A year and a half ago, I got stupid and bleached my blondette hair. A month later, it looked brassy and I hated it, and dyed over it with the closest I could get to my natural color. I've done honey treatments on the roots to bring out the highlights, and it's grown out quite a bit. But now the dye line is at a really awkward place. It's right at the base of my head, so my head is darker and then the rest of my hair is light. Next week I'm going in to have the bottom dyed. I really don't mind the ombre effect, and would be ok with the ends being lighter if I could break up the line and bring my natural color into the ends, so I'm thinking the best thing is to get low-lights put into the bottom. I want to mess with the new, virgin hair as little as possible, just make it look nicer growing out. Has anyone else had this done? Reverse highlights?
The thing is, I have fine hair that I've already nursed back from my bleach disaster and I'm worried about messing it up more. It's finally healthy. I'm going to a salon to have this done. What should I ask for? What should I avoid? What is the best post-dye treatment? I'm hoping that because I won't be bleaching it, maybe it will be less damaging.
Any advice would be welcome. Thanks!

I would do a protein treatment before you go in. I highly highly recommend ApHogee 2 Step. Part of the reason you want to this before you dye is because it can sometimes fade color although I've never had this happen to me (dark brown dye, 20 volume developer on white and dark brown hair). Afterwards I would try a lighter protein treatment if you're worried about fading: Joico K Pak or the GVP version at Sally's.

I've had people mention coconut oil helps a lot.

I've found with all dyes that putting coconut oil on before dying helps a lot. I hope it works out for you!

I don't colour my hair, but my student daughter whose hair changes colour practically every week, swears by the best quality conditioner she can possibly afford to stop the condition of her hair resembling something like a bundle of straw.

I can have them dye over the coconut oil and it'll help keep it from getting too dry? I use coconut oil in my hair all the time. Thanks.
My hair doesn't seem to like protein very much. It makes it crunchy.

Seconding the dying over coconut oil. Coconut oil prevents protein leaving the hair shaft so minimises damage, theres a huge thread on this somewhere amongst the realms of posts we have here!

Thanks to all of you for your advice! I had my hair dyed today and it looks so much better! I put coconut oil in before and again when I got back. My hair does feel a little dryer, but the color is as close to my natural color as possible, the ends are about 1 shade lighter, so I have a very subtle ombre going on, and the dye line is much more blended. Now I can concentrate on keeping it healthy, and letting my natural color grow in and not dying it again!
