As December rolls around, we're in need of our next style of the month. This month we'll be looking at curls!

How do you prefer your curls? Are they tight and spiralled or spread out and voluminous? Do you add them to an updo or a ponytail? Do you wear them as their own style?

Here is a chance for all the naturally curlies and those who have curled their hair to show off. :D

Dang, this will be difficult for me as a 1b :( I shall try in earnest though to get my hair to do something resembling a curl!

I prefer my curls natural and down. The only time I do an updo is if my curls have gone dry and frizzy.

ArienEllariel, thank you so much. My hair is really quite gray, but for some reason it photographs blonder than it is.

Yey! Perfect time for me to experiment... I am actually trying something different today (didn't come out as planned, but hey, isn't this how we learn?)
I put a bit of gel and oil on my washed hair this morning and scrunched it, and even though is a bit on the frizzy side, I can say I can see a bit of curls forming... :rolling::magic::cheese:
Will continue experimenting and hopefully posting results here...
Cheers :)

Have you tried plopping in a t-shirt? I do it to make it dry faster and it makes my curls tighter. Another thing you can do is to scrunch the gel in your sopping-wet hair in the shower and then immediately wrap in a towel. I do this, and after 10 or 15 minutes I put it in the t-shirt. It helps the curls to start forming immediately after conditioning.

I actually just did curls the other day. Here are mine, done with a curling rod.

I tried headband curls. Not sure if I did something wrong so that the length didn't have a chance to curl or if my length just didn't want to cooperate. Here are the curly ends in a knotted pony tail.

Dear Spirals,
Yes; I have been drying my hair for the past 4 months with a t-shirt. The plopping technique is still difficult for me. I tried it 2 times, including this week, and it made my hair frizzier. This is how it looked this week:

http://i1260.photobucket.com/albums/ii576/arelrios/IMG_14821-1.jpg

I will now try the gel on sopping-wet hair.

Question: Is there any way to make the curls hold, without being hard/crunchy? Sorry is this is an obvious question/answer, but I'm super new on the curls subject ;)

Thanks for your suggestions...

Cheers,

arel

Oooh, I'll have to post something. I have a non-heat-using curling method I really like. :p And of course there's my natural pattern.

arelrios, I've only used gel three times ^^ but I rather like the effects. Still experimenting to find out what works best. I apply it to wet/damp hair after a shower, and it dries hard, so I gently scrunch it with my hands and the hardness goes away, leaving me with a soft curl.

Cheers,

arelDarkCurls is right about the scrunching out the crunch. That is from Curly Girl. I have great success from a gel that has glycerin and castor oil in it. I always combine it with leave-in of some sort. Right now I have mixed in a bottle 2 parts of my regular conditioner, 1 part gel, and 1 part coconut oil. I scrunch about 2 to 3 teaspoons of it into my wet hair. The gel is La Bella wet shine gel. LA Looks makes one, too. I use White Rain conditioner.

HAHAHAHAH!! Wanna know what's hilarious? I've been wearing bandana curls and waves ALL December. LHC senses were tingling. I'll take a picture of my bandana wave set tomorrow morn-- er, later on today. I'll then picture my curl set a few days after that. :D

Hmm... I always get frizz, with or without this. I'm not afraid of touching my hair when dry -- I so rarely wear my hair down and natural that I'm always touching it when I do. I'm definitely not the person to ask for advice on frizz! I just live with it. Oil and CO help me keep it minimal, but it's still there.

I love your "Brave" hair, Eirelin! :)

I have stick-straight hair, so any curl at all is exciting to me. I love this thread!

This is from braiding my hair with a scarf. Within about 3 hours of taking this picture most of it had straightened right out again... Sigh. Oh well.

Amapola, imagine how bad you'd feel if dear Wahinee was to ask you, "What 'imposed' face?!" Admitting to her being the love child of Groucho Marx! ;o)

All of these curls are just awe-inspiring. My hair has the slightest of waves and will not take a curl to save my life. From the time I'd take down the whatever I'd used to curl it and got the camera for the pic, it would be straight - and laughing at me! My hair has a nasty sense of humor....

I haven't taken any hair photos recently but this is bandana waves from earlier this year:

http://i105.photobucket.com/albums/m209/aitreni/hair_2012-02_waves.jpg

During the summer I frequently did a really simple variation on rag curls. When the hair was damp, I would divide it in half and make 2 braids to around mid-bust, and put the remaining length (around 1 foot for me) into rag curls and tie them off. Since I was only curling the bottom half I only had to make 2 rag curls and it was very fast, and it was comfortable to sleep in because the rag lumps weren't close to the head. The next day I'd put it in a high ponytail or a half-wrapped bun with the curled ends hanging out. I have 1c/2a hair that needs frequent washing and tends to frizz in humidity, and I found this to be a fairly gentle way to make it look OK during the summer without too much effort.

So many gorgeous curls in here! This is a roller set done on large (but not jumbo) rollers. I usually wear something similar to this as my "everyday" style done with rag curls (which is then hidden in a cinnamon bun 99% of the time, which does a great job of preserving the curl) but the rollers give a more professional, blow dried kind of look.
