So please post your pics of your Christmas or New Year hairdo's, I for one looooooooove to see them :p
And to start this thread of : here is a recreation of mine. On the day itself I made to simple accent braids to put in front of the pearls around the sockbun, but I didn't feel like that today :)

dwell_in_safety, wow! It looks like it starts out as a triple French braid, but the bun itself looks different. Gorgeous, anyhow!
I did a simple Dutch braid and then bunned it:

Well, I've already posted a thread about it, but I did a Hawser braid for Dicken's faire (which is theoretically Victorian Christmas):
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v317/young_artist/Hair/DSCN5101sm_zps1284e99e.jpg
But for actual Christmas, I just did a ponytail:

I don't yet know what I'll do for New Years. Suggestions, anyone?

Quixii : I second the half up to show of your hair !
I'm considering a half up myself, but I'm a bit afraid of tangles and am actually considering a coney leave in/serum kind of thing, something I haven't used in .... I think 10 years !

Love the other hair posted! Encourages me to keep growing mine (as if that is needed! :-P ). :)
I did do a triple French braid, braided the ends together, and bunned them with spin pins. Took about ten minutes. I used to barely be able to manage an English braid; then I found this site. lol

These pictures are putting me to shame. All I wore was my regular cinnabun. In my defence I've been practicing the seashell bun (http://forums.longhaircommunity.com/showthread.php?t=65935) these last few days. I think I might have a bit too much hair to really succeed. If only I'd discovered it (and the LHC) earlier.

Wow, dwell_in_safety -- just wow. And gossamer, how do you do that? I thought the vortex bun was done cinammon style, but with multiple strands wrapped around each other -- how do you get that "flower" pattern? Are they rope braids? *terribly unskilled at analysing updos*
:p I spent the morning of Christmas Eve in my bathroom struggling to do a headband braid, waterfall style, but yeah, didn't work. So I just ended up doing a small waterfall on the side, with a single curl falling through each time. A single, smooshed curl from so much manipulation. :D

Agreed - wow, Gossamer! I'm also wondering how you did it. I assume rope braids, but how many sections? How did you hold it? Very pretty. :)

Thanks! I put my hair up into a high pony and did two rope braids from that base. Then I began wrapping them counterclockwise and pinning as I went - one started at about 12 o'clock and the other at 6 o'clock. I think I used about 25 hairpins? When I reached the hair ties at the base of the braids, I pulled them off, twisted each end into a single twist (combining the two in the braid) and tucked it out of sight into the bun.

Ah, I guess that's the wonder of long, thick hair! I did a bun by the same description a couple weeks ago, and it wasn't nearly so pretty:

I did this for a Christmas party - sorry it looks really messy, but it actually looked nicer without a camera with a macro lens :P

It's basically just one long braid over one shoulder, then wrapped up and around the back crown of my head into a wreath with a few pins to hold it in and the angel brooch. It also has a bright pink hair chalk streak in it for fun :)

@arc691 : I had seen your blog and your christmas style ;) I loved it by the way :)
@candlesandfish : isn't it strange how camera's do that ?! I love your christmas angel brooch.
I wish I could do all this updo's, but my hair is still rather short (but I'm almost at hip I think) and I'm not patient enough to learn all the updo's. Oh and not creative enough to adapt them to my features, I need things on top of my head or things that don't make my face look to round : if I bring all my hair to the back I look like a full moon LOL
Still pondering what to do for New Years :)

Kyaatje - try milkmaid braids maybe? Braid your hair into two braids, then bring them up to the front of your head, cross them over, then take them back down again and pin. It looks much more impressive than it is (add a few more pins along the front of your head if you need them). When my hair wasn't quite long enough to go back down the other side i crossed them at the nape of my next instead, and tucked them under one another when i ran out of braid, and pinned there. It'll crown your head and be interesting - if you want to jazz it up with glittery things or colours, buy some thin ribbons in your outfit colour (i love midnight blue and silver for new year's, personally) and add them to the hair before you braid, one colour to each strand of your braid. fun! :)

Thanks for the suggestion candlesandfish. Unfortunately I think that that style makes me look old (I tried it yesterday and before I gave my opinion my husband said that it makes me look old aswell ! )
I'm playing with the idea of doing a half up and make sockbun curls before, just never did half ups before :-)

Thank you! My hair is about hip length - but I'm only 5'2, so that doesn't mean too much, heh. I haven't really thought about it, but I don't think I can make more than two turns with the braid! Possibly three, but definitely not more than that.

Hmm, maybe your hair is thicker? Mine is in the lower end of average - the braid looks like this (http://i1119.photobucket.com/albums/k626/growingmyhair/IMG_4501_zps07a9bb36.jpg) before I put it up. I'll have to note how many turns I do next time I do that style! *g*
Kyaatje
December 30th, 2012, 10:32 AM
I don't think it is the thickness (my braid looks something like yours I think)
It is a combination of clumsiness and maybe taper ? My hair has had no official cut in about 4 years now, but I did shave in an undercut and it grow out of a pixie so it is 'naturally' layered.
Oh well in time I might learn ;-)

well I had planned a half up with a mini beehive (but without teasing) pancake braids going as kind of a half headband behind my head and loose sockbun curls but my hair decided that the curls where more then enough and didn't want to play :p
So I now have curls with a simple clip so the front part doesn't fall into my face

Seriously. What magical skills or powers must I possess to be able to do such intricate and beautiful updos?
I might try to get a picture up, our Christmas Eve dinner is coming up on Sunday and since I need to wash my hair that day as well I'll try doing some sort of hair-do.
(I'm going to be dip-dying my hair with markers though later that night haha)
