View Full Version : My Madora/George Michael Salon Experience - pic heavy

So as some of you know, I had an appointment this past Thursday the 17th at the Madora/George Michael Salon in NYC. :D My appt was with Agnes and was for a shampoo, deep treatment, & trim (my first in 2 years!)

When I got there I had to hang up my coat and put on a smock. Then head over to the wash area. Clarabell is the shampoo woman and was amazing! She shampooed my hair twice (once to remove any oils and whatever and the second to make sure it's clean) in their special sink designed for long hair. She massaged and cleaned my scalp better than I am able to do all while shampooing. She then applied the deep treatment and combed through my hair (not quite as carefully as I do, but way better than any other salon I've ever been to) and carefully laid my hair on top of my head. Placed a plastic type cap over my head and brought me to the regular area. There a heat cap was placed on my head to work the DT and a timer was set for 1 hour. I was brought tea and a pamphlet describing George Michael's theories and products. Agnes also came over and chatted for a bit.

After the hour it was back to the sink to wash out the DT with more massaging and another conditioner (I think) and another combing. Then back to the chair. My hair was carefully wrapped in around 11 rollers, 5 humongous ones & 6 large. A silky cap was put on top of the rollers & then an old fashioned hood dryer (again designed special for the salon) was placed over everything. A timer was again set for an hour. Once the hour was up Clara came over & threw it on for another 15 minutes saying there was no way my hair could be dry. LOL Lucky for me (I was a little bored at this point) Agnes came over after 10 and shut it off. My hair was unwrapped and carefully combed out. Then I was asked to stand for the trim (they always trim dry here.) Agnes took about 20-25 minutes to do the trim. She was very careful and did a wonderful job! She called a few people over to look at my hair. They are a long hair salon, but I guess there aren't really many long hairs around any more. ;) She then asked if I had anything to secure my hair & told me if not to just put my hair under my coat. I told her I have a hair stick. I'd walked in with my hair in a braided nautilus bun. So I just put it back up in a natilus bun. Clara & Agnes watched while I did it and were amazed at how quickly it was done & how nice it looked. I was surprised at that, but it was nice too. I also wanted a comb since both of mine have seams. Agnes directed me to the one she advised and it's working out well so far. I was advised to not wash my hair for 3 days (because of the DT) and not trim for 6 months. That was great to hear since that is what I was planning on. :D I was there for 3 hours or so and not once did they try to push products on me!

I ended up losing only 3", not too bad after no trims for 2 years. My hemline is more even, which I love. My braid taper is no where near as bad and my tassel is much thicker. My hair is so silky, shiny, & smells so good! I would recommend the salon to anyone! Request Agnes if you can. I would recommend bringing some reading material if you are doing the DT because 2 hours under hoods does get a little tedious. Overall it was a great experience and oh so worth it! It was my Christmas present from DH and after I told him I'd love to have this as my Christmas present every year!

I am sad to no longer be at classic length and already miss the length. I know that is silly though and that it will be back in about six months and in better condition. ;)

Now for the pictures:

How come your hair is more curlier or wavier in the before picture but it's very straight in the after picture? How did they do that?

That's the effect of the hair being dried on the jumbo rollers.

OP, I'm glad you got to experience the whole GM thing - it's quite something special, isn't it! I'm sad that I'll never go there again now I've waved goodbye to long hair.

Me too! It's what made me go and also what made me post the thread. :) Thank you! Me too.

How come your hair is more curlier or wavier in the before picture but it's very straight in the after picture? How did they do that?
The wavier picture is my natural hair type. To cut it easier they straighten it by using the huge rollers. Since the roller is so big it mostly straightens the hair. Just the ends get a bit wavy.

Your hair looks amazing!

Thank you for sharing your experience :)
Thank you!

I did! Thank you!

Beautiful hair and a great salon experience! Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you. She evened up the hemline a bit so the taper isn't as bad. Finally most of my unwanted layers are gone!

Yes it is! Most of the women in there had shorter hair so you could still go if you really wanted. ;)

Really? I had no idea that could happen.
Me neither until I read about it in someone else's thread about the GM salon. :)

With my hair straightened you can really see the demi-permanent black dye from 2009 that never came out. I'm glad it's moving down though! All my hair from the black and below has at least 3 demi dyes on it and one set of highlights. All the hair above is virgin. :D

Forgot to say that with my hair straight and silky I really feel for you 1's with silky hair! It's been so hard to braid and the braids get messy so much quicker!

Thank you! I really did though. I hadn't had a trim in 2 years and my ends were too tangly for my liking. Plus the ends kept splitting and there were only a few at the longest length. My ends are much healthier now and I love the more even hemline. ;)

No gloss, just whatever is in the deep treatment. I don't know. They do have products that you can order online or get at the salon. My hair is wavy though so it doesn't normally shine. Once I wash it the shine will disappear because my wurls will be back. ;)

It's beautiful.
Thank you!

You are all being so nice and your comments make me smile! Thank you all!

The price was higher than the couple of salons I've gone to in my life. I think it's cheaper than quite a few though and probably about right for a salon in the city. Not sure though. I called Monday for the appoinment & got it for Thursday so not long at all.

Thank you! I can see that being a bit of a problem. That is one of the upsides of living in NJ (being an hour train ride from the city.) Has lot of downsides too, though I suppose it's the same anywhere. ;)

It was! Thank you! I hope so, probably August or so (my hair only grows about 5 inches a year so a little slower than normal.)

I went to a GM salon in 2010 and had 16 rollers and was under the dryer 3 hours. The whole process took 8 hours! My hair turned out good. I wish I could go back soon!

The process took longer than expected but the results were good. I got a 3" trim too. I had not been in a salon since the mid 80s! So it was my first visit in many years.I really needed the 1hr deep treatment before I grew my hair longer. Too bad it was so far away for me or I would go back soon. I went to Rapunzels in Ohio.
I had to convince them to cut 3"...lol. My hair was 5ft and the trim brought me back to 57".
The whole process was interesting.I never imagined anyone could handle long hair so carefully.

Growing up my mom always cut my hair. Then my sister did. The first time I was in a salon was only a few years ago. Before this I went to 3 others. The first & third cut unwanted layers. The first also cut the whole thing too short for my liking. Coming from home cuts it was such a shock! I was so happy finding this site & Feye's trim method.

Then reading about Madora's I wanted to go there. I knew they would cut how much I really needed (I would cut too little) without cutting more like other salons. I did basically know what to expect going into it from reading people's experiences here. Just hadn't paid attention to the fact that my hair was longer/thicker, or whatever, and would keep me under the dryer so long.

It took me about 2 hours to get there between the train ride & walking to and from train stations. Was so worth it though and I will go again if I can. Just glad I can start with a good hemline & fresh ends now. As long as I keep up with it I hope to be good. I just have to remember that health is more important than length. ;)

They didn't comb my hair quite as carefully as I do. I cringed a few times. Lol Overall I was more than pleased.

Five feet worth of hair! Wow! I know your hair is extremely long. Just never thought of it like that before. Your hair is gorgeous regardless of length. That just adds the extra element. Makes in unbelievable in a very good way! :D :thud:

I plan on going to the LA version of this salons soon. What are their prices? I went online and none of their prices are listed. I don't need an exact, but something like 200-300 will be fine. I don't want to be shocked when I go to leave. Your results were great!
