Any suggestions for a shampoo and/or conditioner that is similar to Trader Joe's Tea Tree Tingle, but cheaper? It's not all that expensive to begin with ($4 a bottle or so), but Other uses gobs of the conditioner and it adds up. His favorite aspect is the tingle, but he likes the minty smell, too.

I bought some Rosemary Mint Suave conditioner to try, but he misses the tingle. Apparently the smell is "adequate." If there's a soap or body wash similar to but cheaper than the TJ's TTT version he'd like that too. We got TJ's tea tree bar soap and he was disappointed.

Since it's for Other, his hair is iii/M/3b, and prone to dryness. :afro:

Nivea makes a menthol bodywash that my brother uses. Not sure how tingly it is as I have not used it myself, but worth a try?

My other suggestion would be Ombra Eucalyptus shower gel which I love and is very tingly, but you can only get that at smallflower.com

I would buy a cheapy condish and mix some menthol crystals into it they arent expensive when you use so little in something like that. You can also use peppermint oil/extract, tea tree oil, even rosemarry eo, avoid camphor oil though its too easy to od on that one.

What about getting a large, cheaper unscented condish and adding it 50/50 to the TJ's condish?

I guess I see it as cheap because I used Giovanni!

Thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately the Nivea looks like it's about the same price as the TJ's. I'll keep an eye out for coupons though, could be worth a shot.

Mixing is an idea, I hadn't thought of that. (And the TTT is cheap, it's just the amount he ends up using that drives the cost up. He uses about three times more conditioner than I do! Even worse, I got him started on the Tea Tree Tingle, I just didn't realize he'd use it up so fast.)

I've never come across menthol crystals, where would I be likely to find them? I'd thought of essential oils, but even if the bottle lasts for a long time they're a fairly significant initial investment. I'll double-check the prices when I'm out this afternoon.

add drops of peppermint oil and tea tree oil "rosemary too" to your favorite shampoo and you will have it

I'd add some peppermint oil to regular shampoo. $4 a bottle isn't THAT expensive to me, I don't know what to recommend that doesn't cost that much or more! (most things that have real peppermint enough to give you that "tingle" would probably be pretty expensive unless you mix it yourself! Which isn't that hard, just make sure there's room in the bottle for lots of shaking when you mix it!)

Ah I didn't realize you were looking for a body wash as cheap as the shampoo.

As for the menthol crystals, you can get them online but I wouldn't formulate with menthol (or peppermint or rosemary, or even tea tree) without a scale but that's me.

You can get menthol online at esty, ebay, even mountain rose herbs i think my local healthfood store carried them but at double the cost of online so id say thats your best bet. As far as eo peppermint is one of the cheapest available ive seen it on sale for $2 an ounce whic doesn sound like much but remember you only need drops of it an ounce will last you probably a year of regular use. Rosemarry isnt expensive and i got my tto for $8 for 4 ounces a few years ago and i havent even used half yet its still good. If you want to dabble just go to your cuppboard most people have peppermint extract for baking and as long as its real all it is is alcohol and peppermint oil and that little bit of alohol wont kill his hair just to test it out. Mix up a mini batch in a travel bottle to see if it gets the tingle he wants.

About the mentol you can find calculators online for making soap and pain relief balm to keep the amount safe.
