View Full Version : Feeling Bleh about my Hair

Ever since I have found LHC, I have stopped heat styling my hair, except for my bangs, and I have been taking amazing care of my hair to the point where it is thicker and healthier. But lately, I have been in a slump. :shrug:I am still unhappy with my hair, even though it is a length that I don't mind. I want to heat style my hair and try new products. I do stand firm against ever teasing my hair though, it is painful to watch anyone do that to their hair.
I am not a big makeup person or someone who kills their hair everyday, but I long to feel... well... pretty.
Maybe you all can help! Maybe if there are some new things I could try with my hair, I might not be so down. My husband HATES buns, he says they are grandma-y and that it doesn't look good on me. I like braids and so does he. I have been wearing my hair in a diagonal dutch braid that ends as a side braid over my shoulder, but after wearing that for so long, I want something new!
Do you all have any suggestions? I know at some point, I might be bad and heat style or use hair spray again, but for now, I want cute ideas, especially since winter is here. I just want to be happy with my hair again! :nono: I am at APL , maybe a tad longer, but not much.

I think everyone goes into hair slumps once in a while. :flower:
For that matter, depending on your hair goal and texture and what you want out of your hair, there's no reason you should put the kibosh on ever heat-styling or doing other "bad" things to your hair. For me, it's a matter of balancing various "good" and "bad" things - I personally don't do a lot of supposed LHC "musts," but because I generally treat my hair very gently and sleep with a pillowcase and bonnet, my hair is still in good condition.
I'd suggest looking up hair tutorials on youtube for inspiration.
I tend to wear tons of braids, so here are some suggestions: lace braids, perimeter braids, accent braids, rope braids (which go into a really pretty bun). For more general elegant hairstyles, what about a french twist or a gibson tuck? They're both very classy and work well on APL+ length. :)

I did think a few months ago too. Toss it in a bun until you decide to love it again or chop it to what you love.
Someday some one will say something to you about your hair that will make it all seem worth wild.

Everyone has hair slumps for me experimenting with buns and a new toy or two does wonders :). How do you/he feel about half up buns? they are softer and younger looking especially if you do a braided mini bun. A rose braid in a figure 8 held with a flexi or ficcare type clip would be delicate and lovely. Besides doing half ups allows you to do styles you might not be long enough for yet. Maybe get some cute combs to stick in or a colorful stick?

Thank you all! I had never considered half up! And I actually don't have many hair toys yet. I had long hair when I was younger but my mother always had me wear it down. What kind of hair toys would be fun with my length?

I agree with those who suggest you try learning some new braids. Also, what about some heatless curling techniques? They can be a lot of fun. Even parting your hair differently can make a nice change. Alternatively, you could try some red lipstick or bold eyeliner - it only takes a minute, but sometimes it's really satisfying to try some new makeup. (That's what I do when I'm itching to cut...)

Flexi-8's would be awesome at your length some shorter sticks like around 4 - 5 inch. You can find ficcare knock offs too if you dont want to invest in the real deal yet. Hair scroo's/spin pins, pony wraps, hair spirals, decortive amish pins.... if i think on it i could come up with more ;)

I love rope braids. I'm not very in to buns right now for myself and my husband loves when I do these. They also look good with cute hats too.

Oooo! Thank you!!! I will look online for some! Another struggle I am faced with is that DH and I moved to a little town in October and it has no good beauty stores! There are a ton of local salons but I am not willing to deal with trying to find products from them. And then there is Walmart! Ugh! This Walmart has more than the average one, I have noticed, but not enough to fix my hair cravings! I have to get everything online! So any website would help too!:p

I just wanted to stop in to say that your hair is really pretty. :flower: Maybe you could try braiding a ribbon into your hair?

Thank you so much! I'm happy with the health of my hair, just kinda bored with it at the moment. Haha

Something I think is really pretty is when you part your hair in the middle at the top with all hair down and take the two front chunks on either side and back-push a comb in( or just clip each side up ) on the diagonal.. Like a half up but spit in two, depending on the sweep angle you can look dreamy (lower sweep) or dressy (higher up)... It's REALLY flattering and I get a ton of compliments when I wear my hair like that and it's variations.

Side ponytail or ponytail that you slump over your shoulder. Guys dig that.

I live in a small area too. We are lucky that we do have a sally's and a target but its not much in the hair department unle you want to buy a straightener :p. I rarely boy hairtoys in store most of my buying is online through esty and ebay. On esty i like hairsticksnmore since his are very pointy and go through my dense buns more easily there is also PM now eduard hair sticks i think i have two pairs of sticks from him. He has the bigger color selection and if you get them from his pick one listing the sticks are thinner and look better in half ups. He has been very accomadating of my custom requests and he pre-drills the tops for you to decorate them for free :). There are plenty of shops who do flowr clips and such but i dont wear them so i cant reccomend.
On ebay i buy from so man different people several from hong kong never has an issue. Most of what ive bought from there have been gold plated enamel combs. I like butterlies and fish :). Some good search terms on there are beak clip, ____ combs (insert animal or flower in the blank), and ficcare. On esty it helps to narrow th field like "purple heart wooden fork" or "acrylic hairstick 5" i find avoiding the word inch helps since some people abbrviate it.

Side fishtail is one that always garners me compliments! They think it's so intricate and tricky and with longer hair, it's kind of impressive to see.
Also try the braids just at the front of your hair like a headband, but on one side, a la Jennifer Aniston at the Oscars.

Ahhhh! i can help! (sorta) i know that once you stop doing all the bad damage, u still want that amazing her-hair-looks-great feeling. well, there are countless ways to do your hair heat/ damage free, and one way i always do my hair is at night i pull all my hair into a high pony, high enough to get my bangs in there, then i twist my length like a bun around and around in a circle, then bun it like that for the night. in the morning, after ive done my makeup, all i need to do is take the bun down, shake head a little, and instant waves/ volume that lasts all day! plus there are tons of overnight ways to get curls similiar to my my everyday look. dont give in!

Thank you all!!!
I think a big concern for me was also my bangs! I have a hard time doing updos because of them. On my other post, I needed opinions on whether it was worth it to keep my bangs or toss them! Most think that I should toss them, which might help a lot!

I'm sorry you're feeling blah. For what it's worth, your hair looks absolutely amazing in the pictures in your bangs post (both with and without the bangs).

I like braids a lot. They're easy, they stay in well on my hair, and they suit my face pretty well. Lace braids are easier to learn when your hair is shorter, and they're very handy for enlivening a lot of different hairstyles.
I find that a lots of different updos are based upon twin braids. You can pin them up in a crown shape, or make buns out of them in a bunch of different styles. Even if your partner doesn't like buns, a lot of times these kinds of styles won't register as "a bun" because they look rather different. They also tend to be good on rounder faces or widow's peak hairlines, since they give a more heart shaped look to your face. Since I often feel like I have no chin, I really like this.
