and now braid it yay!) to cover up the mullet look, and enjoy the extra length. :)

Glad its gone well, its cool you can actually do something with your hair. When mine gets some length to it I might have to give that a try and definitely a bun. It's cool to see guys try some stuff out. I'd definitely still want it long, but it looks fun to try stuff with it. Did it take long to get it down?

Thanks. I have been growing it in some fashion for about 16 months or so and while I can get a lot of it tied back now there are still a bunch of layers that aren't there yet and were driving me nuts without the pins. Love being able to wear a ponytail though, even if I have to use a handle full of pins, much more comfortable.

Yours looks long enough to try a short english braid on, even with the layers. Just use a tiny bit of coconut oil (or whatever oil you use) to make it easier to work with, as well as minimise the flyaways. Try and get the three segments reasonably equal, otherwise you end up with a lopsided braid and a longer tassel. And brush it first to get most of the tangles out. :)

I'm just coming up to two years now since my last haircut (buzz cut). I started ponytailing about 10 months in - just a short one, plus bobby pins to hold back the front layers. A bit of gel helped as well, but wasn't needed as it grew longer.

Did it take long to get it down?
Only takes a few seconds to take off the elastic and unravel it all. Then shake my head side to side to get it back to normal. :)

I admire both of your thickness. We have 2 guys at work both wear ponytails, and their thickness is about like a pencil. Your hair looks healthy and thick. That's my hope, is when I get enough hair to get in a ponytail, I want a big thick one, not stringy...

Haha. gave it a few tries and got a few laughs. Definitely a ways a way. the layers that don't make it to the hair tie had no chance and I have a bunch of layers that I can just barely get in the tie so they didn't stay put, but it was fun to give it a go.

How do you guys handle nape hairs? Do you shave/trim, or just let them be? I don't have a real distinct hairline in back, it kind of transitions into nape hairs all the way down to my shirt collar.

Like nape hairs, sideburns also do not have an abrupt transition. I trim my sideburns, but very carefully.

My hairline at the back has a very abrupt transition, at least when I'm wearing my hair up. My nape hairs look fairly thick and messy, so I prefer to shave them off altogether, or at least keep them short and sparse. There's no effect on my overall length, but it looks a whole lot neater when wearing a ponytail or braid. :)

To clarify:
Hairy men are lovely.
Non-hairy men are lovely.
My bald, overweight, middle-aged man is lovely.
Almost all men younger than 30 trigger "pat-on-the-head, give milk and cookies" nurturing though. --Sorry about that, fellows. I can't help it.-- Once they ripen up a little, I like them just fine though!

A few times when I've gotten a trim, the stylist wants to shave them, but I hate it when the stubble starts growing back in. Lately I've been telling them to just leave it. (So far) I haven't been tying back or pony tailing, so it's not really an issue with me.

Well, my daddy just dropped the bomb... he plans to buzz off his hair. It's been APL to waist for nearly 20 years, and he's just not up to caring for it any more. Of course I am saddened, but I know my dad is making this decision out of sound reasoning. After one of his bouts of depression, he just let it go until he ended up with a large dreaded ball of hair on his nape, so he's just going to get rid of it. I tried telling him about the Tangle Teezer, which I am sure would work out the mess, but he's "ready for a change." You can't really argue that with a man in his 50s. His girlfriend is none too pleased about the prospect of daddy's hair going bye-bye, but she isn't up to caring for it either. I guess this means no more braiding his hair for powwows.

There are quite a few LHC'ers in their 50s, so I don't think age is an obstacle. Maybe he can trim off enough to make it easier to untangle?

So, DH is growing out his hair and beard since he cut in December for a job interview at the big company where we live (Dow Chemical). He didn't get that job, but at his new job, he figures he's just grow his hair and wear his cap (he has a cap that he wears with the company logo; he works in building maitenance until someone says something.

He always tries to brag about how fast his hair grew back in the day, when he had long hair 15 years ago.

Now he's like, "Does hair grow slower as you get older?" Poor thing. Now reality is setting in. It takes lots of time.

This hair growing journey sure does require patience.... hehe Thanks, nice to get that first big milestone out of the way.

Flemeister, that before and after pic was huge for me. Now I started basically shaved, and it took 3 or 4 months to get to your 'before' pic, but wow! That is truly inspirational! Well done my friend.

Yay! :)

No trims in two years though, so that helped it along, compared to regular trims to remove layers/avoid the mullet look. Easy enough to hide the layers with a ponytail or braid (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=110732&page=53&p=2660825&viewfull=1#post2660825) for the time being, and I'll start evening it up once it's at MBL.

Especially liking the half-up! Relaxed and comfortable to wear when the elastic is left a bit loose. :)

Feeling eager to try more new styles now. Gotta do a french braid one day, and time to get a Flexi-8 (or similar)!

flemeister and tommyboy - You both have awesome hair, I really like the halfups, but a regular braid is just as great :D

Also, flemeister, usually, wavy hair looks stunning with layers, looks quite a bit like a V-shaped hemline(which I adore btw but I think my hair is too straight for it haha) :3

Well, there ya go. I suppose it will take courage to wear it out, depending on your locale... I like it, and wish that hair styles for men had the same acceptance as women's, but atleast around here, not so much. "that one looks different... kill it!!" I love the Midwest, but the intolerance.... meh.

My son and I were chatting about this, the other day. Things that even from a knee-jerk perspective, looked "masculine". We were thinking that it started with choice of hair toys, as in: swords, light sabers, etc. We also thought that maybe a partial bun, with the lower part of the hair down, looked pretty good (though does little, to cool your neck). And ultimately: beards help.

But overall, we think the man-bun revolution, may be a slow one...

I actually find no difference in reaction between a ponytail and a ponytail bun or whatever you call it when you don't pull the ponytail all the way through. It's basically the same thing I guess to people though it is a nice break for my neck to get the hair off. Maybe if it were something more elaborate or a real bun which I don't have the length for.

A little bit I guess, mainly because I wasn't used to it. It makes for a neat and slick look though, and an easy way to get through the awkward stage. Use gel/pomade/mousse and/or bobby pins (both preferably) for the hair that isn't quite long enough to reach the elastic. :)

The Self Conscious thing came and went for me during the transition from loose and moving to "under control". The first few times I try anything new there is a short period of wondering what it looks like and wondering what others think. I had few hours of being self conscious when I decided to go back to "loose and moving". Now I wear my hair under control about 75% of the time and loose 25%.

Hey guys, I was wondering if I could ask you guys for some advice. My brother has recentally been thinking of growing his hair, now that I've been at it for awhile. He is a year younger than me, age 19. He does have some reservations about it, though I dont know why, seeing as our father has had shoulder lenght hair before:p He is also looking for a job at the moment since he got his guard card, and thinks he cant have long hair and be a guard. I'm not trying to presuade him one way or the other, but show him its a possible choice. Any idea's?

Good to know someone else felt the same way, at least to a degree. I final sucked it up and bought some hair ties, so I'll see how it goes some time soon I guess. Long hair grows slow, but a ponytail is a drastic change, throws me off I suppose.

Yes i was super self conscious when i began wearing buns in high school. I was using my mothers scrunchies too because I didn't know how to use a hairstick and I didn't know spin pins existed back then. It took me a while to get comfortable wearing a bun with a stick to school! :)

Simple braid with the aid of coconut oil. Tassel a bit long for my liking. Hard to braid further down with a very uneven hemline, as it hasn't been trimmed in two and a half years now. Anyway, must try harder next time! :D

Will try and get a decent length shot and a better braid photo soon. :)

Wow, I return here after 4-5 months and new guys are here, great pics everyone, keep growing!

Here's a recent picture of me, my wavy/curly stuff is not behaving well recently, lots of frizz and roughness. I sometimes wish I have "easier" hair that is just straight, easy to comb (not to make a huge mess if I want to daily rewet and recomb curly hair), etc...

Heh, photography 101, have a good source of light... Ahh whatever, was a midnight attempt... :o

Doesn't look as thick now that the coconut oil has worn off a bit. Went from 5 "bumps" to 6~7, and a shorter tassel. Job done. Must try again with dry hair, and preferably outdoors during the daytime lol... :)

Im curious to know why you guys grew it out, for females its not that rare, but i rarelt see long-haired men (besides at concerts). So what are your reasons for growing? I just like it and it is considered normal in the "dress code" for a metal fan.

Well, besides metal (which is one of the many genre of music that I listen to), I consider long hair to be the natural norm of the human being, who invented the short hair norm for men anyway? Long hair is a return to nature and to nature we shall return.

It just feels right to me. :)

One day I decided to refuse getting anymore haircuts. Each haircut leading up to that day had me feeling a bit neutered. Wanted to grow it out for years, but couldn't due to school dress code and wanting to look "normal"/presentable for work (awkward stage yay). That first photo was taken just after my last haircut, and haven't trimmed or cut since then (been two and a half years now).

Hi all and some wonderful manes here!

I recently celebrated 50 years of trying to be a longhair and a few months before that 20 years since my last trim. Very much enjoying the continuing journey. I agree with flemeister - I was 39 when I decided that I would never trim or cut my hair again; now I'm 4 months away from my 60th birthday. Lots of difficulties along the way, but it's great to have an give mutual support.

Happy growing!

New guy who is slowly approaching the end of the awkward stage here. I recently came to the realization that I am probably going to have my hair in a ponytail most of the time once it is long enough between work and exercise and other physically active type activities. It was a bit of a downer since I originally had been hoping to wear it loose though clearly hadn't really thought this through. Anyway, I was wondering if any of you experienced a similar circumstance where you wear your hair differently than how you originally planned to most of the time? I suppose I shouldn't be too rash and wait and see but I was a bit bummed when it finally clicked that I was gonna end up wearing it back all the time.

I had long hair a few years ago when I was in a band, sadly I cut it all off for work and I've missed it every day since. However my career is now at a point where I'm not planning to move up for a good few years so I'm growing it again :happydance:

As far as I'm concerned, polite oogling is fine...whether it is appropriate is between you and yours.

In general, men are more tolerant of oogling and catcalling simply because the risk of harassment, abuse, and physical harm is far less. However, offensive behavior isn't welcomed.

I think I'll subscribe to this thread from now on. :) You know what's funny? When I was really young, I always thought of long haired men as the norm because my dad's hair was about hip length when I was younger and all his friends were either bald or really longhaired. Actually, I really wish it was more common than it is.

Hi everybody. For some reason, I haven't posted on this thread. Perhaps because I can't compete with most of the fantastic manes here. But having not trimmed for 20 years and having tried to be a longhair for 50 years (see posts elsewhere), and now approaching my 60th birthday, I now have the longest hair I have ever had and at last feel that I have succeeded in something.

Today, I was buying a loaf of bread and the girl who served me commented that my hair was very long. I told her I hadn't cut or trimmed for 20 years, to which she offered the comment that I could now make a worthwhile plait (braid), so I plan to try that soon. A pleasing milestone for an oldie!

We all start from the bottomless pit of equality, It takes knowledge, power, and dedication to rise above and stand proud amongst those who choose not to be the same as everyone else.

As straight hair gal I feel offended.... nahh just kidding .... but yeah I often get those feelings on the 3er day post wash even my hair is now feeling a lot thicker and more bouncy since started with regular trims and all the new routine.

On the other hand, when I have braid waves or bun waves I feel so weird with so big hair that chills me a bit, but after 15 minutes its back to its silky flat original state. :silly:

But yeah nice photos and hair u get to see the lenght very well!!!!!

Might as well post a minor update pic. Brushed and ready to put up. Another few months till waist length. Will probably get there in April which will mark three years since I started growing. Not even a minor trim since then, heh. :)

Top knot and its so cliche and hard for me put it in this I hardly ever wear it but oh well

Days when I dont want to deal with my hair, I french tuck braid it, bandanas and Im good to go!

I keep cuttin back to arm pit everymonth because Im experimenting to gain the thickest hair I can get for next 2 years... this was 6 months ago so my hair is now a total diferent thing but yeah.....

These kind of comments won't make you any friends around here. Especially as a new member. Think before you post. Jokes don't come through the forum very well. Especially this kind of joke. It's rather threatening and a lot of people wouldn't like it at all.

You don't need to lurk in the background unless you want to do that. Just try not to threaten people. There are many here with a bit of twisted humor, myself included, but some threads are better suited to that sort of thing. This one really isn't.

Im curious to know why you guys grew it out, for females its not that rare, but i rarely see long-haired men (besides at concerts). So what are your reasons for growing? I just like it and it is considered normal in the "dress code" for a metal fan.

I had a friend that started growing his out a little while back and it looked good. Mostly though I just wanted to try something different. I had had the same short haircut forever and long hair looked like it might be fun. It makes things much more interesting now that I can change up my look just by doing something different with my hair even if it is only SL.

Yeah that is what flash and some effects camars have that make either better or worse certain aspects of hair . My hair looks almost blue black in photos when its more close to a very dark brown if u ask me.

Hi all, figured id chime in with something, putting together a hair chronology at some point; ive got pics all the way back to a flattop but thats another story.

> Indoors with ambient sunlight. Closer to what you'd see if we met in person but my hair changes colors depending on the light and season. Its not as coppery as my camera seems to like it here though.

> Same location few hours earlier in direct sunlight. I was blonde as a kid and it darkened considerably over the years, to idk what you'd call the color. Like here i have a lot of gold tones that pop up, especially in the summer months. but my hairs been known to reflect weird shades as well.

Mmm, not necessarily a bad look. If you've got moderately masculine facial features, there would be little to doubt anyway, other than the odd "should've gone to specsavers" moments. :) I wear my hair up for work in a lazy wrap bun, using a flexi-8, so in my mind the beard balances out the perceived femininity of the hair toy (in other peoples minds, I don't mind one little bit). *shrugs*

I mainly like the beard as an accent to long hair. They just go together well IMO.

If I may say so you do not look like a girl in any of your photos, T.O. In my opinion, both your long hair and your current very non - ugly hair and indeed, all those photos show a most attractive person. The short answer is probably most of the girls I dated before marriage….

Now, your hair is SO long, romantic and beautiful it makes the girls with short hair jealous and a serious tease for married ex-rogues like me. Quite naughty of you to grow it all long like that… If you realized this before and did it anyway, I would say in this sense you qualify as a bad girl. ;)

When you think about it if one is truly in love, then why would he/she push the object of affection to change something major about themselves they really treasure?…..it's not like asking to put the toilet lid down ;)

Dark side, I like that ;)

Wise words! I was too young then with too little self-esteem. Today I say: take it or leave it :D

Thanks. Hey, at least age has a couple advantages over youth :D I'm now wise enough to know how much I still don't know and confident enough that the most important opinion about me is my own…. Other than I just wake up everyday and say "Thank you Odin, I'm still here!" LOL If I think of anymore, I'll let you know…. :D
