View Full Version : Aveda -- is it really worth the money?

Do any of you feel that Aveda haircare products are worth the money? If so, are there any particular Aveda products that you just can't live without? I am pretty happy with the Burt's Bees More Moisture that I am currently using, but I like to rotate things now and then, and I LOVE the way a lot of Aveda products smell. When I see the high price tag, I do cringe, but should I take the plunge and try Aveda anyway?

Their color conditioners are really good if you're looking to adjust or enhance the tone of your hair slightly.

I am thinking about getting the invati shampoo. I've heard so so reviews on it (some good, some bad). So IDK! I've never tried any aveda products before, but have been looking into them as well.

Howling Wolf - I have the full size set, used once but nothing beats my indian herbs so they will be going up for sale.

Mommy had it and liked it but she didn't get it again so I am going to say no.

My mom loves aveda products. She's always used whatever was on sale, etc, and counted it as a huge splurge when she spent 10$ on conditioner. But now she's a convert. Uses the invati shampoo and conditioner and a few styling products.

It's worth it for her. For me -- at least using the same products -- it wasn't. Didn't work for my hair type (but oh the smells!!). So I guess it depends, like always, on how well it works with your hair.

I LOVE Aveda products. I went to an Aveda beauty school and worked in an Aveda salon for a little bit, and it was heaven because I could get everything wholesale (TBH, the only way I can afford it). In my experience, the products work well, and I found a couple lines that my hair seemed to really like (Smooth Infusion, Dry Remedy, and Brilliant). I'm broke at the moment, but I buy it whenever I can afford it.

It's been years since I've been to Aveda for a cut but I remember the brilliant shampoo smells wonderful. I can't remember how well it worked but it smelled so good!

I've used the Dry Remedy shampoo/conditioner and the Be Curly cream.
I liked it, but stopped using it when i figured out that the Tresemme Naturals line in combination with coconut oil is doing the same thing
for less $$$. I'd rather invest the savings in pretty hair toys. :-)

I used the Shampure line for two straight years about 5 years ago before I decided to go cone-free, but my hair was lovely those two years.

Aveda now compared to Aveda 20 years ago is crap.

In a word, YES, I think they are for me. I've gone to an Aveda salon for color and trims for about 5 years. The products smell heavenly and they work very well. I love the Blue Malva and the Damage Remedy. I've tried a lot of their other products too and liked most of them. You can purchase travel sizes in quite a few of their products. That's a great way to try without buying big bottles.

I love Aveda products buy seldom buy them due to price. I went to Aveda salons exclusively for years and loved it. Then I had a child and stopped having both the time and the money to spend all on me... If only I had a career that paid more! Ah well. I buy it from time to time and love it. I usually use the Shampure line but I also really like their Sap Root stuff. Everything smells so good too!

Ahh now Idk if I want to order them! lol The closest place that sells aveda products near me is 3 hours away so I'd have to order it online I think. I've never tried them before either. But I REALLY want to try the invati just to see if it works for me, but I don't want to spend the money lol (I'd be willing to spend the money if it was a miracle product that everyone loved, but so far I've gotten mixed reviews).

I really like Aveda, especially the Damage Remedy line. I use the Damage Remedy shampoo and resconstructive deep treatment a few times a month. They make my highlighted hair very soft and shiny.

I also like a few of their styling products, mainly the Phomollient mousse and a spray root lifter (can't remember the name of it right now). I use them when I blow dry my hair.

We associate price with quality. We want what we can't have! even before we can afford to buy a product, subconsiously we have already made up our minds that teh product must be good because it is expensive. It is a marketing technique used by companies to make us believe that the product is good. Most of the times these claims are overrated.
its called price positioning.

I loved the madder root shampoo and conditioner when I used cones. Never really been a fan of anything but their coloured hair line though.

Does *anyone* actually still believe that? 'Cause, I don't think so. ;)

I've tried their line, including the daily spritzer.. I didn't see a big difference it their product line compared to anything else I've tried.. but that could be just me

Yes, they do. I don't, and you seem not to, but there are price snobs out there. I work with several who would look down their noses at me if they knew what I use (or don't use) in my hair.

I love the scents of Aveda products but I don't think they're any better than what can be had much cheaper. I have looked for what essential oils I might can try blending to get close to the scents, and here is one suggestion I found:

http://www.skincaretalk.com/t/16964/inspiration-for-some-eo-recipes
"I love the scent of Shampure from Aveda. It's a combo of Bergamot, Coriander, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Patchouli, Peppermint, Petitgrain, Rosemary and Ylang Ylang oils, but I can't duplicate the scent at home."

I doubt any of us could nail the scent exactly, but I can mix EOs and get something close enough to scratch that itch for me. At some point I will probably try some of the EO blends sold for hair growth specifically, such as Chrome Dome. The only reason I haven't bought it is I have plenty of single EOs to mix my own. I've referenced a thread on here about essential oils for hair growth, and some blend ideas discussed in it smell fantastic.

An upscale hotel me I was in with hubby recently had Aveda in our room. I loved the conditioner (I forget which one) enough to google the price but when I found I couldn't get a bottle for less than $30--well, I didn't love it quite that much.
Depends on your finances and where you want to put them, I guess.
I just bought a ficcare superclip on ebay--many who would buy Aveda probably wouldn't do that and would think it was overpriced for a 'hair clip'.
Also, for the amount I paid for the superclip, I could have got two or three bottles of Aveda and used them for probably ten years at the rate I would use it to cowash my scalp with.
I won't buy Wen either.

I just finished my aveda curl cream--I did not love it or hate it but will not re purchase as I moved on to just plain leave in conditioner with no curl enhancement creams. And if I were to buy ome of those it will from kinky curly or jessicurl line.

I personally love their Brilliant Universal Styling Creme as a leave-in, it's my HG product. However, that's the only Aveda thing I'll spend the money on, simply because I keep coming back to it.

Is this the Pure-fume Brilliant creme? I am being extremely stingy with what little I have left because I thought they stopped making that. That product is the biggest reason I fell in love with Aveda's scents and went on the hunt for alternative ideas.

I love the Dry Remedy Moisture Masque! My (Aveda) hairstylist recommended using it as an overnight treatment and it worked wonders for my dry hair.

i was in love with their damage remedy treatment but almost 80,- euros for the big size are indeed quiet expensive, there sure is much cheaper stuff that comes close to it. I would buy it again to treat myself to something nice, but not frequently.

I thought Damage Remedy and Invati were very good quality products, but I would price them at $20, not $120 that you have to pay for a big bottle over here.
Not worth it for my hair that doesn't really need intense conditioning but uses up product very fast.

A good alternative i found to the damage remedy is Goldwell Kerasilk Ultrarich Treatment. The large size costs about the same, maybe a bit less but is like twice the amount of product. The problem with the damage remedy was that it did condition well but didn't provide significant slip, so i was running out of it from applying to much rather fast too. :(

I found their camomile shampoo too drying to use more than once or twice although I love the scent of their products.

^ yes to this, I've purchased the Madder Root conditioner before and really liked it. It was $20, I believe. They only sell huge bottles of the shampoo so I didn't want to risk all of that $ on something I might not like, but the conditioner was lovely. Subtle color, hair not weighed down. Very nice :-)
